  • We just finished the French way Camino de Santiago . I suppose as a way to process what we had just completed we decided to start a new camino starting in Porto Portugal. There are 3 routes one can take. The Litoral route which closely follows the actual sea shore, the Coastal route which is a bit more inland but does brush up against the coast at time and the Central route which as the name implies is more inland.
We explore all three to get a sense of what each is like. Since we completed the journey to Santiago we are more interested in having an idea of the Portugal Caminos than in actually getting all the way to Santiago

Do you recommend starting from Matisinhos or Labruge?

Labruge for sure! If you start in Matisinhos you still have to get over the long bridge and everything around there is big industrial. It's a sea, inland commercial port and nothing but industry. You can take a bus from Porto but go to Labruge. That's a small seaside village with not a lot of accommodations. But you are on a real coast and can walk on the boardwalk which is quite pleasant. Be prepared as depending on the beaches you will run into development even after Labruge . Eventually we gave up on the Litoral route and worked our way to the Coastal Route.
BTW you asked the correct question. I wish someone would have warned me about the 1st section. Also get the Uber app as Uber is very convenient and really quite cheap for the service. That way if you hit an unpleasant area just skip that area. There are better ways to suffer
