I didn't have an experience of becoming ill in high school because I became ill as an eight year old, but I can relate to this a bit. When I entered high school I assumed that everyone would somehow magically know that I was nice and kind and interesting; I didn't take into account how my illness was affecting the way I interacted. In reality, I never smiled because I couldn't spare the energy, I moved slowly, and I only spoke if I absolutely needed to. I came across as sad and weird. It took me a couple of years to gain the communication skills and confidence to show the world who I really was and find friends who saw past the illness. I had my fair share of suffering in high school, but it's also where I learnt to be confident in who I am and stand up for myself. Now I'm 22 and what I have kept from my school experience is my confidence and 3 precious friends.

I got ill at uni and was very ill between the age of 20 and 25 and totally agree about suddenly being older than your years! Your perspective on everything changes and your priorities too. A few years on I am now a student nurse and feel I'll be much better for all my experiences up to this stage. Really interesting video :)

Ellie W Hope you are doing well. I think you have commented before? I remember you saying you were a student nurse! How are things going? I bet they are crazy between sleep, uni and placements! I'm sure you will be a very empathetic nurse due to your experiences Xx 😘

Hannah, I always love your videos - this one was awesome. I enjoyed hearing about this book and how you related it to your life. I wasn't unwell in high school, but both of my younger brothers have Crohn's Disease, and it was heartwrenching and inspirational to see how their lives have changed as they struggle with medication and surgery - and how that affected their teenage relationships. Entering the giveaway by tweeting you.

In Germany we don't really have separate high school but anyways you could probably say I am in Highschool as I am in 12th grade... I progressively got sicker and during the first year or so my friends have changed out basically. I have lost a lot of friends who were not supportive at all, even saying I just wanted attention, but I also have new friends now that truly take me as I am and try to support me whenever they can. I definitely have fewer friends right now, but I am so glad I have them. Amd yes I love school. I am so grateful for every day I can be there. To me, going to school means doing a thing normal people do and that's still very important to me. I actually don't have any friends I can talk to about books because most of them like fantasy or movies and I am more into realistic books...

I'm so glad you enjoyed 'Hospital High'! Mimi's such a wonderfully empathetic writer and I love how she weaves humour into even the hardest of situations. It's next on my to-read list and I'm very looking forward to it. :)

I loved secondary school! I had a small circle of friends who I'm still best friend with now even though we all go to different colleges! I never hung out with other people who liked books though in school- there just wasn't many or else they were all hiding and I never came across them 🙈
I didn't know you have a twitter! Going to follow now 😊

I don't want to say I know how you feel, because I don't have chronic illness, but I am interested in this book as I have anxiety and have not been going to school regularly since 7th grade. As a result of this I have lost a lot of friends. It's definitely hard to navigate social situations when you're outside of the norm, but like you said, I am who I am and I will make friends who truly accept ME. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

Annie's Book Nook You put that so well. You have to love yourself first and care about other people's opinions second. I'm so sorry that you experienced all of that. A shrunken friendship group is hard to deal with, sending hugs! Xx
