It's not very good. I have the same heater I use almost everyday in dairy barns. I've used it inside a small garage and it only takes about 45 mins to tell the air is getting very thin.
Get a small harbor freight rolling dolly to put it on i screwed mine down with some scrap 2x4s. I also used an old shoplight" incandescent retractable style" and cut the plug and light off to power it. Now it rolls anywhere easy and the cord managment is super convenient.
Good heater. However...If your outside air temp around the unit is below 41F you have to use a small heater to feed the intake for the thermostat or you cannot shut it off correctly. My shop is open on one end and I use this to heat an area. The air temp around the heater still may be below 41. Just FYI. I called tech support at MR Heater and they told me that was on page 4 of the manual. Good video.
Good point! I have had situations where I had to let it run to get the room temp above 41 to shut it off properly. (after having the garage door open) I'm curious in the grand scheme how hard an "improper shutdown" actually is on the unit.
We all love to save money initially but if you can afford a nice insulated shop just buck up and get a ceiling mounted natural gas or propane heater installed at the time of the build.
Fair point. In my case I wanted to avoid using propane. I don't want to deplete my household supply. If this was a daily use shop it may be a different story. I use it on weekends when it's cold Dec - Feb and not much more.
@@IndyFarmLife You can get old floor model oil heaters for next to nothing also... just a thought I'm not a fan of propane or natural gas either. I just bought one of these for outside use.
I recently purchased a new torpedo heater. Is it normal for it to smell so much in the beginning? If so, how long does it last before it stops smelling?
Nice Video thank you. I have a question does it turn off when it reaches the temperature you put in? and does it start back up to keep the garage to that level?
That's a decent price, I'm still using my 35 000 btu kerosene(ready heater)from 1976, heats my 2 car garage to 60 degrees on a 25 degree day, would be nice to have a new heater to spend longer times working in the garage, will have to consider this heater. Whats the fuel consumption rate? My ready heater is 2 gallons for 8 hours, will you use less fuel if the thermostat is set lower?Quiter would be better
Dyna Glow makes quick, clean heat. My outdoor warm air furnace takes over in about 10 minutes. Have loved wood heat and it’s economy my entire 69 years.
I bought one of the competitors models with no thermostat about five years ago. The thermostat is a great feature. Two things I did with mine is I split the fuel 50/50 diesel to kerosine. That helped a bunch with the start up smoking. Also I run a 18" pedestal above and behind the heater to better distribute the heat. If my old one dies I know which one the replace it with. Great video!
I saw where someone commented there is a fuel fragrance additive that makes it smell like cherry or grape. I just bought one of these heaters and am on my way to pick it up.
Love your sense of humor. Does the fan blow heat out the front like the tubular heaters or does the heat go straight up? If you lost power and couldn’t follow your shut down procedure what would happen?
Haha thanks. Yes, the fan does blow heat out the front. It also radiates out pretty well. You can easily feel the heat 12ft in front of the heater. If you lost power it would just shut down without cooling. Not the best, but not the end of the world. I would say it's like jamming on your brakes vs a light press. Both work, but one will give them a longer useful life.
I’ve read thru most of the comments and haven’t seen any questions about noxious fumes. I did see you had c02 detector you referenced. Any concerns about harmful fumes with this unit?
I'm no scientist and haven't conducted any such tests, but I do allow some fresh air in and the alarm has never gone off. If it helps, I have never had a headache from being around it....
I have the older version of this heater. Wish mine had the thermostat feature. I run mine on a combination of diesel and kerosene. Even just a half gallon of kerosene in the fuel tank and it keeps the smoke down.
Any condensation issues? My propane 100k heats my 30x40 building very very fast, but anything metal gets condensation. Ive only used it twice and need an alternative. im also concerned about explosion. I got the garage to temp to paint once. i got the temp up and unplugged my heater long enough to paint and waited before turning it back on. it seems like there has to be a better option. i'm about to put a forced air in it or heat pump.
Brilliant friendly informative, I was interested in these units and found yourself, I'm from Scotland, many people that aren't in towns and cities on mains gas have kerosene powered central heating here. Many of these rural properties are now converting to heat pumps. Therefore lots of left over kerosene in our storage tanks! And what a great way to use it up! Thank you, I don't know what your other videos cover but you have yourself a new subscriber all the same
I've got a few salamander heaters and a few propane heaters ive been experimenting with fuel pumps on the diesel heater to get rid of the god awful rotary vane pump no luck yet but I think I might have to pick one of these up
Love this heater design. Although I wish it didn’t need power. Would be a great heater for emergency use otherwise. Great that it runs off diesel, especially since I have my own diesel tank for all my equipment.
