Sony Xperia 1 VI IS HERE! A Lot Good, Some Bad...

- The new Sony Xperia 1 VI is here and there are a lot of big improvements for the phone like upgraded camera, better battery, better cooling and heat management, better quality screen and better brightness, and new speakers, but sadly the 21:9 aspect ratio is gone and so is the 4K screen, and now it's only 1080p.

Well one good thing about the 1vi, it makes the 1v look even better 😬
Literally thinking the same other than zoom it's all downgraded
I don't think so. The downgrades are not an issue, the upgrades make it better phone.
I deciced to not buy a Mk V, because of the stupidly tall thin screen alone. Mk VI seems to be better and I may think about it. I don't care about the pixel density, I care about the battery life and overall usability.
Ok then get it, lots of us preferred the long aspect, perfect for multitasking and one hand use
@@112Tribalyou cooking with the other one? lol, jk, I get it tho.
@@bravobear1844 Well that is one use case sure, maybe not what I had in mind, but I could see it 😂
Pretty much everything has been upgraded as one would expect with a new model (newest SOC, optimized speakers, battery etc.). HOWEVER, the screen has been downgraded to make it more mainstream which I wouldnt have had a problem with IF they lowered the price accordingly. This phone currently costs €1400 !! in the Netherlands 😅😅
1080p in 2024... I love my Mark 5. But this feels like a step backwards. I need at least an AMOLED on my flagship. I hope Sony prices the phone accordingly as we are no longer paying for the 4k premium screen and the unique aspect ratio.
Still same price £1299
Exact same price 🤦🏻♂️
Yes yes you need oled. Definitely:)))
AMOLED is just another name for OLED lol
I mean, there are other things that go into the phone that aren't exactly free besides the screen but lol.
Them camera sensors that they JUST made and release (first in the Mark V) most certainly aren't null.
Actual zoom lenses, and multiples on top of that, inflate the price of other phones in the singulars.
So glad I got the 1 V a few days ago... I saw the screen and aspect ratio was changing for the worse on the 1 VI... Was a no brainer to get the V instead.
Well everything for the 6 was enhanced so it makes sense to sacrifice display resolution
@@xicorescalante2854 the reason why I got the 1 V was because of the 5 V screen not being as good as the 5 IV's.... I was a 5 guy.. definitely won't be a 1 VI guy... Let's hope they fix the 5 VI screen... No sacrifices should ever be made. If they want to do low resolution screens keep that sort of thing on the 5 and keep cost down... Always go big on the 1
@@bobbywilson7101 beggars cant be choosers also sacrifices must be done regardless. And the 1 is supposed to be an everyday phone so it makes sense. As for the 5 it's the economy version for those with a budget so it makes sense. The pro on the other hand I expect no sacrifices that's why it's a masterpiece. Look at iPhone it's a piece of 💩, same as the previous model and ppl still buy it
Pre-order now! Delivery from 10.06.24 here in Norway 🙂
Lol love it
I think no one complains about the screen if they drop the price. The no price drop can harm it.
The upgraded headphone DAC is what I want to know more about. This always bugged me about the Xperia line. The DAC was always average. This is the Walkman company. It's a flagship phone and they went out of their way to include a headphone jack. Not having a premium DAC just boggled my mind. I'm hoping this is what "upgraded" means.
Even just properly "utilizing and tweaking" the Qualcomm DAC should have been a no-brainer.
Samsung is a good but od example here. Back when they had the headphone jack, some of the phones would sound godly, or close enough where a little EQ took it to the next level.
Sony has no excuse not to dig into that at the least.
@@MaddJakd I remember those old Samsungs.
@avenuePad I had the S7 Edge, S8 and S10+. The S8 was the ugly one when it came to sound, but the S7 sounded nice and S10+ was amazing.
Yes me too. They could justify the price tag if the dac chip in 1vi is the same as their dap lines
The biggest disappointment imo is the resolution change. Maybe many people can't notice the difference but I can. QHD should be the minimum, especially in high end phones.
Dude, u cant see. Or are u the only human with androzoid eyes?
Even LG G3 had QHD. Super sharp. Modern batteries should handle it
@@salisalsero219You can easily tell the difference when it comes to reading text. Quad hd is far sharper vs 1080p
@@salisalsero219 gotcha
@@paultasker7788 So you mean Sony's new phone is equivalent to a 10 year old phone's screen That doesn't sound so good. And you could buy the LG phones really cheap about 6 months after they came out, best buy for the money.
I like how they advertised a 4k 120fps recording on a phone that no longer can properly play 4k 120fps content lmao
So you don´t have a modern television that can show 4K?
@@PeterEk31 ??? Bruh most people on this planet don't
It is 120fps slow motion which is Higher than other phones currently recording video at 4k as I understand
What about recording 4k contents but you can't see them on the phone!!!
What about you don't have any device with 4k resolution but you keep recording 4k video😂
Personally i always thought 4k on a 6 or 7 inch display was a waste of battery and processong power . But they definitely should have went 1440p if they're charging as much as or more than an iPhone max and s24 ultra
This thing is doa already in the states ...typical sony pricing themselves out of the equation.
did they announce US pricing?
yeah not sure whats up with these bipolar decision, can't they find mid spot? either have needless ultra high quality 4k screen or have a youtube ancient 1080 HD quality screen
3 years of updates is the minimum but I still think it's too expensive for just 3 😢😂
Should have been at least 4
@@Danilio. Exactly, a55 has 4 years of updates and is half the price
Xiaomi has cheaper phones and much better, screen is just god tier, hardware the same, and everything is better for less, and 5 years of updates, as they increased it this year, so no excuses for Sony, they releasing their phones with god tier price, trash support, and with already outdated chipset as in few months we will have new snapdragon

