I love that they released this film for L. Frank Baum’s birthday! As an Oz nerd, I really love that they decided to celebrate the author who made the Wicked movie possible in this way.
Well, I think Gregory Maguire made it possible a bit more, considering his book loosely based on the LF Baum properties is the basis for the whole plot...
Part of the reason why the musical is being adapted into two separate films is because Jon was unwilling to cut any songs because he knew that the fan base would come after him.
@@sherimarvin5938 that can be also a future Oscars plan. Theatre songs can opt for an Oscar, only original ones. I do think they're praying to not go the Cats path and get some nods.
In the novel Wicked fire IS involved. She lights her broom while threatening Dorothy's life and a piece of the straw flutters off and sets her on fire. In an attempt to save her, Dorothy grabs a bucket that had been collecting rain water and tries to put the fire out, inadvertently melting her.
There's also going to be a baby Nessarose in that flashback scene -- I remember a casting notice going around through disability groups a while ago, looking for a four-year-old girl who uses a wheelchair to play that role. (I'm not sure if they ended up casting a disabled kid -- finding someone in the right age range, with acting ability, who looks enough like Marissa Bode, is a lot of very specific things to ask for -- but I know they at least tried, which I appreciate.)
I hope we see more of the fyero and elphaba romance developed in the movie. In the show I feel it’s very rushed. Here I’m excited to see it explored more.
You know it’s gonna be a good one where Mickey aggressively t̶h̶r̶o̶w̶s̶ has Chistery fly across the room. Also as for Jonathan Bailey’s age, something that just occurred to me is that maybe Fiyero is meant to be older than the other students because he’s never cared about/been good at school and Oz doesn’t allow nepo babies to buy their grades I guess
There are so many ‘nods’ to Frank L Baum’s original Oz books or the fabulous 1939 Wizard of Oz film with Judy Garland. The silhouette of the hand is a nod to Margaret Hamilton’s interpretation of the Wicked Witch of the West - there is a very famous PR photo where she has both hands out in front of her in this position and her shadow is cast behind her on the wall. The book the hand is displayed on in the trailer is a sorcery book on weather! The invitation to the Emerald City has been signed using the full title ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ - the title of the very first book and not just ‘The Wizard of Oz’ which is the name used when speaking about him. The wizard head is giving a nod to the 1939 film and the original drawing from the Baum novel. The Grimmerie comes to life as she casts the levitation spell - its feathers emerging from the pages! In the attic, you’ll see boxes/wooden crates in the background - look closely, on these crates it has the wizard’s real name, Oscar Diggs, and also where he is from in the real world ‘Omaha, Nebraska’ (Wizard’s full full name… Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs) A few of the long shots you can see faint rainbows in the sky - surely a nod to the classic Over the Rainbow. And as you pointed out - she puts her class mates to sleep using poppies - reference to the 1939 film. And of course what greater acknowledgement could you give to the man who made anything and everything Oz related possible - the creator of Oz Frank L Baum but by releasing the new trailer on his birthday!
One thing that I found (similar to Mickey Jo and his confusion over the broken window) in this trailer is that when Galinda gives Elphaba the hat, Elphaba is wearing her awesome glasses, but at the Ozdust Ballroom, she is not wearing them, but in the scene where Galinda (Ariana Grande) is hanging from the chandelier, Elphaba is wearing the glasses.
The biggest thing I'm nervous about is the confusion the trailers are giving to this being one movie for those who don't know they're two. Not only are they showing scenes that are normally in Act 2 in both the teaser and the trailer, but they haven't put "Part 1" in the title of any of the advertising. I feel like a lot of people who are casual viewers are going to be annoyed by that and maybe turned off from seeing part 2. Otherwise, cinematically its stunning and looks like the big movie spectacle I wanted it to be 20 years ago when I was a teen seeing the show for the first time
It kinda feels like the movie musicals which were not promoted as musicals... Like maybe they're afraid this is going to deter people, so their choice is to hide it and have them find out after already having bought their tickets...
