Not just depression. Hatred, sorrow, some anger, defeat, and fear are projected from it. He hates being second banana, he is sorrowful for being weaker than Mario, angry he can't succeed, which leads to defeat, all while he's afraid of being obscure. He is also timid in fights, which is nothing compared to his fear of ghosts. In short, IT'S LUIGI'S SHADOW, HIS TRUE INNER SELF!
Luigi has always had the better jumping and speed skills out of the two brothers whereas Mario is balanced in terms of power and speed. Luigi's speed would also explain why he has terrible traction than Mario, due to the fact that being fast can cause you to have a longer stopping time.
In the end where he describes the taunt where Luigi strikes four different poses, I know where the the third pose comes from. Luigi makes that exact pose in some the promotional artwork of Mario and Luigi SuperStar Saga.
I’m just going to believe that the kick taunt was Luigi using just a fraction of the negative zones power. I also think that’s why he has such a powerful upper cut and random misfire missile attack.
I always preferred Luigi since I was little. Ever since he started having more personality it's been both a good and a bad thing. ANYWAY. I admire your thoroughness with these videos! Very well done!
What happened to this guy? I would've loved the History Behind Super Smash Bros. series back with History Behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Now we have Nintendo Unity for that.
I love Luigi. Always plays as him when he's playable in a Mario game. And for the Super Smash Bros. series... Damn, he's one oof my favourites. So powerful, but crazy ass weird.
I think that Green Missile is specifically based off of the diving attack he and Princess Toadstool used in the Super Mario Bros Super Show. They did use that during a fight. Plus, the episode was made before Smash Bros was a thing.
It sucks that Luigi doesn't have the negative zone as final smash at smash 4 and also in super smash bros ultimate. When it first announced,i was hoping that they will bring back negative zone, but nope. The poltergust 5000 from Luigi's mansion 2
Nice job! I was already quite aware that the fireball's physics were based on Mario Bros- nice to find others thinking the same- MegaChowderfan made a good theory BTW about why Luigi's Negative Zone acts like that. Luigi though has earned a bit more spotlight these days- just wish Nintendo though will not ruin him that way- of course since we love him already even if he's quite shadowed.
Come on Nintendo! Give Luigi a chance to have his own series! Stop Neglecting Luigi! And don't make Fast Paced like New Super Luigi U. Give players the chance to be the True Number 1 and kick Luigi out of Marios Shadow!!😠😁😉
And? Look at Mario, compare him to Luigi, now should there really be that much of popularity difference? They're brothers, yet Mario shows little to no care about Luigi. The only time Mario respects Luigi is when he saves Mario in the two Luigi Ghost Mansion games
I usually already know everything in these videos, but every now-and-then I'm surprised. I wasn't aware of the fireballs in Mario Bros. (he's had straight flying fireballs since 64, how did I never know where they came from!?), nor the losing in Mario Party 2 (the kicks look exactly the same to me). That's one reason these videos are great! I also think you should've mentioned the Minus World. Negative Zone may not have much similarity, but from where else could the name have possibly come?
I love your videos simply because simply, they're about the, IMO, underrated part of Super Smash Bros......the legacies, if you will...now I know there's someone else that has interest in the history behind the games! :)
I think this works really well since most of the simple A moves Luigi has don't really come from any games so they aren't that hard to describe. Still a good vid espiecally using those Mario RPG clips to showcase Luigi's cowardly persona. Oh how I used that in my Smash Brothers fanfics I need to finish. Uh anyway can't wati to see your one for Diddy Kong since he actually does have new specifc moves not just taken from DK.
The biggest mistake of all about Mario brothers is Mario's title as "jumpman",because Luigi jump HIGHER than Mario, and also he is better in the air.I mean Luigi's recovering is much easier than Mario's.So,i believe Luigi should have the title of "jumpman" Also,if you hear anouncer's voice if you select Luigi, then you will see that even him believe Luigi is a bad fighter, and he doesn't have big chance to win.
Also: In Mario Sports Mix, Luigi acts the way he does in Smash Bros- even launching himself with smoke coming from behind him (His side-B move in Smash Melee and Brawl). Pretty funny how his traits and moves were carried over to Sports Mix.
Funny thing is, the reason why Luigi talks about feeling something behind at the ghost story in his Secret Diary is that when you get the Ground Pound enabling shoes (I think you get them in the ghost place.), you can go back to Mario's Pad to find Music notes coming from that spot where you can read Luigi's Diary. Then if you go through it you'll catch Luigi writing the Boo Story in his Secret Diary, which makes Mario that "thing" that was behind him, And he'll take five steps back into you.
I just noticed that the fourth pose in Luigi's taunt is one of his poses from the Mario & Luigi series. Sometimes when he's sad/disappointed, he faces away from the scene, squats and kinda starts poking the ground. I don't know where the second and third poses are from though, except for the second possibly referencing his "bang bang" victory pose.
I never made the connection between the "Mario Bros." timed fireballs and the "Smash Bros." fireball attacks. Good find. As for the Green Missile: It could be derived from the "Super Mario Bros. 2" super jump. That is, the character gathers himself, glows, and can then propel himself much father (a technique that now, instead, launches Luigi sideways).
