i remember being disappointed and i think it had a lot to do with the marketing surrounding the film and the hype surrounding Shamalayn following The Sixth Sense
It was criminally mis-marketed. Only those who went into it blind loved it. If you'd seen ads for it and/or knew it was M.N.Shyam., you were expecting one thing but got another, so most odd those people didn't like it. I freaking love it.

i love this movie. saw it at the theater and thought it was so imaginative. i remember people being salty saying that there’s no way the village could’ve been kept secret, it’s too unbelievable. the rich have a way of making every damn thing happen that they want to happen. never underestimate the power of lots of money. and walker had a LOT of it.
I’m stationed on the USS Benfold and I watch your videos while we’re stuck out at sea and they keep me sane after a long day, thanks and keep doing what you’re doing🫡
There are clues throughout the film to it taking place in modern times. I started questioning it when Ivy was having that conversation with her aunt at her sister's wedding.
I’ve seen it before, but it has been a while. Watching again, I think they should have switched the photos scene with the Kevin finding Ivy. I think it would have been more of a shock if we had seen the car and siren roll up first….and then cut to the photo scene. Unless I missed something in the edit? Like I said, it’s been a while. But what do I know? 🤷♀️ Just a thought. I still think it’s a pretty good movie though.
Ivy, the redhead blind girl, is actor director Ron Howard's daughter. She is an excellent actress. Also, 3 actors in this film were also in M. Knights movie SIGNS
I was wondering the same thing. I’m trying to figure out the 3rd actor without going to IMDB to find it. Trying to exercise my memory (early memory loss issue here) & I’m a movie buff especially M. Night movies. So it’s killing me I can’t figure it out! She was also in another movie of his “Lady in the Water” another Sci-Fi thriller. But I’m gonna have to Google the IMDB now anyways. I gotta know the 3rd actor or I’ll be up all night thinking too hard on it!
100%! I remember people being disappointed and saying stuff like the twist and the monsters not being "real" is stupid but that's because a lot of them went into it thinking it was a horror. Not entirely their fault as I remember all the commercials for it being focused a lot on the monster aspect of it and not much else. So I get it. But I think a lot of people didn't.. pivot their expectations on what type of movie it was when they realized that's not what the movie was going for so they didn't give it much of a chance afterwards. I actually really like this movie, but you definitely shouldn't go into it thinking it's supposed to be a "scary movie".

WHAT A TWEEST! Basically the elders created a community to shield their children and so on from the evils of man (Specifically city people) i believe there's even a scene where they say they paid to have the park a no-fly zone.
Yup, no fly zone and unmapped. Also, if you notice, Kevin's truck says "Walker Nature Preserve" and Ivy's family name is Walker. Her dad's family owned (and still owns) that land and in the flashback, this is all his idea.
Yeah, I think the twist would have worked better without Shyamalan's cameo. It made it too blatant. All we needed was a couple of "Nature Reserve - Keep Out" signs to get the gist.
Trying to shield human nature from human nature. No logic. They must believe in "evil" as an external entity, rather than human nature, like so many still does.
This is my absolute favorite M. Knight movie, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it as well. This movie generated so much hate when it came out, people thought they were going to see a true horror film, every preview of this movie hyped up the horror angle, they even had the horror movie voice narration in the trailer, and people got a slow burner of a film with a mind twist instead of horror. I believe this caused a ripple effect for M. Night's next few films as people were tired of being lured into his movies being one genre only to get a completely different film. This is particularly true with the very next movie he did called Lady in Water, which was a pretty good movie as well.
I'm a big fan of Lady in the Water for the perfomances. There's a bit of self-wank (though admittedly critics were panning M Night for his twists at the time), and the story is bananas, but Paul Giamatti acts his butt off and so does Bryce Howard.

