The song they play directly after this in the concert is even more insane: it's called On Reflection and begins with the band acting as a chamber orchestra. Gentle Giant is amazing, amazing music.
Congratulations! You have joined the VERY few people who have reacted to GG. I have been listening to them since the mid 70s and what I like about them is the constant changes during their songs. At the time I had not heard anything like what they were doing. Never knowing what direction a song would take and how it would get there. If you react to any more, I suggest In a Glass House. Excellent reaction.👍
while it is great to see so many new discoverers starting a love affair Gentle Giant on youtube, very few have the ability to describe what they are hearing with any literary sophistication or depth of insight. you’re the first who brings an analysis worthy of the greatness of Giant’s music, thank you. Your point about Ray and Kerry influencing each other as composers is true and crucial to understanding the joy of what was going on. Kerry picked up on Ray’s sense of funk and rhythm (especially accenting the anticipation) in his untouchable clavinet work. Then Kerry’s sense of dissonance appears in Ray’s guitar duet with Gary. And back and forth they went, each raising the harmonic and rhythmic bar for each other. The way the compositions grew from album to album in this way was the most thrilling part of Gentle Giant for me, a fan since 1974 and a pro keyboard player because after seeing them in 1975 I decided that’s what I must do. Again, thanks for this, it’s excellent
Great reaction, brave one! Not many dive into the deep waters of Gentle Giant Freehand with this kind of abandon. ❤ But you have just discovered what a great live band they were.😊
For another examples of 'instrument swapping' in a live performance, to add to the above cited On Reflection, there's also on youtube a 1975 version of The Advent of Paniurge at the Long Beach Arena, where the band for a while becomes sort of a wind section. And I Lost My Head, from 1976's album Interview, which followed Free Hand. Both terrific.
If I remember right, they had changed their record label back then - that´s what the title "Free hand" really was about. Musically, so to speak. Although their my favorite band almost since I´d first heard them one has to admit, their music is somewhat unusual and that may disturb some people. It´s definitely not easy-listening. All songs differ much from another and it´s hard to suggest just one of their many great tunes. The "swapping" one in this live performance is "On Reflection" - or "Funny Ways" with a superb vibraphone solo.
The studio version of this song doesn't have the "solo" sections but instead it has a long written part in the middle that they couldn't play live. BTW I also recommend you hear the studio version of On Reflection because it's very different to the live version.
