Exactly two things can be true at once. Wanting fame and hating it makes total sense. You want to share your art, be successful, inspire people. But fame also comes with lack of privacy, a new lifestyle, and probably an impact on someone’s mental health. I think it’s normal to dream of being a rock star and plan art out and everything even if someone comes off as careless. When you’re famous, I’d assume you are probably concerned with how the public see you and your art.
Honestly, I think the Beatles were the best rock band when it came to interviews. People would ask them the dumbest questions and they’d handle it with wit and sarcasm, and made the interviewers look like fools. John Lennon was especially good at this.
@kurdt1012 fr, I don't know what this dude expected Kurt to have on his list, some death grips? Some 100 gecs? Like please for a teenager in the 80s this list is amazingly good and full of gems. This dude in the video is just a casual listener I guess...
@@industrialworld1 the two dudes who run this channel are among the cohort of terminally online zoomers who performatively hate The Beatles because they're them. They probably saw that Kurt appreciated the Beatles (as do most actual musicians) and wrote the whole list off.
Kurt Cobain's 50 records list is life changing. A ranking with artists such as The Vaselines, Butthole Surfers, Pixies, Wipers, Breeders, Black Flag, The Clash, The Beatles, Beat Happening, Sonic Youth and Daniel Johnston? That list is the perfect introduction to punk, indie, and DIY music. One of the greatest and most out there album rankings by anyone ever, it shows Kurt Cobain's passion for DIY music and it's outstanding to say the least.

@JN-so6wt its so cool u said this, one thing i could also point out about trent is that he has stated how important it is to do music genuinely, above everything else, and well im convinced that kind of attitude implies the same when it comes to the way you act in general, or at least when it comes to how he shows himself he's really a role model in more than one way
@JN-so6wt Proud of my comment making you reveal this idea. Nine Inch Nails deserve to receive a spotlight, not by Downward Spiral only but as a image of Trent Reznor, Who And Why Is Trent Reznor.
@JN-so6wtthe availability of music for listeners is the only positive thing to come out of online, and anyone crying about not wanting to pay it is more whining than Metallica did, just cuz Metallica doesn’t need money doesn’t mean other artists wouldn’t. I’m glad you could feel superior in the 90s but in hindsight there’s not that much to be proud of in that regard. Music is in a worse state, just a fact. Creativity itself is in a worse state
@@matiassanchez7634how can you do music genuinely when the industry doesn’t allow it thanks to people crying about lying artists? Those people could devote their lives to their art, meanwhile that thought disgusts people these days, they want the money in the hands of the government or the corporations, and of course the corporations are winning.
That list was probably made inn the late 80s or early 90s when the majority of those records were still largely unknown and obscure. You couldn't just google bands or download albus, you had to be lucky to be in the right town or city and know the right people. You couldn't just be a computer nerd and passively become aware of any of those albums. You had to actually be cool... Dylan 110% purposely calculated his image and backstory. Im suprised you didnt include the interviews where he said he ran away to live with the circus at 13 and the one where he explains he was a prostitute.
It might be a bit too Gen X for you but the cult Australian band TISM might be worth looking into: they’re infamous for their interview demands. @VioIetRamirez the reason he seemed like a walking contradiction is cause he did want fame but also was aware enough to know that wanting fame wasn't cool within the punk rock circle. Thats why his private writings contrast with what he said publicly. He got everything he desired and he knew what he was after from the start. In this sense he was a massive poser and thus full of shit
What i miss in here is what Pearl Jam did in their height of their fame. They have given only a small amount of interviews, Nirvana gave more of them. They did not produce any videos to promote three of their albums, Nirvana did it on In Utero, they fought against Ticketmaster and they never looked after Ten to get their old sound back. Would have been easy for them in the wave of Postgrunge and the success of bands like Staind or Nickelback to go back to their sound on that album, but they stood true to themselves. To say it in the words of Jacob Bannon of Converge: "What I naively misconstrued as a major label sham was actually a true collection of musical misfits. Pearl Jam found each other organically, just like our band did. They never wanted to play anything but honest, emotional music, just like our band played. And they’re all intensely different individuals, just like our band is. Pearl Jam wasn’t cool or hip, and didn’t claim to be. They were awkward kids, just like us. The closer I looked, the more parallels I saw to my own efforts and motivation. Though we played at different volumes and to different ends, we carried something similar in our blood. What I mistook in them as calculated was actually a very different “c” word entirely: character. They were a form of rebellion back then and I was just too stubborn to realize it. Pearl Jam’s bitterness towards the industry was very real. As promising kids, they innocently teetered on the edge of something spectacular only to be shoved off the edge by big business interests. They plummeted through the air, not ready to be the band that the world demanded them to be. The external pressures that cursed them at the peak of their ’90s powers could’ve crushed coal to diamonds. Miraculously they survived the fall and matured into a personal and political musical powerhouse."
