had both, still got the 35. The 35 will do everything the 28 will do, better. just pick an inch behind the 35s sound hole, and you’ve got a 28 sound, but better. No need for a 28 if you’ve got a 35.
The D28 was more focused, had greater individual note clarity, and you could hear more of the wood in the tone. It really stood out in the mix. The D35 was more jangly and hi-fi sounding, sat back in the mix more, had a more metallic sound, and the mids seemed slightly scooped. It had greater sustain and "shimmer". Personally I find the D28 to be more versatile/classic but they're both great guitars you can't go wrong with.
Love this video because it's short, sweet and simple, quick A/B comparisons, strumming and picking. Boom. You can just replay this video a number of times and get a good idea of the differences.
Purchased a d35 back in 2018 based on a lot of things but this video helped pin point the differences in tone. The 35 has a lot more over tones which lends itself well to my style.
Buddy!!!! This is excellent!! You played the darned things for us to hear clearly. No discussion of aged Indian Rosewood (rather than Indonesian) / Herringbone Contours (rather than Nova Scotian Halibut) / Elephant Tusk Fretboard Inlays (rather than Ukrainian Boar's-Tusk.) Steel bracing materials manufactured in Shanghai, Pittsburgh or Sheffield. UK?. Nope. You played them and made them both sound clear and good. (And the 35 does project and have more volume / 28 quieter and for perhaps a singer to accompany himself / herself.) Thanks for this "no-nonsense." demo. 55 enjoyable seconds!
They both sound nice. Will be getting a D-35 because I admit I love the 3-piece back. It has a Sunburst finish since I haven't had one for a while. I already have a fantastic sounding Martin, a triple 0, 16e cut-away.
The D35 just sounds way louder and thus easier to play. I love the D28 but I hate when an acoustic is too focused and boxy sounding, kind of the opposite. Ideally a good acoustic is a boom box but with clarity.
I have a hd-28 and d-35. They are differences but good differences. It's mainly up to the individual taste. The action on both were set the same and are a pleasure to play. If you are a Gibson fan the j-45 is a great choice also. A good mahogany equal. You can't go wrong with anyone one of them.
D35 is a little louder with a tad deeper low end a slightly more highs. I hear the mids much better in the D28 with better note separation and articulation. I'd choose the D28 judging by this but would be happy with either obviously.
Martin D-28 or D-35? Can't decide between the two. Does the 3 piece back in the D-35 change the tone? Isn't it better to have a few pieces as possible in the guitar?
A guitar works as a system; and it would be impossible to compare a 3 peice back with a two peice back as there are too many other changing variables. 3 vs 2 surely has some effect on tone though.
In my opinion, D35 has more lows and more highs, which makes the spectrum like a U shape. while D28 is more balanced. In this review video, I personally like D28 more, even though D35 is also nice.

Right on, thanks!
Exactly +1

I love the history of the d-35. A masterclass in creative problem solving and marketing!
This is the best comparison video for these two guitars I've heard.
I like the d28 when you’re strumming and the d35 for the lick . Not sure which one to get .
I still want both.
Great demonstration! I have this Martin D28 (2017)
Great video. Wish it was longer. But very good! Thanks!

the Gibson j-45 is like the Gibson J-160E?
35 all day

35 by a mile
Yes.
I think the D-35 has the better/newer strings.
D28 ❤️ my dream
Sounds great thanks 🙏
one thing remains. CAN'T GO WRONG WITH A MARTIN idc if its made in usa or mexico, martin designed is still martin quality.

D35 = overtones galore D28 = focused
Add s big deep low end to the D-28 and you get the D-35.
D35 won it by a country mile and it ain’t even close 😊
28 (i owned a 35 in the past, too boomy for my taste)
D28
If buy.....recomended.....is D28.... or D35...???...
Whichever speaks to you more!
D35 newer strings, no doubt
D35 a mani basse!
D35 is a better guitar
That's just your opinion dude
😂
D28 sounded better to me
bullshit
by far

Stein Ein: I agree. I think some folks hear volume or a low end growl and fail to realize the mids are so underrated.
