This was the golden age for games...hardware tricks, programming savvy and sheer artistic expression. Now, I'm not saying that there are not any good games or systems out today but, the 16bit era may not ever be matched again for the awesomeness that it was.
Stellar skills man. I literally just finished playing this game and after a few weeks finally conquered it. Identifying Dracula's pattern was especially difficult, took me a good 30 times to figure it out (if not more). Learned a lot by watching you play, specifically some of the whip usage I didn't realize could be so convenient and powerful. Two thumbs up.
The game is very solid in all aspects. I am not a fan of the steerable jump and I wish they had worked harder on the sub weapon aspect of the game particularly when swinging. The bosses are not as hard as in the very first in the series and the final boss battle is a bit antic climactic considering the build up with that theme song. The graphics are not the best in a Castlevania game but when combined with the otherworldly soundtrack it blends seamlessly. The atmosphere and music? Well..... The opening screen with the CV logo descending with that impossible music makes me think there is no way this OST will ever be topped. This music is Castlevania, not SOTN which is excellent, COD and LOI were great and I love Yamane, not LOS even though Oscar did an awesome job with that score. No this game musically speaking nailed it. I mean right through the heart, take out the very same nail, put it in the coffin set it on fire and spit on the coffin, crotch grab, chest bump, DX chop, jazz hands and give it the finger. I don't see how this music will ever be outdone. Masanori Adachi and Taro Kudo owned this bitch.
haha totally agree on the music and that intro...almost spit out my coffee with the description at the end LOL I feel the same way also about Super Metroid. Games today do not come close to them...
I really loved this video. Thank you so much for posting this. I was looking for some Castlevania 4 gameplay but this was more than what I expected. I'm like re-living my childhood experience here. Thanks again! >.
I had been trying to finish this game for over 15 years... Last night, I finally defeated Dracula. Now that I got closure I can say I really and truly love this game... Ah, the memories...
By far the best Castlevania ever made... And oh yeah, Contra 4 the alien wars was the best contra ever too. Snes really had cutting edge sound and graphics... that even the sound at least still sounds good today. It still captivates me to hear this music. It made you drown yourself in the game.
Never could make it past Death in this one. Funny how easy it looks, now. I haven't tried to get through this in years; seems like my skills for this sucker only got worse with time. Last time I played I didn't even get past the room with the sawblades underneath. Anyway, well played!
Ok maybe Im a bit harsh. I doubt hes played the game half as much as I did. I loved the 8-way whip...Hes barely using the hanging chain to attack enemies below him. Theres no fines. I had the game mapped out, had style. Thats when games were harder, less forgiving. You played this game, you were playing with the very gods of gaming! Near perfection! Look at all the"unnecessary" enemies that pop up, can you say a game has tried this hard since then, and got it near 100% right? Amazing to this day
Another history lesson here. It was named "Super" because it was made for the "Super" Nintendo. During that era, the "Super" NES was a really big deal, and there were other games as well with the "super" moniker. "Super" R-Type for example.
Right before you fight Dracula, there's a secret on the last set of ascending stairs, take a leap of faith jump {full jump} off the last stairs, to get full health and 99 hearts.
Cool vid! I've actually been thinking about putting up a vid myself. I have about a %50 success rate of beating the game without dying. The parts that get me are the disappearing boxes on level 8 (random) and that one jump you have to do on level B (you know the one). You can do it a bit quicker because I have a weird compulsion for whipping every single candle and it takes me a little longer to beat the bosses.
This game has the best OST i have heard till today. I wonder why modern games or just plainly 99% of all games even released, have bullshit, unengaging, generic kinds of music.
***** I agree, however there is nothing fast-paced in Castlevania 4, it feels quite slow compared to other classic castlevanias, that's why i'm not too crazy about it.
they need to remake this one on pc and consoles...it will be worth the wait and money..only doing this 1. using unreal engine 2. same music with newer sound quality 3. same storyline. 4. i dunno if 3rd or first person would be a problem
no 3d. 2d is timeless. Look @ Samus returns vs AMR, AMR I prefer more, it looks way more detailed & varied. Side scrollers are on the money as far as gameplay. Once you go 3d something is lost. I still dont care for games such as metroid prime, Breath of the wild etc...
this game would've been the undisputed best castlevania if they kept the difficulty closer to cv1 and 3. skeletons should've been more relentless like the original and bone pillars should've stayed like in the nes games where they were an actual threat.
SomaSaysMeep While Nintendo 64 games had fair share of flaws, they still were much more Castlevanias in spirit than some generic anime-rip off about japanese school boy, who is somehow Dracula.

That's why it's now considered the golden age of gaming.
How someone can pack so much atmosphere and character into one game...phenomenal.
crazy how i know most of the game and every track played on this beautiful game
For me is the best one, considering that it was one of the first games on SNES, in my opinion Konami did great work in the beginning of SNES life
Best Castlevania and one of the best games ever!

