im not sure how any these are value GPUs you can buy a brand new RX 5700XT 185$ and the RX 5500 XT is less 120$ new , the RX 6600 is great card especially if you take into account the power draw, but of course this video is a little old and i consider value only to be found in budget GPU as well, but price vs performance is the RX 6800 XT hands down but as far as 1080P play-ability vs price the 120$ 8G RX 5500 XT is way out in front, the sale end at the end of the month as well

@@FriendNotFoeBand It's not selling though, which tells you, it is an unwanted card, it offers too little for the price in the segment where people were buying 70 class cards.
Also AI is just another marketing nonsense, just like "content creators" were the years before. 90% of GeForce cards are bought for gaming and maybe some incidental rendering accelerations of your family videos, especially the lower-end graphics cards, which for Nvidia 4000 series is basically everything under the 4090, because it is literally cut to garbage levels.
The 4070 is really a 60 class card, based on specs and based on the performance you get from it. It might be the most sensible priced Nvidia card for a long time, but that doesn't help when people think its still overpriced, and the competition has actually cards that offer way more future stability for cheaper. I would take 16GB of VRAM over 12GB any day, that ray tracing advantage in the 4070, wont be there come next year, when the 12GB isn't enough anymore at 1440p, and the 6800XT will stomp over this card, let alone the 6950XT.
Also worth noting here is, that outside of US, the 4070 is priced around 10% from the 7900XT, at which point, nobody needs to think which card to get, one that is 20-30% faster in raster and gives you 20GB of VRAM, or well, the 12GB card that should have been a $400 card.

Very nice analysis. The one thing I would nit pick is the comparison between the 7900xt and the 6950xt. There is a significant difference between the energy consumption, and that’s would eat into you $150 savings over time. Especially if you live in a market with high energy costs. Usually not an issue, but the 6950xt is particularly inefficient compared to it’s performance competition.

Secondly I will need to change almost my case, my power supply and various other components if I buy the 4090. So when I upgrade I will rather go for a 7900 XTX or 7900XT. It will be a less disruptive upgrade. Maybe if I started from scratch with a whole new system I would do a 4090 when I feel like spending a small fortune but for now I think AMD offers a lot of reasonable cards with 16 gig VRAM or more.

Recently the RX 5700xt has been going on average for 170 here recently, which performs on par/a tad lower then the RX 6600xt which costs approx 50-70 dollars more. While the card is from 2019 and does have 8gb of Vram, the 6600xt has the same amount of Vram which in my eyes makes the slightly older card a better value currently for its performance.
Since you're going by cards sold new only I see why the RX 5000 series isn't included, but then the 6600xt sold new is $255 at its cheapest with other options closer to $300. There of course is country difference too but seems like everything data wise is standardized which is great.

Our home rigs have the 6750 XT and 2 use 5700xt (my hand me downs to the kids) and for what we use our computers for, there is absolutely no way I will ever pay that much again for a gpu or be upgrading for 5 + years. All 3 of our pcs use 570 mobos with the ryzen 5800x3d. I will be skipping the entire next chipset as well. We have a few spare 2070s and 1660 supers sitting in a closet for back ups if anything fails. These prices on top of inflation are just going to put up and coming gamers (the crowd that keep tech and comp gaming alive) will just go back to consoles. I have not met any average teen/early 20s gamer that can waste a grand+ on a gpu for a few textures. RT itself is a joke. It adds nothing to our experience.

I'd hate to be trapped in a cycle of needing the latest GPU/CPU with eyes on the % increase the whole time. Give me high/medium settings and I'm golden, you barely notice ultra anyway after a period of time in game. Reminds me of how PS2 games from memory were like photoreal, it's all in your head and they're not that important (just look at how ppl are loving that minecraft looking Battlefield style game which blew up).
I guess if gaming is your only hobby and you have the disposable income then it's whatever, but with other hobbies, a kid and wife and actually liking to touch grass, I just couldn't justify an AM5 / 6900xt or 7900xt upgrade. Went with the 6700xt instead

