    The Capstan Project is certainly emblematic of the entire Tally Ho project, where Leo and his team plus Keith and his team come together to merge the old and new to create a best-of-breed device for the best-of-breed ship.     Seeing you applying the bedding compound reminded of an artist with his palette. This capstan is a work of art. Practical art but art none the less. You are an artisan. You should sign and date it.
    Wherever Leo takes Tally-Ho this piece of Keith will be right in the front of the ship. Taking it all in.

    It's good that there is so many people involved in completing the capstan but it seems to be taking too long and maybe the reason behind that is so many have their hands on the capstan.

    If you want 6 evenly spaced bolt holes on a radius, once you have scribed the the radius, without changing your compass setting (trammel points), mark a starting point on the radius. Then start marking points on the circle with your compass. You will find that after marking the 6th location on the circle, the 7th point will align perfectly with your starting point.
    Something I learned as a kid playing with a compass waaaaay back in Elementary School back in the 1960's. Thanks for a great video and great project.

      What happens when laying out as you describe makes 6 equilateral triangles about a common point, the vertex, at the center line of the circle.

    The assembly of this piece of equipment is straight millwright work . While I have never assembled a capstan I have drilled and reamed and doweled thousands of holes and locktited millions of bolt and nuts , bedded lots of surfaces usually with bellzona. Having the holes aligned and everything ready is critical. Another great job by a master machinist. God bless you sir

      Machinist. This is machining. If he were running the stress calculations, directing the drawings, signing off on the design, that's engineering.

      ​@derschwartzadder Yeah. While a good machinist has to sometimes think like an engineer, it is a decidedly different discipline. Also, I might go so far as to call Keith here a millwright. Not only is he a professional machinist, but he rebuilds, restores, and performs the maintenance on all the machines.

It’s extremely rare to find a university trained mechanical engineer who’s also a fully trained machinist.

    So cool to see this come together-- but the amount of work to get to this point is so very interesting and I appreciate all of this being shared. When mounted on Tally Ho it'll look cool but like the whole project behind the single deck mounted piece is a story and a person and their story. Awesome.

      except if the drawing is wrong, then the outcome will be wrong. it's better to think about what the desired outcome is and ask questions to make sure the design's intent is actually carried out.

    Hello Keith, Well ! This was an absolutely beautiful example of some of the most wonderful and extremely scary machine work which I will equate to when you’re walking on a freshly frozen pond or lake on your tippy toes and hearing the ice cracking 😳and something starts squeezing your lower “Cheeks” together !
    It’s been said here before in several comments that few if any jobbing shops would have even remotely agreed to take this extremely irreplaceable and important historically Capstan restoration and reconfiguration job on in the first place. So to say you are certainly without any doubt deserving of the respect of everyone out there, yes indeed you do Keith !!!
    Thank you for having the guts and patience and of course the amazing talent for saving the Talky-Ho Capstan. This also goes the UK engineer who designed the power portion of this job which is an amazing feat in itself 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.

    You can design a 6-hole pattern using the same compass you used to make the radius. The distance between the holes is the radius. Every child used to know that.

    I like your big radial arm drill, which is about the same size that I used to drill out the tube and flue holes for the front tube plate a steam loco boiler with around one hundred tubes and twelve flues. I'm sure that Leo will be absolutely thrilled with your excellent workmanship that matches with the quality of the rebuild he has done on his yacht.

    Awesome project for an awesome boat! As a millwright / machinist myself its nice to see things being repaired instead of just being replaced. I was a little disappointed though to see all the hammer marks in that nice new gear ring. A hardwood block would have worked better for install instead of a brass hammer, or the dead blow hammer used after the brass one marked up the gear. Keep up the good work Keith, cheers

    In reference to the location of the six holes using a protector as shown at time 19.46, I would like to suggest an easier way to locate the desired points. I learned this method studying the "French Engineering Drawing" textbook in my drafting class in 1954 (yes, I am 85 years old and still remember a few things). The CAD system back then was a drawing board, T-square, triangle, ruler, pencil, and an eraser (just in case you goofed the first time). First draw a circle on the part using the proper radius. Next locate the desired location of the first position. Then, using the center point of the compass placed on the first position, draw an arc on the circle line. Moving the center of the compass to the new arc, draw another arc on the circle line. Do this four more times and all six positions are located. To double check your work if desired, use the last location as the center point and the arc should be over the starting point.     If you take a pair of dividers and set them to the radius and walk them round the circumference they will be a perfect pattern of 6.

    Keith - a much more precise and elegant way of laying out the 6 holes needed for the gear pins would have been to use the circle trammel you made and starting at your starting point for the first hole, swing the trammel until it intersects the layout circle, which becomes the 1st hole location. Then take the trammel, using the intersection point on the layout circle, swing an arc again to get the 2nd hole location and so forth until you get the 6 hole locations. If done correctly with the same radius as the layout circle, your holes should be exactly spaced evenly and 60 deg apart.

    I suggest that you consider re-doing the 6 bolts as fitted bolts (of a larger diameter too) to carry the shear force betwixt the cap and the chain pulley.

    The radius of the circle is very close to 1/6 of the circumference. A compass set to the radius will step off the 6 points around the circle.

      Yes, that's how I would have laid out the six points. It's not the fact that the radius of a circle is approximately 1/6 of the circumference, it's that the length of each side of a hexagon set out on a circle is exactly the same length as the radius.

    In my youth I worked for Ford on gearing machines for a while and I was often amazed how the tool makers made the dies, I didn't know what sort of skills they needed but it was always nice to see them milling things out for car parts. some 45 years ago. now watching you Keith over the time you have been working on the Tally Ho Capstan I can see what skills you have and the prep work you do before hand this is why i continue to watch your channel I like to see a craftsmen work thanks for taking the time to video and explain what you do Keith.

    Amazing how much work has gone into this single piece of machinery, what with the pattern making and casting of the new cap, and all the meticulous work that Keith has put in in the shop, not to mention the design and fabrication work that has happened in the UK. Did anyone else experience a sense of satisfaction when Keith tapped that bronze gear ring into place within the casting? Just excellent.

    Can’t wait to see it in action. As a former owner of two 100ft schooners, I have always loved how older equipment / machinery can be improved / adapted to fit a modern day context. We used to have man powered capstans / windlasses but then not the number of crew to operate them, so moved to powered items but they looked out of place on a historic vessel. This is going to be great to see in operation.

    That capstan is looking awesome! I just watched the last Tally Ho video where Leo was kinda worried his capstan would fit right and be installed smoothly. He's got nothing to worry about! Outstanding cradftsmanship Keith.
