I think its really important to show these types of videos, there are aspects of skill in EVERY single thing you show us, and to post videos of a true beginner helps lower viewer's expectations of their own lapidary journey.
I'm still not that fast at making cabs and I've been doing it at least once a week for almost 1 year. being as fast as Justin really does take years, but I'm already implementing some of the techniques I've seen on this channel, it changed my process immediately!
It was so cute to see the dopping process, especially when the wax was twisted...showing mistakes, and especially documenting them to look back on as Saxon progresses, will be really cool/helpful, and it will be a great series, if you make father son videos a regular thing. I know I'd watch them

Excellent work, Saxon. A nice little blue gumdrop you have created! Certainly, it doesn't hurt to have great equipment and the best teacher I know standing at your side.
When I got a good look at that rough close up I knew that, should I be the owner, I would be taking that sand off the back. But that has NOTHING to do with my fetish for double sided stones. NOPE, not a thing!

  • @jmikronis7376

Nice video of both of you while Justin is trying to pass on the knowledge.
Justin, again, you can cancel out the machine noise by including an inversion (microphone level) amplifier, then adding that to your mic level.
It can be adjusted (the machine mic level) to (almost perfectly) cancel it out. I’d get one of your friends to do this. Do it before going into the mixer.
    Cheers.
Update : Digital audio workstations (DAW), have (per channel), an INV button on them. That’s the answer to your problem on grinding wheels. Install a microphone on the grinder, connect it to a channel, do the INV on it. That should bring that noise down. You’ll have to adjust its level.

Well done young fella. Justin because of you I purchased some rough opals at the Ridge from a lovely Lady (who said she thinks of you as a Son) purchased a Gemfish torch (top quality by the way) and after realising hand rubbing will only get me so far I then purchased a 6 wheel CabKing machine. Have managed to rub a few good stones but have been bit afraid of doing the final polish on the 3000 wheel then the 14000 diamond paste and side wheel. Would love to send you a picture or 2 of some of the stones especially one of them which has a very bright floral pattern (I think) from all angles, 18 carats. Not sure at all how I would grade it although I almost certain it's not a black opal.

Hiya Justin, awesome video mate, and when I first started I did cut my fingers like I cut the stones lol. I rubbed the skin off the tips of my fingers, but as you said, that's part of learning. And I'm sure your son will too, but he has the best teacher, I learned how too cut opals from you too, but no one told me that I would wear the skin off my fingers, but I learned how to hold the stone and now I don't, my fingers don't hurt after I cut stones anymore, and I cut more than just opals, but I love cutting opals the most though, our opals aren't as beautiful as the ones yall have, I have a black opal from the states and it doesn't compare to the black opals you have. Well one day you and your son will be cutting black opals together, just like you and your dad. I hope you and your family, have a awesome blessed day. Cheers!
    Cya! 😺🐟 out!

When I first started, I had to use a dop stick... almost always. Small stones can be put on sectioned chopsticks.
Get the right wax or it won't stick.
If wonky, you can lay dop stick on the side of your finger and "miss" the low side as you rotate.
600 is a good grit until you know you aren't going to turn stones into Grey goo (pressure). Make sure to use the sintered wheels to take pointed edges off, or they'll dig lines in your nova wheels.

Well done, Saxon! Think you are well on your way, following in your Dad's footsteps. Can see your Dad is very proud and rightfully so. Keep it up and share with us.

What an awesome video this was.
Not only do we get the benefit of your son’s tutoring, but we also get to see a legacy being actively passed to the next generation 👍.
I think your son cut an excellent gem. I like the high dome gems a little more as they give me the feeling like I’m getting more (if that makes sense), plus the depth of a high domed gem Opal like that really adds to a 3D appearance, sort of like a magnifying glass.
You guys are just super awesome for sharing these experiences with us.
    Thank you for that

What's amazing is, I got just about as much enjoyment watching your son learn as you did. Top father, and amazing son duo
