Major Oil Loss!!! The GM Valve Cover Swap That Could Save Your 5.3 LS Engine / Motor How To Tutorial

  • My 2006 GMC Envoy Denali was burning through a quart of oil for every tank of gas. Something had to be done, and a quick search landed me at the valve cover. GM designed them wrong, causing oil loss and lifter failures on many of their trucks and SUV's. This swap takes 15-30 minutes, and costs less than the oil you would burn.
    This really works!!! I quit burning oil once the swap was completed. Unfortunately, I was sideswiped a couple months later. Follow me to see what I've replaced it with. A jaguar X-Type Sportwagon!!!

    2010 Chevy Avalanche 5.3 owner here. My valve covers have never been replaced and apparently are the older ones you have replaced and reported problems with. I have never had any oil consumption until just recently, 153k on the odometer. Saw about a quart missing after 1.5k miles after oil change, i did have to replace the oil pressure sensor and filter so I wonder if that has anything to do with consumption either. Anyways worth mentioning my “newer” GM also came with older VC’s.

    7:54 so how much has the oil consumption improved from the 1 quart per each gas fill up? I need to change my pcv since I burn 1 quart every 700 miles.

    Did a 280K mi. VC gasket job recently. They were the originals lmao. The engine certainly burns a certain amount of oil due to hi mileage, but the main oil loss issue has always been leakage -- not any more. Oil consumption has been very negligible since forever. My guess is your oil consuption through the pcv system is because there is apparently no valve in the positive crankcase vent. Mine has a valve & no problems.

      It starte with the 07.5. They they never made any attempt to fix the oil consumption problem. GM actually said the oil consumption was normal in order to not warranty anything. The sad part is that GM continued to build their AFM system the same way for years! They must pay their engineers to sit on their ass and not fix their issues!

    I have the 5.3 L but I'm going use the old covers and drill out as suggested by many mechanics and several RUclips videos. About 13 holes in total on the underside baffle and and driil out the PCV hole larger. About 1/4 hole.
    Also one guy is advising a full court of ATF in engine.
    My 5.3L suburban started using a lot of oil suddenly when I started driving it more in the winter and idling a lot.
    I'm using synthetic oil now the last three changes.

  • @209Stretch
    @209Stretch Год назад +11

    I’ve done this upgraded valve cover in my 2006 Silverado with the 5.3 vortec years ago and it changed absolutely nothing. The oil consumption was still as before. What the real culprit is, is that there is but one tiny oil drain hole which if I remember correct is after the Pcv valve which makes absolutely no sense as the oil has already been sucked into the intake by then. You need to drill about four extra small holes on the baffle about an inch apart or so. then clean the crap out of it with brake cleaner and an air compressor. I did this on mine and the oil consumption has been next to zero.
    Here’s a link to the RUclips video I followed

    • @sawyerbennett8227
      @sawyerbennett8227 Год назад

      It's really not a pcv. A pcv is like a check valve. On this engine it's clear through both ways. No valve inside. Hope that answers your question