Thanks for the update. My Xperia 1 V is solid as a rock. I'm looking forwad to having a look at VI when its available for demo. Thanks again.
Nice! I didn't even know Sony is still making phones.
If you are not tech nerd, then sony phones are good...i stiil have sony xz1 2017...no problems at all...good music sound in ear phones, cameras are normal, awesome usage stability, no lag, enpugh good battery life...no regrets
Thanks for all the spec details.
I am not ready to change from the 1 mark V as there are several steps downwards. I use two physical SIMs outside the US where eSIM is still rare. The screen changes are cost savings it seems.
Some more info to Europe buyers only get a 256gb model currenctly japan and asia get the option of 512gb. Brightness went from 900 nits to 1300 nits. 30w charging 0-50 percent in 30 mins. Colors black Platinum silver and khaki green.
And a stunning red colour
Sat here watching dune in 4k on my mk v, mmm not sure if this is really an upgrade...
i watched it in IMAX. watching this movie on such a small displays is hilarious!!
yeah, 1080p and 12GB ram, such a flagship
For 1400$ too
I own the Xperia IV and I've had a Sony phone since the Z1. I've never complained about their update decisions and design choices. However, I have some major issues with the VI.
I love the 21:9 ratio, in my hands it fits comfortably and watching movies on it is a dream. The move away from 21:9 is a disappointment but it's something I can live with.
The move from 4k to 1080p however is absolutely disgraceful. For a phone that costs £1299 and is a flagship for 2024, I expect at least a QHD display to be in line with what Samsung and Apple offer.
I have no idea what Sony were thinking. If Sony doesn't put a QHD display on the VII then I will have to consider going with another brand. A real shame.
I don't see a need for a 6-inch display to be more than FHD+ tbh. For years I thought maybe there's an actual difference until I saw with my own eyes that a 4k display literally gives no more details than a FHD+ display.
iphone 15 pro and pro max just have Full HD+ display, man, unlike QHD in S24 Ultra
that's not really the entire truth, and not comparable. The iPhone 15 pro max has a resolution of 2796 x 1290p on 16:9 ratio while the Sony has 2340 x 1080p on 19.5:9 ratio. While the iPhone isn't quiet at QHD 1440p, its only 150p shy of being a QHD display while the Sony is 340p shy of being a QHD display. Thats a pretty significant difference and the iPhone should be noticeably sharper with a much greater PPI index.
While Sony has made some questionable decisions here for the Xperia 1 VI such as not having a 4K screen change, lack of notification LED, dimension ratio change etc....
I think perhaps Sony could be saving these legacy features for a Pro model later in the year. Because the Xperia 1 VI is not giving me that true flagship vibe so far unlike it's predecessors when launched.
Why do tech enthusiast assume there's a better tech product being made if the current product isn't to their liking?🤷♂️
Let us pray 🙏🏽
@@jevonsims900I was about to ask where the "Pro" idea came from lol.
@@jevonsims900 Haha well I am not so much of a tech enthusiast but my observation is based on what Sony has done. Both Xperia Pro and Pro-I came out later in the year which were better than the 'flagships' launched earlier in the same year (X1 II and X1 III).
Because if this is not the case, as Tech Odyssey mentioned in the video, some changes to the Xperia 1 VI is making me scratch my head... Its not really progressive improvements from it's predecessors.
@@XzaroX Based on what they have done in the past with the Xperia Pro and Pro-I which were better than the 'flagships' that were launched in those respective years (X1 II and X1 III).
notification led in Sony Miro was glorious to watch.
I've had my experia 1iii for a good few years and loved it. I'm all about the 3.5mm Headphone Jack so quite excited to see talk of improved Headphone Output Quality...
When you are able to get the 6, looking forward to your honest review. I'm especially interested in your opinion on the new zoom. Bummer no purple again.
I liked what I saw. Screen resolution is not an issue for me. I'll miss the slimmer case, but that's also not a deal breaker for me.
Wow I haven't been this excited for a phone in a while looks like I might have to add this to my arsenal All the things I wanted changed or upgraded they did
is the unified camera app exclusive to the new model?
Would the notification led make its way back?
Upgraded headphone jack tells me nothing. How much per can it push? Can it finally properly drive a mobile headphone like the MSR7 that doesn't even require that much power? My 1V can only drive my cheap KZ in ear monitors.
Any thoughts on bands support in the US on TM or Google FI?
Downgraded the display from 4K to 1080p but still increase the price.
As far as I know, there are no 4k smartphones screens, there are only a maximum of QHD+, such as the Samsung S Ultra line.
@@Emanuel_Martins Sony have produced phones with a 4K display since the Z5 Premium in 2015.