I have a 2.5 car garage. Something like 6 to 700 sqaure feet. Its 10 degrees out atm and my 80k torpedo heater running on diesel will allow me to be in a t shirt if desired when working in garage today. Do you think this heater would do the same? Seems to make the same noise my torpedo does, though. The jead High is what's making me consider this heater
Yes, it will definitely keep it warm enough. I can keep my 1500 sqft garage 65 degrees, no problem. You will be shocked at how quiet this is. Night and day vs a normal 'torpedo' heater.
@@IndyFarmLife i have a combination boiler in my basement that runs domestic hot water and floor heat. Two separate heat exchangers but one burner. I have a zone in the basement and garage. Not sure how efficient it is yet. Still have to make the final connections. Ive been using a torpedo heater for now.
Great review…just bought one. I’ve got question….been running kerosine in it so far, noticed a little fumes from it. Does this need to be adjusted for Elevation at all for a cleaner burn? 9k foot elevation is where it’s used. Or should I try diesel per other commenters said. Thanks and Lee up the reviews.
I've read people say there is a pump pressure adjustment inside you may need to adjust for running on diesel... since they test it on kerosene at the factory.
I like that heater, might save up for one for my 2-car garage. I have a wood stove in my 24x24 workshop. I also have 2 of those Tera pumps and love them.
Do you crack open a door while you have this running? I rent a 600sq.ft garage with 8.5ft ceilings that is really well insulated but the landlord won't install a 220v outlet or natural gas, I need something to keep the cold Alberta winters out while I am wrenching.
I do often have a door open. As others have pointed out, my garage doors are 100% sealed, which helps fresh air come in. I often open/close my doors a lot while working. Not the most efficient for keeping heat in, but hey, it's me.
Is it still working well? Almost bought one of this design last winter but I read many reviews from many of the different branded ones (they are all made in the same factory in China) and there are many reviews that they fail. Lots of negative reviews. I passed.
Hi, I just purchased this heater and I appreciate the video. I didn’t see you talk about how, or even if you ventilate your space to avoid co2 buildup. Of course the instructions tell you to ventilate, do you do that at all or just rely on the open space around your garage door? Second question, I see you have a co detector, have you ever had an issue?? Thanks for the video, very informative.
LOL I felt like I was there in the garage with the sound effects! That's awesome that it's so stinking quiet. I never use one just because of the fumes but this one seems pretty legit.
@@IndyFarmLife Absolutely! I've been in plenty of garages working on cars running a salamander and its so freaking loud you can't have a conversation with the dude right next to you.
The buzzing from 4:44 to 5:00, what is occurring during this process that makes it significantly louder than when the heater is in normal operation? It kinda reminds me of an ancient oil-burning floor furnace I had. A similar 60hz-like buzz for a minute, then the fan comes on. Nonetheless it was super cool to see this Mr. Heater come to life like a jet engine. Almost makes me want one for that alone lmao.
Yea, they could be tightened up a little more, but there doesn't seem to be much heat loss. I had it on yesterday and had to shut it off because it got way too hot out there. I honestly like to know that I do have some fresh air coming into the space too.
I have had this heater for a couple of years now. It has worked well until now. It is flaming out about 15 seconds after ignition is complete. Then shows code "E1" on the digital screen. I have cleaned out the fuel filter, fuel pick up screen in the fuel tank, and made some adjustments to the fuel pump solenoid. Noting fixes the flame out issue. I've searched online for videos or solutions to this but cannot find anything. Looking to see if anyone else has had this issue and what they did to fix it? Thanks.
