For this easy DIY staircase makeover, I show how to install maple hardwood stair treads, and how I make my own stair risers out of plywood. The star of the show is the LED under-tread lighting that is motion activated. For the LED stair lights, I installed motion sensors at the top and bottom of the staircase. I then routed channels under the nose of each stair tread, where I installed COB led strips, which are wired to and LED stair controller installed under the stairs. This is an easy DIY project that anyone can do, and makes a dramatic difference in the appearance of your stairs.

Just boguht some!
Where’s the link for the led light kit ?
Why did you cut the back bit off AFTER finishing the treads? Wouldn't it make more sense to first cut and then finish so the cut edge is also sealed?
3:00 Over 3 years. How time flies.
Well I was going to buy from ali but I guess the premium from a middleman might be worth it.
I subscribed 3 yrs ago when you bought this building and boy I have thoroughly enjoyed this journey. Not only was this educational and entertaining but more importantly it was motivating and inspiring to do what makes you happy unapologetically and let nothing stop you. Love you man keep going we here for the next chapter. From this veteran I salute you sir.
ITS BEEN 3 YEARS??
@ugr-icicle6332 yea he started everything in 2020
I started watching around the same time. Can’t believe it’s been three years.
@@dustinmackbee5213 I know right
same. around covid time. thanks for the 3 years
I'm so happy for you. Honestly idk how you did it that first year when you didn't really live anywhere but lived everywhere. Like it's nice to see your home is set and is everything you wanted
I remember in one of the first videos of this makeover, you said, "Maybe you are lucky and will be binging the entire series". Well, I was not lucky back then and have been waiting for each episode. Now that the reveal is near, maybe it is time to rewatch and binge the series!
I can't believe I have been following you for three years. Wow. I really appreciate your workmanship.
It's so bittersweet. I found the channel during the pandemic and it's been a blast watching you transform this building. Truly a joy to watch. But I'm also excited to see what starts coming out of your workshop. Bravo
I've been binging your videos the past few days (well nights - late nights actually) and am frustrated (totally not your fault) because the final video hasnt been released. But then I think of all the viewers who have watched since day one, four years ago. We happened to buy our current house about 4 years ago and had to move during shutdown, and then had our master-bath refinished plus the basement finished when lumber goods were sky-high, so went with metal framing, too.
I'm glad we are past those days and can enjoy our new home and I hope you are enjoying yours. Thank you for the entertainment and inspiration for future projects - and my dream home!
I gotta say, your attitude about diving into things and learning them without hesitation is great. This whole reno has been a lot of fun, and we've used your videos to learn how to do some of our own projects. I've been watching you for years with my sons, and you set the right maker mindset as an example for them. We await the final reveal with baited breath.
I’m glad and sorry to see this series end. Thanks for sharing this with us and see you at the reveal!
Thanks for your videos from Russia!
The outro with the lights turning off was slick
thanks, glad someone noticed that :)
Dude i'm proud of you ❤️
That wiring is giving me the chills with how messy it is 😅 Amazing transformation. To think you carried so many (extremely!) heavy items up those old stairs for three years... Can't wait to see the final result of the building!
One of the few channels I ding that bell for. I love this entire build!
thank you!
I'd suggest you to update stair lights to DIY solution: ws2812b addressable led strip + esp32 board running WLED software. It has plugin for stairs. Even though it is way more complicated and not just plug and play - it gives truly endless possibilities in customization, scenarios, effects and integration into smart home@@modustrial
I'm hyped for that final walkthrough video, but also excited for the shop reno!
Can't wait to see the FINAL WALK THRU!! It's been a long haul but well worth it for those of us following you..BRAVO!!!
MIKE WHERE IS THE LIGHT ON THE TOP STEP
(also -- followed you since inception, my absolute favorite channel on RUclips. inspired by your work ethic and creativity, proud of you for coming so far!!! enjoy your new space :)
that light strip on the top step is a bit off, lol
i hope he can adjust it to be like the others
Glad to see it's finally come full circle. To quote another Mike, 'What a radical adventure!'
That was awesome!! Can’t wait for the final renovation video.
One hell of a way to end 2023. Can't wait for what 2024 has in store for us. Great work, as always. Can't believe that it has already been three years.
Thanks! Happy new year!
I have been watching the entire series related to this building. Started in ‘20 while I was recovering from a massive shoulder operation.
Gotta say, jobs are well done. You’ve really poured your heart n soul into this project. It’s been a fun adventure watching.
You should buy another building and do this again; flip it and keep going.
But just a suggestion.