Negative Zone actually comes from Super Mario World - green bubbles that could occasionally be found in the ghost houses, which makes sense considering Luigi's Mansion.
12:46 I saw a video that shows this trick where Luigi's kick taunt actually causes damage to his opponents! (another video shows that his taunt does the same thing in Super Smash Bros. Melee!)
@JmTsHaW i know right? i remember when Dedede was first announced for Brawl and since then the majority of the game's screenshots when they were revealing future characters consisted of these futre characters beating up on Dedede
@CrappyCaptureDevice If I may offer a suggestion, don't you think that Luigi's up- B move is from the way that the brothers break normal blocks when they eat a mushroom? And that one of his idle animations comes from how you can pull on Mario's nose in Super Mario 64?
The multiple taunt - taunt is also an homage to Superstar saga where you are getting your picture taken. you can rapidly change to diferent emotions and stances without a transition animation.
It should be noted, that Luigi's Side-B translated to other games, for example Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Luigi's special skill is the Luigi Rocket, which makes him propel himself in the air almost exactly as he does in Brawl.
I also remember in Super Mario Galaxy where Luigi goes to collect 1ups and a toad tells him that they were addressed to Mario but that he shouldn't feel bad
Luigi is my favorite mario character. Although he is cared shitless all the time, he still has courage to carry on. Just like in Luigi's Mansion. Can't wait for Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon comming this month.
Look on the bright side, Luigi was added in the DS remake, and he finally got his chance to go with Mario in a 3D-style adventure game in Super Mario Galaxies 1 and 2.
I just noticed that one of the poses that he does in the other taunt shown was a pose from one of his M&L RPG artworks. Or at least it was very similar.
Πανος Πεδης I think so considering his smash and take up 80 percent of the stage. Also, I mean jeez they use his depression as a weapon in brawl. I love his new one sense it’s from luigi’s mansion.
@PokemonRulez2468 actually, luigi probably just learned it a wierd way, because if it hits someone standing right in front of him, it catches them on fire and sends them way further than mario ever could. this could be a reference to luigi being a better jumper, so if he hits just right, he hits HARD. although ur explanation would suffice for when he doesn't get it perfectly...
Great Video, but You missed the part of Luigi's personality in the Cartoons. Probaly the Cartoons defined the personality of the Bros. Mario as a Reckless and Adventurous man and Luigi as a Carefull man. Super Mario Bros. Super Show: In this cartoon Luigi is presented to us as an Shy person and also he is afraid of most of enemies. Man it just gives u a weird and like I don't even no how to explain but it gives me a weird feeling knowingnthat luigis final smash is because of being in marios shadow for so long and how it's how he expresses his feelings for that O.O
It should also be noted that, although Paper Mario was the first game to characterize Luigi as a scardey cat, the first time he was made into a timid, frightened guy EVER was the Super Mario Bros Super Show
i dont know where i heard this, but when theres a block with multiple coins, i think theres one game where mario has to jump multiple times to get the coins and luigi gets them all in one shot. maybe it was the advance games. idk
Few things I noticed: 1. Luigi has the same frightened pose when he comes out of the pipe. 2. That Luigi used to have the same moveset as mario in SSB but has changed thorough the games. 3. Question: Did Paper Mario came after SSB because his dash attack (sissy punches) is unique in the smash series, shows his coward like moves.
11:42 I personally hate the Star Gate from Partners in Time because he was disrespecting my man, Luigi. I never want to see the Star Gate again. LOL (just kidding). Luigi and Mario should have killed him. Also, he was wrong about Mario too, because he lost a lot of weight over the years as well. How about the Star Gate can shut the hell up about Mario and Luigi.
Hey I personally think Luigi's super jump can also be based on his super jump in SPM, but he had it in melee already. But SPM was originally going to be a GameCube title
Whats up with the crab sprite at 03:56 ish. Its sideways is that the famicom version or something? In all the versions I've played the crabs always face towards the screen. Luigi's first solo adventure. Are you forgetting about Mario is Missing or refusing to count it as an actual game?
Also worth noting in Super Paper Mario. Luigi has superior jump powers including....a super uppercut move. He packs all his strength into his jump and rockets skywards devastating foes above him. While the uppercut jump in SSBB isn't a very accurate recreation of it it's still something.
One thing missed notice the lightning effect after is forward smash super star saga anyone Mario got fire while Luigi got lightning. I don't remember the lightning effect being added till bawl but it has been a while
in Mario and Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story, some Sock-ops (sock creatures) kidnap mario. If Luigi enters battle without him, he makes the same sound as when he goes out of the pipe in SSBB
actually I kinda understand why some of Luigi's moves are the same to Mario's since in the first several games (ending with mario world i think) Luigi's sprite was a recolor of Mario's so of course they were the same moves.
I wanted Mr. L to make an appearance!!! Maybe he'll be an individual character in the next SSB. That would be awesome. Like how there is Link and Toon Link. One could only dream!
He is literally weaponizimg his own depression
Not just depression. Hatred, sorrow, some anger, defeat, and fear are projected from it.

