    Cutting in from the other side you would have ended up with more and more black potch. You saved the stone by going that direction. Great example of how challenging making those initial decisions are as a cutter.

    This might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually preferred this gem with the dark potch in the centre at the point you took it to the finer wheel.
    I loved the aesthetic of the triangular black potch in the dead centre surrounded by the four separate fields of dancing colour that almost perfectly quartered the gem.
    To me the effect was kind of 'magical portal' and was really attractive.

      Inclusions make a precious stone a signature piece. It can be identified from ALL the other stones by that inclusion. The "seeing eye" opal was fabulous! This black potch signature is clearly one of a kind! I believe such stones, depending on the inclusion, will increase in value because of its individual nature. I have considered an amethyst stone that has a darker color in the middle as if it's giving birth to something precious! But the seller wanted too much for it. And now I regret not buying it.

It came with its own charger, (and the charger is pretty small) And I use it a lot. Got it from Riley Gunn. Good alternative, for those on a budget. I also want to eventually get a gem fish i.f. 1 as well. I'd love to support one of my favorite channels in that way.

      I think he knew that the stone was already going to be dark enough to be a black opal without needing all of that black potch as he’s cut enough to know that the best facing side can sometimes be underneath facing the black potch. Question:
    When I saw you first uncover black potch, I was thinking why not make that the back of the stone. Was there a possibility that uncovering what is the back now, could have produced a cleaner face, than the face that you have now?

    Heya, that gem light, is that an LED? Or a small halogen?
    Wondering if you’ve tried a small halogen gem light? LED’s like to only emit mainly 1 peak in the lighting spectrum where as halogen will emit pretty much across the whole spectrum.
    I’m curious to know if you have tried a halogen to know if the whole spectrum gives a better lighting and penetration effect through the gem over an LED? (I like lights 😅)

    • @blackopaldirect
      @blackopaldirect  Год назад

      LED and to find inclusions the spectrum doesn't matter so much but being a neutral 4000k it won't place other colours into the gem. A halogen pushes a very warm light out and gets hot too.

    Does leaving the potch inclusion affect the structural integrity of the finished gemstone? Is it more likely to crack over time?
    I'm making this assumption based on my very limited and outdated understanding of crystalline solids (from mid 90s highschool).

    The finished gem looks a bit like an Egyptian scarab to me. Beautiful work!

    What a lovely piece! This one made me think of a question though.
    Is there a reason why the color purple/violet isn't mentioned as much when talking about the flash in opal and dealing with pricing?

    Good dance man. Question Justin, if you cut it exactly down the middle of the colour bar would/could you end up with two exquisite opal gems ?
