This build will go down as one of the best documented builds anywhere on any platform. This build series is the gift that keeps on giving.
here here,
Well said
legit. this blows every 'building a log cabin in the woods' video out of the god damn water
Watching this has definitely improved my amateur woodworking!
and a good thing too, log cabins don't belong in the water in the first place@@deccyboi4218
I can't sail... I don't even really like the sea. Never even rowed a boat. I'm not particularly interested in boats or woodwork, yet somehow I have watched every single one of your videos. The craftsmanship on this project is incredible and the level of detail in the videos, not just in the boat building, but in the explanations and the occasional little thing, like syncing of hammer beats to the soundtrack, is so engaging.
Well done, Leo and team. Rebuilding Tally Ho is an enormous task and I'm privileged to watch it!
In exactly the same position, this is the only channel I'm subscribed that has anything to do with sailing and have been subscribed since August 21 and don't think I have missed an upload since been a fantastic journey so far.
Im convinced this channel makes people want to start woodworking, and or sailing
.
AGREE💯
Maybe you like jigsaw puzzles? Think of it as a big 3D wooden puzzle.
You should try it. You might like it.
Now Leo, you’re always making compliments to the crew. But we all need to compliment you by making these curves the way you did! Craftsmanship!
Leo, it does not go unnoticed when you edit clips to the beat of the soundtrack. As a musician and craftsman myself, I appreciate both aspects of your work. Thank you!
@@kerzzy1799 Yes, that might be true for people with no feel for rhythm and not the slightest clue how actual "good" music sounds. With Leo's music choice and his editing however, the overall Sampson-boat-Co-experience wins tremendously. I very seldomly bother at all with music on channels I watch - I have a "Leo's choice" playlist though, to not lose again the good ones he found for me in every friggin episode.
@@manfredschmalbach9023 Any chance of making that playlist publicly available please? I'm not sure where Leo finds his tunes but when I've looked for them before (and if I've actually been able to find them) they're dotted around the internet in a few funny places
Agreed, Leo's choice of music is impeccable. If you want hip-hop or autotune go and listen to some naff local radio show.
I think on some level I always noticed this but couldn’t have pointed it out until you did. Thanks
Agreed!
Every episode is just full of beautiful artistry and pure craftsmanship.
And humour and inspired and inspiring people
In trade for comfort and practicality.
Yes the time, attention and artistry are mind boggling. It’s going to be a mixture of fine carpentry and the sea when it’s all done. This is not what you see in the modern era.
Perfectly said!
So true and valid for the boat and the videos themselves
How spoiled am I that I have come to expect nothing but the best craftsmanship from this crew? Well done, everyone.
Near enough is definitely not good enough!
Cap rails are among the things that are either a lasting source of pride and joy, or an equally lasting nag every time you see them and you will see them a lot, so I just hope they feel good.
Something else I noticed over time.
Pretty much anyone I know who is into boats knows this channel and the quest of the restauration of Tally Ho.
It's going to be a blast sailing this thing, because its reputation has reached just about every boating corner on the planet by now, so Leo will not be a stranger anywhere.
I wonder what that's going to be like.
I love hearing perspectives from sailors. Im a craftsman and these guys are as good as any cabinetmaker I've ever known.
Do we have to say it again? I guess we do:
This is art in the making, every single piece of it.
Well done Leo and the team.
Tally Ho is a "gold-plater" as we all heard recently ....
I must have a split personality. Half of me wants to see Tally Ho in the water and half wants the work to continue. The cap rails along with everything looks amazing as usual. Well done Leo and team.
Hahaha, similar things crossed my mind while watching the video :) when Leo finishes this ship, we will be deprived of this content. yeap I think it's a little selfish thought ever :) I hope when Leo finishes the ship he will go on a world tour with this ship and introduce us to that journey.
Yep, he's gotten better, but he was always good. A craftsperson is often a careful worker in all things------which can be a problem.
