If season 4 ended with this scene. It would've been probably the greatest cliffhanger in a television series. I was completely speechless when Smith opened the door to reveal that some of the men were loyal to him. I was in disbelief. I don't think I will ever be as surprised as I was with this scene again.
OMG, you need to watch "Dallas" and the whole "Who shot JR" cliffhanger. THAT is the greatest cliffhanger ever from a TV series. Second would probably be the series finale of "The Fugitive", which I've never seen or watched but it is legendary. This was good, and unexpected, but those TV shows were epic.
I saw this scene before watching the show. It actually got me into it. However, watching the series all the way up to this scene made it so much better and was just as shocking.

What episodes? There was only one last hastly rushed crappy season finale after this episode. They didn't let Smith be in his role as Reichsfuhrer long enough to do anything before killing him...
The next episode showed John Smith embraced being a Nazi. His entire attack plan was a carbon copy of the Nazis attacks. Making camps to kill the same people the Nazis did in MITHC
You know I might be the only one here but I have to appreciate Hoover’s stoicism when being faced not only with his death but being stabbed in the stomach, that is incredibly painful. Props to him for taking it like a champ.
not sure why they didn't keep him though. He obviously was good at his job and they still needed him, not like he had anywhere else to go, and not much to gain by killing his new bosses.

@@haydricht6899 well, the thing is, it is HEAVILY implied that in the wake of John Smith's demise, William "Bill" Whitcroft became the defacto leader of Nazi America... but instead of furthering the regime, he used his power to reinstate the United States of America, as he was seen taking off a nazi medal after calling off an attack on the Black Communist Resistance, which means he had denounced Naziism. And who knows? Maybe after that, slowly, more of the allied powers start trickling back too, and could lead to the defeat of the central powers in this universe too. Who knows?
Damn this scene depicts the analytical and persuasive mind of Jon Smith. His approach to tackle the direst of situations makes him a formidable person to reckon with. He changed the course of reality by joining forces against Himmler and plotted efficiently to not only kill him but take North America for himself. What a great diplomat. Amazing performance by Rufus.
But we must realize Rufus cut his acting chops on stuff like Shakespeare.... Stuff that would put me to sleep.... I thought it was such a sweet move, to stare into Hoover's eyes just as he twists the knife.... Revenge...
Yeah, I'm going, and suggest many people do the same, to pretend the show ended here. Himmler and Hoover dead, Smith in power, about to become the best leader of the American Reich could ever hope for. It's a much more satisfying ending than what we got in the so called finale.

I love the fact that when you rewatch Season 4, you notice that what you might of saw as rivalry between Goertzmann and Smith was really a courting of the two. Basically "we both have enemies, let's be friends"
The end of this season was such a shame. A real disappointment for an otherwise very good season. It really felt rushed towards the end. And here’s the thing... Smith was kinda the show's main character. Season 1 he was the antagonist. Season 2 and 3 he had become an antihero and by season 4 Juliana's arc had been so far relegated to the side, that Smith and Helen were constantly centre stage with the Japanese plot being the next most interesting. The show went out of its way to make clear that John was never a die-hard Nazi. Every deed and decision he’d ever made he’d done for his family. The tragedy of his character was supposed to be that he could only go upwards onto ever more shaky ground, or come crashing down with his wife and kids' fates in the balance. To all of a sudden take a 180 with his character feels so cheap and forced to me. Why is he going full steam ahead with plans for Holocaust.3.0 when he and his family are safe? Because he “didn’t know how” to stop it? Really!? But his mate, Bill, could turn the planes around with a single order and publicly throw away his badge? Not to mention that’s terribly unrealistic for a nation where significant portion of the population are extremely indoctrinated and at least half the top military staff in the American Reich are still die-hard Nazis. This needed another fucking season. We should’ve had John lose his sanity over Thomas and kidnap him. It would’ve made for great storytelling. If the writers wanted to drum up the “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” trope, they could’ve... but not in half a bloody episode! Way to butcher 4 seasons worth of character development in 30 fucking minutes. :(
Indeed perhaps there is another alternate version after the scene maybe he takes His family what’s left of them to the other place in this becomes another ground moment diversion
Authoritarian states also hold their rulers captive , if they ease up on repression they will be killed in a coup or an uprising. They don't have the power to change course on whim.
I mean, the power corrupts absolutely trope with John has been going on for the entire show arguably with John. And at the start of the season, alt-john talks about how he hated himself in the military and what it made him, it strongly implied that John having so much power leads to horrible and grave things.
I loved the show but the last season especially the last episode was so rushed it didn't make any sense in the end. While watching this scene(which is my favourite) I think the writers had plans for another season.
the director i believe was being rushed to finished it because he got commissioned for another project, though normally I don't like this but the next project for him is for a IP that I really love so I'm looking forward to it