"Sometimes we don't do things we want to do so that others won't know we want to do them." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Charlie McDermott and Shannon Lambert-Ryan. Music Enthusiast Fact: The intricate violin solos in James Newton Howard's score were performed by acclaimed violin prodigy Hilary Hahn. Basic Training Fact: Director M. Night Shyamalan put the entire cast through a 19th century "boot camp" in order for them to get a good feel for the time period. The Rest Of The Story Fact: Joaquin Phoenix made a wooden walking stick for Bryce Dallas Howard during the 19th-century preparation the actors participated in before the film. He engraved "Ivy" on the walking stick. Sound Effect Fact: According to Steve Boeddeker, the MPAA gave the film an "R" rating due to a single sound effect, which was later removed. It was the sound of the knife stabbing Lucius (Joaquin Phoenix). Boeddeker has stated that the scene worked even better without it.

They left modern civilization because of all of the violence and trauma. They didn't understand that human nature makes people do bad things in any environment or era. Cain and Abel?
I dunno. I'd be willing to try it for the right environment. Say, Hobbiton. It's wild that Walker had some land, was an expert in American History, built that "preserve", got people to sign on to playing the part, and had a private security company protect it. All so they could just Try to get back to a simple, good life to pass on to their children and heirs. I often think it's the mega cities that are harming Us and causing the mental, emotional, spiritual, and psychological illness We suffer. It doesn't have to be like they did it in the movie, but if we went back to smaller cities, towns, and villages, I wonder if we'd be happier and saner overall. If We do, I've got dibs on Hobbiton or The Cotswolds
33:25 M Whistle: "Oh we get to se what's in the box? What's in the box?" Never have anyone been so keen but also reluctant to know what's in a box since detective David Mills in Se7en (1995).
I saw this movie with a friend from work who was gay. He thought Noah was a scorned lover, and stabbed Lucious out of spite as he was in love with Lucious. I viewed this through my hetero eyes, and saw Noah disposing of a rival. Noah followed Ivy everywhere. It was clear who he was infatuated with
[Edited for clarity] It's clear Noah had a thing for Ivy. I have gay friends like that. They see everything through the filter of Gay. Everything and everyone is either gay or secretly gay or is gay curious. It used to be annoying, but over time, it got to be funny. After a while, I just started laughing about it and moved on. What I wasn't sure about was Noah's intention in charging Ivy. Was he trying to kill her, too? Or was his intention to hurt her, then pretend to rescue her so she'd love him? What was the plan? His character was really interesting because yes, he was mentally slow and all that. But that Never means he doesn't understand love, desire, and passion. He also well understood how to fake his understanding of things to get away with the things he wanted to do. Noah was sly and sly people are dangerous people to underestimate
@@LA_HA Noah was definitely sly. He might have been the scorned one, and wanted to get "revenge" on Ivy. Noah was like a malicious child who wanted to lash out for not getting his way. It is clear Noah was more aware than most in the village. When everyone was at table eating, at the beginning of the movie, and the creature sound was heard, Noah was laughing seemingly like an idiot, but I think he knew the creatures were a hoax. Also, when we see him hiding in the closet, his fingers are in a claw shape. I think the Elders let their guard down around Noah, thinking he would not understand if he saw Elders suiting up. He clearly did. Even a preschooler could have connected those dots.
Now that I have seen this as an adult, it reminds me of modern-day Amish country. We just drove through it in Lancater, PA. Horse and carriages, farm raised vegetables and meats
I loved Bryce Dallas Howard in _Terminator Salvation,_ the _Jurassic World_ trilogy, and her _Twilight_ movies. I'd have never thought of that either, Jay.
