5W20 came about to meet Federally mandated CAFE standards for fuel economy. PERIOD. The engines internal clearances were not changed to accommodate 5W20. Same engines in other countries call for 5W30. Use whatever turns you on. I run 5W30 in all three of my vehicles, and 2 of them have over 200,000 miles on the odometer. No noises on cold startups, no side effects of any kind. Engines seem quieter on extremely hot days( like now).

0w20 and 5w20 are destroying engines from all manufactures! The new VVT engines have 3X the moving top end parts that are getting less oil to those parts. A thinner oil once warm is draining back into the pan as the engine is turned off…a thicker oil stays on the valve train at startup and protects parts better-period! This is all CAFE standards driven. Ford is having horrible problems, Chrysler Hemi’s have ticking problems (do a search on RUclips). Even Toyota is having problems. You can disagree all you want but numbers don’t lie. Do an oil analysis on a 5K run on 5w20 and one on 5w30. Then look at the iron and aluminum wear numbers. Then look at the fuel dilution. All in love…but it’s ridiculous these engines are garbage after just 100K.

You can use 5w30 in a motor that calls for 0w20 or 5w20 all day. The only time I would go with a 0w, is if I'm in tempatures that go below -20F. There is little difference between a 20 and a 30.

This comment comes from experience and having two 3.6l pentstars in my 2013 jeep jkus. Pennzoil is great oil, however when it comes to the 3.6l pentstar the shear strength is not enough for what this engine requires. Bought mine at 70k miles and it would burn a quart every 1000 miles. At 120k due to it burning so much oil one of the exhaust valves on the driver side bank was burnt through and led to a misfire. Following the teardown all six pistons were beyond black, cooked on oil scum on every piston head. Fast forward six months and a remanded Jasper engine swap using Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 I was still losing oil between oil changes which I do at 5k miles as started from the factory. Upon further investigation and some really great help from a local auto-parts supplier I discovered that the base stock Pennzoil and several other brands use have weak shear strength. Now at first I wasn't completely convinced, but after doing my own research and an oil change with Wolf's Head brand full synthetic oil and driving for another 5k miles. . .there was less than a 1/8 of a quarts missing. Same driving, mostly highway and around town but (almost) all 6 quarts were recovered from this oil change and I no longer have to add oil every time I full up at a gas station. Currently I am still running Wolf's Head 5W-30 but will be trying out Schaffer's 9000 series 5W-30 as I'm lucky enough to have a dealer with in 40 mins of my location. But in short I would recommend for anyone who has similar oil consumption issues to stop using any of these brands that have weak shear strength. They advertise that their products provide great protection and superiors performance, which is true these are great oils but not if you're trying to not have to worry about how much oil is in your pan. Another thing to point out is that most of the advertisement's these companies use are for race applications which is indicative of needing a high quality oil to get them through a race. . .but that's just it. . .only one race and then their teams either preform an oil change and analysis or complete tear down. They're not going through stop and go traffic, highway usage or long idle durations. As I said before Pennzoil and others like it are great oils but for this engine you need an oil that can handle the 5k oil change intervals which Pennzoil platinum 5W-30 is not up to the task. . .don't even get me started on their 5W-20, were talking more like two quarts every 500-1000 miles. *As a side note I'd just like to give my 2 cents on using 5W-20, DONT its not worth it better to use 5W-30 and protect your engine and sensitive components like your oil pump and cooler.