Tagomi's extremely early ending - Juliana not even thinking about or asking about Frank and Ed when she made it back to her world - The one year skip at the beginning of the season. But meh, I like the final season, even if it was rushed
I believe that initial intention was to make 5 seasons, so they had to speed up things x2 (which is a shame). Nevertheless, one of the coolest TV series of recent years.
The Tagomi death to me felt like something you’d do if an actor died IRL, it was so out of place.. I wonder what’s the reason behind that because they could’ve at least have him there for one scene if not for some drama or cost cutting
Tagomi was the best character of the fucking show and they killed him off screen. I overall liked Season 4 but that still puts a bitter taste in my mouth.
I know it's based on the novel and all, but I think this show would have been a lot better solely as an alternate history without the alternate universe.

@@arthurmorgan3823 Agreed. Juliana was just a whore who screwed so many people, ruined peoples lives, got people killed and used people to achieve her own goals. Smith had his family, Frank had Ed and Childan. All she did this entire show was use people and by season 3 I hated her greatly.
It appears as though Goertzmann and Smith did more in their military training than simply spend "Years at the military academy just to learn how to hold a knife and fork."
Rufus Sewell is an amazing actor. He was able to portray the character Smith as a complex, conflicted man you could never quite figure out. I think this made the series and Smith was the main character as far as I was concerned. The resistance and Julianna were boring side trips compared to the conflict in Smith's soul. They should have carried this through for the final season or ended it with this episode.
Loved this show but I was very upset that Rommel never appeared nor they never looked into another fascinating aspect. In OTL the reason that Operation Valkyrie was able to go into action by the Anti-Nazi movement inside Germany was the disaster at the front. In this timeline those officers, largely Wehrmacht and Kriegsmarine, would have to keep their hatred of the Nazi’s hidden for decades. The show could’ve established an underground cabal of the Anti-Nazi movement teaming up with the Resistance. I feel this scene could’ve ended even better during the genuine meeting if Rommel had been present, retired as he is, because Himmler wanted his input. Instead the Desert Fox launches his own Anti-Nazi coup in coordination with the Resistance, would that not make an even more brilliant cliff-hanger ending. Just a fade out from Smith’s face his expression set in stone cold shock
Well, if you're name-dropping Rommel, I'm forced to name-drop Michael Wittmann. Although, most of Wittmann's military accomplishments were near the end of the war historically, which this alternative universe never touched on, right?
Rommel is mentioned early in the season as the first reichsmarshall of of north america accepting pattons surrender. i think the only nod to him in this universe sadly
Just no, Secret Germany would be nice but no name dropping Rommel. He liked Hitler. Also the Valkyrie planners were not good people, they were still nazis and believed in the nazi philosophy. They just wanted to end Hitler and the war in the west so they could focus on the Soviet Union and the Slavs/Jews
I literally skipped every Juliana cranes scene in this season only to watch this man . It's such a shame what they did to him. For me he is the protagonist, the one who carried this show.
I really liked SS major general Kreutzmann, he was really fun to watch I wish they had more of him. Damn I missed this show, it’s too bad they ended it like they did but that’s what has been happening a lot lately with really good shows
Fantastic scene. Thoughts on the ending: it's not so much the ending I have a problem with, as how there wasn't a chance for everything that happened between this scene and the last one in episode 10 to be fleshed out. It certainly feels like there was a considerable time gap that would have made a fantastic season 5, with so much content to play with (e.g. Kido with the Yakuza, BCR establishing an independent nation, better understanding inter-dimensional travel, John potentially returning to our world). Sad that a fifth season wasn't ordered.
Amazon was going to cancel the show, so they had to craw two season's worth of content into one, which is why it felt so rushed near the end. Good ideas and a fascinating plotline, but it kinda fell flat due to the time constraints. Still, loved the show overall