I too hope for more Nessa. In the show functions more as a plot device than a fully realized character and more characterization could show us how she evolved into the Wicked Witch of the East. Plus she needs a full solo. I won't let that go.
They have stated that Nessa’s role has almost been removed. They are working more on connecting Glinda and Elphaba and showing that she truly is alone- alone, alone
@@joshuacoldwaterYou just made that up. Even her song is on the movie. The only reason they are not showing her much in the trailers it's because most of her scenes are with Boq
The musical is definitely a much cleaner, tighter story than the book! It's still worth reading for research... I'm loving that the stage dialogue is there and expanded rather than rewritten. I can not wait for the screenshots to get a better look at the costumes! Ozdust feels quite 1920s/1930s - not just costumey flappers, but real fashion from the time. I wonder if they're leaning into the 1930s as a reference to the original film? I love the aesthetic! Gotta agree, the bunting is excessive over the architecture. While I adore the blue bubble dress onstage (although trying to replicate it defeated me!) I think they were right to go with pink for the film, referencing such an iconic moment from the original film. The Grimmerie is a pop-up book?! :D I'm so optimistic about this! They're certainly putting in the effort to do the musical justice!
BroadwayWorld posted a reaction video of 4 members of the current Broadway company of Wicked watching the trailer. They really liked it, applauded & were actually crying at the end! (They know their jobs aren't in jeopardy lol)
I could absolutely never watch a trailer this amazing and talk all the way through it😅I mute literally everything on my phone and say absolutely nothing so I can take it all in.
I loved Aeron adding some lore from the books! I've been meaning to read them for so long, I've owned them for years. I've never been more hyped for a movie in my life - I think I need to read the Wicked series this summer!
What I hope the most is that the snippets of the songs we've heard are "trailer's songs". Because we don't need a new version of Popular with a more poppy sound. The songs are perfect as they are, so I hope it's just poppier for the trailer and that it won't be like that in the movie!
I’m very pleased with what I have seen so far for the Wicked films. Cynthia and Ariana seem to have fantastic chemistry. Cinematography wise, it looks gorgeous and the snippets of the songs are giving me chills. I’m pumped and I am totally buying tickets for myself and my mom for opening night. I agree that Madam Morrible is THE villain of the story, but in my humble opinion, I don’t feel that comes across as strongly in the musical as it does in the novel. In fact, I feel that she is a much more compelling villain in the book. I am excited to see what the fabulous Michelle Yeoh does with this character and hope they gave her a lot of great material to sink her teeth into. I am hoping that the fans of the musical will leave room for this film to be an adaptation and not simply a play by play of the musical on screen. As for the novel, I do think there is material there that could be pulled to flesh out the characters and the relationships between them. One of my favorite moments of the admittedly bleak and bizarre novel is a group scene with Elpheba, Glinda, Boq, Fieryo, Nessa, and a few other friends bonding at a pub after a funeral and they hear Elpheba sing for the first time. I feel that giving Elpheba a real friend group in the early part of the story makes what happens later all the more heartbreaking.
I really hope fans of the musical won't continue from the perspective of comparing every little detail to the stage production. lets just celebrate and enjoy we're finally getting WICKED the Movie!!
Great breakdown, but why would you watch the trailer on your phones versus having it on the screen for us to watch with you? That’s part of the joy of reactions 😅
So the broken window…I would guess that the hot air balloon basket they’re riding up in breaks through the window. If you pause the original teaser, not this trailer, at 0:44 you see Elphaba leap across the gap towards the other window, presumably to break it and fly out. That’s my take on it anyway. What do you all think?
38:20 I think the wizard says look what you've done, lets the monkeys fly around and then in the next shot in the trailer when Elphaba is looking through the glass you can see reflections of things falling from the sky. Maybe the monkeys have shock collars or something that can then stop them from flying.