My problem with the whole value calculations everyone makes, is that the cost to manufacture never seems to come up in the conversion.
Take the 4070TI, being less than half the die size, half the memory bus, and half the memory capacity of the 4090, this would historically place this card with a 60 or 60TI name, with a price 1/3rd to 1/4th the price of the 4090, or $539 on the high side, and $400 on the low side of historical pricing.
This is the first time in Nvidia's history, that a lower mid-range card has a higher per-card margin than the top end non-titan/non-90TI card
The 4090 is roughly the same card as the 3090 die size and memory bus, it only went up by $100 or around 7%
The 4070TI is roughly the same card as the 12GB 3060, upgraded to GDDR6X, and it went up by $570, or 242% of the price of the $329 3060
Dont forget that the 3090 was priced before the parts inflation/shortages, and the 3060 was priced right in the center of the parts shortages/inflation
It is looking like the 4070TI might soon cost less to manufacture than the 12GB 3060, yet the asking price was going to be $900 before they changed the name from 12GB 4080, making it plain to see for anyone who didnt know, these names are arbetrary and based on how much they want you to pay for them, not how much it cost to manufacture

@@MrTKDartist R&D is not something new for the 40 series, every generation has needed to fund the next.
I'm basing the cost of these cards on historical pricing, the equivelant of the 4090 in past cards, IE 3090, notr 3090TI, 2080TI not Titan RTX, 780TI not the Titan ect.
And then the card that has the closest cost reduction that the 4070TI has to the 4090.
Normally, they're given the XX60 name, and are priced at 1/3rd to 1/4th that of the equivelant cut-down top die.
Even though the die size of the GTX 1080 and the 4070TI are the same, the 1080TI and Titan was reletively small compared to the top, making the 1060 actually a high average MSRP despite it being ~200mm instead of 300mm
The 3060 was far below the average at almost 1/5th MSRP, but even taking the high average, the 4070TI should be costing $539, but as little as $400

They're 20-25% cheaper with equal or slightly better performance. AND, a big and, they have 12GB of vram rather than 8. For me today a good low end GPU has to be the 5700xt. Great price vs performance. I bought one for one of my kids PCs to replace a GTX 1070. I honestly can't buy a 3060 12gb or a 6600xt when you can get the 5700xt for under 200 quid alday. I get it's a risk but in my history of PC building since 1999.. new hardware has failed me far more than second hand.. Doa on new hardware over them years has been higher than secondhand Doa.

I've watched countless videos for GPU comparisons and this is a standout as the best. The charts are great and very informative. I can also say that I've tried a lot of these cards and completely agree with your take-home comments about their performance. I think every one is getting annoyed with Nvidia's attitude toward their client base and I personally hope to see them receive a dose of reality when a real competitor (hopefully AMD) levels the playing field by competing with them in professional applications usage and feature set, but I'm not sure we're less than two generations from getting there. Thanks for the content, the pc building community, and perhaps even more so; first-time builders need these videos, so please don't stop producing them.

GPU doesn´t matter that much to me now, my flat is incredibly hot at the moment and I have had to limit all my games to 90 fps as a standard. AMD states 85 celsius is fine for a 7800x3d but the longer I play the warmer the coolant gets, given the ambient temperatures I just chose to be on the safe side. I simply don´t like 85 celsius in a prolonged gameplay session, 80 is as far as I will go. Limiting the FPS has solved my problem (not all games require it but most do currently).

Reason I prefer to go for mid-range. I don't care enough about benchmarks to be bothered about minor % increases, and if I can save hundreds by turning down a couple simple settings from ultra to high, with a barely imperceptible impact on how a game looks and plays, then you're an idiot if you don't, IMO, unless you have more than enough disposable income to cover it.
After 10 minutes I don't even notice the graphics anyway, so give me mid-range any day. Plus like you said you never know what will happen with sales, price crashes, or leaps in tech with the next Console cycle and devs making/optimizing a lot of games for that.

You will forced to lower game settings and will miss some beautiful graphics, and forget the RT use.
So don't go for 8GB GPU, not even at mid level.
If you want spend good, and hold it for 2-3 years, better go for 12GB or even better 16GB VRAM GPUs.
Just keep it in mind if you still go for 8GB GPUs (especially in low level range).