And now, when Sony finally include the LTPO OLED display from 1 to 120Hz, they say bye bye to 4K. Mah 🤷🏻♂️?🤦🏻♂️
Glad I got the 1 V still
I'm not sure if the fhd screen really matters, i have a dell precision laptop with a 15inch touch screen 4k display, if i bump it up to 4k the text is so small i cant read it on a 15inch screen so i have to lower the resolution and increase the display scaling up over 100% especially if i want to use the touch features. The key concerns for me are, battery life, sd card slot, headphone jack(not a deal breaker but nice on long haul flights over 6-7hrs as wireless nc buds dont hold up well in that environment), if Samsung put an sd card slot back on their flagship id probably go back to them, the SD slot is a deal breaker must have for me.
Don't serve me raw chicken and call it sushi! We can all see what's going on here!
no, please explain

Hmmm I like others are a bit shocked regarding the screen resolution .. I've just got the 1 v and I was going to return it and wait for the 1 vi but not now ... Will this screen be prone to the green line issue??
1299 euros is ridiculous, that means if they even sell it in the united states they will probably make it 1299 dollars too, when i heard the rumors of the fhd screen i thought they would bring it down to 999 dollars, an extra 300 dollars is ridiculous, i don't even mind full hd and prefer the greater screen width, but the price is just plain disrespectful for what you are getting
There’s no way they would drop the price 300 dollars over that change lol. 50 bucks max, if they were going to at all.
The price is €1399 in Europe. It ships from June 3rd on pre-order.
I agree it is steep. Hopefully it comes down a bit later this year.
I heard 4k cannot do variable refrest rate. That's why they choose 1080p. It looks like they want to achieve battery last longer rather than sharpness.
I also think they want to make the price same as last year. If this phone is 4K with all of this stuff, I think it's gonna be more expensive.
I wonder if 21:9 4K is gonna only available for Pro version later.
I am fine with fhd plus screen though i think they are doing good now as long as the quality is great its just enough
No camera sensor upgrade? My s10+ from 5 years ago that I'm trying to upgrade from has a 12MP camera. And so does this new Sony phone for 2 of its cameras.
As bad as I want to buy this phone. I can't because I strongly feel after all the negative feedback about the 4k being gone. The 4k will be back next year on the Xperia 1 mark 7.
To the Mark 7 🥁
This is why this world gets crazy and crazy everyday. The 4k screen was called “unnecessary” and a “battery” killer. “Give us a 1080 screen and better battery”. The level of mediocrity on RUclips is frightening
Bro I think this phone is just perfect sure there is no qhd but let me tell you 4k is completely useless in a smart phone so don't be stupid we should buy this phone to support Sony and give feedback that make it qhd in the next model

I can't buy the ones on offer..
I think the pricing definitely should come down with no 4k display. It sucks they still won't offer trade-in value on their own devices. The combined camera app sounds good. I truly hope the point and shoot is better for users that don't want to use the pro/manual features. It sucks that they still aren't putting anything in the box not even the USB - C cable. The cable gets wear and tear easily, plus other Asian company OEMs just offer more with their top devices ie: cases, screen protectors, troll stickers, charger, etc. That simply brings value to the already high price point. Glad they kept the headphone jack and expandable memory. That's the features I appreciate the most. I use wired headphones and keep a lot of audio content due to hobby. I also hope the creator app is improved as well because the audio recording feature was pretty good for creating on spot musical content. I wish they would showcase that feature as well as the camera.
There is still a creator mode?

