I Reinvented My Old Ballista Using Suspension Power for Realism! - Trailmakers Gameplay

- Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am building another ballista creation inspired by a recent video I did where I made a suspension catapult (link below). My old ballista used pistons to launch the projectile, which kinda worked, but wasn't very realistic to how actual ballistas work. So using this suspension-based method, I wanted to create a much more realistic method of launching the projectile!

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Omg, the satisfaction at the end when he gets it under control; those smooth, accurate shots feel sooo good.
Its not calm, its bliss
I don't know how long ago this was posted or how long ago you commented this but I absolutely agree I just watched the video of the catapult and then I clicked on this one I would be out of my chair moving my fish extremely fast punching myself in the chest just to calm the f*** down if this worked and I'd be doing that if I had trailmakers on any of my mobile or console devices anyway or handheld I have many electronics
2 questions:
-can you make it hit itself by driving under a falling arrow(with thrusters for example)
-can you build a ballista or some sort of launcher that launches a supersonic projectile?

6:20 scrapman: talking about the creation
Creation: I don’t wanna be a ballista i wanna be a beyblade
Great result!(And Incredible journey) Now it's kinda a bow with a rubber string, and the previous design was more like a one wing of a bow or crossbow, but that's irrelevant, the thing is awesome!
Hey! I just had a vid idea. What if you use this ballista to take out planes/drones? Ok so what you would do is create a glider plane with a bomb on it, then use the ballista to attempt to shoot the plane down? But the plane is like a decent distance away. If you snipe the plane/drone with the bolt then you get a point. You would do this 5-10 times. But if the plane reaches you and explodes you loose a point. Then take turns doing this until you have the highest amount of points. And in case of a draw, you can have Target contest to see who can hit the middle. Then the person who hits the middle is declared the winner in that scenario.
Note that IRL a bowstring does not stretch (or at least not very much). The device gets its energy from the bow bending. It would be interesting to see another attempt at this where the suspension is used for the bow instead of the string. However, I don't believe that Trailmakers has a good rope/chain analog, so this might be even more difficult.
Maybe a bunch of zero-strength hinges in sequence approximates a string?
Reverse the suspension on one side. The spin and unevenness will stop.
I noticed that to, right from the start of the build he placed them from starting from one side across to the other, I’m guessing the physics are not symmetrical on the suspension pieces
I'm curious, the " + " piece that connects to the suspension and the quick disconnect piece behind the bolt, could you have not just used another quick disconnect piece attached to that cross and to the pistons to keep the whole things straight on the draw? your final version looks great but it seems like there would be a simpler connection/method of pulling.
Scrapman....
I realized that you are always having trouble selecting all the parts of the same kind
For example,
If you want to select all the pistons in the Structure, You select them manually,
You can do it easier,
By,
Holding control and Double clicking the block,
Eg:,
If you wanna select all the 4X4 Blocks,
You hold Control Key, and double click one of the 4X4 Block,
It'll select all the 4X4 blocks in your structure
It works on my version of Trailmakers.....
interesting

hey scrapman u should change the fronts where the arrow or projectile is going to wedge so that it will not hit the blocks up in front and have a lot more higher positive out come :>

Love ya scrapman, but the arms need to flex for it to be a ballista, I belive the string being elastic makes it a slingshot. I could be wrong but I was hopping to see some proper ballista action. Keep it up!

That satisying ending.
Scrapman, I know you won't see this, but if you do, I've wanted to see you play this game for a looking time. It's called minedustry, I think you'd love it, it would make a GREAT series!
You should do a ballista against 2 very slow selfdestruction tank that try to ram the balista
Add a sticky block that deploys down before you shoot, to lock you in place. The contraption is jerking to the side when you release.
Next episode idea : A Co-op survival with Kan or Kosmo or maybe Moonbo.....
I like it that the problem that was literally the first problem that scrapman sees is the last problem
Thanks for the build idea my guy
He should have put pistons with anchor blocks on them, facing downwards, on both ends of the bow string. That way once he's locked on target, he could literally lock the ballista in place before he pulls back the arrow/bolt.
Multiplayer monday idea- This but teams in a British style firing line. Take turns firing back and forth at targets and eachother.
Since the arrow is guided by it’s back it leaves more room for it to turn, maybe try centering the release point on the arrow
I like how when it spins on 6:23 theres music from nowhere
do a battle with your suspension ballista and your suspension catapult and a castle with an anti air turret with 10 tiny cannons to shoot down the projectiles. longest time in the destructible turret seat wins. Good multiplayer Monday idea.
that balista video was in feburary 2020 ?!? man i feel old now
The best way to improve it is to make a trebuchet as they are the superior seige weapon
Something that people get wrong a *lot*, it's not the string that's elastic, it's the limbs of the bow. It's the wood that stores and releases all that energy, all the string does is get pulled by the bowlimbs and drag the arrow forwards
To make _italics_ turn the stars to underscores and have it include that comma
for bold keep the stars
Now take it up against Kosmo and Kan in Multiplayer Monday. ;)
Hella cool creation!
since you are using the disconnect block anyway, why not just attach to the suspension directly instead of grabbing a physics piece, might help get rid of some of the wonkiness.
This... is the superior superior siege weapon.
The reason your projectile would sometimes break your ballista was because the wing of the projectile was hitting the 1 block gap of the front of the ballista since they were actual blocks and had friction, this caused the projectile to actually hit the blocks and thus hit yourself.
Overpowered over engineered slingshot
Multiplayer Monday Idea: A race without propulsion from any engines but with suspension.
It would be cool if you guys made dart launching machines, and then fired them at a target, in multi player monday
Create a gun, like put all the suspension behind the arrow and compress it instead of pulling and creating this glitched tension. You can also make ballista stationary for more stability.
If possible add more piston on the side too, it can helps with the shorter total pistons, and you can put kind of break in the wheels when aiming so it wont be wiggling too much, and the side piston will help to reduce the probability broken,
and i will buy scrap mechanics, in this month pay, but didnt know when i can invest time to play, since i got 2 games running at same time right now,
and Thanks Scrapman for awesome games thats probably can help with my stupid idea to become reality ^^
6:20 imagine shooting down something with it
Edit: you shot it down
Dang what does that crossbow think gonna be a 360 no scope ace 😂
Nice job scrapman! very good build! keep it up
The ballista is not shooting straigtht because the links you made are round pipe pieces and causing it to rotate unsymettrically, you need to make BLOCK links, so there is no curve for it skew off of. If that makes sense, your double suspension was good! Just change the Links from pipe pieces to block pieces! BOOM NEXT PROBLEM!
Well I wrote this comment too soon, should have finished video, he did exactly that! HAHA
Technically thats a slingshot because the part in tension its the string and not the bow
Yep.
But apparently appropriate terminology doesn't matter and you can make whatever sounds you want and assume everyone understands.
Scrapman, don't get tensed by the tension of the suspension 😀

No engines allowed, You must use Suspension to spin wheels
isn't a trailer hinge better to link the piston part to the bow part than the pipe pieces?

You should try messing around with the suspension settings, f.e. setting damping to 0 and see if it improves things.
