There is definitely a line where performance is so bad that it severely hampers one's ability to enjoy the game, and regrettably this game very much crosses it.

@@webbowser8834 I agree it's bad but I also am kinda tired of "but BOTW/TOTK" counterarguments. They are made by a different studio in a different timeline (We got FIVE mainline games + 3 DLC packs between BOTW/TOTK. Gen 8, 9, LGPE, BDSP, Legends Arceus. All except BDSP made in-house) with different tech that is clearly now shared, under different dev studios with different sizes. The only thing they share is a publisher.
It's been 7 years, I think by now we just accept that BOTW was an exception and not the norm given how 95% of other 3d switch games have had optimization issues. Possible =/= feasible, and it's clearly not feasible for most studios to optimize for switch.

The video game sales are just a small part of The Pokemon Company's income. The majority of the money comes from all kinds of merch sales and other income from licensing deals. The games' use to TPC is mainly as a marketing vehicle - if they stopped making them they'd "only" lose about 12 % of their yearly revenue. And it's obvious that they want to tickle every last cent out of Game Freak. The team is very small considering the games' revenue and I doubt that they have much time to spend on optimizations.
As you mentioned, they essentially said "Sorry that the games are this unpolished, but we're not gonna do anything about it."

Lots of people are getting the 5fps and movie long loading times, while others seem to just be getting occasional stutters by some miracle. I seem to be on the better end of it, the DLC only hitched a few times for me without much issues otherwise, but looking at yours and others gameplay it's like we're playing entirely different games. I'd understand this if it was a PC game or something and everyone had different setups, but on a console with basically zero hardware upgrades over its lifespan I feel like there shouldn't be this much variance. @trident042 7 месяцев назад +17

It's also worth remembering that this has been debunked, and while Iwata did write new optimization for G/S, it wasn't to compress data - in fact, it increased the size of the game - but what it did was allow for faster decompression of the compressed assets. An optimization of a different sort, but don't get the old myth rumor twisted.
In the meantime, we're a long ways from that time, Iwata's passing didn't change how The Pokemon Company operates, and what we can easily blame them for should not be laid at the feet of the rest of Nintendo. As even Scott says up above, we JUST had Tears of the Kingdom, and by god these are not the same Switch game.
But I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is an innovation year for TPC. Whenever it comes time for there to be another gen, I expect it'll be this level of gameplay but polished to a fine shine, and people will be happier for it. It's always tough in these portions where they're focusing on updating the gameplay; but I promise you, when we get to that time, people will instead be complaining about how "oh it's the same game over and over but a little bit of QOL improvement" - we've had this cycle before.

One thing worth noting: It’s not that Gamefreak “can’t” or “doesn’t know how” to optimize the game to run worth a damn, they could hire as many people as they could ever need to get the game running at an acceptable quality whenever they want, they just don’t have to. Because we all bought their unfinished product for top dollar and then the dlc. And they sold more units than Mario Odyssey, Breath of The Wild, Tears of The Kingdom, Kirby and The Forgotten Land, and many other games that have a fraction of Scarlet and Violet’s problems. And it’s been almost a year since release and they haven’t barely tried fixing the game.

It's even more sad when you realise they DID hire somebody in Gen 2. They wanted to add more Pokemon, but were running out of space, so they got somebody in the industry to optimise the living hell out of it. So much so, that not only were they able to get all the Pokemon they wanted in the game, but also add Kanto back in.

2D games are soooo much easier to program than a 3D game though so you shouldn’t compare the optimization of Pokémon’s oldest games to their modern ones. The rumor had it that installing the game on the SD card vs internal memory is what made the difference, but it seems that got debunked and indeed I've found no difference either way myself. I agree with your opinions here. I also loved Scarlet and Violet’s gameplay, and the stuff the DLC added was fun. I was playing super casually, going through and making a Living Kitakami Dex, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store with Indigo Disk.
With that said, yeah, the performance is inexcusable. I agree that Game Freak doesn’t really know how to optimize. What I really think Game Freak needs (in addition to a good team for optimization) is more time. They could get away with three year development cycles up to the 3DS, but apart from Let’s Go, three years is just not enough time for HD Pokémon games. If anything, they need at least four. I get that the Pokémon brand is big and having to wait longer for new games hurts the bottom line. But for the sake of quality, they need to do one of three things: slow down and allow more development time, allow other studios to make mainline entries (a la remakes or Legends style) while GF gets more time to work on the next gen, or fund more and bigger spin-offs to keep the brand relevant while not demanding new core series content every year. Ultimately, I think it comes down to time.
My final opinion, though: I don’t think the comparison with Tears of the Kingdom is very fair. TotK was built on the same amazingly optimized engine as BotW, and both had 6 years of development time each. I get the point of the comparison, but still…

