    New Sakashima is really interesting because he *could* be the main focus of the deck, but he’s strongest as a clone of his partner...like Krark for instance :)))

      This is actually something I'm planning on doing. I want to make a modular deck (not the keyword) where I have a half deck as a base and I can build other partners around that base. So far I have decided that Sakashima will be my base deck, and I'm planning on making a vial smasher half of the deck as well as hopefully a Tana half to make Temur clones.

    The way I generally built partner decks was to have a proactive one and a support one. One Commander's job was to win the game or generate the winning board state, and the other was to generate card advantage or value and operate when my deck wasn't working as intended. I think that strategy works well for those decks, might be something to consider looking at Partners for the future.

    I have a akiri and ishai deck that plays like double voltron, equipment tribal themes. I agree its hard to keep two cmdrs on the field, but using one for cmdr dmg on opp 1 and the other on opp 2 works pretty well.

    • @xdavid00

      @@Kazz1187 yes, if searching a hidden zone (library) for a specific card or type of card, you can always choose to find nothing. and of course if you don't have a card that matches the search requirements, you have to choose to find nothing. so you can use "partner with" to shuffle library and find nothing.

    I'm with Dana, og Partners are too generically good and, because they enable 4 colors, don't have a place within the color pie, it's just a matter of what color you're ok with leaving behind. I know that there was (and is) a lot of people asking for four color commanders, but I think that we only got a hundred of different flavors of Thrasios and/or Tymna.

    • @corhydrae3238
      @corhydrae3238 3 года назад +1

      It really depends. Most of the og Partners are fine, actually. Reyhan, Tana, Akiri, Silas Renn etc are specific in their themes and the power level is okay.
      They just never should have printed any partner without a specific theme. Thrasisos and Tymna are obvious problems, and some like Kraum and Kydele are also way too goodstuffy.

  • @amodking
    @amodking 3 года назад +3

    My favorite duel commanders, reyhan and Silas renn.
    Basically because I used an old mechanic called modular.
    Basically modular creature comes into the battlefield as 0:0’s, and depending on the modular level they come in with that many +1/+1 counters, but it has another line that states whenever this creature dies transfer the counters to another artifact creature.
    The idea is simple, Reyhan works like a counter multiplier, sense he has the wording whenever a creature dies it transfers the counters.. well they already transfer counters so it doubles up the effect.
    Then the second commander has the ability to bring artifacts back, and hilarious enough being an artifact herself. So... technically both commanders are being abused heavily equally but for different reasons.
    Thoughts?

    • @santiagoberkley920
      @santiagoberkley920 3 года назад

      Modular is an interesting ability for an EDH deck! I’m with Dana on most partners for sure, but it seems like you got a real identity in your deck :)

    • @amodking
      @amodking 3 года назад

      @@santiagoberkley920 Only issue is, which is kinda sad. Like Mutate, there isn't allot of support for it. So in order to make it work effectively you almost need to cheat.
      Clones / tutors and such, but there is some interesting things that makes it unexpectedly powerful, those counter multipliers over a short among of time, all you need is an artifact that uses those counters to throw out thopters or say burn then you get a instant win or enough mana to do whatever you want with a good sac outlet... which funny enough you want anyway with modular.
      Whenever I design a deck, I have an overall game plan. But I always build in side win conditions and a quick burn or swarm is a good sneaky plan B.
      Another issue is haste, luckily or sadly depending on how you see it it only needs something as simple as boots of swiftness, but I like using an old artifact card called Drawbridge which has tap give all creatures haste tell the end of the turn. Quick combat, or just abuse flash.. it's really fair game.

  • @Leivve
    @Leivve 3 года назад +1

    Opposition in a token deck is a win condition in itself. If you have enough tokens to just tap all your opponent's mana. You've effectively reset them to turn 1 permanently.

    Myth Unbound could be good with the Kobold legendary, partner him with something with green, Kydele maybe. There's actually some kind of weird combo there if you keep sacrificing the kobold, recasting it, then tapping Kydele for mana equal to the number of times you've cast the kobold. Maybe you could use Blasting Station for your win condition? I don't know, I don't play combos, I feel like there's something janky there to combo out and win.

I will use haldan and pako for example because i just built a fun little janky one...side note my first built deck that didnt feature black, as i was ayara zombie, meren (great stuff), to tayam counters matter deck. Normally my ayara will be removed from board frequently in much the same as pako would.... however after spending 12 mana for the next 3 casts of your commander. The 5th cast/ 4th tax costed will nulled as you now cast your late game commander... saving 8 mana in tax alone... and on every subsequent cast of haldan you are still saving 8 mana per cast..

