I sure can't argue with that. He wasn't the best scorer, wasn't the best rebounder, wasn't the best assist man, but he might have been the best passer. All of that said, he was still great at all of that, which very few others are, or have been, and his instincts for where to be and what to do were probably unsurpassed. Total that out, plus other attributes, and it would be difficult for anybody, with much basketball knowledge, to have a legitimate argument against it. My favorite player to watch, all-time.

Let me tell you something, watching all of Birds game back in the day was amazing. He put on a show EVERY game. He is still the smartest most clutch player I have ever seen! Bird was also 3 steps ahead of everyone on the court. He had the purest shot, he rebound like a center and his passing was the best of any big man to ever play. The greatness of Larry Legend was that he willed his teams to win! It was that simple. He's my GOAT, and it's not even close!

He said, you gotta guard Larry. But what are you going to guard? His shooting? He will make you look stupid with a pass. His passing? He will make you look stupid with his shooting. He can try to guard him closely and try to prevent both, but Larry isn't fast but his first step is quick and would knock you off balance and he would make you look stupid. The only way Rodman slowed Larry down was to basically hug him the whole game.

The 83 Sixers, and the 87 Lakers had a lot to do with Bird having 3 chips instead of 4, or 5. Those were two of the absolute greatest teams in NBA history. The Celtics could have beat the Lakers again in 85, but Kareem had an unbelievable series, and proved to the world that he was still "that dude". The NBA was blessed to have the two best players of the 80's playing in seperate conferences with great teams who played the game the right way. Bird, and Magic broke the damn needle on the hype scale for the decade. Those Celtics and Lakers teams gave us the greatest Finals matchups anyone could ask for as a fan of basketball. We also had Dr J, Kareem, Worthy, Isaiah Thomas, Dumars, Rodman, Lambeer, Mchale, Parish, DJ, Moses Malone, Drexler, Wilkins, and the list goes on and on. Even MJ's Bulls were in the conversation at the time, especially in 89, and 90 when they had those great series against the Pistons. The 80's were the most competitve era for basketball. That's why I think those back-to-back chips for the Lakers and Pistons were extremely impressive because that hadn't happened since the Bill Russell Celtics. With that being said, I believe the 86 Celtics could have beaten any team in NBA history in a series. They were that great as a team, and Larry Bird was the x factor.

What many of these highlights don’t show is that Larry was one of the hardest workers ever. He was CONSTANTLY moving on offense working to get open. Nobody worked as hard as Larry.
What people frequently don’t know is that teams worked very hard trying to stop Larry. Do you think other players wanted to have Larry show them up? Oh hell no. They did every kind of push, bang , shove, block, grab, everything they could to stop him. Larry just kept working.
Larry obviously wasn’t the most gifted athlete. Couldn’t jump, wasn’t fast etc. But he’d work your ass into the ground with constant movement. Super hard work makes up for a lot. Also he was a vicious competitor. He would not tolerate losing.

That steal has a little more story to it.Laimbeer was fouling everybody and had actually put his foot under Parish and twisted Parish's ankle. Parish hauled off and took Laimbeer to the ground. The refs didn't call anything. However everyone of us knew that when the footage was reviewed Parish was going to get suspended for at least one game. So winning game 6 without him was going to be nearly impossible. It takes a lot of practice to handle Larry's passes. Boston did lose game 6 without Parish but won game 7.

Larry couldn't stand Bill Laimbeer, because he'd try to damage people by hitting on their ankles under the basket, and that is how Robert Parish's ankle was hurt and it was not called as a foul because it wasn't seen. Larry said when Bill tried it with him, Larry just did it back the next time and Laimbeer left him alone after that. Laimbeer was a dirty player and he didn't respect players.
Not only were the games packed, but when they held his retirement ceremony in the Boston Garden, even though it was not a game night, it was packed.
Dennis Johnson was so good and he and Bird clicked. And there are videos out there showing his highlights.

One big reason when Isaiah and Rodman caught heat Larry did not play into it.
Also, when Magic got sick Larry was real. He is the epitome of Martin Luther King of judging man by character and not by his color.

I got out of boot camp just in time to see Boston beat my Rockets in the finals. I hate Bird so much I started copying him. I got good at those behind the backboard shots and catching rebounds in the air and shooting before hitting the ground. We made a game out of it. Sorta like 21, but you went in order.. if the free-throw shooter missed, the next guy had to catch the rebound in the air and shoot before hitting ground. You miss and the next guy tried until someone makes it, and they do the free throws.

So tired of hearing the one complaining about how "But Larry cant Dunk", wheres his dunk package" etc etc -- Dunking is just for poster shots, same amount of points whether its a dunk or a layup. Its true Larry didnt jump high or run like a deer, but it just didnt matter far as getting the buckets and getting the W goes. Larry played his own pace and his own style and won games and championships poster dunks be damned - so many forget Larry competed at the highest level in the NBA with numerous injuries including a bad back, two achillies surgeries, a broken disfigured finger and numerous other injuries.

Since you're a lebron fan and think he is the GOAT because you're still a baby in this world ( I can say this because I'm 66 and saw Bird Live and on TV) and he is all the "milk" you have ever had, go and compare their age 30 stats for the season and feast your eyes on the real GOAT of this league. Then if that don't convince you split your screen and put Bird's 13 year career resume' on one side and lebron's first 13 years of his resume' and see what each of them accomplished in 13 years. Two things stick out the most. 1. Bird's BACK TO BACK TO BACK LEAGUE MVP'S. 2. Bird played his last 7 years with a broken back! I don't honestly know which is more impressive, but lebron didn't do either of them did he? There are so many other things to say here but nothing else is needed. The comparison is already OVER! Dunks are pretty but so are hot girls. The most valuable thing in a player's resume' is game winning money time clutch buckets, this is the prime ingredient in a GOAT. Larry Legend is a cool name, but his name should be Larry Joe Clutch Bird because clutch is what flowed thru his veins! Bird would tell you and the whole bench and coaches, "I'm taking this last shot from right there. I'm gonna stick it in your face and there is nothing any of you can do about it!" Bird was all MONEY and he did it better than anyone ever has!

Jordan is the Goat , then Magic and Bird . What these youngsters today, don’t understand is the game back then was completely different. A lot more physical. Today’s game has all these NEW RULES to if a fingernail touches an offensive player, the refs call a foul with the players crying and whining, especially LeBron. If LeBron or Kevin Garnett played backed then, they would average 25 points a game. Jordan today in his prime with average 60 with magic and Bird averaging 45. I’m so tired of ignorant people who do not know the game try and put Steph Curry, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, in the same category as magic and bird let alone the goat Michael Jordan. Do some research know the difference and how physical the game was back then compared to today. The dream team was the greatest of all time.
