Marth's Moves - History Behind Super Smash Bros. Brawl

  • READING THROUGH THIS WOULDN'T HURT!
Shows where I believe Marth's moves come from or what they are influenced by.
Special thanks to SobmicSSBB. His Marth's moves video gave me a head start in info on this video.
    ---
Like Pikachu's Volt Tackle, Marth obtaining the Falchion (the legendary sword he uses in Brawl), involves a fairly lengthy process.
    ---
Even though Marth has the Falchion in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it behaves more like a rapier and even sparkles like the Miracle Sword. Marth's Smash-A is the only move that is the same when Marth is equipped with the Falchion in the original game.
    ---
Since Marth's "arrival" animation is from Path of Radiance (despite having no connection with that universe), I decided to show the evolution of the warping animations from Fire Emblem Gaiden up until Path of Radiance to show how they have changed.
    ---
Unlike when I made Marth's Moves for Melee, I know enough Japanese to play through the game and understand SOME of the dialogue. (Though I admit I did seek some outside help when translating Gharnef's dialogue.)
While I have translated some of the Japanese text in the original Fire Emblem, I only translated what I believe is relevant within the context of the video instead of every little piece of text that shows up on screen. With that being said, I also refer to games using their Japanese titles in Roman characters instead of translating the names. The reason for this is because none of the Fire Emblem games shown in this video have been officially localized and sometimes the translations of their names vary. Since not too many people can read Japanese characters, I wrote them with Roman characters. However, here are some of the translated names nonetheless:
Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi - Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light
Monshou no Nazo - Mystery of the Crest
Seisen no Keifu - Genealogy of the Holy War
    ---
The Fire Emblem games in this video that are in English are fan-translated ROMs or patches.
    ---
I did NOT use Shadow Dragon on the DS because it was released after Super Smash Bros. Brawl in addition to the fact that Masahiro Sakurai is (or was) unfamiliar with it.
    ---
Please note that I do not reference Monshou no Nazo that much because I show how characters behave (or their design, etc.) in their original games, unless something originates in a later game. Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi is Marth's original game.
    ---
Marth's "Everyone, please look at me" taunt is also out of place for his character, and quite frankly, is kind of bizarre why he was even given that taunt. While there are a few theories about this taunt, none are that strong, though I still present what I know.
Also, I didn't mean for both of my examples of Marth's personality to involve the mistreatment (execution or slavery o_O ) of children. It just turned out that way and I didn't notice until the video was complete.
    ---
In the original Fire Emblem, the colors and shapes on the maps made the text kind of difficult to read in some places, so I tried to place the text where it would be easier to read. I tried my best to make it better, but if it's still hard to read, I apologize.
    ---
If you want, here is a .rar of the savestates I created when I played through the original Fire Emblem in FCEUX. It has plenty of arena abuse (since I could use savestates) so the characters should be pretty leveled in the later chapters not to mention I have tons of money. You could even load the last savestate and attack the dragon with Marth if you want to just beat the game. However, I didn't bother really playing chapter 24 properly. Since I was so close to the end of the game, I just warped Marth to the castle, had him defeat the boss and then seized the castle. I also bought some stat-boosting items with Chainey from the secret shop in the corner so I could use them on Marth in the next chapter, but forgot to use them, lol. Guess I didn't need them.
The format of the files are (chapter number) - (savestate number)
    rapidshare.com/...
    or
    www.megaupload....
If anyone has any trouble accessing the .rar, leave a comment here or send me a message. Both Rapidshare and Megaupload are not working properly at the moment.

One minor detail: when Marth uses his Final Smash, you hear a faint sound, this is the sound of a critical hit from Fire Emblems 6, 7 and 8. Funny considering number 6 was the one with Roy in it xD.

at the end of the day, it almost leaves you to wonder how much of this freakishly extensive homework Sakurai did with not just one character, but ALL of them

You could also say that Marth's "tipper" mechanic is a reference to how he consistently attacks using only the tip of his blade, often keeping his distance from his opponents.

In 22:18, Marth doesn't say "みんな、見てくれ!(Minna, mite kure!)"; instead, He says "みんな、見ていてくれ!(Minna, mite ite kure!)", meaning "Everyone, please watch over me!". "mite" and "mite ite" both mean similar but different in a nuance.
I can think of two different things he wants to say. First, he wants to show his bravery to his army, and be a good model for them. Marth's men are actually watching him fight in this theory.
Or, more possibly, he imagines his fellows in his heart and makes it his emotional support. They don't have to be there to say the words, you can even say "mite ite kure" to a man already dead!
I am positive because I am Japanese :D

The green dancing sword (when you tilt down when using dancing sword) is kinda like Astra because 1.its green 2. It attacks 5 times. So in the sense, it would be like brave sword and then Astra activated on the last hit.

One small correction. Though the green jewel on the end of the Falchion may not have been in the sword's design in the original game Fire Emblem Ankoku Ryu to Hikari no Tsurugi, it however was in the third installment, Fire Emblem Monsho no Nazo. This might still have been in reference to the point he made, however it wasn't newly added in Smash Bros.