Update: I fixed it. After scouring the comments sections of all the videos related to this heater I compiled some info that I could put to use. The heater comes from the factory set up to run kerosene. The viscosity of kerosene and diesel are different. Therefore, if you run diesel through the fuel pump, the nozzle can become clogged fairly easy as it is burned from the nozzle spray. This will make the nozzle clog and build up cauterized fuel particles on the nozzle and surrounding area. This will also leave a little bit of unburned diesel fuel in the fumes and consume a higher volume of diesel. I removed the four screws surrounding the case in the rear portion to access the nozzle and removed the excess buildup then put the rear cover back on and turned my attention to the fuel pump. On the fuel pump, there are two adjustments that can be made to allow the fuel pump to run at the correct pressure and flow for diesel fuel. I turned the rear screw (Phillips head) all the way clockwise to close the fuel flow then anticlockwise a quarter of a turn. I then turned the side screw, (flat head) clockwise to fully close the valve, then anticlockwise 1/2 turn. Restarted the machine. Startup was perfect without any unburned fuel at all and it ran perfectly. No flame out, no E1 code and no unburned fuel smell. I’m also happy to have a fully functioning machine unlike those who have hacked up their machine from the videos on YT that convert to run off of toggle switches and disable many of the safeguards and thermostat functions. Intellect, mechanical sense, troubleshooting, and patience for the win! I hope this information can help someone else out.👍
When I am next at my computer I am going to pin this comment. Thanks for the feedback and troubleshooting for us all. I haven't ever had the issues you did. I'm in my barn now burning diesel and working away. Thanks!
Do you run K-1 or are you burning Diesel #2 right from the gas pump. I have the Master Brand version and want to burn Diesel for ease of buying it over K-1 but haven't dared. I don't want to clog anything up? Thank you!!
@@jeffreyheverly9011 No Sir. I had read about/watched a video where someone said they needed to do that, so I was ready for it. But I just put diesel in it and went for it. I have run through multiple tanks so far with no issue. It has always lit on the first try too. I figure if I had some bit of an issue that would be the first place it shows and take a time or two to lite up. It's solid.
Did you have to make an adjustment to the pressure regulator to burn diesel? I just bought one of these and am planning on running pump diesel in it. Read somewhere that was necessary. Anyone know?
Hi Steven, no I didn't have to make any adjustments. I had read that as well and was curious but it fired up every time on pump diesel without any issues. I think you are in the clear!
As I sit here with "whoooosh" of my 125,000 BTU propane joint screaming behind me, I had to come here to say thank you! You just opened my eyes to a better solution while waiting for my stove pipe to come in. 40x30 pole barn uninsulated open truss. I am putting 3/4" plywood sheets up for storage and to retain heat. Any suggestions? I am eventually going to insulate it using foam, just not right now. I got my wood stove and now i just need venting. Holy Cow sorry for the long comment.
Glad I could help! I have a barrel stove in my barn. I love it! They do make a larger version of this heater that would match the 125k BTU you already have, but it's quite a bit more expensive. Good luck with the stove build. Hard to beat having a real fire.
In my racing garage I sit the space heater out side level under the window. I got 4 ft of regular fireplace flu pipe material .I took the bottom window out and made a double pain replacement for the flu to come threw. I took the thermostat and ran it inside also. When the spaceheater comes on you don't even hear it. I made a cover for the spaceheater out side with 2 peaces of plywood to keep the rain and snow off of it. Use diesel fuel in it to so you don't stink like kerosene. Best set up I have ever used. Just like a heat pump actually !
@paul watson to make sure I'm understanding this correctly, you're using a torpedo style heater, placing it outside, and piping the heat in through stove pipe that's directly covering the end of the torpedo heater? Did you plumb it through the wall, using double wall pipe? If you double wall pipe it, all the way, you'd have less heat loss at the exterior piping, though that's probably not much of a realistic consideration. I've done something very similar, on a much smaller scale, while ice fishing. Using a portable diesel heater, outside the pop up, plumbed into the hut with a short piece of 3" double wall. It eliminates the noise AND the need to vent fresh air to the heater, AND solves the CO2 issues!
I have a Mr Heater torpedo and it is so dang loud we put it outside, crack the door, and aim it to blow hot air in under the raised door. Obviosuly an uphill battle heating a shop with the door cracked..
@Ericec4126 Did you not get a couple cold blasts last year? I remember it being below zero here for a while. It's like washing your car and then it raining. If you buy a heater, it won't get cold! Ha
@IndyFarmLife It wasn't bad at all, I bought a snowblower last year, and there wasn't even enough snow to drag it out. I'm for sure getting that heater
I like those heaters but wonder about long term reliability and ease of repair when the time comes. I have 2 torpedo heaters 1 I bought in 1994 and it has ran flawlessly with no issues whatsoever. The other I picked up in a scrapyard and repaired it for less than $50. I’ve added plug in thermostat’s to both and run off road diesel as well, and yes they are loud. I’ve found they run much cleaner on diesel versus kerosene. Maybe if I ever wear them out or can’t get parts I may buy a quieter heater. Thank you for your informative video.

