Literally exactly what I thought lmao. Narcissism doesn't mean you're a narcissist either, everyone has narcissistic behavior. Trying to be better or stand out from everyone else out of vanity is rooted in an insecurity in yourself and your identity. Which most narcissistic behavior is. One thing to keep in mind, alternative people are often dressing to go against an oppressive societal expectation or to have solidarity in a subculture, not to be special. Though many people take it as such. If you would still dress how you do and enjoy what you do even if a billion other people did it, you're in the green.

Soon enough, to be an NPC will be the most unique thing possible, and to reject influencer culture and live on a farm in the mountains, while listening to music and wearing clothes you actually like will be the greatest thing you could aspire to.
Growing out of being a teenager and now being a young adult, I’ve come to realize there really isn’t anything wrong liking/loving popular stuff. At first I was ignoring more mainstream stuff, but sometimes the reason that stuff is mainstream is warranted! (Also it was so sad how people would judge people for liking something popular!) I didn’t like Billie Eilish at first, but then when I gave some songs a try, I resonated with a lot of the lyrics and enjoyed the music her brother created, so I just decided to keep listening. That finally let me let go of what others think of me and just enjoy any media I came across. Popular or not.
This video seems more like a critique on tik toc/social media and how they push insecurities in people, which in turn gives them narcissistic behaviours more than it is an analysis on "main character syndrome." Which isnt really addressed.

Absolutely. But communities back then were so much nicer and sincere. Fandom especially had a staying power that is lacking these days. Trends just come and go these days. It took a certain kind of passion to discover music and other hobbies back then. Really had to dig.
Sure it wasn't. It was just more conducive to social interaction. There is no reason for people to be using websites of billions of users driven by reccommendation algorithms. Genuinely miss old internet interactions. You could go onto a forum, interact with your fellow weirdos about your favorite niche topic then hop onto another forum and interact with other weirdos over a different topic. everyone was anonymous, our conversations were over text chats with stupid names. now? nobody's anonymous, everybody is public, you are seen as sketchy if not. you must build a personal brand, you cant just be you. What used to be a great form of escape and a tool to find likeminded people is now a tool keeping you in a depressing continuous cycle of engaging with constant doomscrolling. Perpetually keeping you depressed. pure sludge and slop all the way through. it's awful
The difference I’d say is old internet interactions were more 1 to 1 or 1 to a few. Now they’re 1 to a million. It’s broadcasting and it creates performative discourse.
Finally a comment that doesn’t make me lose brain cells. There’s no sense of community with how social media is structured, I’ve seen how classmates care way too much about “personal branding” and trying way too hard to stand out whilst also not standing out at all because of how inauthentic they are. That’s what the video is trying to say with layers of irony, but this video is mainly being watched by younger gen z kids who don’t really get it.
Exactly, thank you for this. I remembered when I jumped from forum to forum and it felt so private and connected. Now It feels impersonal, empty and dry. I’d like to think we are all the protagonists of our own stories. Example: My friends are the deuteragonists/main characters of my world; meanwhile, my classmates are the supporting characters; and the customers going to my job are the NPCs in my world. But according to those customers, I’m just another NPC working at a store they like to go to occasionally.

6:49 no, things were that way before the internet too. People had their niches, subcultures, groups, etc. If you were with one, you may have been rejected by another for not being "in" enough. If you liked a certain thing, you may have been perceived as "cooler".

The old internet is still there. If you engage with this, you choose to engage with it. The internet augments real life in a way that can be instantly and immediately detached from at any time.
I'm so far from being a normie that it makes me an npc. A glitchy npc that was never supposed to be in the game but you can sometimes see due to a bug.
Ironically if you doesnt give a damn and just live your life, that makes you less of a NPC, rather than being a try hard and always be "cool" and "not like others"
I always had a feeling that I was naturally gonna be someone important someday so I never have to worry about anything it’s peaceful but daunting and scary bc I don’t know what todo ever and I’m paralyzed by stress but it’s so nice that I’m gonna be rich
My favorite is when you meet someone in the wild that’s flying all kinds of flags that show they’re into the same things as you (tattoos, shirts merch) But when you try to make conversation about it they look at you like a crazy person.
most ppl i find aesthetically pleasent /cool tend to be completely empty personality wise which is lowkey a bummer. My guess is that since the internet has made everything so available for everyone, most guys n gals just buy the look without putting the "work" in. I'm not saying that you gotta know every single bit of niche lore about barcelona if you wanna wear a jersey or the entire idk korn discography but DAMN just research the bare minimum

If you like the music you like the music and that's the only thing that matters. Life is too short to be worrying about what others may think.
"You're putting Nico and Rico back to back on the playlist" got me
Man this video is like fresh air in this stinky room called internet. I don't even have this syndrome, i just enjoyed watching this
this is awful

This is literally the message of The Lego Movie, which is the greatest movie ever so
The old internet is still there. If you engage with this, you choose to engage with it. The internet augments real life in a way that can be instantly and immediately detached from at any time.
maybe the real main character syndrome were the friends we made along the way

Damn this video is goated. I was expecting more rage bait ngl.
This feels like the hipster culture making a comeback lol
This video?
I always had a feeling that I was naturally gonna be someone important someday so I never have to worry about anything it’s peaceful but daunting and scary bc I don’t know what todo ever and I’m paralyzed by stress but it’s so nice that I’m gonna be rich
Good luck getting anything out of thin air. On this economy lmfao
IM NOTHING LIKE YALL 😂😂🐟🐟
On me 😂🐟↗️
It’s fucking concerning how many of these albums that I’ve seen I have listened to LMAO Nick Drake being there god damn bro 😂
"theres no such thing as MCs and NPCs, everyone is a unique individual in their own way." - every npc ever
😂😂😂😂 best comment
Thank you for this truly inspirational talk.
im nothing like you guys. because im a loser not the main character
Same😢
My favorite is when you meet someone in the wild that’s flying all kinds of flags that show they’re into the same things as you (tattoos, shirts merch) But when you try to make conversation about it they look at you like a crazy person.
most ppl i find aesthetically pleasent /cool tend to be completely empty personality wise which is lowkey a bummer.
LEAVE ME AND MY MUSIC ALONE
i used to just see your video titles / thumbnails in my recommendations feed & id think "oh brother this guy is so annoying" but i finally decided 2 actually WATCH one of ur videos & ur lowkey so real
the way to win here is to consume content in moderation and enjoy what you love with others like you :)
i love getting recommended content that in zero way do i understand
4:27 KURT KURT KURT KURT (I dont think im different for listening to nirvana, everyone loves nirvana I just have nirvana brainrot and just seeing a member makes my brain have 51 songs stuck in my head at once!!!!! WOOOO)
Joeyy isn’t a “micro celebrity” he’s a movie celebrity. 📸
8:04 Me reciting random rap lyrics that are stuck in my head to myself at 3AM
