- Three McNeilus XXC rear loaders are featured here, working in the Soho/Chinatown area. This highly specialized model refuse body was beefed up from the XC (extra compaction) to be even stronger and heavier for the New York/New Jersey market. thanks to the crews at each of the three companies featured

The first two guys were at two different speeds, for every one box tossed into the truck by one guy, the other would toss about three boxes!

In my area "manual" collection seems to be slowly going away, it's not the way it use to be! I was able to work a summer job as a loader, I don't think you can do that in my area now

I’m a city sanitation worker but these private sanitation guys are built different. It’s not easy doing that kind of work 12 hours 6-7 nights a week. Hats off to them.
I know…the money is good but it’s not sustainable. It’s gotta catch up to them by their 40s and 50s

Oh damn don't they have bins? You don't do that the rest of your life. I'm 51 and i was a garbage man, i cannot do that anymore and i'm to old for that work. Respect to those people in NYC
you know how much I love my job but being asked to load 300lb bales by hand wouldn't make me happy. but I kinda liked that last truck the most. NYC has its own "big city so this truck has to be loud" thing going on and I love it. even more ironic to witness 1500 rpm when the packer is slow or even at the home position and stationary, which also is a distinctly New York thing
That company that owns the last truck is very niche, owned by a Chinese guy who serves mostly Chinese businesses, they have no more than 10 trucks I believe. You can imagine his fleet is made up of some interesting stuff, including at least one ex-DSNY unit. Reminds me I need to edit that one…

Am I correct in assuming that the majority of the rubbish is empty cardboard cartons - if so - what about recycling/ or does that not happen in NYC?
Why wouldn't you back the truck up closer to the trash or have it in the middle and than move foward

Is there any visual difference between regular RL, a XC, and an XXC?
The XC has thicker steel and thicker pack cylinders than a standard, and the XXC has even thicker steel. You can tell by observing whether it has a big 3.5 yard tailgate (seen here) or a 3 yard tailgate (look at any WM truck). To answer your question it's not obvious, but pretty much every McNeilus in NYC/NJ is an XXC