And as a side note if you’re still burning oil between oil changes try semi-synthetic from a good brand like wolfs head, Amalie(they own wolfs head), or another brand. Only reason I don’t say use Pennzoil is because it has become so hard to find their “Pennzoil GOLD” synthetic blend over the past few years. Again it comes down to shear strength as well as how well the oil will hold up with how hot these engines get.
Also, Chrysler fills these engine from the factory with conventional oil and several people (both from forums and me questioning dealer employees) have stated that there is no benefit to use full synthetic unless you’re in the extreme cold. Best of luck🤙

I have 2022 wrangler 18k miles, got the tick and had to have passenger side cams rockers lifters replaced under warranty, I had the free oil changes with 0w20 from the dealer since I had the jeep... when I got it back I drove 100 miles and changes the oil because I thought if I had the tick the oil may be contaminated. It smelled like it had crazy fuel dilution when I change it and it only had 1500 miles on the oil. Maybe from the valve not opening correctly with the colapsed rocker. The dealer did the work and did not change the oil. The Charger 2022 has the same motor, but without the start stop in the wrangler and says 5w20 and if that is not available 5w30. So why the deferent spec in oil, same year motor ... only deference is the start stop which I shut off anyway. I am thinking you can run 5w30 with no issues and it will probably be better for the rockers. I mean 0w20 did not protect my rockers even at 18k miles. I had some ultra platinum 5w20 and 5w30 in the garage so I just mixed it since that is what I had, the motor is way quite now.

Have a 2014 Ram 1500 and going through the pentastar tick nightmare . Long story short three garages and one of those recommended by American auto shield . They have denied each garage saying the vehicle has a problem . So no repair . . This vehicle is used for our income and going on four months without it . After paying for the rear down at a Dodge dealer who has identified the problem and the warrantee company wanting further tear down at my expense . I have all receipts on oil changes etc . I am a ASE certified mechanic and am now disabled and fired into retirement and having to make this repair myself out of pocket . . . OK , now to the subject of oil in the 3.6 Pentastar v6 . I use Castrol full synthetic and have always used Castrol products for years . Worked on and operated snow mobiles years ago and if Castrol wasn't used as a rule the warranty would be denied . Jaguar auto cars recommends it also . The in my opinion poor design of the Pentastar during all of the afore mentioned the owner manual does NOT recommend the use of synthetic . I read it three times to be sure as I was surprised although I don't know why when a manufacturer would put rollers with needle bearings not afforded positive lube when I've worked on multi cammed vehicles turning over 12000 rpm running solid followers directly on the cams without issue as we're most all V8 engines until a few years ago . Chevy years ago in the DZ302 V8 engines ran needle bearings on the crankshafts with spectacular results . When they failed the failures were spectacular also. Boat outboards run them without issue again oiling differs and load plays a big part in longevity . As a parting shot remember those folks you see pushing the extended auto warranty I spoke of are usually actors bring paid to read a script. At least that is my experience .

But it’s been proven time and time again by hundreds of mechanics and owners that 5w30 is better for the VCT system and the longevity of the engine. Learn to change your oil, buy oil when it is on sale, use lighter weight oil only in winter months, use heavier weight oil only on hot summer months. Always change your oil when your car is over 5000 miles on a oil change. Oil gets acids in it, additives wear out, oil breaks down, moisture accumulates in your oil. Fresh oil is always best. Conventional oil is actually okay if you change every six months and all you do is commute. If you drive hard, are in a place where it is over 90 degrees, run a slightly thicker oil. 😜
Do research and make your own plan.

Oil weight is governed by bearing clearance.
You should pull up the crank bearings p/n's for both of these engines, and see if they are the same.
Highly probable they are, which would then mean the oil weight was chosen by the manufacturer, for different epa requirements for the different vehicle applications.
Which would further mean, having no forced epa requirement, the manufacturer actually preferred the thicker oil be used

One difference might be is that the pentastar has a variable displacement oil pump, and the cams and chain tensioner run on oil pressure. I thought ALL pentastars were 5w-20, but if for some reason they were trying to counter the cam problem in 2011 by going heavier in 2012, that would explain it. Trying to avoid a recall.
Other tips: Penzoil platinum is what they put into it in Trenton. It’s one of the few oils that carry the mopar ms spec so it wont void your warranty. It’s what the dealer puts into it. It’s a full synthetic. And it’s $22.98 for a 5 qt jug at Walmart. Why would anyone use anything else?