I feel like this might help some people, so I will post a comment.
    My PC Specs:
    13600kf
    6700XT
    DDR5 5600Mhz CL36 2x16
2TB NVMe SSD from Leven, and a 500GB 970 EVO Plus as the boot drive.
The main games I play are Minecraft, Valorant, LoL, various VR Steam Games, Cities Skylines, Football management games like FM23 and FIFA23, Elden Ring occasionally, etc.
In games like Minecraft, I am running a Quilt Mod suite with fabric mods that improve performance (The CaffeineMC mods suite), and the fabric shaders mod. I have 8GB of RAM allocated to MC. With these specs, mods on a 1440p 144hz monitor, I am able to run a 64x64 texture pack with the highest setting BSL shader with a render and simulation distance of 24 chunks at an average of 200 FPS. My 1% lows were around 170 and my peak FPS was around 220.
In Valorant, I am able to average over 500 at the highest settings, though the FPS would swing often, causing stutter. When capping the FPS to my screen resolution, My FPS never dipped by more than 5 frames from 150fps. It was very, very smooth.
Games like Cities Skylines and FM23 put a lot more pressure on my system. Especially FM23. The load times when simulating seasons would take quite a while, but I was also running over 20 leagues on a large database of about 70,000 players. In Cities Skylines, performance is smooth for 90% of the gameplay, but larger cities would cause slight lag (Would drop under 100 FPS).
I have not played Elden Ring on this system as I recently bought the GPU, but I would predict that I should be able to get over 144FPS on medium to high settings. If I'm wrong, I apologize. Please refer to GPU benchmark videos for accurate results.
The main thing to take away is how well the 6700XT runs for systems that aren't playing hyper demanding games. When you spoke of the high value, yet time resistant cards, I think the 6700XT is probably the best, possibly beat by the 6800XT (But the price of the 6800XT makes it difficult to say). With 12 GB of VRAM and very, very good 1440p performance, you would be hard pressed to find a better card that you can buy for around $300 used, and usually less than $300 on sites like Ebay. My own card was bought open-box from Microcenter for $312 including tax.
I also wanted to mention that I found it difficult to find 6750XTs at the price you stated in the video. Perhaps in the weeks following the video release, prices have gone up, but I doubt it. The cheapest 6750XT I found on Ebay was $335, and that was an outlier. It looks like the average for this GPU was around $400-$420. Microcenter sells the cards at $380, with my local store having one open box card at $380 as well (But it is a better AIB card).
The 6700XT prices also seem a little off as I've regularly found cards close or even less than $300. This might affect your value graphs by a lot. I feel like it is important to keep in mind the "Used Market" as well, considering how miners are mass selling GPUs at a discount. (Also to note, contrary to belief, mined cards are actually very well taken care of the majority of the time).

  • @Halibut86
    @Halibut86 Год назад

Im interpreting the values here to mean higher resolution sees a larger impact from more powerful GPUs
    Ex - 4070ti vs 4090 @ 4k shows 98 -> 159fps, a 62% increase
    4070ti vs 4090 @ 1080p shows 209 -> 250fps, a 20%~ increase
So, the 4k/ultra (not recommended) gamer is seeing a gigantic performance increase compared to someone who plays on more competitive, more responsive settings.
More FPS is a smoother experience AND lower latency. This combines with a high-refresh and clear display to give you the best experience.

I can't change how volatile prices are. All I can do is record them and structure the video in the most effective way. And, as stated, the graphs are the lowest 10% price over the last month (not absolute lowest - to combat pricing error anomalies and to represent a "good price" over the time period)
So check the comment section and if the price isn't what you want, come back the next day... Things will likely change. (Which is why one of us spends roughly an hour a day doing this)

