- More news on a monday, featuring some less than interesting updates on a painting project, my complete and final thoughts on the Pentax 17 and a reaction to some of the new Rollei 35 info. Also UFC news that about 2% of my audience cares about so you are welcome!

I have painted exactly one camera but I like painting things. When I painted the camera I sanded the top cover, lens mount surround and bottom plate with 400 grit. Those were the parts I painted. I primed with 3 coats of Duplicolor primer. I wet sanded that with 600 grit. Make sure it has a uniform look when you’re done sanding. Then I cleaned the parts with isopropyl alcohol. After painting with my desired spray paint color I filled in the letters with an Acrylic paint pen. It came out looking pretty good. I let every stage of paint dry for a couple of hours before handling.
I shoot full frame, do I want a new full frame, Yes. Will I buy a Pantax 17, Yes, will I use it, No. It will stay in its box. If I want a new full frame, I need to buy and support Pantax. Simple
If you haven’t shot half frame it may be worth giving it a shot but totally your prerogative, I’m sure they appreciate your investment regardless!
I will stick to my Canon F1 and Nikon F2. At worse case, Pentax does not bring anything else out and i have a mint in box pentax 17 20 years down the track that may be a collectors item. Win win !@RompingBronco
If the 17 is a succes, there must be for models coming! A new medium format would be so cool!

The K1000 is a sleeper. I love mine!
I already have multiple film SLR's, the main ones I use being an OM-1 and Rebel Ti. For me personally, I don't need another SLR. I'm getting a Pentax 17 cuz I think it'll be fun to use in my daily life. I have a kid so having 72 shots and some auto modes and the vertical framing for my family that just views things on their phones will be perfect imo.
That said, obviously other people will have different needs/wants. And judging by the design of the 17, it seems like it won't take much effort to make a full frame autofocus or manual focus version of it.
MZ-3 or MZ-6 with factory brass mirror motor gears are underrated.
I would obviously be happy with a rollie but for that price i could get the black leica ii that haunts my dreams. I think that a lot of wealthier people will get a kick out of it, but its not for everyone.
I had to put light seals in my Spotmatic SP 2 for the price I could pass up the deal for functional camera as I bought it dirt cheap with a number of Takumar lenses and camera filters. The light meter doesn't work but I have Minolta light meter that I use with the camera

Bronco.. What are your thoughts on new film camera production and how it will influence the current cost of film for the consumer?
I have seen the average roll of film increase by around 5 dollars in the past year or so. Do you think new production lines for cameras will increase supply and demand for film and therefore cause price hikes?
Pre-pandemic prices were on average around 10 dollars cheaper. I think new production is a double edged sword.
And then, a full frame is released, and they are expensive - as they always were when mint - and people are gonna complain about the price. Oh, well...
True, people will always find something to complain about (myself included) but if the quality is there and the features/functions people are looking for are there I feel like the price won’t be as much of a factor
@@RompingBronco I hope you're right, but we shall see when the Rollei 35 AF comes out. My guess is that it will be around 850 dollars and people will complain about not being able to change lenses at this price point. Anyways, I'm buying a Pentax 17. I enjoy cameras with some limitations, and half frame will be a fun limitation with sharp lens

I have way too many cameras. I have been pursuing technically feats like sharpness, shallow depth of field, correct focus, using handheld meter, etc. All in medium format. When I want good results in 35mm I use either a Nikon FM2 or a F5. So, I guess I am not the target audience for Pentax efforts. For now.
Pentax knows they can't convince us (film photography nerds) with a 500$ automated piece of plastic. This camera is not for us, it is designed to exploit the hype around film photography that keeps growing in the younger generation. I work in a film lab and i sell cameras, and i see it every day. There is a big gap in the film photography market. When it comes to new cameras, there's almost exclusively disposable cameras, or resusable cameras with fixed aperture and shutter speed. Pentax wants to fill that gap, and they need to do that first if they want to appeal to us (film photography nerds) with a "real" new film camera. They are trying to lead the way in the quest of a "new" market, and kudos to them because it's not easy. They must compete against digital cameras, mobile phones, ai, and of course second hand cheap film cameras... in a time when it's much more expensive to produce a metal gear than an advanced chip. We need more of these bold moves from companies to help secure the uncertain future of film photography. That's my take, sorry for making it so long...
I think the audience might be instax people who want better quality. The audience is NOT hipsters who buy everything second hand.
That very well could be true but I still think a Canon Demi for 40-100 bucks is a lot better quality with more functionality and if you really want to be a first owner the H35 is a “new” camera for a lot less. I also may be way too entrenched in the second hand market so I appreciate your comment!
Yah, I actually agree with you about the kodak h35 being more suitable for new film users.