I’m not an Ariana fan and wasn’t excited for her to be Glinda, but I really appreciate what she is bringing to the character and taking from previous performance. And of course Cynthia is perfectly giving everything I could have ever hoped 💚🩷
I'm not either, but I know she can sing. I've just never liked her acting or her persona. BUT, she's been completely obsessed with Wicked, and Chenoweth's Glinda specifically, since she was a child. If there's any role she can pull off, it's going to be this one, because she is a true fan.
@@sevensongsAbsolutely my exact thoughts! I definitely respect her dedication to it and standing up for the source material. I also love her using a slight accent like the original Glinda from The Wizard of Oz
In trailers they usually use alternative takes to sway the audience. This is what I think they did with madame moribles speech and the alternative riff.. or at least I hope. Also I find it weird being like early 30s.. I remember seeing wicked original cast on the west end but yet people still don't know this show now. It. Was. Huge. Everyone in my school knew about it.
Hi Mickey-Jo! love hearing your thoughts and speculations for the film, I’m so excited and can’t wait to see what the cast brings to their roles! just a side note, for your future videos - Michelle Yeoh’s name is actually pronounced Ye-oh (spoken fast, in one syllable), similar to “Yo”! it actually rhymes with your name 😂 hope you and Aeron are having a great day/night! ☺️
I’m very interested to see how they will do the soundtrack (will we get the whole thing this year or will they just release 2 separate albums 1 for each movie). 🤔
Omigod omigod omigod … so after my best friend posted about it, I watched the trailer on RUclips, and sitting there - both stunned and exhilarated - the next video pops up, and it’s MickeyJo. FINALLY! THE ALGORITHM IS WORKING!! Edit: sorry, I did duck back in to edit my punctuation. I added more exclamation points.
Tbf, I trust in Cynthia and we haven’t heard much of her speaking, but I feel like I might be missing a bit of the proper Elphaba snark. The one scene outside at Shiz with Glinda didn’t really convince me just yet.
my interpretation of it was like a sarcastic 'im pretending I've never realised this before' and she'll revert to snarky after? not sure but im sure Cynthia will do great :)
I think the reason we see only a tiny bit of Dillamond and no Boq at all is to do with visual effects/CGI. I'm assuming the munchkins will be size-adjusted a la the hobbits in LOTR. I'm loving the dialogue changes and also so relieved that they immediately define that Shiz is a university. The stage production bugs me that it comes across like a high school and they never define their ages as it makes the timeline very confusing.
The word is Schwartz has written new songs and more of the book’s narrative will be in the films. As the films will likely be 120-140 minutes each, they need more story.
I feel like the conversation around the movie should include the book more. There are some odd parts but there are off things in all dark fantasies. There are some really great things I hope they pull from the book. I’m most excited for part 2. There’s a lot of wizard of oz lore that I’m sure they are going to flesh out act 2. But also- I really want to see more of what happened during the time jump. I want those loop holes with Fiyero and boq tied as well.
I think the large wicked witch image is a propaganda banner that'll be hung throughout the city, possibly during Morrible's public announcement. Also, the hand shilouette is reminisant of an old marketing ad for the MGM film with Margaret Hamilton.
That what throw me off a bit is because I’m more use to how he looks in the stage musical and I thought we were going to get that in the movie instead we got a CGI goat.
What I've noticed is that a lot of the marketing leaves out the fact that this is a 2 part movie. The end of the trailer just says "Wicked". I wonder if they're deliberately hiding the fact that its a two parter to get more butts in seats, and what the reaction of the general public will be after "to be continued" pops up on the screen when they were maybe expecting a full movie. Fans of the show will know this, but the casual moviegoer who've just seen a trailer before another movie or a poster in a cinema will have no clue.
It’s because those of us who care, already know. The folks who see it for the first act (assuming it’s any good) will gladly buy tickets for the second.
