Same exact thing happened to me. I discovered Kiss in a true way later in life. I wasn’t allowed to listen to them in the 1980s when I was a kid. Too many adults around me thought they were devil worshipers and said their name stood for Kids in Satan’s Service. No lie. They really thought that. Anyway, one day I was listening to hard rock songs on my Amazon echo and that one came on and I was hooked. I started really listening to their albums and found song after song that really hit. If Desmond says its revolutionary then damn well is. Alot of things kiss have done are revolutionary in the music business from their image, live shows, meet n greets, cruises & now avatars.
Gene Simmons is crafty. In 1982, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance wrote a song. They thought they gave Simmons a finished copy. But, he said no 👎 and added a 3rd verse. Thus, Rock and Roll Hell is listed as "written by Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance and Gene Simmons ". Adams and Vallance got schooled 🏫. But, they were younger, thus, more naive. Desmond Child hit it bigger in 1986, writing with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, and in 1987, writing with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Bon Jovi and Aerosmith albums were recorded in Little Mountain Sound ⛰ Studios 🎙, Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦. Produced by the late Bruce Fairbairn, RIP, and engineered by Bob Rock.
Kiss secured management in 1974 and cashed their first million in late'75 when Alive! sold big. Beth and I Was Made For Lovin' You were the original band's big songs. Management found it more and more difficult to keep the band together and in 1979 it imploded when drummer Peter Criss was fired. After several line up changes, in 1990 Kiss hit the Top 40 with powerballad, Forever.
And of course, thank you different child for an hour. Lannihilating kisses coordinates core audience in 79 for real. We could have done without this dude
Unfortunately, as far as "revolutionary" you got Trevor Rabin in 1977 with a song called Love Life, which melded classical, rock, disco and then reggae in its outro. Granted, it was not a hit, but he went into that territory, and IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT. PS - "I don't think I saw that many teeth in my lifetime." Desmond Child is a funny dude.
I think the song would have done better in the US if Ace and Peter had recorded it. If you listen to the live version with them, it sounds totally different.
The song is a classic. I saw the Psycho Circus reunion tour twice and when they did I Was Made for Lovin You at both shows it got the biggest reaction from the crowd. The KISS Army may have been told to hate it in 1979 but it went to #1 and it sounds great to this day. It’s insane to pretend IWMFLY isn’t a rare jewel in KISS’s crown and one that all involved should be proud of. It doesn’t keep showing up on every compilation by accident.
No band except the Beatles caused such a sensationv as when Kiss came to Australia in 1980. Kiss iceblocks, Norman Gunston doing "Kiss Army"....non stop hype, it was incredible.
That song was hard to swallow from KISS..I remember the first time I heard the song..at a night club..didn't sound like KISS but it was definitely Paul's vocals. True that the song inspired the early to mid eighties..addicted to love..legs..that sound.
I think Desmond got it wrong here when he says Gene said they posted guards to keep outside Desmond out; it wasn’t for 1981’s The Elder, it was for 1992’s Revenge.
Gene always felt threatened by those he perceived as having greater talent than he. At the time I Was Made for Lovin' You perplexed many hardcore KISS fans as 'going disco', yet it got the most radio airplay of any KISS song. That justified many a KISS nerds' existence back in the day.
Gene Simmons apologizing in four words on the answering machine is kind of like the Happy Days episode where the Fonz had to try 5 or 6 times to say he was actually wrong about something before it could come out of his mouth.
I had a couple hand me down kiss albums and dug the live energy and image. Imagine how disappointed I was to buy IWMFLY as my first record…. I got home and the look on my face must’ve matched my father’s disgust from such a fruity song. It’s true, imagine can get you in the door, but it takes substance to stay there.
Gene's comment was at least ten years later than Child says. The Elder came out in 1981 and Child didn't have the success he mentions (Bon Jovi, Aerosmith) until 1986/87. It was around 1991/92 that Gene came up with the armed guards shtick when interviewed about promoting Revenge... the Desmond Child reference meant they had (again) got back to edgier stuff... Bullshit goes both ways...
I understand that Desmond Child is a talented pop writer, but it all sounds a bit too cookie cutter, especially the 80's hits after I was made... I still very very much prefer the heavier more aggressive style of Gene Simmon's songs
It’s mixing that Desmond Child has made so much money from writing some of the worst songs ever recorded. Anytime I hear a shitty song that sounds dated and cheesy from the 80’s and 90’s it can almost be assured that it was written by Desmond Child, this song was the beginning of that schlock.
I never agree with anything Gene says. But, with this, I couldn’t agree more, I was made for loving you is a lame ass, gay song. And KISS should be embarrassed for making Dynasty, the Elder and Unmasked.
