Thank you Nico! I was hoping you would be the first one with it after I saw there was going to be an event in Finland. Time proved us film shooters right. In 2006 when the last film SLR was discontinued, I said "Just like Black and White did not die when color arrived, film photography will not die"
I notice a lot people posting comments that they don't like this camera etc etc, but this camera is not aimed at people ("photo nerds") looking at Nico's channel, but it's trying to attract a new younger generation who only know digital. Time will tell if it does attract them.
Im a millennial, I grew up with my family using film for everything... Obviously, cause that's all we had back then. My mom shoots digital now, but I like the quality that film produces. Just bought this camera as a way to get into film, so I'd say it served the purpose
I don't get all the negative comments by many people. They are claiming it's too expensive & better to buy a used 1970s camera. The thing is Used film cameras are not cheap & are not reliable at all. I can't give explanation for some people who might find it pleasing when their used old film camera brokes (mechanical) or just dies (electronic). Maybe they like self inflected pain 😬. Many of us don't have the knowledge to repair it ourselves when it breaks & cameras with electronics (like the canon Ae1, Nikon f3, Pentax me) need someone skilled to do so. And quite a lot of us are not lucky to have a person/store near our place that still repairs film cameras in this day & age. And how can anyone buy Leica film camera? It cost the same as a car where I'm based. So I'm really happy Pentax has launched this new film camera.
I've had a 50% failure rate with the used compacts I've bought, so I bought this Pentax 17 with the extended warranty too. I just wanted a fun small film camera that won't break on me
I'm super excited by this. Not sure if I'll pre-order but very tempted to buy one at some point. The electric lens moving is just asking for an autofocus version coming later.
Looks like a very versatile camera for us film shooters. Thanks for showing us all the details. I've been having fun with my Kodak H35, now I'll have to save up a little for this one.
Thsnk you for the review. This is the 5th or 6th review I have watched, and you were the first to mention the screw on the battery cover falling out. I am thankful to Ricoh Pentax for the effort. I hope to see more NEW film cameras. I love chrome films. Thank you again.
Just got mine today and was following the steps from this video, I was just wondering if the advancing lever usually hard to advance? I tried to advance the lever but there is resistance to it and I’m unable to advance it at all. I’m pretty new to film cameras and would appreciate if someone could help me out.
This is the smallest of nitpicks possible but it does kind of bother me that the two flathead screws on the front are not lined up. That being said excited to get my hands on one and try it out and loose that battery grip screw myself!
Nice it seems nice. I don't know how consistent it is, looking at it it seems a lot of plastic. Undoubtedly a curious camera, just for its half format. Beyond the new signs of life of Pentax, albeit under the aegis of Ricoh, I would say that for the price, absolutely for amateurs only, and the qualities, when I want to relax with analog, I hold on tightly to my Nikon F5 with all my lens park.... for the rest I have my Z8 and the Z6 as a mule. Thanks for the nice video. Best regards.
i thought it would be, I have a Olympus pen EE3, and I usually get 78 shots a roll, and I try not to overshoot a scene so I can have a good change of creating a decent Diptych .. but I can fly through about 15 - 30 shots on a hike, or if I'm doing something fun with my kids or my friends. it funny cause when shooting digital, a lot of people just spray and pray, and people who shoot film are usually more thoughtful with each shot. with a half frame you can kinda meet in the middle :)
Kinda cool camera altogether, but really, they couldn't be bothered to add a retention ring at the end of the battery door screw to prevent it from coming out? Literally every single camera from the last 60 years I've seen has something like that, I hope that's not representative of the attention to detail they put on the rest of the camera... Edit: just saw that ghost flash position on the mode dial, I guess they indeed didn't put that much care into the overall design or user experience. The lens cap warning is pretty cool though, I'll give them that.
@@NicosPhotographyShow True, that's a weird limitation to set and will probably be confusing to many users. If you have "manual" focus it should work with all the programs.
@@WesleyVerhoevePhotography how did you like the zone focusing in auto mode? ... so far that ZONE FOCUSING, instead of traditional AF is kinda turning me off -- Ive shot with the Olympus xa2 for over 15 years and just sold it and exchanged for the olympus xa so that I could say goodbye to zone focusing ... it creates too many blurry photos.
People be hating on the half frame, but let me tell you: all the younger guys I work with 17-24 all shoot half frame because they need better bang for their buck. The lo-fi aesthetic is what they desire, so if you’re thinking that you don’t like this because the image quality isn’t high enough then ask yourself: am I older than 28?