Get a small harbor freight rolling dolly to put it on i screwed mine down with some scrap 2x4s. I also used an old shoplight" incandescent retractable style" and cut the plug and light off to power it. Now it rolls anywhere easy and the cord managment is super convenient.
I may have to do that! HF for the win!
Excellent video I got one of these yesturday they are very quiet
Excellent video😂
Thanks 👍
No vent for outside?
Thanks! Yes it does. Works just like a normal thermostat
I was looking at the Dyno Glow heater, but you sold me, thank you for the video..
You're welcome JC. Enjoy it!
Your 50/50 idea is awesome. I may have to give it a try this winter. Glad you liked the video. I love this little heater.
I saw where someone commented there is a fuel fragrance additive that makes it smell like cherry or grape. I just bought one of these heaters and am on my way to pick it up.
Let me know how you like it/where you bought it!
How's the smell? When I use my torpedo heater it's fine until it shuts off and it reeks of kero. Get a headache from the fumes.
@@IndyFarmLife Thanks. Stay warm friend. Plus new sub here.
@SkookumRanch-y3w with this heater around, I'll be sweaty! Ha. Thanks! Glad you are along for the ride. Hoping to post sometime this weekend
Thanks - btw that's a lot of open air at the garage door - also uninsulated
Yea,it could be sealed better, but I'll take the fresh air while burning this. It is insulated though. R14
I got one very similar to that but it does not have a thermostat control but I will say this They are nice
Thanks! The thermostat is a nice feature. Easy to add though too
Brilliant friendly informative, I was interested in these units and found yourself, I'm from Scotland, many people that aren't in towns and cities on mains gas have kerosene powered central heating here. Many of these rural properties are now converting to heat pumps. Therefore lots of left over kerosene in our storage tanks! And what a great way to use it up! Thank you, I don't know what your other videos cover but you have yourself a new subscriber all the same
Thanks for the cool info and thanks for subscribing! Stay warm!
I've got a few salamander heaters and a few propane heaters ive been experimenting with fuel pumps on the diesel heater to get rid of the god awful rotary vane pump no luck yet but I think I might have to pick one of these up
Awesome video! Does the blower electric blower run upba huge electric bill?
Nice, and if it does what you say, it is well worth it, I stopped using my Torpedo heater because it is so loud and the fumes were unbearable anymore
Almost 3 years in, and I still love it. I've been using it quite a bit lately. Still happy with it.
Will it run off agricultural/off-road diesel or better to run regular diesel through it?
I haven't tried it, but it should. I need to do that to save a few pennies.
Great video Adam. I still havent hooked up my floor heat so this is a great option.
Thanks Kyle! This little heater is pretty awesome. I had it rockin' all afternoon yesterday for Christmas.
PS, curious what your plan is for in floor heat? Heat pump or wood boiler? I would think a pure resistive setup would be too costly to run.
Ohh nice. I wish we had put in in floor heat. Will be curious to hear your take on it once it's all buttoned up.
@@IndyFarmLife ill keep you updated. I was hoping to have it hooked up already. Im going next week to get the parts and diagram so i can finish.
So this is safe to use in a closed garage??
I like that heater, might save up for one for my 2-car garage. I have a wood stove in my 24x24 workshop. I also have 2 of those Tera pumps and love them.
I love a wood stove for sure, but this heater is also nice to have. I do really love those pumps!
I passed.
It's still going strong! Had it on a couple weeks ago and we got sweat out of the garage!
I often crack a door to help ventilate. Has seemed to work well. No, I haven't ever once had the CO monitor go off. I always keep it close by too.
@@IndyFarmLife Thank you!
I used mine 2 years and wanted to change the front metal burner part. They said sorry that model has been discontinued. No parts.
That's odd, because it's still on the market. Maybe they changed the design?
@@IndyFarmLife exactly right they changed them.
LOL I felt like I was there in the garage with the sound effects! That's awesome that it's so stinking quiet. I never use one just because of the fumes but this one seems pretty legit.
Haha it has been a pretty good unit thus far. Very low on fumes and very high on heat output. The best part is how quiet it is.
@@IndyFarmLife Absolutely! I've been in plenty of garages working on cars running a salamander and its so freaking loud you can't have a conversation with the dude right next to you.
Exactly! Technolgoy at its finest!
I think its priming the burn bowl and heating the glow plug for initial start up.
HOLY DAYLIGHT!!!
how much heat are you losing out the sides of your garage door?
