Martin Balsam was a great character actor. In my opinion, his two greatest films were Psycho as a detective, and Bedford Incident as the doctor who Widmark's character made to feel like a loser. I first saw Psycho in 1960 at Jacksonville Beach, a Navy town. I was 11, with two teenage sisters and our mother. Naturally, the navy guys were attracted to my two teenage sisters. We were in a theater sitting in the same row with three or four Navy guys. When Martin turned the chair around showing the ragged stuffed body of the old lady, my 13-year-old sister screamed and at the same time grabbed the leg of the young sailor with her right hand sitting beside her. It was like a domino effect up and down the aisle as we all screamed! 😂

That little girl doesn't make it any easy for the viewers to wish for her survival!!

She is just a kid. The old biddy mother of the boy at the beginning was a real pain.

They did that to make us think, mostly subconsciously, that they might very well kill her off; if she was to be straight up lovely (😍) we wouldn't really believe (deep down) that she would *not* be saved in the nick of time.
      ehr ........ maybe 😊
      .

@@fukpoeslaw3613 Maybe, but at least we would *care* for her. I guess that would be the whole point of our nail bite. This could still very well be one of those sad ending stories, and we would spend the whole play wishing that it wasn't. But this way all we see is an intolerante kid who keeps lying and not even respecting her own life, and at times i just wanted her dead already LOL.

As I watched this show, which was broadcast live, several things stood out. 1. Unlike today's shows, there were a couple of times when the actors stumbled over their words. Nowadays, that would be a retake. However, if we think about it, that is the way people normally speak. No one speaks perfectly, often saying one word when they mean another. 2. The little girl must really be afraid of her parents scolding her. Once I was bitten by a dog; I knew about rabies and I ran screaming and hollering to mama.
    3. They were on a vacation, apparently in the country, but they never changed clothes. In fact they wore very nice clothes. Once again, the dramatic music kept me on the edge of my seat!😮

This is apparently Balsam's first tv/film role.
Don't you love the business suits they're wearing on vacation?

Our family was one of the first families to get a television in the little town of Quitman Georgia, population about 2500 in 1954. There was shows similar to this on TV. Notice the overly dramatic actors and dramatic organ music in the background. it's interesting that they're broadcast live and then recorded on film which we're seeing now you can tell they're in an early studio by the hollow sound

I got such a feeling of satisfaction when I heard the sounds of the gunshots when the cop played by Balsam kills that vicious dog. I can't help wishing it was so simple doing that these days. Imagine the paperwork now if that really happened. I guess it still could happen even these days.
I can hear the pounding of the children's feet on the pavement.

Definitely worth the watch. The only thing that caught my attention was that the girl who was bitten was outside playing WITH HER FRIENDS, yet no one could identify her or provide an address? And the mother went up and down the street "hollering like a lunatic" but never found her daughter and no one heard her? Yes, it was a LONG time ago, but, even then, kids that age did not wander out of earshot from home.

I believe they are using the single camera method. That was coming back then, due to the low production costs.
