H-3 Airstrike - The Most Famous Airstrike of the Iran-Iraq War

- During the Iran-Iraq War, both sides launched many airstrikes against each other's airbases. But one of these airstrikes really stands out - the Iranian attack on the Iraqi H-3 airbase complex. Why is that so? Because H-3 is located in the extreme West of Iraq, well outside of range of Iranian F-4 Phantoms. Yet, Iranians found a way to refuel their strike aircraft in foreign airspace. How effective was the airstrike really and what is the Iraqi version of it? Find out in this video.

Some assets in this reenactment are not 100 percent accurate. As there are no KC-747 tankers in DCS, they were approximated by a regular 747-400 Jumbo Jet. Also, the specific version of the F-4E and its equipment doesn't necessarily reflect the versions used by Iran. And finally, the Iraqi airspace in the central region of the country was well defended but not exactly populated 😁I only noticed that this sentence didn't make sense after uploading the video. There are also some technical imperfections caused by my editing software acting a bit silly. I apologize for everything and thank you for your understanding!
Fun fact, there's a movie made about this strike.
Israël did similar in 1 St october 1985 with opération Mivtza Régel Etz on Tunisia PLO HQ. Used only différents F15 and kc707 for this méditerranéean raid
@@dominiqueroudier9401 I received quite a lot of suggestions for that video. I think they used F-15Ds with LGBs, that was my main problem for the reenactment.

Wow, didn't know about this attack. Iranians did exceptionally good, great planing and good strategy with their tankers and their "fake flight routes". Such a nice video!!!
this operation , which know as the H3 attack, accoding to experts could have been the largest , most complex and longest operation in world , which eight phantom F4 fighter planes participated
The pilots who brought that F4 back from Syria were Mahmoud Eskandari and Mohammad Javanmardi
Mahmoud Eskandari, a former member of the Imperial Iranian Air Force, continued to serve the Islamic Revolution after the Islamist coup of 1979. However, in 1987, he was arrested by the Islamic regime for supporting the Iranian monarchy. Though they did not kill him, he was sentenced to four years in prison and expelled from the Air Force. Eskandari was killed in a suspicious car accident in 2001, and his burial was conducted under strict control by Islamic regime agents. It is widely believed that he was murdered by the regime.

The Iranians apparently knew the weakness of the Syrian air defense radar network in eastern Syria. This was a well planned and highly effective air strike, you can see early on in that war the difference in training and professionalism between the Iranian and Iraqi military personnel. If Saddam would have attacked Iran while the Shaw was in power, Iraq would still be under Iranian occupation today.
That's why Saddam didn't attack before the Revolution :) Training and professionalism makes all the difference, as shown in this example.
Syrians actually supported Iran in the war, they even supplied weapons like Scuds and training to the Iranians, they probably allowed the strike but refrained from further strikes to not be alienated more by the Gulf Arabs.

Thank you for this feedback! Yes, there will certainly be more content based on the F-4E. A bunch of us creators was given an early access (although not too early).
@@showtime112 Speaking of the content on RUclips, many times I saw Phantoms sporting Vietnam-era camouflage loaded with what seem to me -9L missiles. Could you tell me what weapons are available in the module? Do we get older Sidewinders/Sparrows?
@@i.setyawan There are older AIM-7 and AIM-9 variants. There are for example AIM-7E and F. As for the Sidewinders, there's B and several 'P' models.
@@showtime112: Yes. However, the F-4 Phantom also needs the Vietnam War era Sidewinder variants:
AIM-9D Sidewinder (USN) - upgraded B
AIM-9E Sidewinder (USAF) - upgraded B
AIM-9F Sidewinder (Luftwaffe) - upgraded B
AIM-9G Sidewinder (USN) - upgraded D
AIM-9H Sidewinder (USN) - upgraded G
AIM-9J Sidewinder (USAF) - upgraded E
Of these, the AIM-9H and AIM-9J were the best and most reliable, but only arrived at the very end of the Vietnam War. The vast majority of Vietnam Sidewinder kills were made with the AIM-9B (26) and AIM-9D (41).
@@timonsolus True. Also, it would be cool to have the AIM-4 Falcon. Some F-4Es carried them (such as the one in the reenactment I'm working on now)
Very accurate explained also Iran has made movie of this mission ( attack on H3 )
But story of single f4 which landed in palmira Syria , it’s more horrific than H3 cuz it took 2 months to fix the airplane and mean while Iran sent 2 professional pilot to syria to bring it back !! Unfortunately Syria intelligent advised to iraqs intelligent about the flight pattern and time of flight . More than 20 Iraqis migs were patrolling over the turkey ; syria and Iraq borders to intercept f4 !! But Iranian pilots were so smart and instead of taking that pattern, they decided to fly across the the country of Iraq at a altitude of 50 feet from the ground with supersonic speed and reach Iran and they succeeded.
The Iranian Air Force (lacking spare parts for their planes and etc) flew 4,000 miles and significantly damaged the H3 base, destroying at least 34-40 Iraqi planes. The Israeli Air Force attacked the same base three times, but despite only having to cover 30% of the distance the Iranians flew, they were not as successful in causing damage during their attacks as the Iranian Air Force did during just one attack.
This operation is one of a kind in the history.

