    Just for those who don't know, ackee & saltfish doesn't need any powdered seasonings on it, salt and black pepper do just fine with the vegetable seasoning such as onions, scallion and such. To be honest even the black pepper is optional especially since u already hv the scotch bonnet pepper. This therefore means that Mike's special blend was optional, it isn't a necessary ingredient so for those who might want to try preparing this dish u don't really need to add any other powder seasoning other than salt (and or) black pepper.

      I don't even need the salt fish sometimes, just a lot of tomatoes, onions and thyme with a very nice flavored hot pepper. Bell peppers for me is optional just for color since they don't do much in terms of flavor and taste.
      By the way, use coconut oil to get the best results.

      Hopefully RUclips will keep my comment up. I have seen numerous ackee trees in Miami. It seems as though the residents who have them, are not in a hurry to pick them, and use them. Once I also got a little seedling from a gentleman. A Jamaican neighbor in Miami, I brought it to Tampa, but it did not survive. Possibly because I didn't know or have the time to care for it, to nurture it. So it didn't survive. I have a friend here in Tampa, that grows it in her backyard. I get it twice a year at least, from her.

    This is why i always watch your videos with an open mind. You never fail me yet.
    What you said about it not being poisonous is true but im going to add to that a bit.
    One of the main reasons why you hear many people say its poisonous is because of unscrupulous people who pick green/young ackee and slit it open and sell it when its extra poisonous sometimes they will mix it with the open one to fool you. So im sure you have heard to never buy force open ackee those are the deadly ones. Thats why you hear that its just precaution and why people have their own vendors they buy ackee from.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 года назад +3

      Yep, you're absolutely right! And one more thing - sometimes people fail to see the tiny black seeds in "baby ackee" and they get into food. However, these cases are quite rare. Most serious cases come from various countries in West Africa, where ackee isn't eaten, but children there sometimes pick them unripe or eat the seeds unfortunately.

      @powertoolfreak good point but this is not 100% guaranteed. There are some vendors only looking to make a quick buck and will have both open and unopen ackee mixed together in hopes of making a money. So even if i do buy them i pick them myself and not the vendor. Any that look forced open i toss one side and even tell the vendor. Thats if i go somewhere new to buy ackee

    I think kids should learn the truth about whatever from early on in life if we want to de-spell myths. I learned all i need to know about Ackee from the age of 6 onwards. How to climb the tree, pick the fruits, clean them, spread the seeds to grow new plants and so much more. I taste raw ackee a few times but didn't really like it, however, I know a 4 years old girl who loves to eat raw ackee and never once mistakenly tried to eat the unfit fruits. This is is because she was educated on what is good and what was not from very early. By telling your kids that the raw ackee is poisoned, they will tell a friend who will tell a friend which continue to spread the rumors that we are here trying to get rid of.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 года назад +9

      It's true, but think of it this way: you tell your child the truth and he/she will eat raw ackee safely, BUT then tell another child that it's ok to eat raw ackee "see, I do it and it's ok!", but will not explain the details - that kid tells other kid.. and risk is that some child would end up eating unripe ackee. I personally think that it's better to teach the truth at start, but it has to be done properly, so the child won't spread the info with other kids.

    Ive never thought of removing the skin before boiling it. And, Usually i boil it 3 times, that is, put in water and bring it to a boil. Pour that water off, add fresh water and boil again.
    This is what i do when im only cooking salt fish.
    I boil the salt fish one time less when its being done with achee or broad beans.
    Try adding some curry to your achee and salt fish dish.

    • @trevorsteer7331
      @trevorsteer7331 3 года назад +8

      Another way to remove the excess salt is to soak it overnight (sometimes a couple nights). This avoids overcooking it by doing multiple boiling.

    • @mnqolivia
      @mnqolivia 3 года назад +1

      I used to boil my salt fish but switched to soaking. I have found that soaking the salt fish overnight rehydrates the fish nicely and it ends up plumper and more juicy than when I boil it. It is a completely different texture compared to when it is boiled.

      Oh, wow, how old were you? The treatment of ackee poisoning is actually hospitalization with a lot of liquids, they treat the symptoms. Can't imagine why they would have had a surgery done due to poisoning, maybe it was long time ago when they didn't know how to treat poisoning, hm. I also wonder if you had such a serious case because you are allergic to ackee? 🤔

    • @Tadrian4084
      @Tadrian4084 3 года назад +1

      @@JAMAICAWITHIRIE I don’t actually remember my age at that time, but I was in grade 2 in primary school. All I remember was i was playing in the yard and was eat green almond fruit all day, just eating the outside portion of the fruit, not cracking the inner core and eating the nuts itself. So that day we had ackee and salt fish for dinner and the next thing I remember was vomiting blood and ended up in the ER. They remove apart of my intestines that went dead. Soooooo!!!!!! up until this day I have a huge allergic reaction once Ackee touches my mouth. You know how the almonds are in Jamaica right?

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 года назад +1

      @@Tadrian4084 yeah, looks like the didn't know how to treat poisoning back in the day. Green almonds are ok to eat if they are ripe (as far as I know, it's ok for both: the outer fruit part and the almond itself). Not sure about unripe almonds. Seems you're allergic, but allergy doesn't usually cause vomiting, so it might have been ackee poisoning if they were cooked unripe or seeds got in. 🤔Sucks! Sorry that happened in your childhood!

      @powertoolfreak That's a very wise person. I came home with exactly 2 suitcases. 1 with my desktop, laptop, printer and office supplies and one with clothes. I left everything else in America. Took pity on a family who cry homeless, a veteran family at that. Let them stay at our home furnished with the agreement that they'll pay the rent. Less than 2 months they sold off alllll our furniture for crack money and the apartment evicted us since the lease was in our names. Though we were in Jamaica and with covid no fights was leaving so there was nothing we could do. When the apartment but out the garbage they left, a friend ran there to grab whatever little she could in terms of our personal stuff like pictures. My brother we lost everything. In trying to help we lost it all . But no one to blame but myself. Spirit or my inner voice told me to sell the furniture and give up the apartment but I didn't listen. If I had done that I could have come home with a good couple thousand dollars in my pocket instead of the $600 dollars I came home with. But sir we rebuilding here and sooooooooo happy we are HOME.

    In the USA where I live, I get my Saltfish from a Produce Store, and it is sold in Halves and Dried; also, it is NOT frozen, so it is very very salted to preserve it. So I soak it it overnight to remove the excess salt. I purchase the Ackee in cans, found in one of my local Kroger's, or from (you guessed it), Amazon.
    Made some Ackee & Saltfish just last week, with Fried Dumpling. The dumpling was made with Coconut Milk (something I learned from another You Tube VLOG). Some people mix the flour with regular milk also. Trust me, if you try either of these methods, would never mix flour with plain water again, when making Fried Dumplings

    Irina, RESPEK!
    In all my decades on this earth, and being a voracious lover of ackee, neither I nor anyone I know have ever been poisoned, or know of someone whose been poisoned by ackee. NEVER!
    Ackee has unjustifiably gotten a raw (no pun intended) deal. I tried a wee bit of the raw fruit as a very young child because I saw a peer eating it all the time uncooked. Once was good enough for me. I didn't like it raw, however I never got sick, nor had my peer ever gotten sick from eating it raw, as you did.
    There's very slim chance that an unsupervised, small child will be sickened from eating the closed unripened fruit, because accessing it will not be an easy task. If an intelligent adult chooses to pick/harvest a closed up, unripened fruit to consume it, he or she will suffer the consequences of doing so.
    Great research on the health properties and benefits. It just reinforces my profound love for ackee.
