  • The Famili Remote Food Thermometer is pretty awesome. I am a little sad that I did not come upon this gem sooner. I also think that what you get is all that you need and for the money paid it poses a great value.
I really like this little unit. For starters, it comes with the batteries (4 AAA). I always like it when manufacturers go that extra step. The illustrated instruction manual shows you how to pop in the batteries and pair these two. It was pretty easy but make sure you follow the guidelines (i.e. power up the transmitter first). The probe is stainless steel, nice and long with a slight bend to keep the cord away from the flames. I also like the rubberized outer coverings on both of these units, in case you drop one off of the grill it will be able to absorb a shock.
Operation is pretty easy and self explanatory. You pop in the batteries, pair them up (they stay paired until you replace batteries in one, so you don't have to do this every time) and then select what you are cooking. Certain items like chicken, don't give you an option for the taste button. Chicken gets cooked to 165. Other items, like the Beef setting, let you select your taste preferences so you can have it still bleeding or tough as leather and anywhere in between.
That's it...turn on, pair, insert probe, select meat, select taste (if applicable) and then wait. You can see the temperature of the probe on both units, the screen blinks blue for every 10 degree rise in temperature. When you get within 10 degrees of your desired temperature, the screen blinks green. When the meat is cooked, the screen flashes red and continues to beep. This is really handy because it isn't just one beep but continues beeping. The visual cues also let you put the receiver unit afar and you can remotely monitor the screen to see when it goes from one color to the next.
The unit also works with a 300' range which is impressive. This is also key. Other wireless units use Bluetooth (which is the worst idea), or wifi but t his one uses radio transmission which is the best in my opinion. With Bluetooth or wifi, all you need is one unit to be out of range and your meal will get overcooked. The radio transmission also adds to the simplicity of this unit. You don't need a smartphone, an app or a password to use the device. You just turn them on and rock the grill.
In all fairness I couldn't find much that I didn't like about this unit or design. One thing which I did not like is the fact that the manual says not to get the transmitter wet or exposed to water. I think this could be easily remedied with a rubber gasket battery seal in the back and a little more robustness in the transmitter unit. This would allow me to use it when it is raining out. Not the best grilling weather but I have been known to grill in the rain, running out to flip once and then running back to grab it off the grill.
Here is why you need this. I was coming to this part. Well, you don't really need it but it is nice to have. Take for example chicken. Before I would go out, cook the chicken, throw it on a plate and then slice through the thickest part of the breast. Sometimes, I was a little too eager and it would still be pink. I throw it back on the grill, cook it a few more minutes and then would sit down to enjoy my dry chicken with no juices. Now, I put the probe in it, watch the heat rise, let it get to 165, then I stick it in a few more places after I let the probe cool down to make sure it is done. So far two breasts have turned out perfectly because I was able to snatch them off the grill the minute they were done. Well, I let them get up to 167 them I grab them for good measure. So there you have it, it will save you from drying out your chicken not to mention the bevy of other good things it will do on other meats. That, and the fact that it was accurate, easy to use, has a great range and is relatively inexpensive makes this a great value as well.
This is the perfect gift for Dad or any grillin' gal.