They had so much opportunity to dive further into this storyline of Smith ruling America under his terms. I was legitimately surprised when the next episode was queued after this scene. Helen deserved to get an opportunity to see the portal, Childan to see his wife after making deal with the Yakuza, and the resistance getting more time to build an actual militia. I hope the writers fix this by adding one more season, especially when the ending made zero sense
In this episode, its like watching history repeat itself; this is something that happened with the Roman Empire when it was divided into 2 sections, with the West and the East.
@@Spartain14 Just like in our history, the Western Roman Empire collapsed not long after the final divide. I think with how it was looking in America, I think it would have happened the same. Europe is in this case the Eastern Roman Empire and it would survive unlike America, though it will try to reclaim America like the Eatsern Roman Empire did though succeeding only partially before loosing the territory again. I personally think the Nazis in Europe would last much longer than in America but I also think it would collapse too at a later date since America, Japan or even internal political issues like we saw in America could lead to its downfall.
Alexander Anderson Yes but unlike the Roman Empire, in this universe Nazis have accomplished a much more consistent infrastructure, system and economic structure, their army is in good shape and they have no real powerful enemies. This Empire would maybe have collapsed as well, but in a much longer time spam.
@@DavidGonzalez-ff6yk let's not get too picky with the details as it is only just alternative history. However, the Roman Empire, especially the Eastern Empires weakness was internal struggle. I think that internal struggle and political turmoil would most likely cause the collapse of the Third Reich.
@@DavidGonzalez-ff6yk having no more powerful enemies can be a huge threat to any empire that is based on military conquest. Sooner or later, officers get bored and they start trying to leverage their influence on political conflicts. It's what happened in the final days of the Roman Empire, generals started using the command of legions as a political crowbar
If any of this happened in real life I guarantee that the ending of this series would be entirely different. The Japanese got nuked twice and still wanted to continue fighting the war. Really don’t think a couple of minor terrorist attacks would be enough convince the Japanese government to evacuate the pacific states. The Nazis on the other hand were ruthless with indefinite hunger for victory. WW2 they literally fought until the last man was standing. If they were a arms reach away from taking over an entire continent a leadership assassination wouldn’t do anything. Next person in line would step up and take the job. Realistically speaking it would be a divided empire like Rome. More than likely that’s how the story would’ve ended.
Japan was tied down with a war in china. The pacific states provided resources but should have a been a tributary state with a puppet govt not directly under Japans thumb. Japan in OTL had no interest in a occupation of the US they wanted to force the US to the peace table so they could get control of oil supplies.
Japan in real life wouldn't be able to occupy all that territory. Also in history there has been many instances where assassinations and purges worked pretty well just look at Rome. Also Nazi America separating from the German Nazi Reich would make sense since Nazi America is a nuclear armed power of its own reclaiming it would mean nuclear war.
Japan is more ruthless in governing than Nazi German That is why The west did not depict japan as Evil state While Asia Make Hitler Role Model As Idol or inspiration..Hitler and German Army is Really Populer in Asia
Easily the best moment of the entire season I loved every second of this. Also goes to show the writers definitely have favorites seeing as how John is the best developed character in the show. It helps Rufus Sewell was also the best actor in this thing.
I love how Amazon will not openly state that this show was cancelled, yet after 3 solid well thought out seasons, suddenly you get the mess that is season 4 and then it's over.....