thats funny you said Noah was just being silly hiding in the closet like that.. I remember when I first saw this I was extremely creeped out by his facial expression and delight in taking advantage of her blindness. also was like 13 at the time so just the thought of a fully grown, mentally unstable adult roaming around town was quite unsettling
This is far and away my favorite of his films. I think a lot of people have said that in here, & that is criminally underrated. I think it asks a very interesting question about society, which is, is it okay to lie to people to keep them safe. And I love that it has two twists. I love that it makes us think about things we normally wouldn't. And that for that reason I like it a lot more than the Sixth Sense and Signs. I thought there was a lot more substance to it in the long run. Glad you enjoyed it! As to something you said at one point in the film, I think I remember reading something about how when they were doing the casting and running the people in the cast through a sort of 19th century boot camp so they would know how to do some of the tasks and behave in this environment, they were talking about whether they should have a couple people of color in the village, if only because technically they weren't from the time period in question, and therefore they would probably have people of color in the grief group they were in... unless it was somehow segregated by the part of town they were in, because it was obviously the seventies or early 80s when they bailed, but then they decided not to have people of color in the cast partially because they thought it might break the illusion based on the time period it was supposed to be set in for most of the film. I go back and forth in my head about whether that was the right choice.
This movie has the best twist rivaled only by The Six Sense. It got unfairly maligned back during its release and all the subsequent years following. But to truly fool an audience this huge is impressive because nobody saw this one coming and it was right there the whole time. Sixth Sense twist was impressive and all-timer, but The Village had the harder task because by this time, everybody and his cat knew what an M.Night Shamalan movie was and anybody who was anyone was going in looking for the twist. To be able to fool THAT kind of crowd going in under that amount of pressure and pull the wool over everybody's eyes while pulling the same kind of trick off twice, but with a thousand times more scrutiny, woo-weee, sorry, but you are a master craftsman at this point. Hats off to M.Night and all the flowers.
So glad to see you enjoyed this! It gets a lot of hate, partly because of the original marketing campaign and partly because if you think too hard about the premise there are so many plotholes BUT, if you're willing to suspend disbelief for a while, it's a beautiful and unsettling story. Hands down my favourite proposal scene of any movie, ever. The soundtrack is phenomenal, the acting is marvellous and the cinematography at some points takes my breath away. [Also, you may not have realised but Ivy's mother and father are still married - hence him not indulging in an affair with Lucius' mother despite his feelings.]
It's the 1890s in the clip. Judging by their clothing, isn't that the era they're living in? Or are you talking about another tombstone in the movie but not in this reaction?
It was marketed as a horror film and people got mad when they didn't get something like Friday the 13th or Saw out of it. They couldn't see the beauty that the film was....only that it "wasn't scary".
A lot of the reason was because of the twist ending. When you think a little deeper, they basically sacrificed their special needs son. That in and of itself is gross.
@@kaygee2121He was special needs, and shouldn’t have been living in that environment. He needed a therapist, and services. I have a child with Autism, so it’s triggering to show a person with special needs to be made the villain. It was the parents fault to subject him to living that way.
I love this movie it's so well done using very little. M night is one of my fav directors, I've been waiting for someone to do a decent reaction to this
Underrated movie! It's just fun and the acting was spot on for what it is, which is M. Night's brand of high budget schlock with one of his best twists outside of Sixth Sense.
Omg one of my favorite movies! And your reactions were hilarious 💀 loved seeing the twists with ya! You gotta watch another M. Night! Please watch The Visit! 😁
I have watched several people react to this movie (it's one of my favorites!), and there is something that occurred to me the first time I saw it, that no one has mentioned in a reaction yet... Ivy was the perfect person to "send to the towns" because since she was blind she would never see what was actually out there.
The question of why they would want that life is essentially because people are cruel and if you can only be surrounded by trusted loved ones, you'll never feel the cruelty of the world. I was homeless for 5 years and the day I became housed I became a target of a cyberbullying group , I have severe mental health issues and my own family is part of the group trying to hurt me mentally. I know exactly how it feels to want to lock away forever with one or two people I know won't hurt me. The real problem is with people you never know, people change, usually for the worse
I’m only 12 minutes into this reaction and you CRACK ME UP! 😂😂 I knew this was going to be good when I looked at be movie you’d be reacting to. Much love from Ohio. ❤

Love the shirt! 😘
This movie got so much hate back in the day, but honestly we love it so much
🤣🤣🤣...