@@andylucas5770 I mean, maybe? I've been at movies where people in the theater got angry at the "to be continued" card on screen because they didn't know that was coming (Across the Spider-Verse) while they really enjoyed the movie up until that point. They were expecting a complete story, and I feel its a valid point to be annoyed after finding out you're not getting that and will have to pay again next year. It seems like a "trick", to get more people to see it. Then again, I get the studios as well for not making it clear, because a lot of people would probably also not see it, or wait for streaming if they knew it was "just" a part one. I'll be there opening day though :)
i saw someone comment (and i kinda agree) that maybe they are playing the two parter similar to the Dune movies. As in it was promoted as "dune" and "dune part two" not dune 1 and dune 2. if that makes sense at all?
I don't know. I keep thinking that serials and cliffhangers have been a part of movies from the beginning. And it is a tried and true "trick". (What are "franchises" like Star Wars and Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings, but serials that might just as well have part 1 and part 2 ad infinitum attached to them? [LOTR does this] In a way, the promotion for Wicked is more straightforward and honest and treats its audiences like grown ups with money.) Audiences were not usually told that what they were paying for and watching would be in multiple parts. The musical theater audience, the Wicked Fans, generic theater fans, John M. Cho movie director fans, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande fans, fans of the book and fans of the stage adaptation - this is enough to sustain the box office. And how will the release be handled? Will part 1 go to streaming before part 2 goes to the big screen? There are pros and cons here. Having part 1 on streaming services could act as a very long ad for part 2 and bring in more people who are not theater fans, musical theater fans or book fans but who, after seeing the stream of part 1, will want to see the glamor of the thing on the big screen.
I don't understand why you can't show the video while you are reacting to it. I know you say something about copyright issues but every other reaction video I've watched always show the video while they are reacting to it.
@@davidkeeley210 even if they are using the phone there is easy ways to sync it up with reaction. I guess the reason why it's done is so the algorithm doesn't bump it down
You mentioned pop princess popular.... I really hope they don't change the soundtrack. Like I get that Glinda is more of the "commercial" look and she does have a poppy style to her, but I don't want a watered down musical theater track that attempts to be poppy which inevitably fails to meet expectations. I want Popular! I don't know how everyone else feels, but I'll be disappointed if that's the case. This is the reason I listen to musical theater to get away from all the pop music. I do like still, but just not in this case....
Sooo...when you review the film whose look will you take on? Maybe Galinda for part 1 and Elphaba for part 2? Here's a public confession, I read the novel a some years before the play primered but have never seen Wicked on stage. Should I make a visit to the Gershwin?
I still can't with the goat. I don't quite know what I was expecting but I wasn't expecting an actual CGI goat lol... But aside from that I am absolutely pumped!!
@@andylucas5770I get it. Reading the books i kind of pictured the Animals more anthropomorphic, physically different from animals, instead of only just being able to talk
@@andylucas5770 I guess I was expecting something closer to the show, a bipedal person with goat prosthetics. But I guess in film form, and blockbuster film, nonetheless, that would probably feel a little out of place
I haven’t read the book- is there enough there to pad this out to two films? I’m definitely excited to see the story developed further between the songs (I think the book of the stage show is its only weaker element tbh) - but part of me also feels that there’s a happy medium to be found here. Conciseness is a skill when it comes to screenwriting. I’m predicting the fans and film critics will be divided over it…
I feel like the same effect could be achieved with Dillamond through the loss of clothes/glasses (obviously associated with humans) as well as losing the ability to talk.
The trailer looks so good and I still have high hopes. I already love Jonathan as Fiyero. The only thing that bothers me a bit, is that the trailer is so long. They show almost too much.
Why didn't you two just watch on one screen and share a pair of earphones? If I can't share my AirPods with my fiancé, I can't share them with anyone 😐
Just playing devils advocate here how is it toxic to say that you think two actresses may be too old for a role? Isn’t that just a critique of the production. I personally don’t have an issue with them playing the characters, but I’m just a bit surprised that a professional theatre critic would consider an opinion as toxic.
I think because I see it extended towards women far more often than men (as well as commentary on their size and appearance) - they both play these characters over a number of years on screen, a certain amount of suspension of disbelief may be necessary. Performances are far more than the perceived age of the actors, and I long for viewers to care as much about the depth of their acting.
