Hi, I have the exact same experience mate your not alone at all. I think we also share quite a few of our subscribers. I try and remember that if you were to take 100k random people you would have quite a few people that just enjoy causing pain to others. its just the big numbers concentrate them and it can be hard on your mental health. You know everyone is watching and quite a few people watching will be wanting you to fail and waiting so they can say something negative. Fortunately most of my comments and from what i see yours that is only like 1% or less but it still gets to you. Its easier said than done to ignore them without just not reading any comments. I read comments and try and still interact so just ignoring the bad ones isnt as easy as people think.

    • @maximusironthumper
      @maximusironthumper  4 года назад +5

Yes, I agree it's not easy to ignore the bad ones, I'll never be able to head my head around the idea of someone watching a video waiting and wanting for that person to fail, but yep they are out there. I also agree we both have overwhelmingly positive feedback in the comments section - especially compared to some of the other channels I watch!

Back around 1980 I went to “ the difficult to find Vines Cross festival”. Lovely vibe, local music , time bandits projected on to a sheet tied to the trees, some mushroom tea and a bit of blow and my girl friend at the time,, The Enid playing. Quite a spectacle, got a Robert Calvert album( lucky Lief and The longships). An amazing little gathering. The next year was good but a bit bigger but the third year a load of patch wearing bikers turned up ( I was on a 650 triumph but was a greasy hippy)it was all too big the vibe had utterly gone and the the few spoiled it.
Sounds like your channel, you’re making stuff for the nice people who are interested, don’t know and want to learn or have sort of been there done something similar and enjoy a brew and watching Max tear a landrover apart, as a break from tearing my own landrover apart!but while you’re doing for the likes of me, you’re conscious of the sneering negative arsholes who inhabit the bottom half of the internet ( to steal Dave gormans line) sharpening their knives ready to post unpleasant uncalled for comments.

When I saw that cabin coming apart I did wonder if there was going to be enough left to save, but you did an outstanding refurb. You're one of the very few content makers that hasn't made it all about the money. Most channels reach a trigger point where the stats and targeting numbers become more important than the feel of the channel. Your content still feels genuine and interesting. You're a very likable chap, so I'm sure Patreon can work for you too. Hi Max, I started joining along with your projects three years ago when I first start my university degree. I no doubt stumbled across the channel whilst looking for good land rover videos! Your attitude towards projects and the problems that come along with them resonated with me enormously and helped me a lot with my mental health. Leaving behind my home... and more importantly my shed... To attend university was an unwelcome change in surroundings and your videos have acted as somewhat of an escape for me when the times were tough and I missed my countryside life. To speak honestly, the inspiration you have exuded regarding off grid living has played a role in my career choices and aspirations (confirming my belief that i must somehow end up adjacent to a field). I am now embarking on a 4 year PhD in Biophysics and I'm sure I will need the guided meditation that is your videos now more than ever. So I will be very happy to give something back!
    Thanks for everything, Patrick.

It is the nature of the beast. If you put yourself into the public domain, then you invite criticism. There will always be those who find a channel by accident, who are not really interested in this type of content, or there those who like to criticize. To me the whole debate over funding content on RUclips is a massive debate. I have subscribed to a lt of channels. I could not afford to even pay one pound a month to everyone, even if I would like to. I do support several creators. The owner of RUclips makes a lot of money off of it. The debate ought to be between creators and them, in getting a bigger slice of the pie. After al I already pay for internet access. The idea of RUclips used to be, like other social media, to connect with other like-minded people. I don't think that the creators envisioned that it would be , or could be , a way for hundreds of thousands to make a living.

Since I don't own it, but are allowed (or expected, given the little bit of rent that I'm paying) to maintain and improve it, I think I'm in a similar position as you are, namely having to make sure that I don't spend a fortune on that and still make it a comfortable homestead. I also try to preserve as much of the building's originality as I can. Max; ignore the you tube trolls. Your slightly halting delivery is genuine and your aims and objectives appear really sound. You inspire a great many more people than you may imagine. I'm one. I'm currently helping a young fella and his Mum deal with planning issues that may prevent him setting up his hybrid smallholding venture. I frequently visit your channel to inspire me so that, I can bolster my enthusiasm to help him...….. you will have another patreon when my business has weathered the 'lock-down' storm...…. if it ever does!

Max, just do the stuff YOU like, not what others like. It's your Channel, your life. The reason we look at your video's is because we like the way you are / the way YOU make video's, so just stay on your own path. We love you, just the way you are. :)

Hi, I admire your frankness and find it shite that folk like yourself putting out great content should have small minded idiots making childish and knobbish comments whilst sitting on their backsides acting like keyboard warriors. Glad to hear you are carrying on with the channel and I hope to be able to support you going forward.

Max finding your channel really gave me a reward. Just knowing there is someone like you out there doing what you do gives me faith in humanity. It also makes me feel less of an outsider. Your channel alone gives me more enjoyment than, say, my TV license. All my like minded friends also love what you do. Keep it up, I am sure there are enough of us to help to support you.

Good on you for avoiding the sponsorship route, Max - but please keep doing your videos, we love any of your content, your humour and enthusiasm put you a level above the norm. There are always trolls / thumbs-downers and the lockdown seems to have brought them out in force, but please ignore their negativity and don't let it get you down! You are loved by a lot of people as a model of alternative living and creative thinking. Carry on!

Signed up. I've been watching Project Awesome and the Landrover rebuilds, and thoroughly enjoyed the cabin refurb. Ignore the trolls, they are just jealous of what you do and of what you are capable of. I am involved with a very different restoration, but the small percentage of negative comments are just the same.

Just signed up to the patreon! I would've happily paid 2 or 3 pounds a month, you should have some more options between 1 and 10 pounds as I'm sure some people will want to give more than 1 but might not be able stretch to 10. Just my 2p! Content is great, fair play dude.

Many of us cannot afford the patreon videos and look forward to your videos which make us smile and click the thumbs up!

Please don't let the ............. get you down. Your lifestyle is the only possible future for all of us. Reuse, recycle, live sustainably and regeneratively. Make more films, make more stuff, keep going, have faith in yourself. I will look at your shop which I did not know about, I will watch all the ads, I will do Patreon as soon as I can. Gardening, off grid living, engineering projects, building, all good. Thanks for bringing like minded folks together in your comments sections. Turn the naysayers off. They have no future, sadly.

One of the downsides to patreon is those of us who are on low incomes, which leaves us shut out of a lot of things that patrons are opened to, personally I have no paid subscriptions for anything (RUclips, television, news outlets, etc.) as I can't justify them over bills, food and my own projects to keep me sane, which is a shame as there are some great people out there who deserve to be paid for the content they create on here including yourself, but the adrev system is just too unstable for it to be a viable income... :(

    • @LiLBitsDK

yeah not easy to justify it when you are on a tight budget, even though you would like to. same issue here