It is relatively well known mission with the aircraft simulator players and probably with real life military pilots as well. Outside of those circles the issue becomes who did the raid as Iran did not at the time and even today have the best relationship with Western powers, so any of their heroic feats they performed during the Iran-Iraq War where memory holed due to that.

Mighty lords of Asgard, in the movie they made it look like the wounded Phantom just broke formation and dashed for iranian airspace, landing on a civilian road just past the border running on fumes, i had no idea Syria was backing Iran to such extent, no wonder Iran worked so hard to pay them back during the civil war 🤯

That is the movie version :) As for the Syrians, it seems like they didn't knowingly participate in this. Iranians kinda tricked them but Syrians weren't too upset about it 😁 There was a sentence in the text explaining that Syria had good relationship with Iran and tense with Iraq but it got mistakenly dropped in the editing.
True. Syria was a rare Arab country with good relations with Iran. As for Iraq, they weren't very friendly.

This mission never ever repeated around the world 🌎
Wow that was a suicidal plan. I saw a documentary about how they air refueled 6 times at 300 feet which is a big no no.
There were four aerial refuels and not exactly at 300 feet but still extremely low.
Pure genius 👌🏻
There is also an Iranian movie called "The Attack on H3 (1995)" about this strike.
Beside being a daring operations over enemy territory, a lot of things were done which were not in the books and never will .Such as refueling at less than 1000 feet of altitude by a 747 !!! Also the holding pattern area for the 747's were so tight (to remain in Syrian air space and not Iraqis) that they had to make 45-50 degree bank in altitude of less than 1000 feet while waiting for the Phantoms to arrive and during the refueling. Well done boys. You deserve to be in every book written about aerial warfare but unfortunately what you did remains to be relatively obscured in the west.
On February 1981 the operation actually was supposed to be done by 12 F-4Es and the Phantoms even entered the Iraqi airspace but due this fact that you mentioned (low clouds) they bombed a refinery in Zakho city when they were returning to Iran which got completely destroyed and I've even heard from Mohammad Javanmardi who was involved in the both flights as a WSO and in the process of returning the damaged F-4 alongside Mahmoud Eskandari that the refinery was burning for a very long time, maybe around one month and it got shutdown completely after that flight.
Great video!

Couple months later, Saddam accused the Syrian president of betraying the Arabs because he colluded with the Iranians to launch their attack from Palmyra Airport to bomb Al-Waleed Airport (H3).
According to Saddam, the Iraqi leadership was initially certain that the raid was Israeli. After it became clear that the raid was Iranian, the airport commander, who was a colonel, committed suicide because he felt humiliated by his inability to anticipate or respond to the raid.

Excellent mission planning. Have to wonder if the mission planners and pilots were trained in the US? Probably at Luke AFB AZ. Just wondering also what advantage H3 was to the Iraqi AF? If it was too far for F-4's which have a lot longer range than any of the Soviet fighter types what advantage did it give Iraq if they also couldn't conduct operations from H3 to Iran?
It is very certain that mission planners were trained in the USA, or at least by US personnel in Iran. As for the Iraqis deploying their aircraft to H3, it looks like they were launching from H-3, then landing at bases closer to Iran, refuel and continue towards the front lines and also refuel there on their way back but spend little time in those exposed bases.

Iran with airplanes and helicopters and pilots who were trained in America and in front of the Iraqi Air Force with Russian fighter planes and pilots who were trained there. Do not forget that at the beginning After the war, Iran's army had disintegrated after the revolution and all the commanders of the air force had been fired or retired. Young pilots went to war with very young commanders and fought well. But in the middle of the war, due to sanctions, they could not even buy spare parts.
You can clearly see the professionalism of the military shah trained, and how low the new regime dragged then from that point on
Specially the point you made about the chosen people for the mission, there were many talented pilots and military personnel that got horrible treatment as the result of the regimes mistrust
That is your biased view only.