So originally I was super excited about the casting, but then with the first trailer I realised Bailey and Erivo look too old for the 1st part. Not sure if they look young enough to play uni students... Also odd thing I noticed is that Erivo's face isn't as contoured as it normally would be in a stage production? I think it's to make her look younger and then in the second part they'll make her make up more glam to show passage of time
The contouring might just be a stage vs screen thing. Stage makeup is usually more pronounced. I do agree with you that they feel too old. It's not just the physical look, it's about how it reads.
I tried watching both your wicked trailer reactions but why on earth would you not put the footage on screen? Why are you watching it on your phones? Have you never seen how a trailer reaction is shot? Everyone puts the full trailer on screen. It’s a trailer. It’s supposed to be shared around. There’s no copyright violation in a trailer. Otherwise there would be no trailer reactions. This is not a trailer reaction. It’s not that hard to make it the right way. It’s not like this is your first video.
@@marilia11p dunno what to tell you, the first 2 attempts I made to upload this video with the footage included got copyright strikes 🤷♂️ On balance the majority of this video is also about analysis of the trailer, but hey - what do I know!
I’m gonna guess that Michelle Yeoh is leaning into the idea of villainizing Elphaba and will pretend to be truly terrified and traumatized by Elphaba, which would explain the choice for “wicked witch” but we shall see!
it's funny to think they're trying to hide that people sing on screen in the movie based on an incredibly famous musical. surely people are going to this BECAUSE they want to see a musical?
The trailer looks great. Good choices all over the place. However, are we all just going to ignore the fact that Ms Grande looks distractingly thin? Perhaps, distressingly thin? She’s definitely going for it though.
I don't like Ariana Grande as Glinda only reason i won't see it and ethan. But I love Cynthia as Elphie. Too bad it wasn't filmed in America and see american ensemble. I'm mostly excited for it only fillm i'm looking forward to. For me it will end at defying gravity then it will anger everybody. Universal doesn't like giving much away. i feel bad idina wasn't able to reprise her role like she wanted too. We don't need two parts. i always forget about Fieyro we don't need him except for the scraecrow moment.

"She's Teresa May!" 😂
The Theresa May of it all… 😂😂😂
Hi Mickey-Jo! love hearing your thoughts and speculations for the film, I’m so excited and can’t wait to see what the cast brings to their roles! just a side note, for your future videos - Michelle Yeoh’s name is actually pronounced Ye-oh (spoken fast, in one syllable), similar to “Yo”! it actually rhymes with your name 😂 hope you and Aeron are having a great day/night! ☺️
I’m very interested to see how they will do the soundtrack (will we get the whole thing this year or will they just release 2 separate albums 1 for each movie). 🤔
as long as i get to hear no one mourns the wicked this year, im good. that sound is literally everything lol
There are so many wonderful nuggets in this trailer. I am definitely going to rewatch it numerous times l
The Renaissance art the trailer still is referencing is Michelangelo’s creation of Adam in the sistine Chapel.
i flew into this video the second i saw you upload!!!
“Goat moment” lol
Other reactors shared the trailer and didn't get copyrighted.
I saw it right when it came out I was so excited and it looks so amazing now I am even more excited.
I wonder if the movie will explain how the Oz is making the Animals lose speech
Dillamond looks exactly how his illustration in the book is.
That what throw me off a bit is because I’m more use to how he looks in the stage musical and I thought we were going to get that in the movie instead we got a CGI goat.
The poster is the propaganda against Elphaba, 'Thank Goodness' I don't think she'll actually be singing when she smashes through the window
26:47 my first thought was grommetik killing dillamond
Some the Wicked movie was filmed behind my house. Defenitely didn't brag to every theatre nerd I know about it.
Have the parents been cast yet? That would be a great opportunity for a IM and/or KC cameo
I'd also love to see Norbert Leo Butz as well
I mean the movie has been shot, so they must have been cast
I mean I guess we do know 1 of the parents 😆
@@Phelie315 you know what I mean lol
Love your reactions!! I love you two so much!! and I love Wicked, duh!!