Where have you quoted this from? I'm a Converge fan and I'd like to read more. This sort of echoes some comments from Mark Arm of Mudhoney, which toured with both Nirvana and Pearl Jam. He said that he was apprehensive about touring with Pearl Jam but found that in reality Nirvana was the band with all the scummy or fake music biz people surrounding them.
Many of these people were on drugs. Assuming they were all acting in a premeditated way would be pretty stupid. I'm also surprised that to some people the idea of not giving a fuck is so foreign that they assume it to be an act.

My uncle is a hermit outdoorsman whos lived in the woods for decades writing and recording music that no one has ever heard. It just sits in his cabin, accumulating. That dude is the epitome of not caring.
This is the most disjointed and incoherent video essay i’ve seen on youtube, it was just a guy ranting about how much he hates kurt cobain, and then making fun of him for killing himself
I think you've got Kurt Cobain all wrong, probably the result of projection tbh. Yes Kurt Cobain cared about his appearance, obviously. The point is he cut his own hair. he had a style that he knew looked good on him. His diy mindset mixed with his astronomical success is what makes him genuinely impressive. And diy is real authenticity, it shows dedication. In fact, his diy mentality perfectly aligns with his disdain for MTV (bc big corporation vibes), and his calling MTV to make sure they were playing his music perfectly aligns with his dedication to his band. On another note, jokes and irony aside, living with your worldview seems like it would be really really hard. I know what you'll say: "I ain't reading all that". Then you'll never develop past this weird ass vibe you've cultivated my dog. This isn't even a hate message I'm like genuinely worried for you
I don't understand what this has to do with anything he said. Point is he would go on and on about not caring about what people think about him and his music whilst he cared more than any rockstar ive ever seen, and constantly complaining about popularity whilst making sure he will be as popular as possible. He was a huge hypocrite but so are most people. Dude is not saying hurr don't listen to Nirvana durr. He made a video about how artists present themselves to the audience via interviews. Just so happens that Kurt Cobain was very cringy with it. Kinda like a teenage girl we all had in middle or high school who created a whole personality around not caring about anything or anyone, claiming her clothes are all randomly picked in a thrift store because she just ddoooooonttt caaareee at allll whilst in reality she spends every free moment of her life in clothing stores trying to make the most casual "I don't care" fit possible... As I got older I realised that although it is funny, its usually a sign of high insecurity and unhappiness with yourself, so now it's more sad than anything.
@@aw2584 I mean undoubtedly he was insecure and unhappy, and yeah an absolute hypocrite, which is reflected in his lyrics all the time. That being said he did accomplish very impressive things. Other than that I just find this creator insufferable as hell
in response to you saying “in interviewss kurt looked uterly bored like he’d rather be anywhere else” thats how opiate users are and he woulda rather been at home
That don’t care attitude wasn’t something that they did, it was almost forced to them, it’s not like they never wanted MTV not to play their videos and not be popular but steer clear of all the bullshit press and media they were receiving, I’ve seen it happen literally 30 years after Kurt’s death, people trying to take things out of context and label him and band and make a big story. Nirvana were always getting interviews before they were popular as well and there is a shit ton of them, most of them had the same repeating questions but the band decided to answer and do it anyways. Another reason was Kurt was very self aware of the fact that he was influencing other fans and kids who were trying to be like their ‘favourite junkie rockstar’ and he clearly didn’t want that, he mentions this in an interview on 11/8/93, he was aware of the negative attention he and the band received and Kurt literally preached not to believe everything you read. He had to be very careful with what he said and it’s not surprise when you’re a young adult just a couple of years older than the legal drinking age and you have the whole music industry’s expectations and pressures on you after you worked off so hard for that to happen you would definitely need to approach things in a different manner. If you’ve ever spent time on Interviews with just Kurt alone he provides quite thoughtful and insightful responses, he’d lie around the band though, there was a lot of tension and honestly alot of shit going around at that time period which will need a entire 30 page report on it. Can’t hate on him since he gave the stage to literally most modern artists that got influenced by him and now influence your favourite artist. I
@@jyjjy7 I wouldn’t know, I’m saying if that’s the entire point of this video. I’m guessing, but that’s so lazy, uninspiring, and not cringey in the way he’s wanting
Beck had the microcassette recorder with him because he'd originally used it for some spoken word tracks on Stereopathetic Soulmanure & would replay those tracks on stage while touring stuff off of that album
Yeah.. this guy is a bit dim disregarding context in a lot of his examples. Or just exploiting people's want to be enraged in the current day with the shit they consume on the internet. Completely disregarding how much of an effect mental health has on your state of being and pushing his own holier than thou sense of self. Complete lack of empathy.