I remember really enjoying the graphics on the map itself.
I really loved this video. Thank you so much for posting this. I was looking for some Castlevania 4 gameplay but this was more than what I expected. I'm like re-living my childhood experience here. Thanks again! >.
25:32 God i remember this area. The music was so ominous for me when i was kid. one of the best areas and music in the game.
This is by far the best Castlevania
Besides Castlevania on N64, right?
It is indeed.
Besides Symphony of the Night!
Nah,SoTN is hands down the best. This one provides a better challenge though.
Comparision between this games is the case, when the less is more: Symphony has more content, but SCV4 is more refined and interesting experience.
Very touching description, it's good to read people's writings about games they love.
One of my favorite Castlevania games as a kid. ;)
Thank you for the kind words.
If I remember correctly, it took me 5 attempts to record this "no death" run.
I had been trying to finish this game for over 15 years...
Last night, I finally defeated Dracula. Now that I got closure I can say I really and truly love this game...
Ah, the memories...
This game, SOTN and Castlevania 3 are ths best ones. At least in this one you can whip in any direction.
Block 9 is my weakness. That bridge with the vanishing blocks and the spears always gets me. Or the battle with the Monster.
By far the best Castlevania ever made... And oh yeah, Contra 4 the alien wars was the best contra ever too. Snes really had cutting edge sound and graphics... that even the sound at least still sounds good today. It still captivates me to hear this music. It made you drown yourself in the game.
i love the doodly-doo thing you do with the whip. it's actually really effective lol
Damn you got all those bonuses in a single run, too bad I'm 5 to 7 years too late...nice game play btw
Bonuses?
Thanks for the kind words.
@@ShadowSumac no problem buddy
The music of this game is spectacular! awesome!
Nice game play. I also love CSOTN. Great video.
Beast mode from beginning to end you truly are a legend in your own right.
Gee...I embarassed. Thank you.
come on dude most people even now can barely finish the game let alone do it with out dying lol.
SCV4 is not that hard. Now, Akumajou Dracula 68K is another story...))
I do agree with this but I still have a few friends that have never seen the inside of Dracula's castle lol.....
Yeah, that happens sometimes.
Muy buen comentario amigo, comparto todo lo que dices sobre este juego. La verdad es que es maravilloso, y sobre todo su musica. ahhhh.
Never could make it past Death in this one. Funny how easy it looks, now. I haven't tried to get through this in years; seems like my skills for this sucker only got worse with time. Last time I played I didn't even get past the room with the sawblades underneath.
Anyway, well played!

I still have my cart. Awesome run!
Thanks.
Just started the video. Gonna grab some snacks and we're all set.
Love this game!
My pleasure!!
Right before you fight Dracula, there's a secret on the last set of ascending stairs, take a leap of faith jump {full jump} off the last stairs, to get full health and 99 hearts.
OFC , that game is badass from 90's..
and i played it in '95 ;)
I miss the days when Nintendo was this awesome. Nowadays we're lucky to get ANY third-party support for Nintendo
Bayonetta 2? o_o
I'm talking about multiplats *facepalm
DanTheMan33088 Blame the other companies that do the same.
@ 21:10 hmmmmm,wonder why THAT looks familiar? Oh yeah,Super Ghouls N Ghosts......lol

Oh man thoses were the days
dracula badass boss and that grim reaper
This game has the best OST i have heard till today. I wonder why modern games or just plainly 99% of all games even released, have bullshit, unengaging, generic kinds of music.
***** Quite a stupid opinion, in my opinion. But as some other unpleasant things, it has right to exist.
***** I agree, however there is nothing fast-paced in Castlevania 4, it feels quite slow compared to other classic castlevanias, that's why i'm not too crazy about it.
Marcel Weber I feel like some people played this game on emulator on a bad hardware. This is the only case, when it can feel slow.
This was around the time games started to not be just "games",huh??They actually started to develop into stories featuring game characters,am I right?
they need to remake this one on pc and consoles...it will be worth the wait and money..only doing this 1. using unreal engine 2. same music with newer sound quality 3. same storyline. 4. i dunno if 3rd or first person would be a problem

XD cada vez que acaba con un jefe mueve el latigo, excelente.
What a good game
luv this game

@ThrobnWood help! I went to site, when I click the download link on my iPhone it just plays the audio but doesn't save it...what am I doing wrong?
I MISS THIS CASTLEVANIA. NOW I'M PLAYING LOS 2
Lol correct... I was thinking 4 becasue of this Castlevania video
How would it have been unfair? You were already fully powered up. All you would have gotten is more points, plus it would have looked cooler.
I think Aria of Sorrow was the best Castlevania game.
Well..you guess WRONG!!Just kidding, all the Castlevania games are pretty awesome.
Not all. The Nintendo 64 ones were crap.
SomaSaysMeep While Nintendo 64 games had fair share of flaws, they still were much more Castlevanias in spirit than some generic anime-rip off about japanese school boy, who is somehow Dracula.
Soma being Dracula reborn as a human was an awesome plot twist. That was what made AoS such an amazing game.
For some. For others - it was a very strange asspull. Not to mention the rest of the game aesthetics.
21:00 i dies 100 times in this room ^^
You were already 100% and barely used your other weapons. Definitely would have been cooler.
Check us out, let me know if you're interested and we'll take this further.
I guess so?
1:07:57 SHIT GOT REAL...
Post it, I'd love to see that rather than seeing all this baseless shit talk
BTW when I did my speed runs, I did it alot better, this guy stops or pauses, I never stopped, and he gets hit, lol. Amateurs.
Well done!
Thank you.