❤🧡💛💚
Look at the bright side. With luck, someday Tally Ho will sail somewhere near where each of us live so that we can make a trip to see all that amazing workmanship with our own eyes, walk on her deck and run our hands over the cap rail.
Yeah, I'm starting to dread the completion. This channel is simply the best.
I don't know what I enjoy more... the exquisite work and detail of the build or the shameless huckstering of the sponsor commercials. This crew could either be employed as master craftsmen or as a touring comedy act ready to advertise any product they can get their hands on. Bravo!
Started watching these videos when I was up in the middle of the night with my new born son.
4.5 years later, its Saturday morning and me and the young fella are still watching. Ive got a coffee and he has his cereal. He prefers boat builders instead of cartoons! Hope you can bring Tally Ho to the West coast of Ireland some time so we can come down and have a look. Ádh mór ☘
Still, and without a doubt, the absolute best videos on RUclips. I have watched every episode since day one. As a live-aboard power boat owner who rebuilt a 1976 32' Silverton Motor Yacht, I love watching your meticulous attention to detail not only in your woodcraft but also in your cinematography. You are a great teacher as well. Made me realize just how inferior my skills are! Thanks to you, Leo, and all your dedicated crew. I eagerly await my next virtual visit with you all.
This channel is the only one where I don't even think about skipping the sponsor segments, they're so fun.
Amazing Leo. Most cabinetmakers say that curved work is where money goes to die. I guess shipwrights prefer to live on rice and beans. Amazing work on the caprails!
😂
Reminds me of all that hard work fairing the hull with the "torture boards" in Episodes 97 and 98, with an equally beautiful result.
Patrick’s laugh is a force multiplier for any video😂
@yoyopg123 - Agreed, it really is! He's great!
Tally Ho is looking great, Leo! You all are doing phenomenal work. I know you're no longer in Sequim, but I was wondering how Raul, Darlene, Pancho, and the dogs are doing. We last saw them when you moved into the current boat shed. Hope everyone is doing well. I'm sure they still miss having you, the boat, and your volunteers around.
Bring back Pancho! Bring back Pancho ......
My latest CT scan says no cancer present so I may actually get to see Tally Ho in the water!!!
Congratulations!!!
I literally laughed out loud and woke up my wife and dog when Patrick stepped out of the portajohn. I too never skip the sponsored ads. I am amazed at just how well each scarf joints fit. I know I would screw those up but adding to that, having the morticed holes in the right place and the beautiful curve top side leaves me in awe. I look at this beautiful piece of wood and would cringe to put a chisel to it knowing I would cut too far. All the positive comments are well deserved and I agree with them all. When she is in the water and sailing, I hope you carry us along on your trips and also with all the maintenance that will be required of her to keep her this beautiful.
Well, if someone ever asks why it took so long to make the boat, just show them the cap rail and how the profile was made. Amazing work of art!
This video was one of the best ❤❤ the shoe intermission was hilarious. The videography was wonderful, I loved the atmospheric shots of the surroundings, the driftwood and the moon.
Most of all, the caprail turned out spectacularly beautiful, Leo.
And last but not least, the team is just lovable. Thank you, thank you all for a highlight of my day.
Yes. And with the quality of his ads I bet he's got advertisers lined up (sorry, queued up!) half way around the planet.
Restoration's +2Million USD it should look amazing
The music is always excellent as well.
I can not help thinking that you must have known how many hours this project would require, yet you started anyway! I usually praise the quality of the work, but today, I would like to praise your courage also.
Fair Winds and Following Seas.
Not only a Master Boatbuilder but a damn good videographer and editor.
Seriously, every episode, I think this is less and less of a boat or sailing yacht and more and more of a display of art and superior craftsmanship. The guy last week who made a comment about no expense of time or money could have not been more on point. The abilities and dedication of Leo and the team are uncommon in the world today.