Ohh those tears really where showing when he said last renovation video, it gave me goosebumps
Increíble como pasa el tiempo. Casi 4 años empece a ver los videos, en plena pandemia. Me alegra que por fin hayas terminado! Saludos
Im catching up with all of your videos. Its crazy to think thats its all over. Its been a crazy journey watching these renovation videos the last few years.
AWSOME staircase I can’t wait for next video
Well, house is done = time to move, Mike! What on earth are you going to do with all your time now the house is finished!
Tagged along for the whole process, and I am so happy for you that you are in the position you are in, to be able to do this and make this abandoned building into this absolutely awesome home! Well done, Mike!
Merry Christmas to you and all your viewers!
Hopefully he will be able to get back into designing and constructing awesome furniture!
holy hell this came out gorgeous
Caulk and paint makes me the decorator I ain't... :D
I remember how I felt when we finished the remodel in our home. Working evenings and weekends for ten months took a real toll on us. When we finally realized that we could move in, it was like Christmas and birthdays all rolled into one. It was such a relief to be done with all the planning and decisions. It’s time to enjoy all your hard work!
Followed this channel for a long while ever since you started the remodel of this abandon building
You’ve made incredible progress and can’t wait to see what you got next on your adventure on this channel 🎉
thank you!
can’t wait for the final reveal :))
I'm going to miss those old steps but I'm so excited to dance up the new ones, looks great!
Thanks Stu!
Very spiff.
One note for those of us with "normal" homes: Make sure you have your tools in the basement with you, as you aren't going to want to try to get up the stairs, to the garage, after you rip all the old treads out.
Can't wait for the big reveal.
I can't believe it's been three years! I found your channel right when you bought the building. I enjoy your other content, but I'll miss the renovations.
Mann I’m proud of you. From the first concert sink to and bathroom remodel to now you’ve done it!!!
I wanna see you get back to your cement projects, and build giant cement pots for you balcony!
I'm excited for the final tour! Been living vicariously through you since the beginning, maybe someday I'll have a full reno of my own. For now it's just remodeling my 1970s suburban house room by room which is fun too.
Congratulations on finishing. Must feel good to have the place done after 3 years. Now it's about doing smaller projects around the place that just make it nicer to live in but are not necessary for a home.
The property taxes in that block just went up exponentially! Your place is awesome!
I love the premise of this and the fact that you've made a very lucrative career out of building yourself a dream house!
We are hoping for the finale soon
This new stairway is magical. So much Wow Factor! You have a great talent and ability to visualize what you want and then make it a reality. And you’re an excellent teacher, as well. I’ve been here since you bought the building. I have been amazed at the beauty you have created from an abandoned tire place and I’m excited for the tour!🌸
Thanks Deborah!
Honestly, demo is the most fun part to watch. Yay for demo day!
Its crazy to think of all the time that has passed since the beginning of this series. I remember my first video of yours I saw and of this build in March of 2020. I’m in a such a different place now and its crazy to think of all the change thats happened while this was going on! It was a constant in my life. I’ll miss it but i’m so excited to see the end result and to see you continue to add your own flair and touch to the building with each new project
Really enjoyed the stair project. It looks so cool!
I started following when you first bought this place. It's been an amazing journey and it's awesome to see the pride you take in it
thanks Jim!
I've been watching this since the beginning.. I'm so hyped to see it finally coming to an end. Living out a dream through you! lol
just started watching the abandoned building videos and binged them all! i’m caught up right on time for the “finish” 🥳🥳🥳
That's a cool custom touch... Nice work! Can't wait for the full reveal video!
Congratulations ! you should be proud, enjoy your home, i know it's a lot more of a home when you do it yourself rather than buy it done.
Even though I've been here since the Rockler plywood challenge pixel resin pour bench it's still kind of weird finally seeing this renovation coming to an end. I remember in one of the first renovation vids when you were postulating that the whole thing should take about a year, maybe a year & a half tops. Oh how naive we all were pre-Pandemic. LOL. It's gotta be cathartic finally being ACTUALLY DONE with this whole crazy ride. Can't wait to see you get back to nifty concrete projects, guitars, and fun lamps and wood projects.
What an incredible and entertaining journey! I didn't missed one video of the renovation and I'll be here for the big reveal! 👏👏👏
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You and Yours!
I’m amazed at your journey so far. I can’t wait to see what projects you drawn up in this place!
Fantastic work, dude! The stairs look amazing!!! 😃
Really well done!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
And happy holidays!
I think you should make a cool creative concrete handrail. I know those videos don't do well in views for you but I think its cool.
The lights? Amaze balls……I’m led obsessed. I use them everywhere.
