Points Diversity is a real thing! I'm a huge believer in it and I think it really helps to unlock specific ecosystems & travel redemptions. Love the more casual-style video too! Totally makes sense with using Chase as your "Hotel Points" with Hyatt & American Express as your "Flight Points, lots of good international airlines there like you said. Great video as always Spencer!
I totally agree! There is so much more to be said about point diversity but I wanted this one to be more off the cuff so I inevitably left stuff out but I hope my point still came across well! Thanks for watching as always man!
out of every credit card youtuber and trust me I have watched all of them, you broke down the credit cards in the most concise and informative way and was very understandable, keep it up!
Great topic Spencer! I've stuck with 2-3 main banks for a while now since having multiple point systems is tough if your spend is not that high. Couple that with airline/hotel point earning cards, and it becomes much harder to get that aspirational redemption if the spending becomes too divided. Luckily, we have strategies like the one you mentioned about pooling all those points to a single transfer partner, which definitely helps! Good luck with the move!
Thank you Stan! Of course, everyone’s preferences will be slightly different, but I wanted to show people that you don’t necessarily need to only ever stick to one lender if you’re the type of person that wants to play this game as profitably as possible. Thanks for commenting as always man!
The conversational style video is a nice addition to your regular, more straight-forward informational videos! Having multiple options for cash back, travel, welcome bonuses, and business is essential in my book as multiple options give me more power to decide. Great video as always and that boy Odin is KNOCKED! He’s dreaming of targeted offers 😂 - Ivan
Great video Spencer as always! I see my credit card setup kind of how I see my retirement accounts: I like to be diversified so if one specific thing takes a real turn for the worse, there’s always something to fall back on. Also, I love the dedication to film while moving 💯
The power of the transfer partners is why I have a lot of cards too and want to add more I have some just for the account but Amex blue business plus and delta blue I hit the bonus on the delta card for 10k I have 17k miles and 16k membership with Amex I can transfer those to delta and add more value after that the delta won’t really be used
I feel like when you're introduced to credit card points/benefits, you're either like "oh that's neat" or you instantly want to learn everything there is to know and plan your credit card strategy. I went from applying for the Discover It because I got an offer for it in the mail, to wondering if I made a good choice and getting caught in the credit card rabbit hole.. I already know the order I'm going to apply for my next like 6-7 cards 🤣
Point diversity is big to me as I have dipped my toes into the points and miles game. You are right Spencer....the overlaps of transfer partners between the banks can really yield some crazy good redemptions and therefore some amazing experiences!! Great video!!
I’m glad this topic resonated with you! I think diversifying your points is a super powerful strategy to implement if you’re the type of person who wants to profit in any way you can from the credit card game. Thanks for watching as always!
Such a great video! Point diversity is so important especially if you travel a lot or plan to. It gives you options that you just don’t get with one or two lenders. Thanks as always for sharing.
My setup right now is the Amex Gold and the Venture X and Im really happy with this dual-lender setup because they both share Aeroplan, British Airways, and Virgin transfer partners which I value the most. Looking to travel abroad more in the future so this helps with my strategy.
I recently got a CLI with Discover and my Apple Card. Bringing my overall available credit limit increased by $3400. What I do with all my credit cards is that I have it all on a note pad with every spending task for each card.
Recently I’ve gotten into the Chase Ecosystem purely because Costco only accepts Visa Card. Otherwise I would have just stuck with Citi only. Plus I found out that the Sapphire Preferred offers primary car rental insurance so that’ll pay for itself when I start taking yearly vacations if and when I ever find friends to go with. If not then I can always just cash out the points and buy alcohol and weed with it and pretend like I’m on vacation with friends. I can set up paper cut outs of friends and talk and laugh with them and just have a jolly good time. Maybe I’ll get lucky and get to sleep with one of the cardboard cutouts but realistically I’ll still get rejected even by an inanimate object and be ashamed of myself for wanting to sleep with a piece of cardboard outside of marriage.
I was actually just thinking about this recently, trying to have an optimized travel system. You hit all the points (pun not intended) I have been thinking about in terms of my ideal setup as I have been moving away from thinking about trifectas to transferrable currency. Solid video!
I currently have 8 personal cards and 4 business cards from 4 different lenders..Chase, Discover, Amex, Wells Fargo (Bilt). Citi is probably my next lender but in a few months planning to start my journey with Navy Fed too. But going to try really hard to wait awhile to get under 5/24 and get another Ink card hopefully with an elevated offer that corresponds with the timing. Till some other elevated offer tempts me and tempts me to chase a sign up bonus lol
Totally agree with the logic. Right now I’m just with Chase and Amex but since I’m at 4/24. Waiting for a good chase card. If SW has a companion pass soon, I’ll probably jump on it and then get a load of other cards there after.
The big thing for me with C1 points is the transfer to Air Canada. Not too hard to get around 2 cents per point for United domestic flights. Might be useful if you’re close to Houston Intercontinental
I agree with you and we almost have the same setups. I would like add more about applying more credit card strategically and how to space out with with different lenders, such as start with Chase 5/24 move towards Cap1 because their lending method then move into Amex in final stage etc. Overall great insight from your video, keep it up!
I'm keeping things simple. My Cap 1 Quicksilver was my starter. I'm enjoying my Amazon Prime Visa right now. It's used a lot. I am going after the CFU later this year, then CSP early next year. I'm not a big spender, nor do I travel much (yet). Maintenance costs of homeownership will fuel my ability to earn the points to vacation.