After watching your video I still had half a cup of coffee left, so I watched the video again. Was as good the second time through. Leo thanks for making my Saturday chill days so chill.
It's not difficult, looking at the level of skill required, the attention to detail, and the quality of the materials, to appreciate how, in days gone by, a vessel of this nature was only available to very wealthy individuals. Top marks to Leo for his ingenuity and talent for raising the money, through this medium, to demonstrate that those skills are still alive and well. Albeit that modern power tools obviously speed the process and take out some of the backbreak. It's left to the imagination the sheet amount of muscle which would have been needed. Planing, sawing, chiselling, lifting, sanding, incredible.
Days gone by? A vessel of this nature is *still* only available to very wealthy individuals lol. The only difference is he's getting donations and paid by us through views to build it. It's just a different form of wealth
yeah. Prob this build will cost 1m if you have it done it@@MidwestFarmToys
@@MidwestFarmToys No. Leo is not my idea of a wealthy individual, although Tally Ho when complete will be worth a fair chunk of change. He has never, to the best of my knowledge demonstrated exclusive ownership. Legally I suppose he has every right. He has worked tirelessly, organising, planning, filming, editing, boss and nuresmaid, and met all the challenges and remained a shining example of the values of his country of birth.
@@MidwestFarmToys Leo and the team make a lot of us wealthy.
We have hours of priceless video footage to go back to, at our disposal.
❤👌🏻
@@tomarmstrong1281 nobody is arguing any of that. The fact of the matter is this boat still isn't accessible to anyone who isn't wealthy. He could not have funded this without wealth in some form or another. The materials alone are probably well in excess of 200k
I’m always impressed with the amount of craftsmanship you all possess.. Not only a Master Boatbuilder but a damn good videographer and editor..
Forget all your multi million dollar yachts in the South of France, thanks to your attention to detail, Tally Ho will be the most beautiful craft on the ocean.
A little bit of drama, a little bit of cool jazz, this is one of the best shows in this YT genre! Shipwright Leo is an excellent filmmaker and executive producer.
I was amazed but not surprised to see Leo's effort and precision in making the cap rails. I would be very interested to find out how many hours Leo spent just on the cap rails. Another terrific video!
Me too. Hundred hours for sure
The sheer effort and thought that has gone into these cap rails is astounding. Workmanship of the very highest order.
The “again” in the “Wet socks again” got me good. It just infers that this happens a lot when he goes to the bathroom.
The thing about doing it this way is that it's not just a lot of work up front. Its a commitment to doing the same quality of work later on to match what's already been done. It's gonna be impossible to half-ass a repair on this boat because what's there already is a masterpiece.
I was hoping for a new episode. Now my weekend will be complete.
Those cap rails look amazing! Lovely shape, excellent fit.... Good job. Also, Leo, your editing is amazing! You did a great job at telling an engaging story about tedious process. Keep up the good work. Your skill as a video storyteller is probably one of the most valuable skills to this entire project.
The only channel on RUclips that I hope is having a sponsored episode because these adds are great! 🤣
Leo,
I’ve watched all the ‘Tally Ho’ videos (a binge watch was necessary to get caught up to where I first dropped in). Although I live in New Mexico now, I spent my life from an early age sailing. Something akin to sixty years. I have seen a fair number of boats in that time. Not a single boat that I have observed in my lifetime is able to begin to compete with ‘Tally Ho’ on any level! Most certainly the accolade Gold Plater may be bestowed upon ‘Tally Ho’ with the absolute confidence that it is well deserved. You and your motley crew of perfectionists have created a vessel that should easily pass to your great grandchildren. By ‘Gold Plater’ I am referring to how tasks are performed. Everything is thought out before it is done. If it isn’t quite right it is done over. No corners have been cut. No ‘well, it is good enough’ has been accepted. All the fittings are either period correct or a vast improvement. I would love to sail with you but that won’t work; I cannot walk well and I am subject to bouts of extreme light headedness at the most inoppertune moments. But until my time is up, I shall be extraordinarily happy knowing that there exists a vessel of the highest quality attainable to set against any ship afloat.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
God bless,
Paul
Ah, perfect, I'm on holiday in Northern Ireland feeling really relaxed, now I have the bonus of a Tally Ho video to enjoy. Thanks, you guys are doing a wonderful job. Much love from the UK.