    I like the concept of "Identity" that Matt talked about as opposed to running staple cards, and I instatly thought about the "synergy" card values in the website, which represent more or less that but the name is somewhat confusing, identity would be a better label for those values, imho.

    • @CosmicConical
      @CosmicConical 3 года назад

      But staples can still be synergistic and build on the identity of your commander. Imo I think synergy is a good word for it, because it's more inclusive.

    • @jacobbrown9894
      @jacobbrown9894 3 года назад

      @@michielwitteveen6676 Hmm I'm no expert but in my opinion I'd go Kydelle, Ludevic, or Sakashima. Probably with more cantrips in the first, more damage stuff in the second, and really whatever way you want in the third.
      I don't really see Kraum or Ishai synergy since Krark wants you casting stuff and those punish opponents for going crazy with casts, Thrasios is just a generic value engine so always runnable and you'll probably ramp crazy but so boring, Silas is Aggro Artifacts while Krark is control spellslinger, Eligeth can be done with lots of scry stuff but it doesn't strike me as that impressive, Glacian works if you have lots of artifact token producing spells I guess (Imagine copying Brass's Bounty) but just like Eligeth feels doable but weak, Esior is pointless with a 2 drop partner where recasting it the first time or two isn't back-breaking, Malcolm is amazing but lacks synergy, Ramirez is again aggro not control, Siani can theoretically work there are spells that make flyers and flyers with spell synergies, Brinelin is fine if you go crazy spellslinger I'd probably run either these two in a Mizzix or Mizzix in them.
      Kydelle is the only of the three I really like that adds two other colors which is nice, and you can probably quickly tear through your deck and make tons of mana. Some sort of filtering and untap shenanigans, and then end with a high storm count like Grapeshot or Aetherflux Reservoir. Ludevic and Sakashima both end it at Izzet which is of course prime spellslinger anyways and being just two colors gives flexibility and streamlining. Ludevic gives the draw and synergy, and goes "See I have a gimmicky commander and one that anyone can use and isn't really abusable, I'm no threat". Meanwhile Sakashima gives a double dose of Krark that can grow even more with both clone creatures and cloning spells like Quasiduplicate and Cackling Counterpart or if you get the mana Clone Legion. Your play group will hate you when you flip seventeen coins per spell but at least at that point it's like two or three spells until you win lol

    @dreddbolt 3 года назад

    I've found one aspect of brewing partner decks to be a measure of challenging myself to find which commanders can I have carrying enough of a load to be close enough to each other... maybe even Haldan (Avid Arcanist) and Pako (Arcane Retriever). With such in mind, under construction, I currently have Haldan & Pako, Nikara & Yannik, and Pir & Toothy.
    Haldan-Pako
    I feel like late game isn't always the meta to have Haldan join his canid companion on the field, because I may want to 'cash in' stolen spells earlier on to prevent a more resourceful player from combo-ing off, or I might want to cast a ramp spell and copy it to help secure the late game later on.
    Nikara-Yannik
    Nikara's a bit of a support mage, but it can be nice to get more mileage out of the partnership with beneficial sacrifice effects to accelerate to my backup plans more quickly, if I'm under the impression one of my opponents is going to pull too far ahead or get too many combo pieces too early.
    Pir-Toothy
    Toothy is quite a bit of a focus, but backup plans are definitely needed, just in case someone throws the wrong kind of wrench into my machine. Proliferation helps, just in case Toothy's having trouble staying on the field, and Simic is just a horribly boring color combo for me in the first place, so being able to manage counters can keep my brain going when my game plan loses too much personal engagement.
    The upcoming commanders have me excited for color combos I may be able to change my mind about, like Boros and Selesnya. I'm especially hyped about the new kobold legend.

    Hey you guys loved the podcast as usual. I just had a question about partners on a lot more technical level with regards to the EDHREC website. I dont know if any of you are on the data-collection side of the website, but I've been wondering ever since Commander Legends was announced how you all were going to display all the new deck info about the partners on the website a little more clearly. Cause with the thousand or so partner combinations now available how are you going to display that without totally overwhelming the site with information that doesnt really seem as useful. This has just been on my mind recently and I dont know if anyone at EDHREC has plans on how to address it. Thanks as always for the quality content, and I'm really looking to build some spicy partner pairs from this set.

If you look at his decks they have the staples and most efficient cards, they are pretty much the edhrec page for that commander. Sure he doesn’t use the most popular commanders but one card doesn’t make your deck hipster. I dont see how Reki legendaries, Edric flying men, and Mina and Denn landfall is hipster.

    "you have to be able to afford both commander taxes" - if you can afford one then you can afford the other. what a bizarre statement.