I want to touch on a comment a few others have made regarding wattage and efficiency and the typical reply of 'who cares about electricity when buying a £600 graphics card'.
I work from home, with my PC running from 9 - 5 for work and then additional mixed use in the evening and at weekends including heavy use in gaming. This won't all be at full load so for the sake of an example I will do a comparison assuming the GPU runs at full load for 4 hours per day on average. I am in the market for a GPU with a £600 budget and I am considering either the 4070 or the 6950 XT which can both be had for around £590 at the time of writing.
Total card power figures below taken from Gamers Nexus 4070 review (for the sake of this example and due to a lack of data I won't touch on undervolting, frame rate capping etc. to further improve the efficiency of these cards, just taking the recorded max load power draw at face value):
    RTX 4070FE Stock : 203W
Sapphire RX 6950 XT Nitro Stock VBIOS: 377.2W
UK Electricity average price: £0.34/kwh and assuming 4 hours full load per day:
RTX 4070FE Stock: £0.28 per day
Sapphire RX 6950 XT Nitro Stock VBIOS: £0.51 per day
Over the course of a year that is £84 of difference just on GPU energy consumption with the above assumptions. If you average this over say an expected 4 year lifetime, it then puts the RTX 4070 at £590 vs the 6950XT at £590 + 4 * £84 = £926 in comparative cost factoring in the difference in energy consumption.
This isn't an argument for team green over team red, I still haven't bought a card yet and I loathe the 12GB in the 4070 and the 6950XT does enjoy around a 10% performance advantage in rasterization. I just wanted to highlight the frames per wattage is now a big consideration when making price comparisons on cards if you are unfortunate enough to live in an area with high energy costs and you are a heavy user.

Really like the lack of faff with the caveats.
Feeling ok about my £1000 6900 xt at the start of the pandemic / shortage, now!

In Australia we remain in the rather perplexing situation with prices such as:
    RX 6600 XT: $455 AUD
    RX 6650 XT: $499 AUD
RX 6700 10GB $439 AUD. YES CHEAPER AND FASTER!
The RTX 4070 is DOA at $1,000 AUD.

Stay away from 8gb vram. Right now 12gb of vram is already considered to be the new bare minimum with plenty of games maxing out at 12gb vram even on 1080p and a few going well over 12gb on higher resolutions. So if you want a future proof gpu, do not buy 8gb gpu's. Buy one that has atleast 12gb vram or if you can stretch your budget, get 16gb vram, it will satisfy you alot more.

I'd like to show my written appreciation for your well thought out and presented analysis since, well, I can't like and subscribe more than once, right? 😉
Just a minor suggestion, data wise: I believe it would be more intuitive to lock the bar colours to a given resolution, instead of to bar length. Then we'd always associate, for instance, white to 4K in either FPS or cost/performance graphs, instead of flipping between 4K and 1080p white bars... Just my 0.02€! 🤓

A well designed and thought out video. Thank. PS: I used the data to buy an AMD. My card smoked beyond reasonable repair so even thought I wanted to wait, because of the present market stupidity I was forced to replace my video card. I bought the heaviest discounted from your list and cheapest I could find just to get by until prices return to normal. What ever good will Nvidia had with me is just gone. You think that is what Jensen wanted when he decided to "Shape the Market"?

One of the few people who thought the XT was the better buy and still proven right over and over. Those initial 100 dollars difference you could buy multiple other stuff for you rig. Now with 200 dollars difference its a no brainer. One of the few times major RUclipsrs that I like and respect like Steve and Stephen bashed on the GPU needlessly. Love to see how wrong they were in their hate.

Thanks for this video... I'm currently on a GTX 970. I just upgraded to a completely new Ryzen 9 7900 rig, but I'm stuck with either getting a $200 dollar card to use for 12 months (6600-ish) until options improve or buy one of the few options with 16 GBs of VRAM with the intention to keep it for the next 36+ months (7900 XT, 4080 or waiting for the 7800XT).

Man, I loved my GTX970 so much! I would have used through this summer but sadly sold it last summer due to shipping costs at the time (moved from Alaska to the mid-west for better medical).

Maybe a 6700XT even? I upgraded from a 1060 6GB and while I still could have got use out of it turning stuff down, even a 6700XT has been a massive difference.
Honestly don't plan on upgrading that for at least 1-2 years, maybe even longer and I'll have it as long as I kept my 1060 (5 years). Then again I'm not a big graphics whore as you barely notice them after like 15 minutes in game, and I'm happy to match Console perf as that's roughly what most games are made for, so I guess everyone is diff.