Props to Leo for doing the hardest, most boring work till late at night. An excellent leader.
Never has Ray Speck spoken truer words.
There are no words! I think my mouth fell open at 18:12 with that... MONEY shot! of the bow of the boat... remembering Leo taka chainsaw to the bow and just look at it now! with the carved detail and the cap rails in place - AMAZING! Leo, I know it was a lot of work, but your choice to put the gentle curve to the face of the cap rails was the right one. We all know you don't shy away from hard work, but with a reward like this the choice was obvious.
Watching Leo build a wooden sailing yacht by hand after I struggle to install 2 pre-fab bathroom cabinets. LOL priorities. Much respect Leo & crew
Likewise, I'm pretty chuffed if I can hang a cabinet on the wall and get it level!
Commenters rave about the smell of fresh-cut teak & all - while I live w/ the stench of newly sawn MDF !
Weekend complete.
When Tally Ho is done, it should be in a museum that extols the virtues of how it should be done!
I arrived here on the first episode due to RUclipss algorithms and have stayed ever since. Knowing nothing about boat building I now know all about bulwarks, frames, hanging knees, trunnions and Garboard Strakes. Looking forward to hearing about the big stick thing and the white sheets in future episode. It’s been a long two years.
Wow Leo, Those Cap rails are just stunning. Thank you for listening to yourself and for taking the time and care to construct them so beautifully & artfully -- watching this gave me permission to slow down and choose beauty in what I'm creating, even if the project has taken much longer than expected and is over my budget. It feels like you are making these choices in service of Tally Ho herself (not only your individual preferences), and it feeds the soul to see!
Now that is some totally awesome woodworking & craftsmanship Leo! As a long time woodworker myself, I really appreciate & admire the amazing work that you & the rest of the crew are doing to bring Tally Ho back to life! As a long time supporter of this project, I urge anyone that hasn't done so to consider making a donation. Thanks so much everyone! 👍👍
Patrick is killing it ... thanks for making the ads 100% watchable
I remember when you thought it was a disaster that you might have to move out of your first place where you were building Tally Ho. But it really was a blessing as it turned out.
Damn, never thought I'd say this but I'm enjoying the commercials almost as much as I enjoy watching the incredible craftsman ship being performed in the videos 😄
This project is getting me through my dissertation at the moment haha. All of you are an absolute inspiration to me as its my long held dream to build a little sailboat of my own one day. Greetings from Bristol! Hope to see Tally Ho on the Harbourside at some point.
Maybe when some of the Tally Ho crew open an all rebuilt Underfall Yard to keep producing beautiful boats.
We can dream.
Good luck with the dissertation ☺️
@@bill9540 Thank you! Last week till the deadline😬
Thanks for showing us all the details as well as the nomenclature on building wooden boats. Some of us who've been around for many decades are thankful for the preservation of HOW you build a wooden boat. (mortises, tenons, cap rails, garboards, keel shoe, stontions, scuppers, cap rails, belaying pins, all great terms to show what and how they are made. So where are making the belaying pins?)
He showed us the bobstay being pounded into place on the bow by Zeal, but he didn't tell us what its function is, so I Googled it and found out.
It's Tally Ho Saturday, watch and smile.
I was admiring the extent of the craftsmanship that is going into creating Tally Ho 2.0. She will obviously be better built than the original. It then suddenly dawned on me that Leo’s editing skills have increased over the years. I do not believe there are any creators for YT or professionally made movies that surpass Leo now! He is on par with the best!
Your cap rails are a work of art, as is the whole project. Kudos.