My Ram recommended 5W20 but 5W30 ok if 5W20 not available but switch back asap.
Idk I read article before from a trusted engine builder at the time or a trusted auto engineer and his recommendation was to always run the thinnest oil possible as long as proper oil pressure is proper or acceptable at all times,
I run 5W20 Pennzoil ULTRA platinum and in the hottest part of the year here the lowest oil pressure I see is 27 psi in gear , could be 29 i forget. so for me i will stay with that and see how it plays out.
I remember hearing something before about it could be were the vehicle is shipped from factory to be sold , hotter vs colder climate as to why the two different viscosities for the same engine as long as the owners manual is matching recommendation of the 5w30 oil cap vehicle.

I agree that its quite possible someone at a quick lube or even dealership may have mixed up or lost the correct cap and threw on the wrong cap or used one they had laying around. This guy has some good info, but kinda comes off as less than competent, if he wanted to be certain he could check the owners manual or he prob has access to a program like alldata to verify the correct weight oil. It could also be it was a mid year decision by the manufacturer to change the oil recommendation but i doubt it. I run penzoil platinum 5w-20 in my 18 ram since its still under warranty and meets the oil spec. I Think it ms-4395 or somethin, i use a wix filter. Only 22000 miles so far and Im hoping it will last a long time without and valve train issues.

Thicker oil protects better. Is totally fine to use what the manufacturer recommend but they know some of their engines will benefit from thicker oil. Some Toyotas came with the option of 0w-20 or 5w-20. Many ford trucks with cam phaser problems (f 150 5.4l ) could have used a a thicker oil. Is all about gas efficiency and that's why the manufacturer will recommend lower viscosities. 0w-16 will be the new norm or even lower than that.

A lot of engines are having rocker/cam issues nowadays, it seems like after 100 years they all forgot how to build engines right. The rubber and plastic is going to crap as well. I had to replace my windshield washer squirter nozzles after 4 years and my rubber cowl strip along the bottom of the windshield disintegrated. I live in FL where the UV is high, but it's ridiculous that stuff like this fails. My 03 F150 hasn't had any of those issues and it's been parked outside most of its life in AZ, TX and FL.

Thanks for the video, man! You seem to have tons of experience with 3.6 Pentastar engine. So I have a question for you. I have 2014 T&C and it developed loud ticking noise after 40,000 miles and it was serviced under warranty to replace all 12 rocker arms. However, even after this service done, I noticed ticking noise once every revolution but the dealer service manager told me it was normal and they would not do anything about it. So I am still driving the van as is with the ticking noise. Now the van has about 75,000 miles but the ticking noise does not seem to get louder but it kind of worries me that the engine might eventually fail. What should I do about this? Should this be fixed or is it normal like the service manager said? I would appreciate your comment.

  • @RJ-vb7gh
    @RJ-vb7gh 3 года назад

First from a friend that was part of SAE... any oil that has the SAE label meets the minimum requirements your engine needs.... That said better synthetic oils have better additives and can last longer and can exceed the SAE standards. So any SAE oil is good enough when it's new, but premium oil can reduce sludging and last longer.
For example, if you use regular oil and don't change it for 10,000 miles you've most likely sludged up your engine, if you use 20,000 mile oil and change it every 10,000 miles you are probably just fine. Both oils were fit for purpose the day you filled your engine with them, but how fast they degrade depends on the additives in the oil.
And yes... good oil costs more, but new engines aren't cheap either.
Actually, working at a dealership you get a chance to see how certain oils work or don't work, just ask your customers what oil they use and how often they change it and I'm sure you will see a pattern, if there is one to find.

