I just received mine this morning. I shoot mainly medium format, and some large format. The reason I bought the 17 was because I wanted a small, light, easy to use "everyday" camera and/or a second camera to stuff in the gear back with the bigger gear. First impressions of the little 17 are quite good. The knobs/buttons feel nice, the metal top/bottom plate feels nice. Obviously the middle is plastic - but it feels like quality plastic. I am pretty happy with it so far, nothing obvious sticks out as an issue. The middle plastic part looks prime to wrap in leather - so I ordered some. I am going to attempt to blast through all 72 frames today, so I can develop film tonight or tomorrow and see how the pics turn out. It is a real shame all the silly criticisms of this camera - I get it isn't the camera some people wanted. However, I feel like it is a very good camera for what it is. I don't find the price out of line either considering the price of quality fixed lens digitals. I am glad it is apparently selling well, as Pentax has said that they have a roadmap for future film cameras depending on how this one goes.
I have the same thoughts as well, haven't picked one up yet, but I feel it's well priced. From the examples I've seen across RUclips, the scanned images look great! I'm sure if you're dedicated to print then maybe it's not a good choice, but as an everyday carry camera, it looks to be a good choice. hope those rolls turn out well.
thinking about getting it for same reason. light, cheap to shoot, but still quality. Initially i was against it but zone focus is actually challenging and a little fun (i have a rollei).
Been a long time time subscriber of the channel and as someone who also finds myself watching these day to day vlog style videos of people's whose work I like, I appreciate seeing people's personalities. Also a great reminder to place an order for a copy of Surveyor. It's a classic win-win-win scenario.
I got the Pentax 17 because I wanted a HF camera anyway. Anyone who wanted a full frame or autofocus camera has options. Even a new one now with the Rollei 35AF. For me the Pentax 17 makes so much sense both for total beginners and people like me who just want something small, light, and quiet that still good enough for some nicer film stocks.
I want a Mamiya 8, a Fuji TX-4 (not that TX-3 digital body concept), If this Pentax 17 is what we need to get there in 5/10 years, I'm happy for it! Love the format, I hope you get to enjoy doing the vlogging because for us it's entertaining. Please just don't feel any pressure to upload constantly. Far too many creators start to burn out to appease the algorithm. You do you, it's been a hella ride following watching your videos!
I received mine today. It's better than expected. People should get their hand on it and shoot with it before criticizing it. I wouldn't want it to be heavier than it is. It's nice to cary in my jacket all the time. A lot of foldout camera's even the 100 year old medium format field camera's use zone focusing. It's something you get fast used to. Everybody has their preferences, but to flat out refuse/reject to learn it, I see that more as a lack of skill or willingness to learn and adapt. Pentax needs the new experience and funds to build upon for the next full frame/medium format camera's. If they didn't go this route, they would have to price it like a Leica and you would've had to wait 5 years to get it. Nobody would buy that, and the whole new analog camera project would fail. Have patience, they are probably already working on a full frame camera, although don't be shocked if they price it around the price of their high end full frame digital camera.
Love this vlog style. The fisheye is great because it’s a different look opposed to the standard we see across this platform. Visually brings more character to you and what you’re doing.
Love the sit and yarn vibe Matt. Keep up the awesome work, and careful on that skateboard! I'm in a similar stage of life and been hitting the skate park on my BMX with my two boys. Good fun, but my self preservation instinct is stronger than when I was teenager doing the same thing!
I really like that format! Keep producing it. And I completely agree whit your opinion on P17. And I suggest to every company out there to copy the marketing campaign that pentax as used because it’s brilliant!
After watching many reviews of the Pentax 17 by RUclips photographers The most negative comments of the camera by far came from photographers who didn't get one to try out. Coincidence or sour grapes?
2025 will be the year of the vlog. I’ve been loving making them lately, and I’ve noticed others have as well. So hopefully by the new year, it’s a regular thing again and we can make short form content a thing of the past.
I have the Olympus Pen S half frame and love it. This seems to be a great camera, but at this price point I think I'd prefer to buy the Olympus Pen F series SLR with all 3 lenses. I'd still be paying less than the cost of this camera. I watched your review years ago and fell in love with the Pen F partly due to your review. You always do great videos. I thought you did one on a medium format (Yashica 124? or similar model), but I can't find it 🤔
Sure, nice video Matt. I sometimes wonder at how people connect through RUclips videos, and I find it incredible. Sharing personal experiences somehow makes us closer and can start a friendship. As for the Pentax 17, well, I love all cameras, even those that are broken. Yeah, the price here in Italy is 550 euro. I don't think I will be buying it. I have an old Olympus Pen EE3, and I think it is wonderful. I've even printed a few shots in my darkroom. A few 18x24 cm prints on Ilford paper and they look great. So, yeah... Half frame is great too. Happy photography to you Matt, have fun and take care.
I dig this new style. Different vibe to your channel but Jimmy DiResta’s old vlogs jumped around like this. You can do some short bits and then connect them together with comment Q&A or general updates. Maybe that’ll breakup the longer single idea video grind.
Same setup, just getting slightly closer for the half-frame. Though honestly, with a 100mp file, I could easily just shoot two frames at a time and crop each one.
The difficulty with listening to people complain online as a sales metric is that, well, people complain online, it's very often all they do. Pentax built the 17 based on focus grouping young photographers, and I think that's a reasonable approach. A lot of people in the film community seem "angry" that this camera wasn't for them. I look at it this way... spec a realistically manufacturable camera that wouldn't have people shouting "just buy an X for a 3rd of the price off of ebay". I don't think it's possible.
My only thing about this camera is that it would’ve been really dope if you can convert it from half to full frame. The brand has a rich history and wish the brand could’ve picked up from last advanced film camera.
Jeez, that's a LOT of books. Love the VLOG idea; keep it up if you have time/energy/desire/enthusiasm etc I'm so glad the 17 is selling well, half frame is not for me but I'll be watching your for a full frame option around the similar price. I don't need autofocus but I would like traditional manual focus. Too much to ask for the price: probably but maybe in time.
@@mattdayphoto Awesome, Matt. Life has enough pressure already (parenting, finances, what to eat for dinner) so if this format works for you then embrace it. When are you coming to the UK? I have a pint with your name on it. Well to be fair, I order it in your name then drink it when you don't turn up but when you do....;) Oh, and i put each one on your tab so bring a ,lotta money.
As a photographer how shot film trough the darkages i can say the petax 17 is for me. Il love photgrapy and i am a curious. Ik don't think you hear positive peoplo on the socials that much. #my2cent. And the price....... is fine i belong to the people how can afford it. Its about priorities. Between friends with (motor)bikes, boats and hifi i have the cheapest hobby..
I'd rather have a Film SLR WITH the focusing system of the K3 iii in the body of the K1. Along with K1 III. or even a pentax 17 with a K mount and the K3 Iii focusing system. But would not mind it if someone gave me a Pentax 17 for my birthday or Christmas!
Yet another overpriced half frame. I mean come on. Zone focusing, uncoupled viewfinder... The only thing this has going for it over a bloomin holga is the lens and adjustable shutter speed. I honestly feel sorry for so many people that are going to buy one of these and end up really underwhelmed with the results. I guess if you only putting them on IG then fine but I feel for anyone trying to make anything noteworthy with them. Very few people are talking about how labs are going to process these either. I mean yes the film is processed the same as normal but are the labs gearing up for half frame scans at full resolution or are you just going to get a half resolution 35mm scan? I would rather buy a cheap second hand canon 300v (£20) and a 50mm lens (£50) than this bit of tat(and have enough left over for a few years supply of film). If I was in the market for a "New" 35mm camera I would be waiting for the Rollei 35 AF which by all accounts is not going to be much more expensive than the pentax and whole lot better.
I just received mine this morning. I shoot mainly medium format, and some large format. Nice initial thoughts on the camera 🔥 only small half frame I can afford is an Olympus pen 😂
My thoughts are exactly the same, I also got mine today l, and I'm planning to develop the first roll tonight.