i think there’s a lack of sensitivity in this video surrounding kurt cobain’s death, i don’t think using that to further your point about the whole “pretending to not care” persona or whatever is at all valid. he was a real person and ppl can change their views over time, he may have wanted to be famous when he was like 18 but by the time he was a massive phenomenon it just became too much for him.
yeah. at the end of the day, Nirvana were just three guys. We can't imagine what Cobain experienced or what fame is like. holding that against him seems weird.
He says in his last interview that he has changed his approach to life after having a child From what I can tell he was genuine but people who want to act like clowns their whole life will say it’s inauthentic or selling out to actually just become wise Which is wild
Some people just want to feel excepted & loved. Fame can temporarily curb that craving but comes at the cost of possibly engulfing a person entirely. “Peace, Love, Empathy” -Kurt Cobain
I think it’s funny you talk about how Gen Z is finding a way to be irreverent without putting anyone down, and 1/3rd of your video is absolutely shitting on Kurt Cobain’s life and legacy.
Yeah because he was talking about the previous generations when referencing Kurt and showing the flaws within that generation's style of interview. you cant seriously be this rtarded
why am i being recommended 'edgy teen shits on people who made interesting creative contributions to culture to feel better about not putting time and energy toward their own creative pursuits' videos? I'm 30 lol i don't need this mean spirited shit. youtube, get it together!
The guys from Nirvana had some dark sense of humours, i rattled some nirvana redditors over shotgun shells that’s called kurt, saying he would have loved that, and i meant that he would have loved that joke. You can guess what happened.
And he also pre-scripted wisely his own death by suicide, and that was really good marketing move. Nirvana and him became legend out of it. The list of his best albums is awesome, you don't know shit.
I loved and appreciated people like Kurt Cobain and Michael Stipe who didn’t like that whole “sex drugs n rock n roll” image and lifestyle. It’s destructive and nihilistic and reactionary. The whole idea of the “rock god”, and doing hard drugs and getting into fights and abusing women and treating others like shit is just the worst, and people Stipe and Cobain actively fought against that image and posture, and I will always be grateful for that! ❤
You went from interviews to going on a tangent hating on Cobain for no reason, also you guys literally do what all of these artists do and act nonchalant and chill to the public to seem cool
Yeah cobain was a literal heroin addict so im sure a lot of the time in interviews he was legitimately irritatable with interviewers. I feel like there were times he probably appreciated being in a famous band and getting tv and radio placements instead of some of the hair metal bands but there were probably other times where it was too much and he was overwhelmed and despised himself cus he knew he was looked up to while being a depressed addict.
That 5 minute Kurt Cobain rant had about fuck and all to do with the thesis of the video. Almost like the guy who made this literally just wanted to bitch about Kurt.
The cover to Dinosaur Jr's album Was painted By Angry Johnny from Angry Johnny and the killbillies. In my opinion he was one of the Grandfathers to folk punk.
I doubt anyone has heard of one third of that list much less listened to. Having said that, after going through the list I'm reminded how annoying it was that nirvana and other bands from the time and place pushed the whole feminism bit. He's trying very hard to think of all the girl bands he can with this list. Listing 2 breeders albums and Mazzy Starr in there and too many others in a top 50 is as cringe as seeing Steve Miller 30 years later accepting an award and saying there needs to be more women in rock.
I feel like this kid is trying to tell me what to think. He wasn't even born yet when Rock was Rolling . I saw that Beck and Thurston interview when they first did it. It was funny and down to Earth.