Have seen in some FCA owners manuals [ 2017 3.6L ] statement to the effect of 5w20 recommended but 5w30 acceptable if 5w20 is not available???
When the owners manual makes this reference it translates to me as a hint that 5w30 may actual best.
Probably no changes in bearing clearances in older engines, vvt that force spec of 5w20, just being likely done for CAF reasons.
Maybe on newer engines the tolerances bearings, vvt is much more crucial on weight.
Is the VVT, cam phasers, bearing clearances etc now highly oil weight dependent/crucial on newer 3.6L pentastar's?
    Regards,

I've seen vides saying oil weight is critical now a days for vvt, not sure if that 30w of oil vs 20w of oil when hot will matter. To me I don't think statement is saying or hinting 5w30 is best I think its saying 5w20 is best but 5w30 ok in a jam vs low or dirty oil.
For me I'm going with 5w20 as years ago I had a smoking car and kept pumping up the oil weight to slow smoking well that thick oil eventually totally killed it, quieted it down and slowed smoke but didn't lube all tiny area because of thickness.
Plus I read an article once from a reputable engine builder or some trusted guy that said run the thinnest oil you can get away with to keep proper oil pressure and stuff will last or something like that.
Mobil 1 has a bunch of full blown racing oil, you would think real thick but its 0w20 and other thin formulas as well as a thick formula or two I beleive

Fresh clean oil beats fancy dirty oil. I run 0w20 Costco and change it at 2k- 3k miles. Any amount of carbon or sludge buildup will cause components to fail in a VVT motor and honestly I'm doing oil changes for $19 each with an extraction pump so I don't even get under my ride. Takes 15 minutes tops and the old oil goes into the empty from the last fill so I know I have it all out. That's $1,900 for oil plus filter to 300k miles which is 20 years for the average driver. Around $100 a year and 1.25 hours of time-yearly. Well worth the investment, and it could potentially last to 500k if driven right. What's an engine cost? People wanna get fancy with oil and chance longer drain intervals but what if you have a leaky injector? At 3k miles that oil is probably still ok. At 5k? Doubtful. Buy it cheap and change it often, find a way to make the oil change easier and your engine more reliable. It can be done!!

It could also depend on where the vehicle was originally sold (the north or the South).
The new Toyota Camry's call for 0W16. They say you can use 0w20 in a pinch but you gotta go back to 0w16 at the next oil change interval. I worked at a shop where we serviced rental cars, they would not pay extra for the 0w16 that they called for so they all got 0w20.
Ford 5.4L you have to run 5w20 in these. If you run 5w30 it will mess up the actuators on the Camshafts and that is an expensive fix.
I replaced a 3.6L motor in a Dodge Journey recently or maybe it was the 5.7 Hemi in the earlier body style Charger. Got it all running and the Check Engine light cam on. It was a code for wrong oil viscosity.
So yes, vehicles are getting more sophisticated. The thinner oils, i believe, are for the quest for fuel mileage, but also because the internal tolerances are getting smaller and finer.

Ive seen it first hand. 5w30 will make it quiter. Especially in fiat chrysler engines that tick

Good advise on Manufacturers recommended oil spec. That being said Id like to share some facts here.
That first number in your oil is the cold weight, or winter weight and so many out there seam to think they can second guess factory engineers with the common conception of "I don't live in Alaska..I can use the thicker grade"....WRONG!, the main reason for this spec is for the critical first start up and the oil that drains away from valve guides and other tight arias. They know that a lot of cars sit for days before next start up and that's where
all the wear happens, in those first few minutes.
So for all of you out there that have that new 60k garage queen that sits for days before you use it....this manufactures spec is directed at you..... Its your car/ money but when experience talks smart people listen.
Buy the way, personally I think Pennzoil ultra platinum is one of the best oils going right now, I was an addiment Mobil 1 user until we saw the journal/bearing damage on the engines we were taring down, we switched to Pennzoil and haven't looked back. we beat the hell out of our motors.

I broke my 3.6 in with Royal P 5w20 HPS because I wanted Zink.
I did think it took 5w20 and not 0w20.
So I switched to 0w20 and I do not like it. Its way to thin. Yes I get much better millage but damn you can feel how thin it is.
I really wanna go to 5w30. Also 5w30 because it "dectos" as well. Same as 0w20