This show really took me into its world in the beginning. It was so cool to see an alternative world. It was like learning something new in each episode since you really ARE new to this world as a watcher of the series. Things are different. In the beginning the characters were really interesting. Learning about Joe, John - than stories like Wegeners, where he tried to become a traitor. The thing is, in the beginning each and every story and the plot twists behind them were believeble and made sense. Where in the end it was just like "yeah... oh and John finessed them all btw, they are all dead". Seasons 1-3 were so cool. Even stories like the romance between Joe and Nicole Dörmer. It really gave you an inside of what living in this world was like, not because it was massively relevant to the story, but that was what made that show for me. Epicness of seeing those huge Nazi-monuments in Berlin like the Volkshalle and than of course the replacement of the statue of liberty. Those were great scenes. This show really had something utterly unique to it. Seeing further Nazi-technology like the plains or the VTOL ships. The cinematic shots that it had were awesome. And than season 4 came. Season 3 was getting kinda meh with them writing Tagomi out of the story but it was still good, nothing to complain about that much, but than that damn fourth season came... Lets keep it short; wokeness killed this series. BCR appearing, wearing not only plot-armour but rather sitting in a plot-deathstar. BCR: "Dude lets plant some bombs to give them a hard time" Japanese empire: "Nah, fuck america ... we fought the biggest war of all time to make it here and culturized half of the US but nah, lets get out of here" On the other side of the story - the portal bunker was unconquerable as Himmler stated but apparently some para-military resistance warriors are able to storm it all in like half an hour. This is the most disappointing end of a series that Ive ever watched. Game of Thrones was rushed and I was not satisfied at all but THIS ... I wasnt even disappointed, I was just sad. We knew that it would come since the only thing that season 4 was lacking was the lgbtq-resistance-rainbow army riding down to Berlin on unicorns but come on. What a great show it was in the beginning and how much potential it had before things turned sideways somewhere in season 3. For me, they couldve left out the whole parallel-universe sci-fi stuff. I just liked the scenario of the axis having won WW2 and seeing the outcome of it all. Things like Joes father designing that damm that was supposed to be built across the mediterranean sea. I was looking forward to see Africa and Europe as 3. Reich versions. Like I said in the first few sentences - viewing things that arent from our world. But they killed that idea quickly and the show went to shit. I dont know man, such waste. *mic drop*
Your comment honestly speaks for pretty much how I felt about his whole series when I watched it a few months ago. This series was one of my favorite tv shows ever when I watch the first two seasons. I genuinely believe that if Amazon gave the series 1 or 2 more seasons and Frank Spotnitz didn’t leave the show, this series would have been legendary.
History has shown before, that when a major empire splits up, the individual remnants at one point will end up fighting each other. Sad that they didn't Explore this.
First time watching this tv show in 2021 and binge watched all four seasons within a few weeks and wow I’ve never thought I’d feel so much empathy towards a nazi, John smith was amazing father and only wanted the best for his family. To see to sides to every coin makes a person question there own decisions in life for what could have been
I loved this scene. It was scary in many ways the power dynamic shifts. But in a single stroke it was functionally two autonomous entities within the same Empire.
The whole premise of the Axis powers winning ww2 is brilliant. The ultimate what if scifi story. Kudos to Phillip K Dick for imagining this, and to the markers of this TV Series to stay true to his vision. And how about that eerily haunting version of Edelweiss as the theme song.
There was not a single moment in this series that Smith was not working some kind of angle. A truly devious and devilish man and great series character.