Yea, they could be tightened up a little more, but there doesn't seem to be much heat loss. I had it on yesterday and had to shut it off because it got way too hot out there. I honestly like to know that I do have some fresh air coming into the space too.
Hey that unit looks awesome, any concerns with fresh air venting? thanks for posting.
My main concern
How has the igniter been and are you still happy with it? Would you buy it again or go back to a torpedo forced air?
I haven't had any issues with the igniter. In fact, it always lights on the first try. I would certainly buy it again.
Is this for indoors
Thanks!
Would you say it's safe to use inside a garage Carbon Monoxide wise?
I cannot advise you on what to do, but having some element of ventilation is a good idea and I always always always have my CO on and nearby.
Thanks
Nice video. Does it have a gas smell when in use? Why didn't you buy Mr heater floor propane model?
Thanks! No, not really. I didn't want to fuss with propane. I much prefer using diesel.
works with gasoline or electricity
Do you run K-1 or are you burning Diesel #2 right from the gas pump. I have the Master Brand version and want to burn Diesel for ease of buying it over K-1 but haven't dared. I don't want to clog anything up? Thank you!!
I'm buying diesel right from the pump. I'm actually using it this very moment. Save yourself even more cash and buy off road diesel!
@@IndyFarmLife thank you. You didn't have to adjust any pressure on the heater to get a good burn?
@@jeffreyheverly9011 No Sir. I had read about/watched a video where someone said they needed to do that, so I was ready for it. But I just put diesel in it and went for it. I have run through multiple tanks so far with no issue. It has always lit on the first try too. I figure if I had some bit of an issue that would be the first place it shows and take a time or two to lite up. It's solid.

@@jeffreyheverly9011 You're welcome!
That is quiet..my crawfish pot burner is louder than that. Thanks, I like it.
Do you need an exhaust
Do you get any soot from this heater?
Did you have to make an adjustment to the pressure regulator to burn diesel? I just bought one of these and am planning on running pump diesel in it. Read somewhere that was necessary. Anyone know?
Hi Steven, no I didn't have to make any adjustments. I had read that as well and was curious but it fired up every time on pump diesel without any issues. I think you are in the clear!
no just put in the diesel but some of the older space heaters will only burn kerosene. If the heater is diesel compliant it will say so on the unit
You spilled some fuel ⛽️ on the floor does the pump leak? I run #1 kerosene it might burn cleaner (from bulk 🪴 plant)I like that heater
Is your garage insulated?
Yes, it is.
Is this safe? Do you need to have air flow to not breath in emissions?
That is pretty quiet! I have a Propane and a Multi Fuel and they are both loud
Yes! That's probably the best selling point!
Does it smell like diesel though in your garage?
Only if I spill it! ha
Super resistente a bajas temperaturas
I have a Mr Heater torpedo and it is so dang loud we put it outside, crack the door, and aim it to blow hot air in under the raised door. Obviosuly an uphill battle heating a shop with the door cracked..
Give this one a try. You will love it!
Is that a 9010 echo blower or 910 shindaiwa both are the same
It's an Echo 9010. Good eye!
I don't know if I heard this right but like two and a half gallons and 5 hours so it's like 10 bucks every 5 hours let me know if my math is correct
Great review, answered all my questions
Happy to hear it!! It won't be long before it's back in action this year already!
@IndyFarmLife Maybe, I'm up here in N.W Indiana, and last winter was hoody weather.
@Ericec4126 haha well if we have a mild winter, I know who to thank!!!
Dude 😂😂 your entire intro got me😂😂 100% accurate
Hahaha 😆
Does it smell like long salamander heater ?
No moisture or residue problems?
when you said jet fuel for your lawnmower, are you referring to gasoline?
I was just making a joke.
Yea, the heaters you are talking about are bullet proof. I didn't already have one, so I was in the market for something. Opted for something a bit more quiet. Love this thing so far!
They're pretty darn similar to the torpedo's except for the ceramic plate piece. That's the only spot I could see them being less reliable.
Kerosene here in South Texas is $17.00 a gallon
So the question of the day is what do you burn? If you say kerosene then I'm coming to your parties! Haha 😎
How much do they cost 🤔 thanks
There are links in the description.
How much fuel does the tank hold and how long does it last while in operation?
I can't recall off the top of my head but I know I mentioned both early on in the video.
2.7 gallons i think he said. 5 hours of run time. Just replay the video, it's all there.