The only thing I don't like is the shooting modes and no f-stops. It would make it quite hard to judge how much will be in focus, especially if zone focusing. I imagine most people buying this will just use Bokeh mode 😁.
I like the camera very much, but not enthused about zone focusing. Seems rather archaic to have to use a tape measure to estimate the distance to anything you want to photograph. Why couldn't they just install auto or rangefinder focusing?
I don't (yet) understand, why they move the lens electronically everytime while you have to set the focus manually. Seems unnecessary and to be something that'll break and doesn't serve any purpose 🤔
They can still cheap out on an autofocusing system this way while ensuring that focusing in flash modes is mostly correct and the user doesn’t have to worry about focusing then… That means the user can determine the focus in most of the manual modes and the camera just executes what it’s told and in the auto modes it just sets to a pre determined position for hyperfocus so that everything between about about a meter and infinity appears sharp due to the aperture probably beeing stopped down all the way…
I'm not happy with this being half-frame, everything else actually looks reasonable (the price is a bit too high in my regards, I would rather see it at $/€300, so let's see). I keep my fingers crossed that it will do well in the market, as we just *need* new, affordable film cameras!
Don't listen to the rats, they're just haters. They compare a piece of plastic junk like a Lomo, or an Olympus that's been rotting away in some grandpa's attic for 60 years, to a brand new premium compact camera, with a Program mode, a sharp prime lens, an exposure compensation dial, a magnesium alloy top and bottom, a film advance lever and rewind knob. All for only $500. There are no good new digital or film cameras for $500, and none with all the features this one has, in a compact body that fits in your pocket...
Its a new tool with new camera prices, older gear was made in a time there was a huge amount of competition and obviously in great numbers. Gifting us with a great second hand market decades later.
That camera is not for me as i'm not shooting anything smaller than 6x6 but I think it's full of good ideas... It is tailored for a market of young photographers who wants a swag tool to shoot cool pictures to post on social media with #shotonfilm... And I think it is well tought for this target. Sample pictures looks nice and sharps, design is simple and efficient... If it was not the price I would buy one for my kid. Of course it can look pricey but given the potential market I don't think it is...
I don't think it will do well. It cost 549 € here in Germany. And for that price it has way to much cheap plastic. We will see how it sells, but I can't image it to be a hit. EDIT: Okay, turns out it looks like plastic, but the body is actually not plastic according to Chris from Peta Pixel. Still too expensive IMO.
Woooooow, didn't expect that. That's MINT territory and that seems to be a much more sophisticated camera. I would've expected to see 100-120€, looks like a cheap beginners camera (and there's nothing wrong with that but that's no beginner price).
So no specified apertures or shutter speeds huh? That’ll help young people new to film photography understand the basics and establish a solid foundation upon which to learn.. or not.
Sorry, but $500 for “half frame”, and plastic parts trying to look like metal? No thanks. The only hope is that people actually buy this thing, promoting Pentax to do it right with a “full frame” next gen. But for now, no way.
It might get some traction in the young Japanese market. But outside of that, unless they bung a few gen z street photographers a bribe to promote it, it's going to be overlooked. When it comes to things like this, young people want things that were originally targeted towards the people they aspire to be, not things specifically designed for them. It's the 'mom bought your clothes for you' vibe.
This is the ugliest camera of the decade, and the price is plain ridiculous for a half-frame camera. You can buy the most gorgeous half-frame camera of all time, the Olympus Pen F with interchangeable lenses, instead. Also, the focus system and the mode dial are a joke

The Rabbit R1 already degraded to a background prop.
Worst purchase ever. Lol

Not many people use film anymore - that is so cool
Not many, but its grown in audience these past years and the lack of new gear is an opportunity.

Nice but sample photos?
When I published I had just finished my first rolls. Will do some “review” soon.
72 exposures is a lot to burn through
Or 48 on a 24 exposure roll

It can be a pain. I've tried 24 exposure rolls, but the choice is more limited. One day I'll bite the bullet and go over to bulk rolling short rolls.
Is it plastic body and glass lens? Or some die cast metal like the original Bessa R?
Metal top and bottom, as PetaPixel Chris pointed out. The lens material doesn't matter, as long as the optical quality is fine (and it seems to be).
Still on the fence with this one.. 🙂↔️

From my use it seems to be the only drawback, that and AUTO only focusing at 1 meter. Like, just make all the focusing modes for all programs.