All I know about Kurt Cobain Is that he was a tortured artist (though Novoselic and footage says otherwise) who wanted to be big enough to be known, but not mainstream where everyone knows them. I think thats whg he hated the fame, he didn’t, he just didn’t want to be famous In the mainstream. He wanted to do more, but didn’t know how to take that leap.
I feel like he wanted to be in that Dinosaur Jr./Pixies sweet spot: Enough of a following to tour for the rest of his life but small enough that he could reasonably walk down the street without being bothered. Plenty of musicians occupy that space, including artists that Kurt himself idolized, he just happened himself to blow up harder than anyone.
He's talks like a kid who just found out that Santa isn't real. "Lyke U mean people in entertainment curate their own image and what they say isn't always in accordance with who they really are... Whaaa?" Sounds like he was born yesterday.
Meta irony apparently its Gen Z way of indulging in irony while denying it “Yeah I know that Kurt was ironic and aware of it and I’m aware of how I’m also doing that so that makes it better because layers of irony”
I think so many people misuse social media that it obscures the mystery behind their band. I also think we should go back to artists having a "look". I think it's super cool when the look of a band matches the sound, at least for the promo work and concerts. The whole "I'm just a nerdy kid who wears whatever" is kinda silly bc everyone is doing it now.
It really depends on how powerful and true the muzik is. Talent is what makes a ROCK$TAR be cool along with being mysterious and producing muzik that is relatable to the listeners 🤙🏼🎸🥁
Listening to Kurt's Top 50 Albums made me live for punk rock! calling it weak is very funny to me.. you're already being biased about your music taste but i'd give it to ya, it's hard to get into that kind of music if you dont have an open mind, ive listened to grunge, classic rock, pop punk, metal and everything but when i got into punk rock it was very inspirational and i related alot to that kind of music and it really helped my rotting mental health in this shitty world, playing/listening to punk was freedom, the DIY ethics play whatever u want no matter how bad of a musician/singer u are as long as it's w/ passion and creativity, that kind of music made me get an electric guitar and plan to start a band. i believe that's what happened to Kurt too listening to Hardcore Punk/Underground scene in the 80s and combining it w/ pop elements he already had the formula.
To be cool is to be silent and in life you will almost never regret not saying something. Great essay, I've always found the relationship between interviews and musicians so fascinating in the way we hear them so often but also never at all. It is in a way building value to each of your words.
One small note: the term "teenager" actually came about in the 1920s, though you are correct about it being created as a marketing term. Great video tho
I love that the "don't care" attitude of the 90s became so popular that it became the norm basically, which is ironic because it was to go against to norm. Now anyone that look like they actually care will seem as a tryhard, but not caring is also overused and therefore a bit cringy. Like a local band posting something like "yeah btw there's an album in the making" but they were making it for 1 year of hard work.
trying hard to seem like you don't care is actually what being a tryhard is, not openly showing how much you care and letting the world know it. that's like the opposite of "tryhard", it's sincere, natural and genuine.
I grew up in the "Grunge" area of the very early '90s. Is it possible or has it ever occurred to anyone that Kurt wanted more than anything to be a rockstar when he was a young teenager dreaming of it and writing about it in his notebooks. He wanted to be low-level famous, not the most famous musician in the world. But then when It actually happened to him in real life he realized how much it sucked to have all that attention put on him and how much pressure there was being cast as "the voice of a generation" like he was the next John Lennon. I do not believe Kurt was putting on an act or playing a bullshit character as the video suggest. He just got caught up in a situation where he became 100 times more famous than anyone would have ever thought possible.
They don't care. Interviews always felt like poser or sellout shit that you were forced to do by a label to get push. It felt disingenuous and guys hated it. Almost to a person and through any era this seems to ring true. That's not an act for Mascis, he's socially inept and just hates talking to people like that. I don't know if you weren't alive in the 90's but this seems to be a trend of people who weren't there when they look back at the time, they completely misunderstand. This wasn't an act for most, there was a general listlessness in the 90's due to economic and social reasons, that had people burnt the hell out. This is also the half of the Shoegaze "scene" that people completely forget when they are fumbling over themselves to say it was about staring at shoes "cuz fx". The same listlessness can be found in BritPop like Suede, Oasis and Blur from the same era. But holy shit, nailing Adam Friedland, Ian Fidance and the nasal twins like that was brilliant.
