Hi Leo. I don't know if you will ever read this as I do realize this video is a few years old, but I am going to write to you, nevertheless. I have been watching quite a few of your videos and I have come to greatly admire you and your abilities. It is very rare to find this level of commitment in someone so young. You have a very rare and natural story telling ability and a sense of humor that is immensely endearing. I am looking forward to that video you do on the day you finally launch Tally Ho.

Leo’s comment about all the support is interesting. I like probably everyone thought it was a big job to take on, but totally underestimated just how big! And clearly so did Leo, even with his experience. Looks to me like it was more an emotional decision rather than a rational one as we are all very good at rationalising to ourselves an emotionally based decision already made!
As he said in the closing of the video he thought he’d be able to manage it ( both financially and practically no doubt ) until he got into it.
I’d suggest his greatest achievement to date, with some good fortune, is turning that potentially bad decision into a good one. Where others would have floundered and failed he’s turned it into a huge success. Well done!

I retire in two months at the age of 68yrs. My Wife and I have travelled through Northern Europe for many years, firstly on an 1100cc Motorbike, learning to travel light, starting off with all the wrong gear, learning as we went. No help from anyone, just us and the road. We did that for 17 years then as the bones got stiffer we transferred to a two seat roadster and followed the same learning process but with a few more creature comforts. Last year while loading up the car again one morning of our tour of the NC500 in the Scottish Highlands, I thought, 'I've done this for so long now it is getting too samey' I need another challenge. So we are selling everything and buying a boat. I sailed as a kid, served two years aboard a merchant ship in my teens and raced power boats as a 30 something married man.
I cant afford a Gin Palace (and would not want one) but as a former construction company owner I can do stuff, so we are setting off on a new adventure. Watching you rebuild Tally Ho is inspirational, I cannot hope to do the quality of workmanship you and your team do but Im looking forward to giving it a bloody good go. Thanks for inspiring so many.

Leo, at 26:00 you explain about how a well-maintained wooden boat will over time lose all of its original wood, yet still be the same boat. I agree with my whole heart. You are speaking to the Royal Ocean Racing Club, founded in 1925. You state that this is the SAME club that was founded to run the initial You and everyone in that room seems to think this is true, BUT not one person who founded that club is still alive, so this is NOT the SAME Royal Ocean Racing Club, which is a ridiculous statement, because it IS the same. So why it is different for a wooden boat? The Exact Same Continuity is there in a wooden boat, and in a club: parts get old and die, and are replaced by new parts, and the same boat or club continues.

Wooden boats and sailing are something that would not have been a part of my life had it not been for you. I am so much enjoying following along with you as you undertake this great adventure. It is the kind of thing I would not even imagined in my own life, but to see you and all those you are encountering along the way is broadening my horizons tremendously. I have now learned that keeping 20 board feet of an old transom and replacing the rest of the boat, qualifies as "restoring" a vessel, not building "new". Reminds me of the old car story of removing radiator cap, replace everything under it. It IS an amazing project and great fun to watch along.. Learning a lot with every video.... But the classy splicing in of high quality graphics, including animations of sailing routes, means that we have the ability to pore over the fantastic images in our own time, which helps compensate for missing out on the undoubted benefits of seeing a person tell their story in the flesh ... so to speak.

Your dream has become so much of a beacon from beyond the mere consumer lifestyle that it forms the living metaphor of a forgotten variant for the nature of human possibilities. Humans and other animals are also examples of this. As in the case of the _(don't mention the ship of Theseus!)_ famous axe of Captain Cook ("two new heads and five new handles") all of our component cells die many times over, if we live to adulthood. Even old scars eventually consist entirely of new cells (unfortunately, mostly they are replaced "like with like"!). So it's not old cells which make us old eventually, it's broken-down repair mechanisms which direct how to replace those cells, and degraded "builder's drawings", which get read wrongly as time goes on ... My poor layman's analogy, for which no-one else is to blame.

I'm so glad you included these two episodes. As a boy I dreamt of doing what you are doing and the background story was as interesting if not more interesting to me than Tally Ho's. When I was a young boy I once tried to volunteer aboard a tall ship that visited Melbourne. I got turned away and I gave up. The difference between you and I is that when I was dreaming, you were doing. What a great story. So humble but justifiably proud of yourself. Well done Leo.

Is it the same boat? Am I the same person I was two years ago? Eating and drinking and breathing and cellular turnover have changed a huge proportion of my atoms, but my DNA sequence and my outward appearance are the same (mostly😊). The importance is the continuity. And you taking the old pieces out by hand, and putting in the new pieces by hand maintain that continuity. It keeps the intangible, the idea of the boat intact. In our current throw away culture, that is rare and worth celebrating. Keep up the good and inspiring work!

You are an incredible inspiration to me but, I think much more importantly, to a new way of engaging the boating zeitgeist. People like yourself have made a difficult and challenging subset of the sailing community... you put it best, Romantic! I feel that much of the collective focus of sailing as a beautiful and in my opinion zen-like undertaking has been Shanghai'ed into faster, sleeker, money no object and therefore hugely exclusive pageant. Men and women like yourself are breathing new life into a nearly lost mindset. The words thank you do not approach the gratitude that I feel but more importantly to a new crew who, with the inestimable community of the internet have done the entire world a service that probably isn't even understood at this point. In one or three hundred years when this craft and the vessels are still a part of society, people like you Leo will not even be around to thank. So thanks mate! Tally Ho.

Congratulations on being able to capture the interest of You Tube viewers. I have always been too boring to be interesting and have anyone give me money and assistance. I hope you will finish your project before I drop dead.

apparently there are about 113 people trolling the internet disliking people’s hard work.. Not sure why? If you doing like the video... just don’t watch it.. or maybe send Leo a private massage and give some constructive advice...
Leo, you’ve done a fantastic job of recording and editing these videos.. takes a lot of hard work, time and dedication.. Keep it up! Cheers!

Excellent Leo. May be you did talk about it off camera, but I see something in Tally Ho restoration that is beyond the happiness that you probably feel restoring her, it is the transmission of your knowledge and that you meet people helping you restoring her which is probably even more greatfull. A big fan of you and your work. Stephane

A project of this nature is one of historical significance.
    Not just of the nauticality.
Learning from history needs touchpoints such as this.
So many learnings are in the lines of Tally-Ho.
We need these touchpoints in so many other disciplines.

I will probably never sail a boat. The research you have done into the history of Tally Ho and attention to detail is so interesting. As someone that is unqualified to comment on boats, ships or sailing in general it's the same boat if the only thing that survives the restoration is the name. Tally Ho the Next Generation!!

Learned a lot by watching your awesome reconstruction with respect to the older sailing vessels.
Some of these techniques hark back to the early boatbuilders, very impressive handiwork indeed.

What a great analogy........people might be thinking messing around with boats is insane (which it is), but how many of us own houses that we are still trying to fix up 20 years after we bought them. Keep going Leo!!

but a really, really great channel so a heartfelt THANKYOU for that.

I had a feeling of being very small at sea, never more the a hundred or so miles off the east coast of the US, but far enough to be out of sight of land. Calm moon lit nights were my favorite times...when not working my ass off hauling cod. 😁
Thanks a million for this look into your life. 👍

Wonderful video of your background and the process you have gone through to get here at the Tally-Ho restoration. You've had an amazing adventure thus far and I hope it continues for many years to come while sailing Tally-Ho when she is ready. Take care and safe travels.
