Last time I went through there, east to west on that famous flat two lane highway, the thermometer at the store said 124 F. I had to stop in the middle of the stretch for a coyote that just stood there on the center line of the road glaring at me. He only moved when I tossed half a hamburger out on the dirt shoulder. Kill me or feed me he seemed to say. The toll must be paid. After making the strenuous 20 (ft) hike from the gas pumps to the store, I purchased two 6 packs of extremely tasty Death Valley branded pale ales, a couple of cow skill tee shirts...and headed north to Mammoth / Yosemite. It was a terrifying adventure. The colors of the rock looking down into the plain are some of the most stunning anywhere on earth. (Just to add, the first time, in 1979, in my long bed C-10 with a camper shell, some mushrooms and a Doors cassette...was somehow a less terrifying adventure.)
Robert, I had the same experience with a Coyote on Antelope Island State Park in the Salt Lake. Seems a learned strategy by coyotes throughout the Great Basin!
Nothing says "holiday" like sleeping in a kitchen! Great hike. Love the rock cabin. Cool to sign that book right after Brent! Still snowing in Alberta! 👍😎🇨🇦🔥