Beauty. From the beauty of the wood grain in the sunlight to the still photos that draw the eye to roam about, we are presented here with some of the beauty all around us. Leo sees it and manifests it onto the daily toil of putting Tally Ho together.
This is the ONLY channel where I actually enjoy watching the sponsor ads.
It's amazing that you can be so accurate with a radial saw. Man oh man.
It’s wonderful to see the community of crafts people that are linking up on RUclips to support this project. Just binged on the lovely fiddle project coming out of this.
Fiddle project? Do share!

WELL worth the effort 👌. When you think of the number of appreciative hands , bottoms and bare feet that are going to enjoy those chunks of wood , it’s time very well spent . 😊
The craftsmanship seen on this boat build is TOP OF THE LINE. Hats off to all of you.
This may be my favorite episode.
The craftsmanship has been amazing through this whole project. But the elegance of these cap rails make all the difference in the world. Just beautiful.
Great job to all these craftsmen.
Wow Leo! Your patience and skill with the cap rail sure paid off. It's beautiful.
Watching your sponsor ads, completely, is something I rarely do elsewhere. Your time making them is well spent and obvious.
I hope they paid a fortune for that Vessi ad spot, that was the best ad anyone has ever made for them, and I have seen hundreds.
Getting closer every day to launching Tally Ho. It's going to be quite a site to see her under full sail going across the Atlantic. I hope Leo stays with utube and keeps all the folks like me who have been here from the start up to date about his travels by putting out u tube videos. Tally Ho is looking wonderful Leo. She has had some very talented craftsmen working on her ,but if it hadn't been for Leo's hard work and his dream of once again sailing Tally Ho the world would not have the privilege of seeing this historic boat. Now that's quite a legacy.
Hello Leo,
It is so very nice to see skilled master craftsmen/craftswomen! Thank you and to all the people working on the boat showing us true master craftspeople are still around...Awesome 👍 👍
Master Shipwright - Leo - that cap rail is another great detail and excellent choice to give it that "organic curve" seems perfectly period to me. The advertisements that you & team approach with brilliant pantomime are such a pleasure compared to other channels where sponsoring ads take a minute or more and are dead serious about a product. This was fun and I still remember the name of the product.
This channel deserves an oscar for advert placement
I love your sponsors! And that they trust you to promote them!
You guys are a sponsor's dream. The effort you put into telling their story is so much fun.
Question (not about the sponsor)... why are the cap rails so low? Why not waist height to give you something to hold onto?
I’ve sailed for years so thought that I’d have an answer … but haven’t 😳. One thought is that, by definition, yachts heel and can take on huge amounts of water in poor weather. Even in our modern boats it’s quite normal to have waves sweep across the deck and on one occasion we were all floating in the cockpit😳😳. I’m just thinking that if you had high cap rails they would trap a large amount of water, making the boat heel more … then more water is trapped, then stability issues. Probably totally wrong in practice but maybe right in principle.
@@moonshine3333 Square rigged sailing vessels used to have hip height cap rails, and they were constantly washed by waves, no problem.
@@andrewseaman7012 Of course they did but by virtue of their size they had huge scuppers too. It was only a thought 😳
*- Leo, I am guessing you showed us old school wisdom of what is the easiest way to do something.*
*- For me, I could feel the energy you would putting into the boat's guard rail, templating both the initial receiving threshold for all that come onto the boat, and starting point for so much that happens with it boat's rigging.*
*- The curve is the boat's crown and the boat's way of controlling the energy of those on the boat.*
The coolest on the present team: Zeal and Bob. No slight toward any others! But Zeal is a natural in front of the camera, does amazing work, and is sublime. George is the youngster of the group and just naturally chill and a gifted woodworker.
Leo's attention to detail is simply staggering. He has grown not only as a boatbuilder and project manager but his videos are also getting progressively more professional. The opening and closing of the door were nice touches.