I really wished Amazon had dumped a little more money into the show for a 5th season. This episode just hyped everything up to the max and the last episode just kinda screwed things up. If this had been the ending to Season 4 and then Season 5 came along to wrap things up it would've been fantastic. John's story being revealed about how he only joined the Reich to save his family and slowly climb the ranks to ensure their safety while never being a true Nazi was great. It would've been so much more satisfying if he had been the one to get rid of the Nazi ideals and return America to it's former glory after taking power. Bill mentions the nuclear Arsenal that America had access to so if America went to war against Berlin in a fight for the restoration of America, then that would've made an amazing Season 5. Instead, he goes full steam ahead for another round of the Holocaust which feels totally backwards from the development of his entire character. Maybe he could go to war with the west and take control of the neutral zone and the west coast and THEN restore America or he could just forget those entirely and restore what he already has control over. Just going Hitler 2.0 wasn't great storytelling. I guess the actual ending to the show wasn't awful, but it could've been so much better. Basically, if I could have it my way it would be: 1) End Season 4 with the coup 2) Season 5 is about John rejecting Nazi ideals and restoring America back to itself again 3) Either John captures the Neutral Zone and the West Coast or just crushes the BCR and friends and forgets about them 4) When John starts to restore America, Berlin gets angry and war happens 5) Ending determines whether John succeeds or fails in the end Sorry for the long essay I just love this show so much LOL
That's REALLY good cinematography. Smith is struggling while Hoover just stands there motionless, taking his killing. The supposed victor portraying weakness.
One of the best scenes in the entire series. I am as surprised as you guys are at how Smith and his loyal agents took control. Smith certainly earned my respect. #HailSmith
I know it's like the main part of the show, but I dont think this show would suffer much if the fantastical portal/universes just weren't apart of the plot. If it was literally just an alternate world plain and simple and John was more of a conflicted protagonist.
This show, right up through this scene, made you realize empathize with Smith, a fucking Nazi. That's not a small feat. After season one, where he is the antagonist, he becomes the main character in the second season (which was by far the best) and you really begin to sympathize with his willingness to do anything to keep his family safe. And season three and four make it clear that although he has lost himself in the Nazi order, that he was clearly never a devoted Nazi. I'm not sure Smith needed a "redemption arc" and (for obvious reasons) I can see why the writers would have hesitated to give him one, but he deserved a more concrete end of his story than 'Sorry wife, I just don't know how to stop the mass murder of millions of people' even after he has succeeded in making his family untouchable and his word is essentially law. And this came only a handful of episodes after he was in tears talking to the Alt version of his Jewish friend in the Alt-verse, apologizing for letting him die. How could that Smith return to his universe and instantly start planning to build more death camps? Obviously the show was fucked up by Amazon 'lite-cancelling' the show, and just telling the team to wrap it up, but it ruined 4 seasons of character development of Smith. Hell, I feel like if they at least told them 4 was the last season from the get-go, they could have written Smith to start to appear MORE fanatically Nazi than we ever thought, showing the audience that he was too far gone. Like, how do you include the season with his Jewish friend and expect us to believe he then wants to murder a few million more Jews? Shouldn't he have, like, spat in the guys face if he "doesn't know how to stop?" But it honestly feels like they had filmed 90% of the season and then some bureaucrat popped his head in the door and said "Uh, guys, the shows cancelled, so... like, can you shoot a few more scenes and just wrap it up?" And I won't even get into the last scene with the portal. Unintelligible nonsense. So disappointing.
Great scene for sure, put the element of surprise into the show like hell. Nevertheless, I am the only one wondering why only 5 guards stationed front of Himmler room? How Smith was able to put his own men into Berlin's most securely guarded building?
I loved this scene. The last one I liked. I wish it ended like this. After everything that John Smith survived such an unsatisfactory ending for his character.
It is the fate of all Empires to eventually split, either through agreement or more often through catastrophic failure. Some fail multiple times in a revolving cycle of order and chaos like the Chinese for example.