    • @hypotheticaltapeworm
      @hypotheticaltapeworm 3 года назад +1

It also is in the Falchion's original design. There's art from the first game where Marth has his left hand on his hip and has Falchion lifted in his right, you can see the green pommel gem. Also it's on the title screen of Fire Emblem 1, it's just colored white for some reason, maybe palette limitations?

    • @SollyTrue
      @SollyTrue 7 лет назад +2

No, it requires you to get hit, and deals only half the damage to your attacker. Marth's Down B and how it's more powerful depending on how powerful the enemy's attack is must be a basic, subtle reasoning that "The more powerful the attack that your dodging and counterattacking against, the higher your own stats are in comparison!" If that makes any sense.

I saw "King Marth"'s abilities in Fire Emblem Awakening and I can't help but to think they are related with Marth's Smash moves. A little background: in FE:A you can get characters from past games via DLC or Spotpass, I'm talking specifically about "King Marth" from Fire Emblem 12: New Mistery of the Emblem. He has Astra (mentioned in the video, hits up to 5 times, similar to the dancing blade), Sol (allows you to "recover" half the damage done)...

As someone who got associated with Fire Emblem through Super Smash Bros., I will agree with you on one thing: Marth really has no connection with the continent of Tellius. But in FE Awakening, the game that takes place 1,000 years after Mystery of the Emblem, for some reason Ike’s sword, Ragnell, was seen with Priam, a random guy whom Intelligent Systems made the descendant of the Radiant Hero. In all honesty, I did not know if they were referring to Ike, and I still don’t. But…Owain’s dialogue in Fire Emblem Warriors’ History Mode map, Scion of Legend, may have something to say about that.

    Couple of things you missed:
Note how Marth moves on the map. Hunched over, with his cape sort of billowing behind him. Same as his Brawl running animation.
As you mentioned, many FE characters attack by jumping into the air. This could explain why Marth is very powerful in the air.

  • @BlueSpinosaurus

Even though it's slow paced, Fire Emblem games tend to be very tense because one screw up can really screw you over and you might have to restart (if you care about your units dying and never coming back) since the games are VERY strategic. So unless you're playing Awakening where EVERYONE is overpowered and there's no danger or strategy, the tensity of these games really refrain them from being boring, and instead end up being exciting.

hey CCD... you were stating that Marth spun his sword and had the flashes that appeared on Falchion... when you look at the animation for the critical for the Falchion in Shadow Dragon and the sword of Light and SSBB, a small detail i noticed is that they were one in the same... didn't know if you caught that or not, but i figured that i'd point it out

Just read through the description. I think the taunt is supposed to be "Everyone. Follow me." seeing as how he would've led an army into battle.

Wait, falcion actually prevented counterattacks? That would have been pretty useful in another game (cough, cough FEH)

The only thing I miss is his costumes.. 'cause I don't know about his last one (the one with the lighter blue hair) if it's his melee outfit or that he looks like Ephraim of Fire Emblem Sacred Stones for the GBA..

Wow this one is a lot longer and in depth than the Melee one. Good job.

this is really clever but you forgot to mention that the way marth runs when he has falchion equiped is similar to the way he runs in ssbb

@BlueSpinosaurus Let's not start a flame war. In lunatic and higher, grinding isn't possible. Risen spawns are too expensive, and they are maxed out, and there is an anti-boss abuse function. If you restart in hard or higher, the enemies have a chance of starting in a new place, to trap you in a pincer movement.

@CrappyCaptureDevice Did you also know the critical hit sound when you land a hit on an enemy with final smash makes the sound of the one from Fire Emblem 7.

@CrappyCaptureDevice Might as well keep it for "historical value." along with the rest of your Melee videos.
Man, this video was incredible. I've never played a single Fire Emblem game, so I didn't know any of this.

Another video to add to the playlist, awesome work. Maybe you should ask some people to help you out with some of these so that making these videos wouldn't be such a lengthy process.

I'm not saying they didn't at all. Obviously, some where taken (an undeniable example is the dodging/counter animation). But, for example, I'm not sure about the rapier segment...

Watching this video shows me just how much work it toke for you to make those videos, which I realized long ago, but it won't hurt to make your videos feel faster paced. More so if you had a mic, as it's not so much because of laziness to not text, but it's harder to sit though this and show off to my friends.

Could Marth's neutral A combo loop be influenced by his standard attack with normal swords (slash downwards) and special swords (slash upwards). The stance is different but the sword motion looks somewhat similar.

12:25 I don't think this interpretation is correct. First off, in Melee Marth was contrasted with Roy (otherwise they were mostly clones) by the fact that Roy did more damage with the inside arc of his sword, while Marth did more damage with the tip of his sword. When an attack does more knockback, it could mean Marth just got a "tipper". Also in Brawl as in Melee, moves stale (lose effectiveness if they're spammed), which explains partly or fully the 4% less damage after using the same move.