Your channel is awesome! Matt's endorsement makes it certified platinum now.
🤝 appreciate you bringing the conversation
Great to see how the Pentax 17 is stirring up so much conversation! It's amazing how gear discussions bring out such diverse opinions and insights.

Fully agreed.
completely agree, I was shocked and disappointed that it wasn't a full frame

I love vlogs style very simple not flashy. Good to see what a day in the life looks like for a famous a YTuber❤
I’m glad you enjoy it! Though I don’t think I’m near famous. Haha.

I don’t know about short form, but let’s make shirt form a thing of the past, am I right? Haha, get rid of it, man.
@@mattdayphoto wow
Love the format, mix it in with what you've already got, can't wait for my book to come in!
Thank you so much! I really hope you enjoy the book. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Will have to rewatch. Got distracted by the power stache.

Feels good. Slow, but good. Haha.
Video was ok. Noticed you had a shirt in the whole time which really took it down a few notches for me.
I forgot the library clip! Hahaha

Really enjoyed this video!
Thanks for the shoutout! Surreal to see my zine onscreen.
Appreciate the zine and the letter along with it. 🤝❤️ means the world!

Hello Matt, is your scanning setup for the Pentax 17 different than 35mm or 120?
Same setup, just getting slightly closer for the half-frame. Though honestly, with a 100mp file, I could easily just shoot two frames at a time and crop each one.
love the format matt, keep em coming
Thank you! Will do!
Great video. I agree with you on the 35mm camera. I believe that if people can pay for the 17 then price on film cannot be a factor.
you wild for that cross dissolve from labels into the stache
Scorsese types of cinema.

Thank you so much! The support here watching these videos means the world already. 🤝
Love the fisheye look!
Thank you! I’m into it as well.
Dig the Pedro Pascal look. Bonus points if you put a Grogu prop puppet somewhere in the background next time.
My only thing about this camera is that it would’ve been really dope if you can convert it from half to full frame. The brand has a rich history and wish the brand could’ve picked up from last advanced film camera.
The Pentax 17 is just the first of (hopefully) many analog models, if this one is successful there will be more!
I keep telling myself not to get my hopes up. Would love to see it though.
Love this format. And fisheye is always cool :) Some day we need to do a game of skate together hehe. I'll be lucky if I land a fs shove...
I’ll be lucky if I land anything BESIDES a frontside shove. Haha. Thanks for watching, dude ❤️
Looking forward to more vlogs
Love the vlog, do you have a way of inventorying your photo books / zines in like an app or something?
Let me hold that Pentax 17 for a second 😊
Ya know, they haven’t asked for it back yet and I’m starting to wonder if they’re going to… DM me. Haha

Pentax should make a new analog Ricoh GR1
I'd rather have a Film SLR WITH the focusing system of the K3 iii in the body of the K1. Along with K1 III. or even a pentax 17 with a K mount and the K3 Iii focusing system. But would not mind it if someone gave me a Pentax 17 for my birthday or Christmas!
If i didn't have my pen F , I'd be all over this camera.
I would pay $750 - $900 for a new GR1. I emailed Ricoh Corporate when word first came out they were working on a new film camera - -.
Forget the tech, let me at those BBQ ribs! Please.... in TMNT Mikey's voice.