Bravery is not the absence of fear but the ability to move forward in spite of that fear.
Which makes you think about Luigi mansion and dark moon.
I totally agree with you.
Well said
Agreed
i feel really bad for luigi. he gets left out of a lot of mario's adventures and gets judged badly. its like having permanent bullies kinda
Hey, at least he's loved by everyone and even had his own year...
They should of made a game where he shot mario for revenge of leaving him out of a lot of Mario’s journey’s
and then make out with Peach

Luigi has always had the better jumping and speed skills out of the two brothers whereas Mario is balanced in terms of power and speed. Luigi's speed would also explain why he has terrible traction than Mario, due to the fact that being fast can cause you to have a longer stopping time.
mario runs faster than luigi but luigi jumps higher.
Not until Super Mario Bros. 2
Luigi can just get better shoes.
I've always liked Luigi this way. Also, you forgot to include how his third taunt was one of his victory poses in Melee.

Wow they made Luigi depressing in Brawl.

“This is ironic because luigi isn’t in super Mario 64” ohhh my friend how we thought that fact wasn’t true

Mario was named Jumpman before Mario Bros ya dingus
The ironic thing is they both have the same actor. Charles Martinet.

Awesome finding with the fireballs! I never thought about that!

Mario and Luigi's design in Brawl, comes from Super Mario Galaxy. Think about, I mean their clothes are very dark and they look a little pale.
The Luigi Show
Yeah, probably. Except Luigi’s overalls aren’t slightly rolled up 😂

I just noticed that the fourth pose in Luigi's taunt is one of his poses from the Mario & Luigi series. I noticed that during his Final Smash, Luigi's vocal sounds are of sadness and despair, probably because of the being in Mario's shadow thing,
you should add that luigi's side taunt (where he falls down on his belly) is the same pose that he flies in in super mario world
