I was actually at the mississippi nights gig! It was just like he said! He neglected to mention that the OVER 21 section was almost empty! As a jaded musician, it was a strange night for me, never having heard Nirvana before. I left the concert saying "that was the best concert I've ever seen, and Nirvana is my favorite band!" heavy stuff!
This was one of the best shows I've ever been to and I started with Kansas at Kiel Auditorium back in 78 or 79. Dave Grohl is one of the best front men of all time.
i was there - at the original concert he's talking about. the club had a real low ceiling with big beams running across it, and people were jumping off the stage and hanging from these beams. it was crazy.
I was at that show and everyone did go apeshit. People stormed the stage, but it was like 3 songs in! I remember Kurt saying on stage “ Guns n Roses had a riot here, let’s have one too!” As well as making remarks about the always shitty security there. So we mini-rioted then the band and some fans help them set back up their equipment and they finished the set.
It wasn't 3 songs in, because they stopped playing at least 4 times... and one of them because the bouncer stepped on his Rat pedal and broke it and Kurt said the fatass bouncers broke his pedal so now we have to stop! And tried to start the riot... but it didn’t work... and finally he said I think we have another one... and Kris went into whine mode at least 4 times and Kurt cut him off the last time and said FUCK IT! YOU ALL WANNA COME ON STAGE?! WELLL COOOME OOOON UUUP! AND by the time the words were out... he had this grin on his face as he and Kris held their guitars close and were pushed against the back wall... so... at least half through
My measley band was playing down the street at Kennedy's that night. We went to the Nirvana show for a few songs at the beginning, not really knowing a whole lot about them. They were unexpectedly awesome but we had to leave to play our gig in front of 10 people. Then we heard about the crazy mini riot later that evening. Wish I'd have stuck around, that would have been a more interesting experience.
That night at Mississippi nights, I was under the impression that Kurt was pissed at the kids who kept getting on stage and stepping on his stuff. I thought that's why he quit playing, and on his way out told everyone to get on the stage.

The bartender at the old main street jazz and blues in belleville opened the show for urge overkill and nirvana. It was at mississippi nights.