For us credit card enthusiasts, having a diversity in points is definitely a good thing for individuals on team travel, team cash back, or a combination of both! I am earning cash back with my Capital One, Discover, and U.S. Bank cards. With my Chase and Citi cards, I am earning UR points and ThankYou points, respectively, which I am currently holding on to for potential future use on travel. I also have two hotel cards which are earning hotel points with Hilton and IHG. I agree, that for the casual credit card user on team travel, having cards with one ecosystem is probably the best thing. However, for those on team cash back, having cards from multiple issuers is not a bad thing for both casual card users and those of us who want to have a lot of cards. You’re definitely right about Amex being weird lately! I have heard of so many people who are in Amex pop-up jail and I found out that I am in it too when I tried to apply for the Hilton Surpass card earlier this week. I have also seen where some people are in pop-up jail for certain Amex cards and not other ones.
I’m glad we agree here! You’re 100% right in my opinion… team cash back and folks heavily on team travel can get a lot of use with cards from multiple lenders, but if you’re more casually on team travel, sticking to one or two ecosystems is likely best. That dang popup jail is coming for everyone man. They’re definitely being annoying with that! I’m sorry to hear you’re trapped in it too. Thank you for watching as always man!!
This is the way. Just finished an international trip to the UK with Airfrance miles, and multiple Hyatt stays. Couldn’t have been done without CSP, Venture X, and Gold. Nothing feels better than a free vacation! I am on West Coast and ended up flying out of Austin because it was so cheap!
I think rather than using chase as your “hotel” card, its better to just stop staying at hyatt and instead apply either the hilton aspire or marriott brilliant. No point staying at hotel if don’t have status imho
I am in the this boat and I "want to get welcome bonuses from any lender that will give me the the highest welcome bonus at the time." Here's my question: How does one determine the highest welcome bonus at any particular time time? With so many welcome offer options in various currencies all with subjective valuations that are dependent on individual redemption styles and goals, it's not that easy to know which offer is highest for any particular individual. Points Guy, Frequent Miler, Travel Nerds and others do estimate point values in a broad sense, but these valuations can prove woefully off depending on ones redemptions. In my opinion, the value of points diversity is in providing optionality for redemptions allowing one to further optimize ones redemptions to obtain higher value redemptions on average.
Really good video, definitely some awkward camera angles. For AMEX, What are your favorite transfer partners (other than southwest)? I never seem to be able to get a good redemption with the amex points I have.
I think you should just cash out your excess points and make use of the money. Cash is the ultimate point currency. Don't let your points sit for too long.
The capital one venture x is possibily your most catch all used daily card. Why not get the Savor One card as well to combo with the Ven X as you can exchange/move all the points together. I bet the AMEX gold is the card thats stopping you from getting it but you'll save so much $$ with Savor One haha.
You should make a video talking about how having too many credit and therefore, hard inquiries, affect (or not) your chances of getting approved for a car loan or more importantly, a mortgage loan.
Just my 2 cents.. You've said you want to go to Greece and Italy.. Turkish is a great redemtion especially if you can find a round trip.. (it can be open jaw!) As you can go to Italy, Greece and have a stopover in Istanbul for 90k points. (Only when booking RT) or you can do what I did and booked 1 way on Turkish and one way with Aeroplan. Turkish flies out of Dallas and Houston so you definitely have options! Good luck!
This is what I've been needing! It'd be awesome to go to get a trip setup to Greece or Italy soon. And since Turkish is a partner with Cap1, I could likely at least book two one-way tickets there. However, I'd probably need to use my Amex points or something else for the second leg and could do that with Aeroplan it seems, which would work out really well. This is all great to know David. Thanks so much!
Diversity is good, especially if anything catastrophic happens and all your cards with one lender get shut down. I know I personally always want a cash out strategy.
From just a practical standpoint, I think people need cards from at least two different lenders just in case of system outages or overly aggressive fraud protection. There have been two times in my life when I have traveled internationally that this has come up. Years ago, AMEX put a fraud block on my card in Canada that I couldn't immediately get resolved. Then once in Mexico, my Barclays card kept getting "no response from bank" anywhere I tried to use it. So, no one should ever rely on cards from just one lender.
Yup. I told my daughter she needs : at least 2 cards from 2 different lenders that are on 2 different networks. Plus 1 debit card with free atm access in case of emergency.
I think if someone’s churning credit cards and constantly adding and downgrading and everything in between, it’s almost inevitable they’re going to be increasing the card systems they have to keep track of. It’s almost just a mental hurdle to just accept if credit card acquisition is a consistent thing in someone’s life for the sign up bonuses and rewards. Looks like you have a great system in place and I may be adding Citi here soon into mine with that Custom Cash.😂👏
What are your thoughts on the Wells Autograph? 3% on all travel, dining, streaming, plus gas; which not a bunch have. With pure cash back, is there still a lot more value in something like the sapphire? If you aren’t using their travel portal and booking directly with the travel partner.
Unless you plan to use their transfer partners or redeem via their travel portal or build a chase trifecta, there is no advantage of the CSP over the WF autograph.

I'd suggest sticking to 1-2 systems at a time. That way you can concentrate your spend into specific redemptions. You can rotate system, but it's more efficient to focus on just one, maybe two if you are transitioning systems. Overlapping partners aren't as valuable as some of the exclusive ones.