You can hear the end of the trailer coming from their phones
10:30 I think she is testing the broom 🧹 (like you said)
I also hope to see more Nessarose. She’s the character most underrated to me.
Yes - she’s underdeveloped in the stage show, definitely.
I don't understand why you can't show the video while you are reacting to it. I know you say something about copyright issues but every other reaction video I've watched always show the video while they are reacting to it.
Maybe because they use phones only?
@@davidkeeley210 even if they are using the phone there is easy ways to sync it up with reaction. I guess the reason why it's done is so the algorithm doesn't bump it down
Honestly no idea how the others get away with it - whenever I do this it would get copyright striked!
You never know. It’s probably better for him to be safe than sorry.
@@MickeyJoTheatre have you tried mirroring the video? I know some channels try doing that but I'm not sure if it works or not.
Love it when you two go all twinsie!
Goat is the moment, the moment is goat
YES
I've been waitingggggggggggggg
I love your wicked reactions 💖
The hat reminds me of a tornado.
If you become MickeyJoPictures, I need The Oscar Expert to become the Tony Expert after.
I still can't with the goat. I don't quite know what I was expecting but I wasn't expecting an actual CGI goat lol...
But aside from that I am absolutely pumped!!
Dr. Dillamond is literally a goat. I’m not sure what you were expecting either.
@@andylucas5770Agree….and no one wants a revival of whatever technique they used in the Cats film. NO ONE 😂
There are more than one window in the show
The trailer looks so good and I still have high hopes. I already love Jonathan as Fiyero.
The only thing that bothers me a bit, is that the trailer is so long. They show almost too much.
4:50. "...shit" "shit!"
But the first Star Wars movie had its own self contained ending. Its a bit of a different situation here.
I was so behind killing Doctor Dillamond like in the book...until I saw this trailer haha I don't think we can kill this poor goat. Loved the video!
Honestly MickeyJo....i am missing the full orchestra sound
MOVIE OF THE YEAR! 🩷🫧💚✨ give them all their Oscar right NOW! 🫶🏼
I do miss the tighter clothing of Fiyero from the show. He’s wearing loose clothing here
YAY!
Everyone is loving Lauren Samuels as Elphaba on the USA. Her defying Gravity is on youtube. She got a huge applause and outstanding.
“Everyone”? Never heard of her. 😂
Very pleased to hear that! Lauren is a phenomenal talent who was brilliant for years in London
@@MickeyJoTheatre i'be been waiting for for her to come to usa. people already want her on broadway. also, for sophie evans to come to usa.
@@MickeyJoTheatre Lauren Saumuels sounds like Shoshana Bean which is magical
Omg omg omg
That’s definitely Moribles hand in shadow. If you check out the clip online where you can apply to go to Shiz , she has NAILS !!! Gorgeous claws 😍
@@marilia11p dunno what to tell you, the first 2 attempts I made to upload this video with the footage included got copyright strikes 🤷♂️
On balance the majority of this video is also about analysis of the trailer, but hey - what do I know!
Reaction videos don’t really work when we can’t see what you’re reacting to. Please just mirror image the trailer next time?
I’m gonna guess that Michelle Yeoh is leaning into the idea of villainizing Elphaba and will pretend to be truly terrified and traumatized by Elphaba, which would explain the choice for “wicked witch” but we shall see!
The Greg Maguire book is really dark like rated r.
Am I the only who hears an evil laugh when we first see Elphaba’s boots and her from behind?
it's funny to think they're trying to hide that people sing on screen in the movie based on an incredibly famous musical. surely people are going to this BECAUSE they want to see a musical?
The trailer looks great. Good choices all over the place. However, are we all just going to ignore the fact that Ms Grande looks distractingly thin? Perhaps, distressingly thin? She’s definitely going for it though.
Reaction is total cringe.
