I was really intrigued by this game based on what I read on BGG and the campaign site. I really like the clock turn mechanic, and really enjoy the art. That said, the cost is a little steep compared to Isofarian Guard which I backed this year as well. Based on reviews and content I would hazard to guess Isofarian Guard has more content. I am in camp "I got enough that still needs to be played". I am working through Massive Darkness 2, and just received Oathsworn 2nd edition, so maybe I'll catch this on the secondary market or as a trade later.
Good breakdown, good review, good summary! Like you said it comes down to what games are waiting to be played and does this deserve a place in the list. I was interested in this game and it does look solid (the special characters of Altair and Mediceo looked very cool!) but my backlog of campaign games I have now and coming in the future (Tanares Ultimate/Maladum/etc) is too extensive. Good video though for sure!
honestly, i'd TOTALLY back this game... at the KS price of $150... but at the Gamefound price of ~$325us?!? (AND that's without most of the expansions!) HELL NO! the ONLY saving grace this game has for it, is that it's "shipping now" and will be delivered in a month. allegedly. (the KS campaign ended 3 years ago... and it's over 2 years late at this point.) but it's way to expensive for just under $400 (after shipping). NopeNopeNope.
Thanks for sharing. A game doesn't have to be greatly innovative to me. I would much rather play a tried and true system with some clever aspects and mainly WITH a great story which lets me take different branches for a clever story. That makes a game fun for me and for me the fun factor reigns supreme. Hopefully it is a lot of fun. Also, as you said, the table presence and minis do help. With me, those aspects help a lot in the immersion factor. Nice player boards and awesome minis weren't required, but meant a lot to me when playing Oathsworn. Which will be the game I'll be comparing NAR to.
Appreciate the review! It looks fun and great, and is on sale ATM but I have too many other games that are on the way and that are getting played through!
Hey Alex - I'm glad you mentioned the price as the 'Last Chance' Gamfound pledge is around $200 more expensive than the Core from the KS and all you get extra are the big enemy add-ons but not the more substantial gameplay add-ons. Your (pre-Gamefound role) older 'To back or not' reviews likely would have given this an easy thumbs down on price. But I do agree it is well produced and the Orogolium mechanic is pretty neat (I encountered the same one in Sine Tempore).
Alex, I felt similarly about Sine Tempore from the same design house. It ended up taking while to start leveling up, but as you do, the missions get more difficult and it just ended up being really enjoyable. The missions were well varied too, hope Nova Aetas is similar that way. Managing 4 characters with all their upgrade items and such was difficult at times tho, and I have yet to try it beyond solo.
I backed the original version in 2016. I did NOT back this current version. It appears they learned quite a bit from the 2015/2016 version and really improved on the system. I was sad that LMS did not have an easier (cheaper) way for original backers to update their games. I spent $140 for core and Vesuvio's Forge expansion, and the original game play had a lot of holes when trying to solo. If you are able Alex, can you show some playthrough's so we can see more?
It’s been confirmed that this bundle on GF would cost €245 without VAT included. It’s being sold at €299 right now with VAT, even for non-VAT countries, and that doesn’t include the 2nd wave expansions that will cost around €150 and then another shipping charge later. No thanks!
Alex, I wonder in the campaign genre how much space there is to deliver unfamiliar mechanics. How much of our decision in buying a campaign game revolves around the game mechanics - random chance, deterministic results, push your luck, fail forward? After we find a game system that matches our tastes. How much of our decision revolves around theme, setting, art (mini's)? Is it the story and progression that is interesting about the game? Or is it only the mechanics of throwing dice vs drawing cards vs pulling chips out of a bag? If a game does it well, do you want to see them continue to use the system like Frosthaven did with Gloomhaven and just refine it.. Still familiar but the foundation is the same with minor tweaks over time. Or does it become dull because it is using the same foundation?
It's an interesting conversation for sure. I think when I look at Massive Darkness, Tanares, Isofarian, Gloomhaven, Oathsworn...they all feel like they did something "more" on top of a good clean system. I just don't feel that way with Nova Aetas....make no mistake, I enjoy it and think it's great (so far) but I'm not getting the sense of anything done differently outside of the turn order mechanism.
Thanks for the video! I think its a lots inspired from the video game Final Fantasy Tactics (Height concepts, Subclass system, the clock, kind of missions such as escort mission, etc.) which is my favourite game of all time. Pretty sure i can't go wrong with this game. Curious about 3d buildings, how do you store them once they built ?
There's not enough space in the box to store them built. You will have to unmount them and store the single pieces in the box. However, they are not so many and are easy to mount.
HELP? i backed this 3 years ago kinda forgot about it not gonna lie saw that it was getting shipped to me this month BUT on the email it says core box? I pledge for the titan bundle which is core + hyperion + stretch goals so am i missing somthing or are they sending those at a later date?
Is it you just hate the company or you don't want to wait for the game? I'm not sure if you are aware, the current campaign is not to produce new copies. The current campaign on Gamefound is to sell already manufactured units that they have extras of after the campaign and are already getting ready for the fulfillment stage...
Yeah but Awakens Realms are late too and other KS are late.. lets talk about Primal Awakening which is starting to be really late too. I think the problem is more the fact that they haven't been transparent enough. In their KS they basically said everything was almost ready when it wasn't at all in the end. They also start many KS at the same time.. which pretty sure affect the overall time it take to develop a single of their game. But they did seem to have put a lots of effort in this one... so i am not sure how to think about it. I am on the fence really. The only reason i would get this is because it have a lots of things in common to Final Fantasy Tactics which is one of my favorite game of all time. But yeah the price tag and their behavior and lack of communication hold me back a bit. Maybe they just pissed off of the negativity in the end.
@briant2438 when Nova Aetas: Renaissance was first advertised by LMS, they said that everything was complete and they just needed funds to send it to the printers... that was three years ago. You can still see this written on the campaign page. LMS misled backers in the extreme. That's why I personally have a problem with them. That said, I'm so excited to finally get it!
Sine Tempore should have been fun, but it was mostly just a hot mess. It was just sloppy, half-baked and full of typos and poorly-explained instructions. Does this game seem, like, properly conceived and finished? That's my only worry with this, because it does look great. My copy should arrive any time now...
Thanks for your first impressions. I backed it on KS and regret my decision. Between your review and Ludus Magnus screwing me on my DEI pledge I'm going to sell this game as soon as it hits my doorstep. I will never ever back another Ludus Magnus game. They suck.
Ive backed several of their games and they never charged me VAT, and I live in the Us. Your ether wrong about what your saying or have some issues with your address that makes them think your in a VAT country.
@@JoeHuddleston Oh that whats you mean. Personally I am for that because if they don't do it European consumers need to pay 80% of the product cost. When they do it, yes everyone pays, but because more are paying, it only adds 10$-20$ to the cost of the product. I want to point out European Countries always had to cover for US Sales tax without knowing. @@CheddahSlammer which is what I'm doing with LMS from now on. EU consumers shouldn't have to pay our taxes, and we shouldn't have to pay theirs. Spreading it out over all the non-VAT consumers is not the answer.

Thanks for the video Alex, do you have a timeframe when you expect to have your review out? Or will you even be doing a full review on this?
Did you keep playing this game? Any future video coming for it? On the fence on buying it second hand
What's the language like in the rule and story books like Alex? LMS didn't do a great job proofing the original Black Rose Wars.
Thank you very much for your insights.
