Blasting isn't for stripping, it's to create the proper surface for powder adhesion. Stripper is for cleaning. Blaster would clean but take too long and risks digging ditches in the wheel.
@phiksit the strip with acid then sandblast to prep and bake at 400°c to out gas which also dries them completely and then powder coat the whole thing so no moister can reach the aluminum

You have an awesome set up! I dream about having a shop like that, all the professional grade equipment you could ever need within a few steps from each other! Also really appreciate all the tips on gun distance and settings.
Great video. I always throw a high build primer on first when the wheel is hot to cover most of the corrosion and any imperfections that I might have missed in the blaster. Hitting it hot also helps to prevent dotting on the powder if you’ve not out gassed for long enough. Something which can often happen with heavily corroded wheels. Also easier to see any areas that might need a little extra primer as it flows out as soon as it hits the wheel. Primer is usually much cheaper to buy than the colour you’re powder coating so long term it can work out more cost effective to primer the whole wheel on a corroded wheel and then second coat the face and inside bowl with the colour. All depends on customers expectations I guess. In England our weather and the products used by the local car washes means we’re forever doing corroded wheels
Love the video! Thanks for sharing. What kind and size of compressor do you run? I don’t think my 5hp duel stage would do it Lol. Keep up the great job 👍
Great information only thing I could recommend is explaining your tech talk as I’m now more informed on the process of powder coating from a visual step by step process. . F***k the haters !

Great video and fantastic job on those wheels. Dumb question for heavy corrosion from salted roads: when are wheels best scrapped rather than attempting to re-finish? I've read lots of contradicting answers

Insightful comment. No, there's no point in putting this amount of professional time into wheels that you can pick up for less. Either bodge, or replace, this process is a labor of love.
What size is the strip tank? How many gallons does it take to cover 4 wheels? Is it just mild steel and if so what gauge? Was wanting to build one also.

For someone at home and a DIY’er - is the only option lots of sanding to get a good finish? I notice you had that blasting booth and that was awesome! Would the steps be sand, wheel buff, polish, and then clear coat for someone at home?
How long do you bake them for ? What temp do you bake them for? If you lay them down vs hanging them would that effect the drying process when baking them ( damage the finish)
All I would add is try using a high build primer on corroded wheels it will hide the pinholes and give you a super smooth base to lay colour on also I hot flock far quicker 👍

Hi, great video! How do you work around wheels that have heavy corrosion like the wheels in your video? Don't you deal with outgassing issues without using primer?
That would be the answer personally I prime all my wheels with outgas forgiving prime. We will sand corroded spots at that point therefore using it as a filler reprise if necessary color and clear

Real curious why you acid dipped to remove the clear coat. Wouldn't the sand blasting serve the same purpose?
Yeah I’m pretty sure it would I think he was trying to plug a product considering his hired hand didn’t know how to properly rinse them
Needs to be dipped. Then sand blasted
Blasting isn't for stripping, it's to create the proper surface for powder adhesion. Stripper is for cleaning. Blaster would clean but take too long and risks digging ditches in the wheel.
Why no metal prep / acid etch before coating? What keeps the aluminum from corroding again when moisture eventually penetrates the coating?