Spot on. I love this channel as it keeps me keyed-in on the thoughts of young culturally keyed-in whippersnappers, but holy hell…sometimes it’s jaw dropping. I mean…pause on that list of Cobain’s top 50 albums he calls “weak,” for example. Look it over. Let that sink in.
Lots of interviewers are very entitled tho. The risk of interviewing someone is that you're getting into their personal life and space and if you don't do it propperly the interviewed will possibly start having an attitude or downright get mad. Sometimes the interviewer style is completely incompatible with the artist. A lot of people like nardwar style for being wacky and funny but his in your face style, his casually throwing personal data of the artist might and have infuriated a lot of people and rightly in my opinion. The interviewer is not a police officer questioning a suspect and the artist has the power to say i don't like where you're going, i want you to take a step back and a lot of interviewers get offended by it and try to push it further. I'm just saying both people are humans and, like any other human interaction, respect must go both ways for it to work.
I think your Kurt analysis has some important insights though I don’t agree with all of it. I want to say though that Kurt went out of his way to buy vintage clothing which was already normal fare for the punk rock world both sides of the Atlantic and people who like that stuff knows it takes a bit more effort to get than just going to a department store. So I dunno I don’t think it’s dressing like you don’t care. People in Olympia still dressed like that when I lived there.

Oh thanks for replying I was trying to find this video because I also wanted to add that hippies would buy pioneer style clothing and I think typically tried to buy the old authentic vintage stuff. Point being it’s not a new trend and “countercultures” probably have been doing that for much longer.
Kurt was literally poor 90% of his life, quite literally didn’t have the opportunity to invest in fashion, it was just something that got ingrained in his life out of necessity, also the layers of clothing was due to him hating how skinny he was (and track marks) coupled with the fact that the northwest was cold as fuck, it was normal for him and other guys from that area to do that, he didn’t have to change because he got popular and tried to remain authentic to himself and his roots
Kurt didn't buy "vintage" he bought resale. Which was no more difficult than shopping at department stores. In fact, it might have been even easier. If you lived in a city or a college town, like most of those bands did, then you had a Salvation Army or Value Village-style store to buy clothes from. Because they were usually located in a downtown area, they were easier to reach if you didn't have a car. Kurt's cardigans and flannels were probably around 2 or 3 dollars a piece. I assume he went to department stores for socks, underwear, and his Chucks. And, probably his jeans, since new jeans weren't expensive back then. Resale jeans were hit or miss depending on your size. But they were normally around 2 or 3 dollars.
The part about doing heroin for "hot girl stomach problems" is really sick and disrespectful. I understand not liking Cobain and all but as an ex-opiate addict I can say that this is just not okay.

@@Ac_Adapter Best comment here for what it's worth.
trying hard to seem like you don't care is actually what being a tryhard is, not openly showing how much you care and letting the world know it. that's like the opposite of "tryhard", it's sincere, natural and genuine.
He just got caught up in a situation where he became 100 times more famous than anyone would have ever thought possible.
for the time Kurt’s top 50 album list is crazy, having the shaggs alone is based.

But holy shit, nailing Adam Friedland, Ian Fidance and the nasal twins like that was brilliant.
dog i don’t care
@@NeoPunkFM Don't reply?
actually he was acoustic
@@NeoPunkFM you guys are lame
Very well written and entraining. Keep up the good work man.
People in Olympia still dressed like that when I lived there.
you did not know him
@@volatilemolotov667hes not even talking about him in this comment he's talking about clorhing lmao. stop trying to sound like the smartest one in a comment section
But they were normally around 2 or 3 dollars.
that last line was everything sis
The bias runs strong through you.
surprised daron malakian wasn't mentioned, he's well known for being genuinely aggravating in interviews
Serj has some pretty iconic moments too
Fellatio
thanks for doing this, great value
I love Dylan's interviews. They're a kinda funny twist on all of the nonsense angles that interviewers try to come at artists with.
The part about doing heroin for "hot girl stomach problems" is really sick and disrespectful. I understand not liking Cobain and all but as an ex-opiate addict I can say that this is just not okay.
Yeah that part rubbed me the wrong way
What the heck was that line on kurt's suicide man. What point are you trying to prove with that disrespect?
Several decades of knowledge pumped into 15 minutes, i watched this and felt like a year had passed.
Golden.

I wonder if caring a lot more than everyone else can get me anywhere. Instead of nonchalant I can be overly critical
