You have changed your body shape to a much more healthy one and you look much better! I was carrying probably 2 stone around my middle and had gone from borderline diabetic into full blown type 2 though i am 72. I lost 3 st over about 5 months by cutting out all refined carbs, and the diabetes went into remission without any treatment. Well done sir! My diabetes nurse told me I needed to get back to what i weighed in my mid 20’s extra weight around the middle is a diabetes marker !
Ditto, now 9st 7lb diabetes under control, 80 last July, onwards and upwards, One has to not respond to advertising of carbs, sugar, in all it's guises processed food, have an iron will for a few weeks then it's easy to control, fasting, two meals a day 3 eggs for breakfast, steak n raw veg for tea/supper, all food intake during 6 hours, no snacks, the rest of the time fasting and digestion, good sleep and of course exercise
I loathe exercise, but as a soldier of forty years I seem to have done quite a lot. I think this is great, a realistic synopsis of how it is to train for a goal with the ups and downs along the way and how you are over coming them, and delivered with aplomb. Well done! I'm 64 myself and have started going to the gym twice a week now (I do HIIT sessions). I dont always look forward to going but after the session I'm always glad that I went and I'm definitely a lot stronger/fitter
Well done Max- I'm no Dan but I'm 62 and I've always worked out; the mental battle has always been the more difficult element to maintain. The hardest part of training is getting your kit on. I believe your goal is still well within reach now that you have got better consistency. Keep going mate- 'use it or lose it !'

Remember who you are Maximus Iron-Pumper. You can do this, get back on track, but don't injure yourself. I'm going through my own personal fitness targets, but I'm almost 70 so you have a distinct advantage. I expect to see a lot of progress in the next 6 months. Be strong like BULL. 😉👍
I'm glad to see the update! I've been looking forward to it! Your issues with continuing to push the intensity are exactly why most of weight training should be with the primary aim of building muscle, and of course coordination and form. Long-term strength progress is a result of muscle mass. There's only so much you can eek out of a given amount of muscle. Good that you've got a man who really knows what it's like on-board. I'm pretty decently muscled, but I would not expect to be able to do a 95 kg push press without gaining quite a lot more muscle. Maybe in like 2 years. That said, you're a tall guy with a steady base and a lot of determination. I'm about 5'8, so my bodyweight at a given bodyfat percentage is naturally lower, if we were to be equally well-developed. So stay humble and know that there is yet so much that you do not know, but don't give up the pursuit!
Keep going fella, strenght will improve so many areas of you life, its not just about how heavy you can lift....purpose, longevity, self esteem and theeee most important taking the jam jar lid off for you girlfriend......thats the most important thing in the universe ;)
Excellent update Max. I was only wondering the other other day if you'd persevered with your callange. Well done you for sticking with it. (Its very common for someone taking on a challenge like this to overdo it the first few months...and then "plateau"). Adjusting your program as you have, is always the way forward.
I have been weightlifting for a long time, i am no strongman. But I found whole body workouts over a few days more grueling ,than doing a standard bodybuilding split over 4/5 days instead. Also I have found going to a physical gym very helpful. Not just the extra equipment available, but found it oddly motivating(maybe its all the super fit people there). It was also a nice change of scenery over a home gym.
best advice i ever got in relation to the ohp is to use your lats like a shelf. jim wendler told me this, & i'd highly suggest you have a look at his ohp vids. you already know how important bracing, & being locked in is. nothing made me feel more locked in w/ the ohp & bp than flexing the hell out of my lats. great progress, bud.
When i trained at a Gym many years ago there was a regular member there who competed in "natural" weight lifting competitions (Bench Press, Squat & Deadlift). He went on to become the European Champion in his weight class and later the World Champion. Im fairly sure that his strategy when training was to train at 80% of his maximum lifting weight and strive firstly for more reps and then when he reached the satisfactory rep range to increase the weight very slightly. Because training at maximum weight too often will only give short term gains and will likely lead to an injury.

Seems like a solid schedule. Even if you maybe not is on schedule to lift your weight over head in the next six months, you could very well be on your way to eventually be able to do so. And I agree that your form in the pushpress improved by a lot in that second clip. Looks really good there imo.

I find landmine exercises help with my training. Especially as im getting older and have a number of old injuries. Didn't take me long to make my own equipment either with some scaffolding tube and 25mm bar. Could be a new project for you making your own stuff.
I don't remember what I commented back on the original video, but it was probably my moaning about my spine being useless, it still is, though in the past week has finally become more useful feeling again, just in time to have completely missed almost a year of all kinds of household tasks, indoors and out, oh joy... :P
In the beginning your improvements come from improved ability to recruit muscle fibres as your neurological system becomes accustomed to what's being asked of it - improvements in form also contributes a lot early on. These gains come quite quickly - but once you've maximised what your existing muscle mass is able to do, it's mostly about building more muscle which is a much slower process.
Its good to see the positive mental aspect. I believe I was a bit negative when you started, but on that point, I've been proved right. You were never going to achieve your main goal. You've accepted that quite positively, which is good, but some would take this very badly, especially if they were training with a mate, or a group, and while you are going to carryon, others would simply give up, and be in a worse place mentally than before they started. I remember when you started running. It worked for you, but as I said at the time, around 50% of people have negative effects from running. I remember listening to BBC Radio 4 Today, and that burk Robinson asked a top consultant from my hospital St Thomas's, and he said, 'if I run, or exercise, will I live longer'? The consultant said: "No"! Of course any decent presstitute would have a follow up question, but a slimy nasty bit of work that Robinson is, said nothing, but he is in record saying 'I hate poor people'. There's a very good reason why top sports people retire in their late 20s and 30s, and that's because they or their coach notices a decline. Sometimes it's eyesight, such as cricket. BTW, I used to have a resting heart rate of 38bpm. I can live with my physical decline. Sure, take T, or HGH, but there are serious risks. Now you know why they have full length mirrors in gyms. Dude there's a book you might like (called bigger leaner stronger) to help you with this it's essentially gym myths busted by frat boys in university to get there degree (I found a used copy on eBay for like £4) and I think it'd be a good reference piece to help you better yourself
If you want to build strength & muscle simply do 100 burpees every day. Then add 1 press-up per day after the burpees. If you use the Seinfeld method - never miss a day - then you will make noticeable progress. In 100 days you will being doing 100 burpees + 100 press-ups. NB you will have to eat more protein as you go. The easiest way to allow that is to cut out bread and bread-like products to enable more calories to be invested in protein. Creatine & protein powder will help.
