You're going down a massive rabbit hole with GG. All members were incredibly talented multi-instrumentalists as well as being possible the most creative band of their era (to the detriment of their success). Live videos of the band demonstrate their versatility best .

Gentle Giant has gotta be one of the most consistent Prog-Bands, or just bands in general, that I've ever listened to, both in their general sound and in their quality, Octopus is a essential prog rock album. It's like a classical piece of music telling you a history, a history of one epic journey. This album is so inventive and really pushes the boundaries of music. Octopus is a special album because it really represents the spirit of Gentle Giant and the Progressive Rock scene in its purest form: it incorporates not only the various approaches and elements that other bands were trying out and exploring upon them in truly unique fashion, but also predicting future ones from the mid 70's. Insane technical progressive rock wizardry from some of the early innovators. Gentle Giant took to the streets with the most unique and varied approach, which included countless experiments beyond traditional rock sounds. Every sounds is following a mathematical pattern. Very much about the composition of both notes and singing. They progressed the bounds further than any others.(aside from perhaps some parts of King Crimson) While both Gentle Giant and King Crimson are pioneers of progressive rock, Gentle Giant brings a unique, upbeat twist to the genre giving a more uplifting and intricate musical experience, contrasting with King Crimson's darker tones. The album is a testament to the band's versatility, blending elements of rock, jazz, and classical music seamlessly. Overall, Gentle Giant is a masterpiece of progressive rock. The context is what makes this album even more interesting to me: Gentle Giant really came out of nowhere and extremely early on in the Progressive Rock scene and, where most other bands were still developing, they were already thinking ahead and including more influences than most others at this time. Another great thing about the record is its versatility. There’s medieval-inspired prog like Raconteur Troubadour, heavier stuff like A Cry for Everyone, the more operatic Knots, and even a ballad like Think of Me With Kindness. And the thing is that they succeed in every style, as with the exception of Dog's Life, all of the tracks are great. The instrumentation used throughout the record is also very varied. The adventure of Panurge is a monstruous classic. The song is about a man, Panurge, who is approached by a stranger and asked about his identity and origin. Panurge is in need of help because he is thirsty and tired. The stranger offers to help and brings him home, where they become close friends and make a vow to always be there for each other. Panurge reveals that he has come from Hell and introduces his friend to someone named Pantagruel. The song emphasizes the theme of friendship and loyalty.

I found them late. In 1980. I was 16. I heard Inside Out on 96 Rock in Atlanta really late at night and called in to ask who that was. It took me YEARS to collect all their stuff and discover it all in almost reverse chronological order. They're only the greatest prog rock band in history to me. Still listen to them ALL THE TIME. This is so fun.

You need to hear a couple of songs more to understand that you love them and need to hear everything. They were active for only 10 years, actually the 70s. There are, to my knowledge not to many live videos preserved, but well a few. Unfortunately I never saw them live. Wish I did.
