- Many of the lighthouses in New Brunswick, Canada have closed, but the revolving brights on Machias Seal Island continue to shine thanks to Doug Laugher. To beat the solitude, the dedicated second-generation lighthouse keeper stays busy with small tasks and doesn't mind the "escape from reality." Spending my early childhood on lighthouses I found the comment on boredom especially interesting. To this day more than 50 years after leaving my last lighthouse as a kid I never become bored. Living on the islands taught me that.
One of the dreams of my childhood: to leave on the island and look after the lighthouse.

Luckily Canada still has staffed lighthouses, 27 in BC and 23 along the East Coast. They are staffed and maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard so if your dream is to become a lightkeeper then you need to move to Canada and apply!

I think I wanted to be a lighthouse keeper for a while because I had the desire to not exist. Its nothing malicious or sad, its just feeling like you want to disappear. Its weird, you'd only understand the feeling if you've felt that way before.
anyway I now associate lighthouses with those feelings.

I was on Machias seal island for a week of training back in the late 70s for satellite land surveying. Pitched tent within sight of the lighthouse.
It’s night time & you’re alone in the lighthouse when there’s a knock at the door .. what do you do ?
Open it
Load the shotgun...then open it.
Shoot through the door

I would point out that the solitude is disturbed daily by birders from the mainland visiting that island to view the puffins, auks and murres.
Every time I read about lighthouse keepers they're always single. Are they not allow to have families with them on the island???
Depends. Historically, many lighthouses were built with a single keeper and their family in mind. But some were manned by shifts of several rotating keepers that switched out every few weeks, rather than a single keeper. Those were rarely encouraged to bring their families, due to the hassle of moving so many people in and out so often.
Lighthouses in BC are set up so that both the Principal and Assistant Keepers can bring their families. Both AK and PK have their own dwellings that are primarily 3 bedroom houses and so are set up for a good size family. There is only 1 station in BC that does not allow you to bring families and that one is pretty cramped as it is a rock lighthouse with the dwelling constructed as part of the tower on a pile of rocks in the middle of nowhere.

It’s definitely one of the most interesting Canadian islands out there, with America thinking they own it.
A lot of people are fascinated by going to the future but I would do almost anything to go to the past and figure out all the stuff we cannot awnser

TheLastHylianTitan the lighthouse doesn’t need to be manned, they just send him there to maintain a bs claim over the land when the treaty of 1782 clearly stated it was Massachusetts land. Congrats the British built a lighthouse on our land and now the Canadians claim it as theirs.