I can't believe how many people are complaining about the lack of 4K screen. I bet most of those people couldn't tell the difference side by side...also seems like they don't realize most things displayed on the 1V were still in just FHD. I remember how everyone complained about 4K being a battery drain and should be a way to turn it off....now SONY actually listened also added LTPO and people complain about lack of 4K....Geez no satisfying some people. I feel like they took mkhd suggestions into the design as he suggested a slightly smaller phone, a 1080p display and better auto camera
I can understand with people not want a 1080p display but for me i dont mind as i had a Huawei P30 pro and the battery on that was fantastic as i tend to get between over a day and a half that especially when im out during motorsport events ..but this is my opinion so i know alot of people wont agree with me

Sadly it's not
Screen i dont really care about as with my S22 ultra i use 1080p to save battery any way but it being colour tuned is really good. but i understand why the mark V had bad battery the 4k would just kill the battery
So is the 3 year software update support only with the Xperia 1 VI?
I got the Xperia 1 V 🤔
I think there is still one year update remaining!
Was waiting for 1 VI specs to be officially released. Now that it loses 21:9 aspect ratio as well as 4k, I'll upgrade to the 1 V when it inevitably goes on sale.
I'm happy with every change they've made, fhd ltpo display means better battery, new changes to software makes it easier to use and simpler but i am very upset about the aspect ratio change, the skinny phone was so much nicer to use ergonomically and i loved watching movies on it.
Sony was the first one to implement 4k into their phones many years ago. Now they say the phone will be 200$ cheaper, but give us 1080p lol. Not 1440p, which I would have been ok. I'll pay the extra 200 for a better screen display lol.
A little hack, if you take photos on the VI but transfer photo in the mark V to modify it and transfer to computer

I don't like new camera app, but I'll get used to it. Other than new camera app all is better for me.
FHD+ is what I use on the S24 Ultra, no drama ..... But 12mp sensor still in the telephoto, that kills it for me :-(
Everyone talking about resolution going down from 4k.it is not noticeable at all due to the actual device. Would be noticeable and I would agree if it was a TV.

Sony has stalled! Why can't they bring good quality 2K 960 fps in a two-second slommo burst with end trigger and motion detection recording? 4K 120 is cool but they need to innovate more. We've had that for a couple years. Bring on 2K 960 fps two second burst or 4K 240 fps.

I am so glad Sony made those changes...anyway, I will buy it used in about a year for 30% of the current MSRP...
3 years is a start but for as expensive as these phones are… I don’t know why they’re slow rolling on getting with the times but better than Red Magic and ROG, I might look into the Xperia line up for the first time.
What was the reason of dropping 4k screen resolution..you had the best display in whole industry..
As soon I found out the Xperia VI was announced I came straight to Ody's channel. 😎
PetaPixel is reporting that it won't be released in the US. I believe it too. Sony always mentions availability, even if delayed in other regions. This time around there was 0 mention of the US. Damn shame! I was ready to pre-order too.
Me too, refreshing the page from morning to pre order. But couldn’t find anything regarding 1 VI in US.
I need @techOdyssey sir to please contact Sony and confirm about it 🥹
2:08 Isn't that the same as the color spectrum that Xperias and LG phones used to have in the past? Guess they lacked features to announce and decided to just throw it in.
Very disappointed when i saw FHD+ which is basically FHD with the extra pixels in length due to the ratio aspect. I expected a QHD display, and i think that would have been adequate. While i appreciate all the software improvements, except for the better increased zoom of the Telephoto, nothing has changed on a hardware level for the cameras. I expected them to at least put the Exmor T sensor in the Telephoto, as it can very much benefit from those 48Mp and better light sensitivity. I hope they replace it with a QHD screen next year and improve the sensors in the cameras as well. Tho still impressed, im going to sit this one out.
Peak brightness for 1 vi is 1200 nits

Even though I like the photos, vivo also has a partnership with Zeiss and I think the photos are much better.
Definitely. Vivo 100 Ultra is amazing. Mauch better cameras and better screen.
A phone's display does not need to be more than FHD+ imo. Especially a phone that's meant to be used turned on constantly (taking photos/videos for a longer time).
Although the screen is downgraded...i am okay with that. I always kept mine in 1080p because thr 4k wasnt that special to me and i preferred a better battery life. Also appreciate the new LTPO screen and brighter screen.
Although slightly disappointed with the same main camera, except for the telephoto which is a big improvement and promising....and better DAC.
Ultimately I did get rid of the 1V was due to some Bluetooth issues....that i just couldn't bypass...
Overall probably should have been a little cheaper...
Dont really care as much about the drop in Resolution... The aspect ratio change is a big nono though... Gonna skip this one...
