Thanks for the tour! I'll know for next year. I was wondering about those other artists who received Grammys prior to the televised show, and also wondering how much spark was put into it. Turns out, quite alot! Wish I had your energy!! ❤
This is soooooooooo cool. Ty for giving us the inside scoop on things. So cool. You are an amazing human being. Stay safe and healthy. There’s so much going around. It’s going to be so fun to stream this and hear the music and feel like an insider. I’ve been a ‘pit musician’ in an entirely diff universe most of my life and this is just so amazingly cool. Prince, Robert Palmer, All Along the Watchtower…. Cannot thank you enough.
When I saw the first page of the sheets, I thought, I coud handle this, too. Not that complicated. But when you flip to the opening song: I'm outta here. Not my league. 🙂 So amazeing to show us, what is going on behind the scene.
Thank you for sharing a view of the charts. It is surprising, if I may (I have done tons of copying), that they would provide double-sided chart for this Kirk Franklyn medley, considering a player will have to turn a page, by himself, in what is probably the most involved section for the bass. It is so EASY to avoid. And yes, four pages can be closed in a second after the last chord... Oh well... If a photocopy machine is close by... :). Thank you once again for showing the world what a professional musician is and does !
YEESSS!!! I saw my buddy John Hinchey's name on one of those charts!!! You can be assured that it is in the correct octave and accurate! Thank you, Lee! I was a Nashville pro bassist for 30 years. Nothing like you! But, I made a living. Lol What you're doing is exactly what I did in Nashvegas. You are my hero! Joe Murphy

This is too funny! The Grammys is the "Mother" of the entire commercial music business - and they play Curtis Mayfield and Fela Kuti during the show! Next year Frank Zappa, MC5 and Sex Pistols... ;-)
"Jimmy Hendrix." Think I heard Mike Lindell in the background at 6:21. 😂 Some Skunk Funk - nice! Kirk Franklin part looks killer, as well. Thanks for this. Have a great show!
Lee, this was so much fun to see. I've had the opportunity to do a little bit of this kind of work, on a much smaller scale, but I could relate to it . . . in a very small way. Thanks for the great videos, Lee. I'll be watching Sunday.

If someone handed that book to me and said we got a week to get this together I would have to say I think Leland sklar left this in the restroom and keep on walking. And I been reading and playing for over fifty years
This is so fun getting to sift through sheet music with you! This was always one of my most favorite things to do. Sift through stacks of music and just try to play them all! There were two giant stores of sheet music in Denver that was stacks and stacks and shelves from the floor to the ceiling. I was so happy if I could be left in one for at least three hours. There would always be some songs I was scavenger hunting for years hoping to find, after just hearing a snippet. it was an intense craving. Sometimes the sheet music just couldn't be found, and I would try to get a recording of it if I could find that, and realized I would have to try and figure it all out. If it was from an old movie, I would try to take down all the information I could. I was so happy when I could rent a movie, to get it to the place where the song started and just have a field day with it. I can definitely understand why you like this thing with the Emmy Pre-show. It's as fun as Elitches used to be. 🎡🎢🎠 I think one of those stores was not that far from old Elitches Gardens. 😂💗
Does it mean you're old if you remember music stores and all the sheet music displays? Today you can just download off your phone (possibly in a selection of different keys), but it doesn't replace the kid in a candy shop experience of the places (mostly one large place, admittedly they weren't on every block) I remember from when I was a kid.
@@SoundsFair--M-and-J I think maybe I was born old, which is why I don't notice how old I actually am sometimes... :) Till I do the math. I'm always constantly amazed to still be alive, which has also been that way most of my life, at every age. 😂 Wow! I think, "hmm." Sure would like to go to the candy store right now! 😅
Thanks for showing us the charts. A diverse program. Some Skunk Funk is tricky to play even when you’ve memorised the part but sight reading it under immense pressure is next level!
Lee, thank you so much for sharing this! Us music geeks love it. Suggestion- Why not use iPads for delivery of the music? Easier to turn the page, so to speak. Unless there are changes in the order of the pieces of music.
Can you 'mark up' a chart on an iPad - on the fly? Pick up a pencil, you're done. You'd have to switch to edit mode, make the mark up, then save. Very inefficient. I doubt the musical director would like to wait for everyone to do so. iPads might be okay for 'complete' works, but not for a book like that one and not for a live show.
Wow! About 50% of that stuff is on my spotify playlist for my office hours, what a cool choice. So yes -I will attend the youtube pre show fir sure!!! ❤
I have a quick question for you Mr Sklar . Do you have a Jackie Gleason type of photographic memory or is it more of a Marilu Henner - highly autobiographical memory - capacity for recalling songs and music ? You seem to remember very quickly what's put in front of you on music sheets . Either way it's such a joy to watch you at work and play . Mr Gleason : given a 75 page script to learn ...45 minutes later he tosses it onto a table and says ...' got it .' Every single syllable ingrained into his memory bank . Jeez !Ms Henner remembers EVERYTHING from her youngest childhood until the present ...jeezo ! Talk about being gifted .....
As a musician myself I always appreciate clean, clearly notated charts-that said I don’t see them nearly enough on my gigs… I’m not a pit or studio musician so my gigs aren’t on the high level that your gigs are on. Quite an amazing song list there! The one that really caught my eye was Steely Dan's "Peg." That just might be my favorite Steely Dan track ever, and Chuck Rainey played bass on it. So often on '70s songs, if you weren't on bass, Chuck was. Kind of surreal to see you played a little bit of Chuck's lines in this montage.😎
Thanks! Does someone print out updates on a laser printer and distribute them? No tabs or Nashville Numbers in that book. 🙂 I'm gonna try some of that on my little 4 string bass. Looks like all the Classical Composers are showing up. Hope you get some good rest!
