  • In this episode of my Quest for Great Sailboats, I travel to Merritt Island, Fl where I take you aboard an absolutely beautiful Shannon 38. Come aboard and experience true craftsmanship from a bygone era when Americans knew how to build great sailing yachts.
    This Shannon is for sale. Asking Price is $89.9K but I believe a well advised buyer may acquire her for a good deal less.
    If interested, please contact me at Dale@integrityyachtsales.com

    wow this brings back memories. I met Walter Shultz the founder of Shannon yachts at the boat yard in Bristol Rhode island in 1977. I nearly bought the 38 and boy do i regret it now. Seems like all the boat yards Hinkley, Alden and others are a rare sight and when you do you realise how Beautiful they are and seaworthy you appreciate the craftmanship and time that went into them. Thats why Island packet and Tartans are still around people love the look of them and they are sailing all over the world. Great video

    went to bristol Ri when this co first started and met David walters and walter schultz and went on the 38. I did not buy it but now i wish i did. There are not many boat builder that make boats like this anymore. Morris yachts is a close contender.

    What is the headroom in this boat?

    I love nearly everything about this boat. Does the off-center genoa furler affect balance? What about chafe from the dual forestay? Can the a/c unit be moved elsewhere? I would want to restore that pilot berth.

    So what do you think Mr. Hold Fast! Should my next boat be a Cabo Rico 38 or a Shannon 38. ? Appreciate your thought on that. Thanks for the excellent vids!

    • @TheCorsair
      @TheCorsair  3 года назад +1

      Cabo Rico 38. Probably not much difference in sailing performance but the build philosophy was better at Cabo Rico. For example the Shannon’s have metal tanks which eventually fail. Cabo’s only have Fiberglass tanks. I’ve never heard of one failing. Many other design/build differences which favor the Cabo. I will say the Shannon 38 cockpit is much better that the Cabo 38.

      @@TheCorsair solid advice. I think the Cabo also has a nicer hull to look at. She’s heavier though. Cheers!

    For all the good looks, the Shannon's were poor sailors. The Shannon 28 was so bad, one owner told me he had to use the engine to get it to tack. Friends had a 37 and unloaded it as fast as they could. Offshore? No way.

      Paul Whelan Well, I had a Shannon 28 and never had any trouble tacking it without using the engine! I knew of a 28 sailed t0 Bermuda and back (brushed a hurricane) and came through with no problem except a damaged dodger. Not the most spacious of boats for live aboard but well constructed.