I was waiting for the reveal.. got ya !...lol...
Poor J would never go into the woods 😁..stuck there forever...no toilet paper..no hot water...
🌿🌿🌿
Love your humor, you made me laugh.
"the only thing I know about this movie, is that it's directed by M. Knight -" *cut*
The reveal was Great! I loved it. And when you said, "I peed a little," that was hilarious!
Such an underrated film
28:30 well i mean... Rabbits, bugs, wolves, bears, coyotes, lizards...
Very underappreciated film. The premise is brilliant.
A few performances fail to keep you sucked in, but the twist is top flight and a great payoff.
At the end when J was listing things they didn't have, I was just waiting for it to sink in they didn't have toilet paper. 😂
Maybe they made some. It wouldn't be difficult.
"Sometimes we don't do things we want to do so that others won't know we want to do them."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Charlie McDermott and Shannon Lambert-Ryan.
I want to see the new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) movie today, so I might miss the premiere. If I don't make it, have a great time!
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
This movie was filmed right by where I live, Chadds ford PA. I saw weaver in Walmart lol.
This film gets a lot of heat, but I love it. Very underrated. Great score, too!
They left modern civilization because of all of the violence and trauma. They didn't understand that human nature makes people do bad things in any environment or era. Cain and Abel?
@@prettypinkpopsicle exactly. Crime and murder even did happen in Amish communities. You can't escape humanity's nature while being a human yourself.
@@prettypinkpopsicle they still got it right, less people, less violence 🤷🏻♀️
@@missmandy2049 Not that simple.
@@LA_HA I couldn't agree with you more!
33:25 M Whistle: "Oh we get to se what's in the box? What's in the box?"
Never have anyone been so keen but also reluctant to know what's in a box since detective David Mills in Se7en (1995).
7:35 that's Mad Eye Moody
I loved Bryce Dallas Howard in _Terminator Salvation,_ the _Jurassic World_ trilogy, and her _Twilight_ movies.
I'd have never thought of that either, Jay.
4:47 synced perfectly with you laughing and her crying, fantastic. Did you catch the name on the Jeep?
Great reaction to one of my favorites!!❤
thats funny you said Noah was just being silly hiding in the closet like that..
After sixth sense I think this is M. Nights best!! Just my opinion, very underrated
The lead actress is the daughter of Ron Howard, who played Opie on The Andy Griffith Show and Richie Cunningham on Happy Days!
Bro. One of the best twists of all time. The Murder Whistle did not disappoint om the reaction
The funny thing is, they tell you at the start of the movie what year it is on the tombstone. I never caught it first time watching either.
It's the 1890s in the clip.
Judging by their clothing, isn't that the era they're living in?
Or are you talking about another tombstone in the movie but not in this reaction?
Living like “Winnie the Pooh” 😂
I always loved this one. Never understood why others didn't.
@@October_JennJenn Noah did that on his own accord though
Everyone was still passed off at Joaquim for being such a hateable character in Gladiator I bet
M night is one of my fav directors, I've been waiting for someone to do a decent reaction to this
Thanks!
I am obsessed with this movie’s soundtrack
I really enjoy this movie, I’m glad you had a good time with it. Also dope shirt lol 😉
I will never forget seeing this when it came out. My GF at the time guessed this in like the first 5 minuets. I was so pissed. lol
M. Night, going from Sixth Sense to directing a movie about killer pollen.
JL was in classic form tonight lmao! "Goblins out there" 😂
Underrated movie!
Not winnie the poo in the hundred acre woods 🤣🤣
There is beauty in simplicity
Noah was played by Adrien Brody. I saw this, then I watched him in "The Pianist." It's World War II. A stunning performance.
I’m only 12 minutes into this reaction and you CRACK ME UP! 😂😂 I knew this was going to be good when I looked at be movie you’d be reacting to. Much love from Ohio. ❤
The red haired dude is Madeye Moody from HP.
In my opinion, this is Shyamalon’s best film to date.