The problem with the optimization is that the game is too far done to simply "fix". They would most likely need a team to rewrite how the game loads things from the ground up, thoroughly test it to make sure it works properly, and make sure these changes to the game's most fundamental level of code don't break anything farther down the list. And that's all for a game that's been out for almost a full year now.
I don't want Game Freak to leave the series, since it kinda needs their creative spark to stay good (coughBDSP), but it's clear that their vision for the games is a poor fit for both their dev capabilities and their release schedule. Best case scenario, they collaborate with another studio that's more familiar with making the open-world gameplay they seem to want to go for.

Performance aside, The Teal Mask honestly exceeded my expectations a little. Compared to the Isle of Armor, it had a lot more going for it as a Part 1 DLC. My only complaint (again, excluding performance) is that I really wish you could just jump into a random Ogre Oustin' lobby with strangers without a link code. That would make it a pretty fun alternative way to get Herba Mystica if you ever get sick of grinding raids. Also, I'm really glad they're keeping strong with the character writing! I genuinely think Scarlet and Violet have the best characters (or at least the best rivals) of any main series game. At the very least they're on par with Black and White. Really refreshing after the previous 2 new-gen games basically had the same rival except the second one got sad. I like Hau and Hop but I can't deny they were kinda flat...

But the performance and visual bugs totally destroyed the game for me. Also didn't help that the region just didn't feel Spanish at all imo. I hope they take their time for Gen X, but I doubt it

"We got a remix of Eterna forest!"
Ya.... ya mean the same remix that plays in Legends Arceus? I distinctly remember hearing that music in Legends Arceus in the forested area around Klevor's arena.

Seeing the issues of lag and bugs I honestly must of been lucky because I didn't have the long load in's or the laggy sections happen to me, the loading the environment and stuff pop in when a cutscene happened yeah I had that but Jesus seeing how bad people had it makes me feel bad for them, granted outside of the story (which honestly at this point it's only worth the DLC for that and the pokemon themselves) i would honestly compare this to the first half of the Sword and Shield DLC: The Isle of Armour not a lot to do but there was loads of space with...barely anything in it.
I'd give it 6.5 out of 10 only because of the story and characters alone.

It is worth $0. Nobody should be paying extra to makes these games the definitive version of themselves. Ya know, you sell me something unfinished at full price, I expect the rest to come later at no charge. It happened last gen, and now it's happening again, but worse because it's $5 more AND it makes the performance run worse. It stuns me that people defend this. Are they going to have to add pronouns into the game to finally make a Pokémon game's profits buckle? This is the dumb timeline we live in.

I was hoping to have an outing with the gang of friends we made in Paldea Nemona, Arven and Penny just hanging out and getting into little adventures as a breather after the main story.

It happens, when cyberpunk released I could play the game on a normal PS4 without running into much problems that would let it be unplayable for other people. As you said, It doesn't mean that not happens, that game was utterly broken, but some times you're in luck. Not that S/V was broken as cyberpunk too, the problems I have with this game are more in the stylistic choice they gone with.

Honestly i had the same thing with me, i never had extreme frame drops but the load ins and random parts cutting out and loading back in (mostly in a cutscene) were the most i experienced which was the same for the base game, i feel bad for sure but...i don't get why i never got the same issues as others did.

For what it's worth, we also finally got a fix to the outbreak system, it's now possible to get outbreaks of alternate forms of Pokémon with multiple forms (Before it would always pick a "default" form regardless of the form the in game map shows)

Another fix they did was they fixed the loading speed of the Pokédex. Before this if you scrolled through really fast, the proper pages wouldn’t load right unless you stopped scrolling. Now when you scroll it keeps up and loads the proper pages correctly.

I wouldn’t say it’s impossible for a performance patch though I would think it would come with the last DLC. I agree with your thoughts that in terms of Pokémon games this is one of the better ones when not considering the awful performance issues.

i playd the DLC on day one and i never had any of these issues with lag or frame drops. i did run into a funny glitch that i walked just a BIT to close to a rock and got stuck in a walking animation until it shot me out down the road. wish i had it recorded. so watching this si so different than what i experienced is kind of crazy to see.

Qustion what switch do you play on? The original, or the OLED. I'm running on the OLED, and I felt like the DLC area was a little smoother frame rate wise than base game locations. Helps that it is a smaller area and by no means that the frame rate is acceptable either way, but I felt like the DLC ran a tad better.
