I’m glad they asked for clarification even though I knew what he meant. Gold-plating has a somewhat negative connotation where I am because it’s used as an accusation to corporate or government entities over perceived excess in costs.

I just spent my first week at sea. I treaded my first footsteps on a deck of a sailing yacht. After almost 4 years of watching youtube videos and reading books about sailing, I set the main, held the lines of a genoa and 'solo' tacked the forty footer with an autopilot at the helm (his name being Thomas :D). In notably perfect weather, I learned to trim the sails for a comfortable ride towing a line for swimming along the ship, to wash the toerails in the waves on a close-reach, to give a steady wing on wing without flutter. To set the anchor and tie off the stern to shore. To clean the lines on the deck so that noone would trip. To tie off everything that can, and will, go overboard on deck. For my weary soul, this week brought a glimmer of hope like a far away lighthouse coming up through the waves on the horizon for just a moment. I've experienced peace in my heart after a long time once again. Born in a landlocked country, I snuffed out my own heart. But the sea caught it and steadily pulls it to its depths. Part of the ship, part of the crew. My heart belongs to the sea. *Sampson Boat Co* played no small part in my journey towards sailing. One day.. One day I'll buy y'all a round in some port's inn. Fair winds and may Tally Ho's sails be hoisted soon.

Tally Ho is simply becoming an ever more uplifting symphony in wood and the shipwright’s art, she’s going to be utterly stunning when she’s completed and afloat.
What an amazing advertisement for the skills of everyone who’s worked on her and what a fantastic vibe humming away in that shed. The good hearts of all of you shine through in every detail of what you’ve created.
Leo, this has been a long road from the time, way back when, that you were a journeyman boatbuilder around the Fal.
You’re a master of your art now and a credit to your teachers, if anything else were true you’d not have had such a talented group of people gravitate around the project and trust you with their reputations.
I hope that one day you’ll cross the pond heading this way and moor up in Falmouth, Mylor or St Mawes. I’d love to see her and I know so many people around the estuary that have followed your progress would too.
I am absolutely certain that there’s more than a couple of beers waiting for you behind a bar or three.
    Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

I talked my wife into watching a video with me, cast onto the biggest TV in the house. After seeing all the fantastic work and infinate detail efforts she asked, which of these people is the best. I couldn't really answer that question as everyone has their area of expertise. Ship’s boats are hardworking, moved around, set-up, lashed down, and all the other things that happen to a working ship’s boat.
But while they are still being born they are treated right, and that boat of Ray’s the Doris B, is getting the love she deserves.
The idea of a ship’s boat like her being tied down on the mid ships of a gold plater is something for me to enjoy in my head.
The idea that Doris B might be able to be paired with Tally Ho would be amazing. I am sure Ray, and his family have other plans though.
Such a joy to watch crafters of the highest quality at all stages of their journey to Mastery is the reason I love this channel.

I've been watching your videos since the beginning and I have to say that the "Gold Plate" designation that Ray Speck bestowed on your efforts is most assuredly deserved. There are not many these days that are willing to put in the effort to reconstruct anything to the level of perfection that you and your crew have and are doing. I can't wait to see her on the water under sail and heeled over in an offshore breeze. Kudos to you and your crew.
Regarding your crew, when you first started you had a group of what appeared to be ragtag drifters, some with skills, some with marginal skills, some completely green. The one thing they all had in common was the desire to learn and work hard towards developing their skills and, not to be patronizing on my part, to better themselves personally. Not one of your people was just there for the buck which in itself sets them aside from the mainstream. Looking today, what I see is a group who still appear to be a little ragtag around the edges, but in reality have melded together to become a world class team of shipwrights, builders, designers, ships carpenters and a crew of shipmates that could hold their own anywhere in the world. Were my circumstances different, I for one would be proud to be part of that team. Take a bow people, you've bloody well earned it.
One final thing. When it comes to the "Tally Ho Show", unlike so much that one sees today in the visual medium, I look forward to seeing your commercials. The comedic wit and unspoken giggles behind them make me actually want to purchase the goods being offered. I wish to hell Madison avenue would have a look at what you are doing and change some of their offerings to match your efforts instead of puking out the same old commercial tripe for the major networks and their viewers.

Ray's segment was a look at a humble genius' masterwork. I congratulate you on your- I shall not call it good fortune, Leo. I shall call it the just deserts of a long *career* of hard work and dedication to a gold-plated goal. The beer handoff at the end after the most astoundingly sincere, *heartfelt* compliments I have ever seen delivered in my life was the most sure proof of your sincerity and good faith. Wow.

You know that you are watching true craftsmen and women, when they create a truly beautiful end product, that they know is going to be working hard, but still do their absolute best to make it look absolutely awesome. Cannot stipulate enough that what I'm seeing is worthy of any prestigious art gallery as a testament to people's ability to create.

Hi Leo, well, I have just finished the entire vlog series in under 2 weeks as I have found it enthralling. Such an uplifting experience watching people come together to help for little or no reward. Totally engrossing & I have enjoyed watching the different skill sets here. Lovely to see & looking forward to many more episodes, well presented & funny, I hope you are prepared for your open day, you may be busy. Fabulous.

Totally agree, Ray Speck's assessment and endorsement is indeed spot on! Turning something olden, into something golden. Your management of the project is superb. Who would have thunk it all these years ago, that you would not only be a sailor, and a boat builder, but also become a director, a teacher, an editor, Marketing manager, Sales director, purchasing agent, a conductor, and, an incredible content producer. The attention to detail keeps the viewers coming back for more! Thank you and all the team Leo. Well done.

It is a real compliment to the original build of Tally Ho every time you introduce "scrap pieces" of century old hardware and return them to proud features of her deck. Those early tars would feel at home trimming her sails and racing against the wind.

Gold plate endorsement, just tells you the standard at which this boat is being built, and we have the luxury of seiing it come together right before our eyes. I can`t wait to see her sailing, but I sure will miss this build, the woodworking is absolutely spot on, each hand built piece, is just a piece of the puzzle that fits flawlessly, the craftmanship is truly remarkable, it`s stunning Leo and crew, love following along on this build.

The detail, craftsmanship and all round aesthetics are really second to none, as Ray quite rightly said, "Gold Class", praise indeed from that individual to all your crew, who I must say have matured (loose term) into an outstanding bunch of individuals and utter craftsmen in their own right!
The one thing I really enjoy is the young guys flourishing under the tutelage of the older ones, relishing this period of learning so much!
Thank you to one and all, been watching since the beginning, and feel an affinity to this as an ex HMS Conway cadet (look up its history) and well versed in old wooden boats!!

My wife who is an artist and my first mate on our sailboat, saw those blocksand she was taken aback by the work put into them.
