As an Oklahoma fan I even said at the time I don’t want a touchdown taken away for taunting. Give it a 15 yard penalty and move on.
As an Oklahoma fan, I simply asked for fair and balanced penalization when it comes to that rule. Call it every time or eliminate the rule completely. Jaren Kanak flexed his muscles after a 4th down stop and they took away OU's goal line stand. Nothing was taken away on this play later in the game which had TWO instances of unsportsmanlike conduct as it is defined. The result was first and goal from the half yard line for UCF... known for having the best rushing offense in the conference. The other result was a slap on the wrist penalty assessed on the kickoff team.
Seven points for UCF both times. We all know how much the rest of that league would go apeshit if the tables were turned and the Sooners were gifted a 14-point swing.
I'm almost certain he was blowing a kiss to the cheerleaders, which moves this from disrespectful to the slickest move in the history of college football.

either way it was an illegal action that the refs did not call even when venables pointed out to the ref. the best thing to do whould have been the refs review the play and to see the foul. instead they decided that the 2 fouls after play make up for missed call!!!

Props to the refs for waiting until after the play to throw the flag. They could've easily thrown a flag for the kiss and ruined the play. God forbid kids throw in some mild trash talk while playing a game.
They didn’t call the penalty on the kiss, it was cause the WR made a gun w his hands, u can see the ref throw the flag right after that

I’m shocked the refs didn’t call this back. Thank god for some reasonable refs who waited to throw the flag. Plays shouldn’t be called back for stuff like this
So many people here saying the same thing. That the official waited to throw the flag like that would've affected anything. The flag was thrown for excessive celebration for the celebration after the play. They don't just wait to throw a flag and decide where to put the ball. How do so many people misunderstand the basic rules?

Refs have been calling back plays for celebration before the score. This play clearly falls in that bucket and it’s a stupid thing to call back. Luckily, it didn’t happen. That’s what everyone’s saying
It is not really at the discretion of the officiating crew because those are the rules much like too many players in the backfield. Either there are too many or the play is good and there is no infraction. Guarantee if it happens again before their eyes they are going to call it. It's not really a pick and choose affair and a lack of consistency just hurts the game in the end, whether it is this game or any other game.
It's a dumb rule, but it's still a rule. It should have been called. The ref wasn't reasonable, he just missed a call.
I think they need to change this penalty from Unsportsmanlike to what they really mean: Hurting the Other Team's Precious Feelings. Rather than being called by the refs, it must be signaled by the victimized team's coach throwing out a white flag. The penalty is enforced by the referee giving the Feelings-Hurter a stern finger-wagging. A second offense results in the offender sitting in the corner for 5 minutes to think about what they've done and writing a heartfelt apology note to the other team.

I'd say the Sooners had the last laugh, however.
rules state taunting is a penalty. If the player taunts during a play then the play comes back or where it occured. It's sad people are saying the refs should alter the penalty because they don't feel it's that big of a deal. The refs job isn't to rewrite the rules mid game due to your feelings.
Very similar to the play from the Kick Six game where Marshall hit the sideline route for the touchdown on Auburn's last drive. Classic Gus, bait the defense in with dives, QB pulls on the RPO and a man leaks out.
Could have been called for taunting but it would have been BS ref ball for something that had ZERO impact on the play. Also you can see the TD celebration and... that might have been 1 and 2 miming firing guns into the stands. Refs penalized them for that celebration which is 10000% justified.

It seems that celebration is very inconsistently enforced across the NCAA. I seen a simple fist bump get called and wipe away a touchdown, but also seen massive 10 person celebrations not get called. I attended one Louisville game where there were 4+ hours of lightning delays. A 7 pm game was finishing past 2 AM. Late in that game, it was pouring down rain and only a few hundred fans were left. Louisville scored a touchdown with a few minutes left and a player just walked back to give a kid a simple high five, nothing elaborate. They called an unsportsmanlike conduct, celebration penalty on him. I saw a game earlier this year where a player scored a touchdown and did a "Lambeau Leap" into the stands. No penalty. Way too inconsistent. I would let them celebrate a bit. Penalties should be called if the players taunt the opposing team or fans, hurt the opposing team or fans (i.e. chuck the ball into the stands or spike the ball into another player), cause equipment damage to cameras or tear down goalposts, or if it drags on excessively (beyond 10-15 seconds). Maybe just set guidelines like that. Players should be able to celebrate touchdowns and big plays a little.