I’m so excited to for the final reveal! Congratulations on completing everything up to this point! 🎉
Amazing work all those years. Keep up!. One pro tip when installing LED Strips, its better to install them on a alumunum profile for better heat dissipation and longer LED lifespan. For COB leds like the ones you use there you don't need a profile with cover. Just an aluminum backplate. Greetings from Greece.
Looking good bro!
You should see the state of the stairs in my rental...council said bit of sanding...bit of paint will fix it...nope..also not done anything myself as my stairs are curved and a bit of a headache. Love what you did . Looks fab
The pressure sensitive acrylic adhesives (PSA) typically used on LED strips lose bond strength with excessive heat or cold. Plus you have a difference in linear expansion / contraction due to heat and humidity between the wood stair tread and the polyimide (DuPont Kapton) used for the LED substrate and copper conductors. The PSA's work best on high surface energy materials like glass & metals and less on lower surface energy materials like plastics. The super glue may have warded off some future maintenance. Great project!
🎄Merry Christmas 💖
Can’t wait for the final reveal ( tour) of all of this awesome work!
Sure do enjoy your content!
This looks great! Can't wait for the finished tour.
Hi MM, wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy New Year.❤️🇨🇦
sooo sick! thanks for sharing man I'll be doing this on my ugly old stair renovation!
go for it!
Congrats on the place and the work you've built into your channel! One of my fav parts of this build is video 1 planning on finishing this in 4 months xD
thank you!
Omg, did he really say that? I don't remember 😂
oh no the landing didn't get a light-- it's been a fun journey to watch. And forget the Ariat gear (that'd be awesome too) Santa bring me the routing table!!! I've been so good this year hahaha
I just said to myself “ oh modustrial maker I wonder he’s up?” and I open RUclips to see your video front and center I love it here! It’s been a great journey even before the abandon building buy 😢❤
led strips need that alumium channel to get rid of the heat and last longer
Cannot believe its been 3 years!
I’ve watched this remodel last longer than my relationship & I’m happy it’s lasting longer than my relationship
Congratulations. It's been fun watching your journey.
Loved the whole journey!!! Sad it’s coming to an end but I am looking forward to all the furniture and art pieces you will be creating!
Very nice.
Because I am older and the stairs in my house are shallow and steep, I might of replaced the stringers. Fun video! Thanks!
Congrats! been great watching it all come together. Looks beautiful.
Great job on the stairs.
They look amazing.
looks dope
Sad for this series to end
Are you going to sand the bricks to clean them up? Or if u want.. cover the grout lines, then paint the bricks red? Or brown.. then cover the bricks and paint the grout lines white..
3:52 Sort of skipped this section because you didn’t do new stringers, but for those that are doing that, laminate a 2x4 to the outside face of your outer stringers and when it comes time to sheet the gyprock and do the skirtings, you can just slot it down the side of the stringer and rest on the 2x4 instead of having to notch out at the end when you’ve put your treads and risers in.
Man, I love this channel!
Looking great! Can't wait to see the full tour now been years. :)
great work! love the stairs - extra goovy!
What happend to the old industrial elevator?
covered up with floor (to pass inspection), but still there....so maybe... :)
Yes! Please do a video on making the elevator work again.
This is a whole other level of design, build quality and production quality - Incredible work Drew! 👏 Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎄
OK, OK, OK - So you're going to buy another abandoned building, right? haha, really ensured this series over the last few years :)
Nice!
I'd suggest you to update stair lights to DIY solution: ws2812b addressable led strip + esp32 board running WLED software. It has plugin for stairs. Even though it is way more complicated and not just plug and play - it gives truly endless possibilities in customization, scenarios, effects and integration into smart home
I’ve been gone for a really long time
Ya randomly showed up in my recommended again
Definitely will keep an eye out for the final reveal
I love your thorough instructions...your enthusiasm...your style...even sharing your faux pas...
"Happy Holidays from Las Vegas...🌵🧤🧣☃️
Thanks! Happy holidays to you as well!
Excellent work always 📣💞
QUESTION: Do you plan on doing anything with the brick wall on the right side of the stairs? The bricks looks pretty beat up and that large patch of purple is pretty hideous - a stain on an otherwise gorgeous entryway.
And I am so looking forward to the final reveal. I discovered your channel right when you started the renovation and the difference in that place is amazing!
sorry if I missed it but will the final tread get LEDs too?
Super cool staircase!
Hi Mike…amazing work. The link for the leds/motion sensor is not correct. It is for food plan. Will you post the correct link please? Thanks
I felt that cameraman! Ouch ouch! Good work though, kept going in spite of.