Damn this scene depicts the analytical and persuasive mind of Jon Smith. His approach to tackle the direst of situations makes him a formidable person to reckon with. I love the fact that when you rewatch Season 4, you notice that what you might of saw as rivalry between Goertzmann and Smith was really a courting of the two. Basically "we both have enemies, let's be friends"
‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend’
As I said...they messed with John's arc in the end.
Authoritarian states also hold their rulers captive , if they ease up on repression they will be killed in a coup or an uprising. They don't have the power to change course on whim.
Bill DeBerger Exactly. Making Bill's actions even more nonsensical.

Tagomi didn't die, his true master Shao Khan ordered him to prepare an invasion of the Nebenwelten.

It appears as though Goertzmann and Smith did more in their military training than simply spend "Years at the military academy just to learn how to hold a knife and fork."
He really fit the role perfectly. John Smith is just a badass. The uniform looks cool af too
Rufus Sewell is an amazing actor.
The piano riff from Verrater that comes back as they're dividing the Reich makes this scene. Talk about an amazing musical motif
Rommel wasn’t anti-Nazi. He was very close to Hitler and there was no evidence he was actually involved in the July 20 Plot.
this entire season is a joke, had nothing to do with the story for the previous 3 seasons.

In this episode, its like watching history repeat itself; this is something that happened with the Roman Empire when it was divided into 2 sections, with the West and the East.
If the series had ended here. What do you think would have happened down the line?
Yeah, but in real life Germany wouldn’t bother trying invade or control America. The suspense of disbelief is already stretched out way too far.
No empire lasts forever, ever.
Japan is more ruthless in governing than Nazi German
That is why The west did not depict japan as Evil state While Asia Make Hitler Role Model As Idol or inspiration..Hitler and German Army is Really Populer in Asia

This final episode was one of the most mind-blowing cliffhanger I've ever seen!!
BCR: "Dude lets plant some bombs to give them a hard time"
Japanese empire: "Nah, fuck america ... we fought the biggest war of all time to make it here and culturized half of the US but nah, lets get out of here"
On the other side of the story - the portal bunker was unconquerable as Himmler stated but apparently some para-military resistance warriors are able to storm it all in like half an hour.
*mic drop*

Basically, if I could have it my way it would be:
1) End Season 4 with the coup
2) Season 5 is about John rejecting Nazi ideals and restoring America back to itself again
3) Either John captures the Neutral Zone and the West Coast or just crushes the BCR and friends and forgets about them
4) When John starts to restore America, Berlin gets angry and war happens
5) Ending determines whether John succeeds or fails in the end
Sorry for the long essay I just love this show so much LOL

It would be perfect if the show ended in this scene.
I know it's like the main part of the show, but I dont think this show would suffer much if the fantastical portal/universes just weren't apart of the plot. If it was literally just an alternate world plain and simple and John was more of a conflicted protagonist.

1:44 when you’re in class and you’re about to fart.
the way that he was positioning him to stand so he can look him dead in the eyes is COLD BLOODED
Shouldn't he have, like, spat in the guys face if he "doesn't know how to stop?" But it honestly feels like they had filmed 90% of the season and then some bureaucrat popped his head in the door and said "Uh, guys, the shows cancelled, so... like, can you shoot a few more scenes and just wrap it up?"
And I won't even get into the last scene with the portal. Unintelligible nonsense. So disappointing.
2 power brokers after a flawless bloodletting. Mr. Dick probably enjoyed this bit of cinematography!
This was the ending in season 4 for me. Such a cool and great scene that would be ideal for a season ending or even series ending.
What's the name of the ost that is played at 1:57?

Great scene for sure, put the element of surprise into the show like hell.
Nevertheless, I am the only one wondering why only 5 guards stationed front of Himmler room?
How Smith was able to put his own men into Berlin's most securely guarded building?
I loved this scene. The last one I liked. I wish it ended like this. After everything that John Smith survived such an unsatisfactory ending for his character.
So It basically became West and East German Empire, History Repeats its self.
I think you mean the Roman Empire.
What
@@daru5002 The Roman Empire split into two.
It is the fate of all Empires to eventually split, either through agreement or more often through catastrophic failure. Some fail multiple times in a revolving cycle of order and chaos like the Chinese for example.
I just noticed that as he hands the knife back to Goetzmann, he turns the blade inward on himself to show trust.
In all respects Hoover worked diligently for his bosses and did a job quite well. I would have hired Hoover considering he would have nowhere else to go. Sun Tzu tactic in a sense.
A divided 1960s retro-futuristic Nazi empire political drama is so much cooler than what the show turned out to be
Have this be the ending
Forget episode 10 completely
I wish they didn’t end the season so fast I would have loved to see some more geo politics progression and story line.