Another amazing episode with another amazing sponsor video. The Tally Ho team just keeps getting better and better. Thanks for taking us along on the ride!
Yours are the only sponsor segments I'll watch. Humour does it every time.
This was the best advertisement effort yet! I enjoyed it very much and my wife wants to buy some shoes. Hats off to the companies who will sponsor you and let you make these awesome fun filled ads for them. I was laughing my ass off. You folks rock!
Just when I think it couldn't get more hardcore, Leo goes harder. What a treat!
What a great repair! I know how heart breaking such mistakes can be, esp in large expensive hunks of wood
The Mai Tai was one of our neighbors at the Port of Everett. Glad to see that someone is putting some effort into keeping her up. 👍🏼
The rationale for the cap rail profile and process makes lots of sense, especially as it finishes the form of the hull at the top. It deserves a lot of attention, and what you came up with looks gangster as hell.
I have worked with my hands all of my life creating but the skill and craftmanship in each episode always leaves me gobsmacked. I have been watching from the first episode and look forward every week to your videos, it is as if every member of your crew have become a part of my friends. I am almost dreading when you finish and launch as the journey will be over, but then I know another will begin. Thank you for showing me something that I never would have seen otherwise.
Great to hear, from Sydney.
Lovely rail work documented perfectly. Exceptional advertising bit. Not sure if I have seen such a personalized and humorous approach before. I expect that companies would pay a premium for that as your viewers are totally watching every second rather than skipping over it.
Good to see you doing some "proper work" thia week Leo and not just project managing.
I think the curve in that cap rail surpasses the polished brass in the bilge in terms of attention to detail amd effort.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the education and entertainment you provide.
Thanks Vessi. And thanks Patrick, you silly man. And thanks to the whole team! Love getting a look around the shipyard, too. This channel really happyfies me most Sunday mornings. Thanks, folks.
yesss, time for my favorite RUclips video, much love from our family in the Netherlands. we love your videos and the work that you do, as a woodworker myself im jealous of all the stuff you guys do and make. also much love for your wonderful and skillful crew ❤
19:00 _Brilliant_ closing shot. I was on the edge of my seat, wondering "I know you'll go to black as the door shuts, but will you remember to take out the window strip on the top of the door?" You one-upped me! Closed the door and _then_ deleted the window, which performed the actual transition to black. Perfect.☝
And there was me, poor, simple sap, thinking someone has just turned the lights off!
Come for the boat building content, stay for the live action adverts :D
Amazing work. So impressive that you got the round-over profiles to match so flush at the joints!
She's coming along beautifully Leo, you've assembled a great crew of people to build her, and kudos to the people that helped in the beginning over there in Sequim, not to mention you're still cracking us up with the Ad reads! 😄👍 Soon enough you and the Tally-Ho will be on new and exciting adventures navigating the globe, then challenging her, and yourself through the Fastnet Race, 202? really looking forward to that! Cheers!
Very nice work on shaping of the cap-rails by Hand. Work is going well with lots of progress. Love the slapstick acting for the sponsors. Makes it a bit of fun that sticks in the brain. Well Done everyone involved.
And that is why Leo ( and the rest of the TH team) have nearly half a million subs!! Well done all!!!🥇🥇🥇
Pure class!…..nothing to add!
You made an absolutely stunning job of the cap-rail. You were dead on about the curvature, too. The eye just runs off the rail and flows along the lines. Beautiful.
Literally the only channel that I watch the full sponsor advertisements on. 🥰
Best channel bar none, I even enjoy the ads lol. I'm a Brit and sailor that used to have a 21ft Saro Scimitar back in North Wales now living in Colorado (where i moved to be land locked!!) and definitely going to come over for the launch. Ive used so many woodworking skills learnt on this channel in converting my basement, thanks Leo and crew 👍👍👍👍
I like how accurately all the cap rails (and everything else) fit together so tightly and accurately. So satisfying to watch, and must be great to actually be able to do. This is gallery quality artwork. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
