My all-time favorite Alfred Hitchcock, no show of recent times comes even close to these shows in quality. They did such wonderful shows with such limited technology
The episode has a problem in the basic plot. A dog is old at 13 years. Kerry Blue dogs typically die 12-13. This man knew that Annie was old and that she was getting sickly as old beings usually do. The story the wife tells is utterly believable. It makes sense the dog would die at that age. The wife said the dog wasn't breathing and she couldn't feel a heartbeat. What reason was there to believe the dog was buried alive? None at all.
Wow. Men used to slap women like it was okay to do....and the women acted like it was nothing. Had he slapped me like that, I would have buried him with his dog.
Me too. Reception was pretty dubious way down on the southern border of Texas when the nearest tv stations were in San Antonio. I was a kid growing up in the 50s/early 60s and all the tv sets were B&W like the one this was recorded from; that was just as well because I imagine Hitchcock wasn't in color anyway.
No souffles either. And since auntie might not be hungry and tells the cook to 86 the souffle order, definitely don't eat any omelettes the next morning!
Jimmy... try wrapping thee antennas in tin foil for better reception and try standing in different places holding thee antennas. 🤭 (one thing I DON'T miss about the good ol' days) 🤔 Ohhh, you said computer... whazzat?
@@spongemonkeysooz, my house was "modernized" by an "aerial, better known as an antenna" on the roof! Better than the "rabbit ears". Small drawback is dad had to climb up to the roof to adjust the dang thang while somebody had to stand below to tell-yell if the image was getting better! The 50's and early 60's were great to grow up in! Everyone please stay well and safe! Pax
I found the plot rather odd, almost unbelievable. Dogs don't live past teen years (usually). 13 years old for a dog is in fact like 90 years old for a human. The dog had already been acting sickly. The man should have expected Annie to die soon. You don't have to be a veterinarian to realize there is no breathing or not heartbeat. It didn't make sense to just the dog's dead body in the house until the vet could "officially" say she was dead. There simply was no reason to believe Thelma buried the dog alive!
This man was so selfish, he did not deserve his patient wife. He was so cold and uncaring about her needs. No, he did not deserve Annie or his wife, I feel for all women that are emotionally and psychologically abused by these manipulative partners who just use them as if they were servants of a lower class. 🤧😤 He got what he deserved in the end, I am glad wife survived, poor sweetheart.

It may not be that unusual for people to be more attached to pets than partners. A woman wrote to Dear Abby saying her husband smoked all the time. She tried to get him to quit by pointing out that she could have her health damaged by 2nd hand smoke but it didn't affect him. Then she read an article saying it applied to dogs. He instantly threw his cigs in the trash! "If anything happened to Champ, I'd never forgive myself!" he exclaimed. He stopped smoking that day.
Oh NO! 😲 I would have to throw this husband out to go live with Annie. Or I would have to leave so I do not bury him with Annie. Husband is the real 🐕 DOG! Imagine the many psychos in that simpler time compared to NOW!
Was very happy to find this video (warts and all). Thank you for the upload. I think much of the 1950s/60s TV for general audiences was much more provocative and edgy and intelligent than what started to happen in the late 1970s, 80s and especially the 90s. "Prime Time" became so dumbed down, offensive and stupid as time went on. Not to mention the insufferable laugh tracks. Give me a Hitchcock or Twilight Zone episode any day, and I'm up for it.
I think the irony was supposed to be that by accidently killing himself he saved his wife's life. The neighbour who heard him fall would have called emergency services and they would have noticed that something was wrong with her as well. Perhaps they noticed the empty pill bottle in the kitchen and gave her an emetic such as charcoal.
I love my dog but some people treat their pooches like they are people. Like when they have birthday parties or buy them birthday cards. Yeah, because my dog knows he was born on January 17th and is a Capricorn. So is really a goat not a dog! lol

This episode has credibility problems. First, 13 IS very old for a dog. It is ELDERLY for a dog and death is generally expected about that time. Second, you don't have to be a doctor to realize that an animal is not breathing. There was no reason to believe the wife buried that animal alive. People do get very strongly attached to their pets. People love their pets dearly. But they know that their pets are not immortal.
The episode is plausible; the man was such a sick creepy character he'd fixate on an insane idea like that even if any normal person would know better.
It's showing an unbalanced man's reaction to the normal passing of an elderly pet. Everyone in this episode, including Annie, is normal except the crazy husband, and that's the whole plot.
Although the plot seems weird to me, the acting is superb, particularly that of Carmen Matthews. Every not she hits is perfect. It's believable when she is groggy and scared through her grogginess. Gene Evans is also credible in an increasingly unsympathetic role as the man whose grief for his dog drives him to utter madness.
Excellent Alfred Hitchcock short film. I absolutely do not agree with the husband physically assaulting his wife during his grief. I do think the wife handled the death situation of the dog poorly. She should have called him to share that the dog had died and have him make the necessary decisions that need to occur. It would have been ok for her to keep the deceased dog on their personal property in the back. Why is it necessary to bury the dog in the woods when you have your own land. The dog should have been taken to an emergency veterinarian or the regular veterinarian the next day. Because her husband absolutely loved the dog the wife should have called her husband immediately. He might have even flew back home earlier. The husband had a psychiatric break and his behavior was no longer rational. The wife seemed to be nice but sometimes a pet gives a person something that a human being can not give. I don't necessarily agree with replacing the deceased dog with a new dog even though the dog was the same breed. The husband would need time to grieve Annie, she can't be replaced.
I agree... The wife was kind, patient, I don't think it was a malicious act, but we didn't see lol But I think she wasn't thinking with much regard for her husband's feelings for the dog .... to just so instantly throw the dog out and buried... You're right ... She could have felt more for her husband's grief, and absolutely called the vet, and called her husband to prepare him, and let the dog wait for him... I can understand his anger at her actions... Whether she was truly just thinking she did the right thing, or she just didn't care But I get the feeling, that no matter WHAT action she took, her Narcissistic husband would never be satisfied... He would still be angry at her and abusive... Use her as a scapegoat for his pain... misery... She was inconsiderate, yes .. but no one deserves to be abused that way .... Her husband was a dirt bag narcissist, who only cared for her as a servant, .... I love dogs, and fuss over them, truly, like my child too, but there's no way, I would make my partner feel so insignificant, I can show love to both ... a narcissist cannot...
